When trying to run the playbook, the following error is shown:

The offending line appears to be:

topic: X is not a valid Ansible statement.
If I understand correctly, you want to pass in a variable named topic to the tasks file.
If so, this is the way to do it:
---
- name: Register topic
include: registration.yml
vars:
topic: "{{ item }}"
with_items: "{{ kafka_topic }}"
Where kafka_topic is a list / map of items.
Also, note that with_items is being deprecated and replaced by the loop.
If you want to access the item with a diff name, try this
- name: Register topic
include: registration.yml
loop: "{{ kafka_topic }}"
loop_control:
loop_var: topic
Then in your registration.yml you can use the looped item as {{ topic }}

I'm writing a playbook and want to loop a role over a variable that gets its value from the user. however that value might not always be a list of items, it might be a single value and whenever that happens it throws an error.
My Task:

Have you tried the: "| list" filter?

You could test if the variable is a string, and if so, transform it into a single-item list. Something like this:

I am trying to use a register in Ansible playbook to store my output. Below is the code which i am using.

I need different outputs to be stored in different register variables based on the items as mentioned in the code. It is failing and not able to proceed. Any help would be appreciated.

I think you need to put quotes around it:
register: "{{ item }}_service_status"
Or you can use set_fact (1, 2, 3, 4)
register all the output to a single static variable output and then use a loop to iteratively build a new variable service_status (a list) by looping over each item in the static variable output

IIUC, this link from the Ansible docs shows how to use register inside a loop (see another example in this SO post).
A couple of points
it may be more convenient to assign the list (XXX, YYY, ZZZ) to a separate variable (eg. 1, 2)
I don't know if this is part of the problem, but with_items is no longer the recommended approach to loop over a variable: instead use loop - see here for an example

I am stuck in iterating over the list of a dictionary. Sample vars.yml and the minimal playbook is bellow.

My Jinja2 template produces a list of dictionaries in YAML format as below:

Anyhow, when I am iterating the dictionary, I am not able to get for example a username or group.
Most far I got is getting a fatal error message saying:
fatal: [localhost]: FAILED! => {"msg": "with_dict expects a dict"}
I know how to iterate over the list, but I don't have an idea why it fails here.
The users is not a dictionary, its a list variable of dictionaries.
if you want to parse this variable in a loop, you can use:
- debug:
msg: "username: {{ item.username }}, group: {{ item.group }}"
with_items:
- "{{ users.users }}"

UPDATE
i noticed now that when including the var file, you pass the name: users instruction as well. this cause all the variables of the file to be placed under the users variable. So to refer to the users list which is defined in the variable file, you need to use users.users.
updated the with_items to:
with_items:
- "{{ users.users }}"
Thanks to other stackoverflow users, I have managed to pull some data out of a variable registered by the digital_ocean ansible module. I attempted to use loop_control to print only part of the huge variable that is registered. Here is an extract from the role:

I'm obviously doing it wrong here, as it prints the whole variable as well as the debug message. I don't quite understand loop_control at this point, but does anyone know if it's possible to use it in this manner with this module?
debug action has result['_ansible_verbose_always'] = True, so it will always print full item, no matter what your label is (although label: "{{item}}" doesn't change anything, try label: "{{ item.droplet.ip_address }}").
If you just need to list all your IP addresses, use map filter and single debug statement:

I need to be able to set variables using tasks in Ansible. I use set_fact for this, but cannot seem to access the fact I set with this. What is wrong with the code below:

You have spaces before and after =...

Avoid var= shortcut syntax. Use original YAML syntax instead, it gives less errors:
