How to make my Provisioned Capacity Lambdas properly scale down/in? - aws-lambda

I have a number of Lambdas that are running with provisioned concurrency. They scale up properly when users are hitting our site, and everything works great there. Unfortunately, at night when nobody is hitting our site, it's not scaling back down. Our AWS bill is now a good $1-2k higher than it should be.
Here's what I see in the Cloudwatch Alarms when there are no users on the site. Specifically, it says Insufficient Data beside the alarm that should be scaling the provisioned concurrency down.
How do I configure my Cloudwatch AutoScaling alarms so that they scale down properly? There are no requests on the site at all.

I think I've figured this out. Provisioned Concurrency alarms have a setting on what to do when there is "Insufficient data" (i.e. no data).
There's a setting way down on the metric (open the Advanced Configuration section).
I had this set to Treat missing data as missing and this needs to be set to Treat missing data as bad (breaching threshold) for the Lambda Provisioned concurrency to be scaled down when there are no users.
In my case, I've opened up a ticket with the serverless-provisioned-concurrency-autoscaling plugin to get this fixed, since I don't control it myself.

AWS Aurora / Lambda serverless production environment exhibiting occasional spikes

We've been running our production web app off AWS Lambda / API Gateway, with an Aurora serverless database. Things had been running smoothly for over a year, but recently (coinciding with much increased periods of peak usage) we've experienced temporary slowness, and in the worst case unavailability, due to some kind of bottleneck that results in a spike in the number of DB connections and 4XX and 5XX from our two APIs.
We're using the serverless-mysql library to execute queries and manage DB connections.
Some potential causes of the issue that have been eliminated:
There are no long-running queries locking up tables or anything of that sort (as demonstrated by show full processlist in MySQL), in fact no query runs longer than 1s accordingly to our slow_log
All calls to await serverlessMysql.query() are immediately followed by await serverlessMysql.end()
Our database manager class is instantiated outside the Lambda handler, so it isn't reinstantiated every time a Lambda instance is reused
We've adjusted the config options for serverless-mysql so that retries aren't so aggresive. The default config makes it very aggressive in retrying to connect, both in frequency and number of retries. This has definitely helped, but has not eliminated the problem.
What details can I post that might help someone diagnose this problem? It's a major pain in the ass.
It would be helpful to see the load this application is getting. Which I know is easier said than done with Lambda.
You sort of hinted at it, but it's possible you're hitting the Max Connections() on the 'capacity class' your aurora serverless instance is set to. I've hit this a few times. It's hard to discover with lambda and serverless aurora because you don't have the same logging you would traditionally have.
Outside of that, the core issue you're experiencing seems to be related to spikes created from your application - so you need to discover if a query is maybe just inefficient, and running too many times at once. These are almost impossible to troubleshoot with Lambda logs. But db locks still occur with aurora serverless.
To help track down the issue, you could try the following:
Setup APM
I highly, highly, recommend getting something like NewRelic setup and monitoring your Lambda function.
I'm pretty sure NR has a free trial option, and tracking down a problem like this would be seemingly simple with an APM. I can't tell you how much easier problems like this are to solve with a solid apm.
Monitor traffic ingress
Again, I'm not sure of what this application is doing, but it could be possible that a spike in network traffic from a particular user kicks off a load of queries that make things go awry. Setup a free Cloudflare account or some other proxy if you can, and determine network traffic more easily.

502 server error in Google App Engine Flexible when load testing with JMeter

I have deployed a simple Spring boot app in Google App Engine Flexible. The app. has two APIs, one to add the user data into the DB (xxx.appspot.com/add) the other to get all the user data from the DB (xxx.appspot.com/all).
I wanted to see how GAE scales for the load, hence used JMeter to create a load with 100 user concurrency ramped up in 10 seconds and calls these two APIs in half a second delay, forever. While it runs fine for sometime (with just one instance), it starts to fail after 30 seconds or so with a "java.net.SocketException" or "The server responded with a status of 502".
After this error, when I try to access the same API from the browser, it displays,
Error: Server Error
The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your
request. Please try again in 30 seconds.
The service is back to normal after 30 mins or so, and whenever the load test happens it repeats the same behavior as mentioned above. I expect GAE to auto-scale based on the load coming in to handle it without any down time (using multiple instances), instead it just crashes or blocks the service (without any information in the log). My app.yaml configuration is,

The solution was to increase the resource configuration, details below.
Given that I did not set a resource parameter, it defaulted to the pre-defined values for both CPU and Memory. In this case, the default
memory was set at 0.6GB. App Engine Flex instances uses about 0.4GB
for overhead processes. Given Java is known to consume higher memory, there is a
great likelihood that the overhead processes consumed more than the
approximate 0.4GB value. Now instances in App Engine are restarted due
to a variety of reasons including optimization due to memory use. This
explains why your instances went off and it shows Tomcat is starting
up (they got restarted) and ends up in 502 error due to the nginx is
not able to complete the request. Fixing the above may lessen if not completely eliminate the 502s.
After I have specified the resources attribute and increased the configuration in app.yaml 502 error seems to be gone.

