Spring boot is not loading bootstrap.properties file - spring-boot

I noticed that when I create a spring-cloud application it is only getting properties from the application.properties file (or application.yml), so I have created the following demo project to simplify the situation, however, I still couldn't manage to load properties from a bootstrap.propertiles file.
I tried converting the bootstrap.properties file into bootstrap.yml with the same result.
I tried compiling and running the microservice as standalone with the same result.
I left this project on GitHub to demonstrate the situation: https://github.com/bcfernandez/Mobile-app-ws.git
The only entry point available is http://localhost:port/users/status
application.properties file is empty.
bootstrap.properties file sets server.port as 8181.
The application is running on port 8080.
The pom.xml is the following:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

Why is this simple project is not working as expected?

I took a look at your pom file, you are not creating any springboot cloud project because typically you will find a corresponding Spring Cloud BOM version in pom.xml if you used https://start.spring.io/, like so
<dependencyManagement>
<dependencies>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.cloud</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-cloud-dependencies</artifactId>
<version>${spring-cloud.version}</version>
<type>pom</type>
<scope>import</scope>
</dependency>
</dependencies>
</dependencyManagement>
That's why the bootstrap file is being dismissed.
Here is a number of spring cloud projects you can use.
You can start by:
A. creating a spring cloud config server project
B. Make your actual project the spring cloud config client
here is the official tutorial
Sorry If I'm not understanding your question properly, but if you are already created a springcloud project, one possible issue is the version...
Here similar issue was raised on Stack Overflow.

The issue has been resolved by just replacing the below dependency
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.cloud</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-cloud-starter-config</artifactId>
</dependency>
instead of
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.cloud</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-cloud-config-server</artifactId>
</dependency>
Didn't fully understand the issue, but can help with what we were doing to fetch config from a config server for a certain microservice.
as in your case, users microservice will have a dependency like this in pom.xml
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.cloud</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-cloud-starter-config</artifactId>
</dependency>
And project will have a file called bootstrap.yml or bootstrap.properties as below
spring:
application:
name: user-service
cloud:
config:
uri: <config-server-url>
username: <if-exists>
password: <if-exists>
hope this will be helpful to resolve your issue.
but it seems there is an issue with "name": "https://github.com/balanjaneyulu23/PhotoAppConfiguration/file:C:\Users\admin\AppData\Local\Temp\config-repo-8473851427074645327\application.properties"
In your app.properties or JAVA_OPTS end your path with / such that its not read as a file
-Dspring.config.location=/app/etc/
As you can see i got same error.
In maven panel its clearly shows that main reason of error is dependency. You have to import correct version of dependencies.
First thing you have to do is make sure that your config server is up.
For example you have xxx-dev.yml in your config file. You have to access this config file with http://localhost:8888/xxx/dev. (in this example config server process on port 8888)
If your config server up then you should check your dependencies & properties file in your project which will use config server.
Your project application.properties file
# APPLICATION NAME
spring.application.name=xxx
# PROFILE
spring.profiles.active=dev
# CONFIG SERVER
spring.config.import=optional:configserver:http://localhost:8888
Your project pom.xml file
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.cloud</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-cloud-starter-config</artifactId>
</dependency>
Do not forget the add spring-cloud.version property into the pom.xml file. It will help you to import correct version of config client.
...
<properties>
<java.version>17</java.version>
<spring-cloud.version>2022.0.0</spring-cloud.version>
</properties>
...
After correcting the dependency it will be work fine.

Whitelabel Error page, Type:Not Found Status:404

We recently upgraded our spring boot version from 1.5.10 to 2.1.2 and I'm facing an issue. When the service is deployed on j boss server, it says service Not found and throws an error of White label error page when I call the service in the swagger by https://host:port/serviceName/swagger-ui.html but if i call https://host:port/swagger-ui.html I could access the service and everything works fine. Can some one let me know what will be the issue. Appreciated for the help.
There is nothing change in the pom.xml or bootstrap.yml, I have just upgraded the spring boot versions. Everything else is same as previous.

Seems like you "lost" your context-path. I guess you previously specified it using the now deprecated server.contextPath=/serviceName in some form. There are several ways to set it, but the way I do it is configuring it in the application.yaml
server:
servlet:
context-path: serviceName
or application.properties
server.servlet.context-path=/serviceName
or you could set the context-path by specifying it as a command line argument
java -jar app.jar --server.servlet.context-path=/serviceName
This is just some of the options available. Figure out how you set it before and replace that with server.servlet.context-path

As indicated in my comment, some starters were renamed: https://github.com/spring-projects/spring-cloud/wiki/Spring-Cloud-Edgware-Release-Notes
A number of starters did not follow normal Spring Cloud naming conventions. In Edgware, use of the deprecated starter will log a warning with the name of the new starter to use in its place.
So change:
spring-cloud-starter-eureka-server
to spring-cloud-starter-netflix-eureka-server.
Add the following in to your pom.xml
<properties>
<project.build.sourceEncoding>UTF-8</project.build.sourceEncoding>

Add the following int the Pom.xml
<properties>
<java.version>1.8</java.version>
<spring-cloud.version>Greenwich.RELEASE</spring-cloud.version>
</properties>
<dependencies>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-boot-starter-webflux</artifactId>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.cloud</groupId>

</dependency>
</dependencies>

<artifactId>spring-cloud-dependencies</artifactId>
<version>${spring-cloud.version}</version>
<type>pom</type>
<scope>import</scope>
</dependency>
</dependencies>
</dependencyManagement>
1º) remove dependency from your pom.xml and save the file;
2º) Go to the STS project > right click > Spring > Edit Starters > search to Eureka Discovery Client and mark checkbok > OK.
This action solved my problem.
I also was facing similar problem. Using the below pom.xml helped
<properties>
<java.version>1.8</java.version>
<spring-cloud.version>Hoxton.SR3</spring-cloud.version>
</properties>
<dependencies>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-boot-starter-data-jpa</artifactId>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-boot-starter-web</artifactId>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.cloud</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-cloud-starter-openfeign</artifactId>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.cloud</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-cloud-starter-netflix-ribbon</artifactId>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.cloud</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-cloud-starter-netflix-eureka-client</artifactId>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-boot-devtools</artifactId>
<scope>runtime</scope>
<optional>true</optional>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>com.h2database</groupId>
<artifactId>h2</artifactId>
<scope>runtime</scope>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-boot-starter-test</artifactId>
<scope>test</scope>
<exclusions>
<exclusion>
<groupId>org.junit.vintage</groupId>
<artifactId>junit-vintage-engine</artifactId>
</exclusion>
</exclusions>
</dependency>
</dependencies>
<dependencyManagement>
<dependencies>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.cloud</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-cloud-dependencies</artifactId>
<version>${spring-cloud.version}</version>
<type>pom</type>
<scope>import</scope>
</dependency>
</dependencies>
</dependencyManagement>
<build>
<plugins>
<plugin>
<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-boot-maven-plugin</artifactId>
</plugin>
</plugins>
</build>
Even I got the similar error when I was adding dependency for hystrix.
Error : Project build error: 'dependencies.dependency.version' for
org.springframework.cloud:spring-cloud-starter-hystrix:jar is missing
It worked after changing netflix <artifactId>
from: spring-cloud-starter-hystrix
to: spring-cloud-starter-netflix-hystrix
There are a couple of things here.
I was trying to create the Eureka server and I faced a couple of problems.
First things
If you are using spring-cloud-starter-eureka-server then change it to spring-cloud-starter-netflix-eureka-server.
The link will give the details of the changes.
https://github.com/spring-projects/spring-cloud/wiki/Spring-Cloud-Edgware-Release-Notes
I recently created the starter project from https://start.spring.io/ and it has the latest changes in pom.xml
This is how it looks like
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.cloud</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-cloud-starter-netflix-eureka-client</artifactId>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.cloud</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-cloud-starter-netflix-eureka-server</artifactId>
</dependency>
You need to make sure that the eureka server dependency version is correct.
You can make sure by adding <spring-cloud.version>Greenwich.RELEASE</spring-cloud.version> in properties tag and ${spring-cloud.version} in dependencyManagement's version tag
If you do not see the <dependencyManagement> tag then add the whole dependency in your pom.xml
<properties>
<java.version>1.8</java.version>
<spring-cloud.version>Greenwich.RELEASE</spring-cloud.version>
</properties>
<dependencyManagement>
<dependencies>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.cloud</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-cloud-dependencies</artifactId>
<version>${spring-cloud.version}</version>
<type>pom</type>
<scope>import</scope>
</dependency>
</dependencies>
</dependencyManagement>
I hope it helps.
After setting the version:
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.cloud</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-cloud-starter-netflix-eureka-client</artifactId>
<version>3.0.0</version>
</dependency>
the error disappeared. Probably not the best solution for production.
Try adding bellow global version,
<properties>
<java.version>11</java.version>
<spring-cloud.version>2020.0.2</spring-cloud.version>
</properties>
Then the dependency without version tag as bellow,
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.cloud</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-cloud-starter-netflix-eureka-server</artifactId>
</dependency>
This may help some.
I tried all the answers posted above and none of them work. The only bulletproof method which worked for me is to create a demo project at https://start.spring.io/ and choose the dependencies Eureka Discovery Client SPRING, then see the pom.xml of the demo project and compare with your current POM.
The demo pom.xml generated from start.spring.io is posted below, I have included comments to list the code I was missing in my XML and upon including I was able to get the compile it successfully.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

Please include the differences in your current XML.
I Find the solution by trying two things and both solved the problem, I guess it is the issue with the netflix-eureka server version.
Method 1: Simply Use JDK 11.
Method 2: If you are using JDK 8.
Then add this version tag with version 3.0.0,
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.cloud</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-cloud-starter-netflix-eureka-server</artifactId>
<version>3.0.0</version>
</dependency>
this is though not the best practice
and will give the warning of
Overriding managed version 3.1.1 for spring-cloud-starter-netflix-eureka-server
however, it will remove the error.
adding this in pom.xml after dependencies node worked for me.
<dependencyManagement>
<dependencies>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.cloud</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-cloud-dependencies</artifactId>
<version>${spring-cloud.version}</version>
<type>pom</type>
<scope>import</scope>
</dependency>
</dependencies>
</dependencyManagement>
This worked for me:
I changed my starter parent version from 3.0.0 to 2.7.3 and cloud version to 2021.0.3
<parent>
<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-boot-starter-parent</artifactId>
<version>2.7.3</version>
<relativePath/> <!-- lookup parent from repository -->
</parent>
<properties>
<java.version>17</java.version>
<spring-cloud.version>2021.0.3</spring-cloud.version>
</properties>
Resolved after adding spring-cloud-dependencies and the netflix repositories

For all those who still having the error after trying above mentioned troubleshooting, they can add this dependency management in pom.xml, it should work.
<dependencyManagement>
<dependencies>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.cloud</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-cloud-dependencies</artifactId>
<version>${spring-cloud.version}</version>
<type>pom</type>
<scope>import</scope>

</dependencies>
</dependencyManagement>

please help me out to find which jar I am missing such that it is not getting in application properties file.
thanks in advance.
Could you try using: spring-boot-starter-parent with 1.5.x.RELEASE since you are using Spring Cloud Dalston.RELEASE ?
