i am working on a chess engine and recently decided to rewrite our makefile. I have decided to go for a recursive makefile which features a set of options to compile with:
NAMING ?= 1
STATIC ?= 0
NATIVE ?= 0
DETECT ?= 1
PGO ?= 0
DEBUG ?= 0
LTO ?= 0
PEXT ?= 0
Based on the flags above, I generate the FLAGS to build my program. The main target of my makefile is called build. My makefile uses the flags above and generates all the options. Theoretically the makefile works fine if i call it like make build PGO=1 NATIVE=1 .... Now this is the behaviour I wanted to have. Furthermore I had the idea to do a recursive makefile which predefines a few of those options like:
native:
$(_MAKE) build DEBUG=0 NATIVE=1 PGO=0 LTO=1 DETECT=1 NAMING=$(NAMING) STATIC=$(STATIC) EXE_NAME=$(EXE_NAME)
pgo:
$(_MAKE) build DEBUG=0 NATIVE=1 PGO=1 LTO=1 DETECT=1 NAMING=$(NAMING) STATIC=$(STATIC) EXE_NAME=$(EXE_NAME)
The problem is that I am unable to overwrite those specified variables in the recursive makefile. Lets say I call make pgo, it goes into recursive make and calls
$(_MAKE) build DEBUG=0 NATIVE=1 PGO=1 LTO=1 DETECT=1 NAMING=$(NAMING) STATIC=$(STATIC) EXE_NAME=$(EXE_NAME)
When i try to specify PGO := 0 in the makefile, it seems to have no impact on the PGO variable. It seems like I cannot overwrite it when called the way I do it. The complete makefile is the following:
_THIS := $(realpath $(dir $(abspath $(lastword $(MAKEFILE_LIST)))))
_ROOT := $(_THIS)/..
_SRC := $(_ROOT)/src_files
_BIN := $(_ROOT)/bin
_MAKE := $(MAKE) --no-print-directory -C $(_THIS) -e

Does anyone know how I can overwrite variables in recursive makefiles? I am very happy for any help!
From the manual:
If a variable has been set with a command argument, then ordinary
assignments in the makefile are ignored. If you want to set the
variable in the makefile even though it was set with a command
argument, you can use an override directive...
Like so:
override PGO := 0

I am trying to create a makefile to control the build process. I use eclipse and I have a lot of projects some of which are shared libraries. So if I build a project that is using a library, then I would like the library to be built if it is out of date. The seems pretty standard. I just cannot make it work.
I am making the linking dependent on the libraries, and I (try to) provide a rule for building the libraries. But when I do it this way, it seems to be building the library over and over again - and it never finishes. What am I missing?

i have been trying to set up Caffe on my macbook for three days now... maybe you can help me?
i followed several tutorials including these:
the official berkeley vision caffe installation guide
https://gist.github.com/kylemcdonald/0698c7749e483cd43a0e
https://eddiesmo.wordpress.com/2016/12/20/how-to-set-up-caffe-environment-and-pycaffe-on-os-x-10-12-sierra/
but whenever i try to run
make all
i get this error:
LD -o .build_release/lib/libcaffe.so.1.0.0
clang: warning: argument unused during compilation: '-pthread'
Undefined symbols for architecture x86_64:

..............
ld: symbol(s) not found for architecture x86_64
clang: error: linker command failed with exit code 1 (use -v to see invocation)
make: *** [.build_release/lib/libcaffe.so.1.0.0] Error 1
here's what i did so far:
i was originally on mac os 10.11 el capitan with an outdated xcode (7.3). in order to update xcode i had to upgrade to Sierra (mac os 10.12)
i have xcode 8 now, but downgraded the xcode command line tools to 7.3.2. (i can't remember why but it was recommended for Caffe or maybe CUDA)
i don't have an NVIDIA graphics card but still installed CUDA (from what i read online it's a prerequisite for caffe)... i tried cuda 7 (as recommended on the berkeley vision site) and currently cuda 8
right now i'm using CUDA-8
i used homebrew to install opencv as recommended online (opencv 2.4.13.2)
i use openBLAS
i use protobuf 3.3.0
i added opencv_highgui opencv_imgproc opencv_core opencv_imgcodecs to LIBRARIES in Makefile
i realize that the linker errors have to do with libc++ vs libstdc++ ! i manually checked all kinds of dependencies with otool -L to see if any still used libstdc++ but it seems they should all be built with libc++.
any hints or advice?
pls help!
thank you!

