Spring JPA calling repository method inside Entity's life cycle method - spring-boot

Question

I have a requirement where i need to update a column update_datetime in a table whenever an entity is saved(insert/update). Also, i have to update date time with the database current time not the app server current time.
To do so, i have the below code

It works fine during insert but it is executing updateDateTime = repo.findCurrentDatetime(); multiple times and finally throw errors as

If it is app server's time, i could simply use the below code. But the requirement is database time

Also i tried to achieve the same using both DB layer and JPA layer by making this column as
update_datetime DEFAULT GETDATE() NOT NULL

This is working fine during insert but not on update. In sybase i think there is no straight forward way to set default value while update. I posted a question regarding this and refer for more details here
Another option is make this column not null and make the developers set this value explicitly in service layers but in all the existing places we have to do the code change and this is not an option

I believe we should not invoke EntityManager or make any query operations in Entity life cycle methods. If that is the case, then please suggest some good approach to achieve this requirement.

The problem with your current approach is that it violates the JPA spec which explicitly states that you should not use the EntityManager during processing of lifecycle events:
In general, the lifecycle method of a portable application should not invoke EntityManager or query operations, access other entity instances, or modify relationships within the same persistence context. A lifecycle callback method may modify the non-relationship state of the entity on which it is invoked.
But you may access JDBC, so I'd recommend to get a JdbcTemplate instead of a repository and use that to obtain the database time.