Policy for EC2 and ELB based on number of transcoding processes on each instance

I need to transcode massive number of audio files on a series of auto-scaling instances behind an ELB. The core of transcoding script is based on Node.Js and FFMPEG. Queuing is impossible because users are not patience! I need to control the number of transcodings on each instance to avoid CPU 100% problem.
My questions:
A- Is there any way to define a policy for ELB to control the number of connections to each instance? if not is there any parameter to control average CPU utilization on each instance and add a new one after triggering level? (I have found this slide but it is not complete) If it adds a new instance on the fly how much it takes time the new instance be 100% operative to serve the user ( I mean does auto scaling have long latency?)
B- Is there another alternative architecture to achieve same transcoding solution? (I have included my current idea to this answer as a drawing). I can not use third party solutions like Transcoding.com I need to have my native solution.
C- I use node.js for each instance and by socket to the user browser show progress. From browser side I send regularly some ajax request to the node.js side to get the progress information. Does this mechanism has problem with sticky session?

If your scaling needs to take place in response to individual requests on the server (i.e. a single request would require X number of machines to execute in desired timeframe), then autoscaling is probably not going to be the answer for you, as you will have delay as the new instances become active. You will also potentially have much higher cost to run service in such manner as you could scale up and time a number of times in response to individual request, charging you for one hour minimum for each instance that is started.
If however you are concerned with autoscaling, to for example, increase your fleet 50% during peak times when you get request volume spikes (i.e. you already have many servers serving many requests, but you just need to keep latency down during peak hours by adding more instances), then autoscaling should probably work just fine for you.
There are any number of triggers you can configure to control scaling events in such a case.
ELB does support session affinity ("sticky" sessions).
You will want to use an AWS SDK. Normally you'd use one of the official ones for C#, Ruby etc. Since you're on node.js, try using this SDK on github to monitor, throttle and create instance connection pools etc.

EC2 for handling demand spikes

I'm writing the backend for a mobile app that does some cpu intensive work. We anticipate the app will not have heavy usage most of the time, but will have occasional spikes of high demand. I was thinking what we should do is reserve a couple of 24/7 servers to handle the steady-state of low demand traffic and then add and remove EC2 instances as needed to handle the spikes. The mobile app will first hit a simple load balancing server that does a simple round-robin user distribution among all the available processing servers. The load balancer will handle bringing new EC2 instances up and turning them back off as needed.
Some questions:
I've never written something like this before, does this sound like a good strategy?
What's the best way to handle bringing new EC2 instances up and back down? I was thinking I could just create X instances ahead of time, set them up as needed (install software, etc), and then stop each instance. The load balancer will then start and stop the instances as needed (eg through boto). I think this should be a lot faster and easier than trying to create new instances and install everything through a script or something. Good idea?
One thing I'm concerned about here is the cost of turning EC2 instances off and back on again. I looked at the AWS Usage Report and had difficulty interpreting it. I could see starting a stopped instance being a potentially costly operation. But it seems like since I'm just starting a stopped instance rather than provisioning a new one from scratch it shouldn't be too bad. Does that sound right?
This is a very reasonable strategy. I used it successfully before.
You may want to look at Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) in combination with Auto Scaling. Conceptually the two should solve this exact problem.
Back when I did this around 2010, ELB had some problems with certain types of HTTP requests that prevented us from using it. I understand those issues are resolved.
Since ELB was not an option, we manually launched instances from EBS snapshots as needed and manually added them to an NGinX load balancer. That certainly could have been automated using the AWS APIs, but our peaks were so predictable (end of month) that we just tasked someone to spin up the new instances and didn't get around to automating the task.
When an instance is stopped, I believe the only cost that you pay is for the EBS storage backing the instance and its data. Unless your instances have a huge amount of data associated, the EBS storage charge should be minimal. Perhaps things have changed since I last used AWS, but I would be surprised if this changed much if at all.
First with regards to costs, whether an instance is started from scratch or from a stopped state has no impact on cost. You are billed for the amount of compute units you use over time, period.
Second, what you are looking to do is called autoscaling. What you do is setup up a launch config that specifies an AMI you are going to use (along with any user-data configs you are using, the ELB and availiabilty zones you are going to use, min and max number of instances, etc. You set up a scaling group using that launch config. Then you set up scaling policies to determine what scaling actions are going to be attached to the group. You then attach cloud watch alarms to each of those policies to trigger the scaling actions.
You don't have servers in reserve that you attach to the ELB or anything like that. Everything is based on creating a single AMI that is used as the template for the servers you need.

What exactly happens when I change number of Azure role instances?

I observe the following weird behavior. I have an Azure web role which is deployed on love Azure cloud. Now I click "Configure" in the Azure Management Portal and change the number of instances - the portal shows some "activity". Now I open the browser and navigate to the URL assigned to my deployment and start refreshing the page something like once per two seconds. The page reloads fine many times and then fro some time it will stop reloading - the request will be rejected, then after something like half a minute the requests are handled normally.
What is happening? Is the web server temporarily stopped? How do I change number of instances so that HTTP requests to the role are handled at all times?
When you change the configuration file, your current instance might be restarted. This might be the reason you met with, which your website didn't response in about 30 seconds.

What you are doing is manual. Have you looked at the SDK for autoscaling Azure?

Check out the demo at the 18 minute mark. It doesn't answer your question directly, but its a much more configurable/dynamic way of scaling Azure.
Azure updates your roles one update domain at a time, so in theory you should see no downtime when updating the config (provided you have at least two instances). However, if you refresh the browser every couple of seconds, it's possible that your requests go always to the same instance due to keep-alive.
It would be interesting to know what the behavior is if you disable keep-alives for your webrole. Note that this will have a performance impact, so you'll probably want to re-enable keep-alives after the exercise.