Just a couple of hints and guesses.
This isn't necessarily a libc++/libstd++ inconsistency.
opencv_imgcodecs is only available in OpenCV 3+, so that may make some problems.
If you checked the opencv libraries and they were all linked to libc++, check if this command ld -lopencv_highgui, and for the other libraries as well, won't tell you the library is not found.
Another thing to check is making sure you only have one OpenCV installation, sometimes a conflicting copy may cause these problems.
You may also try to compile a standalone OpenCV example code, to make sure this is a problem with Caffe.
opencv_imgcodecs is only available in OpenCV 3+, so that may make some problems.
One last thing: remove everything, enable the cpu only mode to get rid of CUDA dependency, and this time use the latest version of everything, specifically: Latest Xcode command line tools and OpenCV3.
Posting your Makefile in your question could help, too.
You can set LDFLAGS before execute make all
$ LDFLAGS="`pkg-config --libs protobuf` `pkg-config --libs opencv`"
$ make all

any help will be appreciated
TAB character in Brackets editor were replaced by 4 spaces (sp sp sp sp).
Changing to other editor (TextMate) solved the problem
All these lines are wrong:
flash-jlink: flash.jlink $(JLINK) flash.jlink
flash.jlink: printf "loadbin $(OUTPUT_BINARY_DIRECTORY)/$(OUTPUT_FILENAME).bin $(FLASH_START_ADDR)\nr\ng\nexit\n" >flash.jlink
erase-all: erase-all.jlink $(JLINK) erase-all.jlink
# Write to NVMC to enable erase, do erase all, wait for completion. reset
erase-all.jlink: printf "w4 4001e504 2\nw4 4001e50c 1\nsleep 100\nr\nexit\n" > erase-all.jlink
run-debug: $(JLINKD_GDB) $(JLINK_OPTS) $(JLINK_GDB_OPTS) -port $(GDB_PORT_NUMBER)
I don't know if you were just careless with your cut and paste, but there must be a newline and TAB on the next line, or a semicolon, before the command. Like this:
flash-jlink: flash.jlink
$(JLINK) flash.jlink
flash.jlink:
printf "loadbin $(OUTPUT_BINARY_DIRECTORY)/$(OUTPUT_FILENAME).bin $(FLASH_START_ADDR)\nr\ng\nexit\n" >flash.jlink
erase-all: erase-all.jlink
$(JLINK) erase-all.jlink
# Write to NVMC to enable erase, do erase all, wait for completion. reset
erase-all.jlink:
printf "w4 4001e504 2\nw4 4001e50c 1\nsleep 100\nr\nexit\n" > erase-all.jlink
run-debug:
$(JLINKD_GDB) $(JLINK_OPTS) $(JLINK_GDB_OPTS) -port $(GDB_PORT_NUMBER)

I'm running Arch Linux and have installed the cuda-sdk and cuda-toolkit from the repositories. I've compiled the libraries inside /opt/cuda-sdk/CUDALibraries fine.
No I go to compile the sdk examples by running make in /opt/cuda-sdk/C and get the following error:
# make

The Makefile itself essentially seems to just include the file /opt/cuda-sdk/C/common/common.mk, which is:

# The following definition is a template that gets instantiated for each SM
# version (sm_10, sm_13, etc.) stored in SMVERSIONS. It does 2 things:
# 1. It adds to OBJS a .cu_sm_XX.o for each .cu file it finds in CUFILES_sm_XX.
# 2. It generates a rule for building .cu_sm_XX.o files from the corresponding
# .cu file.
#
# The intended use for this is to allow Makefiles that use common.mk to compile
# files to different Compute Capability targets (aka SM arch version). To do
# so, in the Makefile, list files for each SM arch separately, like so:
# This will be used over the default rule abov
#
# CUFILES_sm_10 := mycudakernel_sm10.cu app.cu
# CUFILES_sm_12 := anothercudakernel_sm12.cu
#

I have checked for libcuda and can find it where I think it should be:
# ls /usr/lib | grep libcuda
libcuda.so.1
libcuda.so.304.32
Is there something obvious I need to do to get these to compile? Is this a problem with the CUDA makefile or with my system?
The answer was suggested in comments, and the OP found the solution:
I added a symlink:
ln -s /usr/lib/libcuda.so.1 /usr/lib/libcuda.so
and it compiled fine.
