"Beautifying" an OS X disk image - macos

When I downloaded Skype, I noticed that, in place of a normal "disk image" icon, there was a custom icon, and when I double clicked on the icon, the window used a colorful image as the background, prompting me to drag the skype icon into the applications folder.
How can I do that with my applications?
Thanks,
Jason

Let me add to the other answers jwz's howto on setting view options on .dmg files. This is the simplest one that I got to work with no problems.
Also, to change the icon from the default .dmg icon:
In the Finder, open an inspector window (^I) for the file whose icon you want to use, click on the icon at the top (it will get a blue border) and copy it to the clipboard (^C).
Then open another inspector for your .dmg, click on the icon and press ^V to paste
(you can change the icon for any file like this).
For this kind of thing, you can always look at open-source programs and see what they do to get a similar result. For example here are the relevant source files for building pretty dmg files in:
Adium
Miro

If you’re interested in a commercial solution, there are a number of DMG designer apps available, including the following I gleaned from a MacUpdate search:
DMG Packager
DMG Architect
DMG Canvas

This is a great freeware solution for a custom background with zero hassle:

How to display thumbnails like Explorer or Finder

I have written a Firemonkey app and it saves its files with extension ".qrmx".
In both Explorer (Windows) and Finder (Mac), its thumbnail looks like a blank sheet of paper with the top right corner curled over. This is, I think, the generic thumbnail. How can I introduce a thumbnail specific to my app?
It finally dawned on me that I needed to associate my program files with my program. For Windows, I was able to do this within the Inno Setup installer by defining Registry settings. For OS X, I was able to do it with settings in the info.plist file. Both operating systems then used the appropriate icons from my app.

Change Android Studio Icon in the Mac OS Dock

First up, I am not sure if this is the place to ask. Since there isn't a lot of Android-Studio tags on Super User and I know that a lot of people uses Android Studio on StackOverFlow. So please correct me if I'm wrong on the comment section to save me from the down votes.
So...
I tried changing the default icon of the Android Studio IDE on my Mac and I was able to do it. The problem is when I open it, it reverts to the original icon it has, then when I quit the IDE it returns to the icon I selected. Is it possible to make it always stay with the same icon I pasted in Finder Get Info?
Here is the icon I changed it to:
But it changes to this when it is opened:
In Mac OS X, there is an extra file for icons,
very commercial software always loads this file.
When you right-click the application "Android Studio",
and click on "Show Package Contents", then navigate to
Contents > Resources and replace "Android Studio.icns"
with an icon you created in a photo-editing or illustration
software (export to .icns or use a .icns icon converter).

How to set a Finder-window background image on a disk image volume

Generally to distribute a simple cocoa application we make dmg of its release folder. When we double click on it, it mounts its image and displays an un-editable window with .app and/or other files, such dSYM, contained within it. Right now the un-editable window appears with white background and icons of files within it.
My requirement is:
To customize un-editable window such
that I can display some images in
background, change location and size
of icons and customize other
appearance features within it. eg. Skype, Growl install windows.
Can anyone suggest how can I implement it?
Thanks,
Miraaj
The cheapest way would be to create the disk image normally, mount it, tell the Finder to open its window, and tell the Finder to set the window's background picture. Here's the source code for the Growl project's script for this.
The downside to this solution is that you pretty much can't use your Mac while the script runs, lest you throw the script off track.
The easiest way would be DropDMG.
An easy trick is:
Create a read/write enabled dmg, set
it up like you want it to look, load
the app and then convert it to a
compressed read only dmg.
cheers... :)

Windows Mobile 6.5 Running Program List Icon

I've got an windows mobile 6.5 application I'm developing and am having trouble with one icon. At the top right hand of the screen there is an icon that, when clicked, will display a list of programs running the background with the option to close them.
When my program is in this list, it's icon does not show up as the others do.
I'm my exe I've got an .ico for 16x16, 22x22, 32x32, 36x36, 44x44, 45x45, 60x60, and 64x64, with the optional 90x90 png and registry setting in my cab.
What am I missing?
I'm just guessing here, but is this an HTC phone? Stock Windows Mobile does not have a "task list" icon in the system tray, so this task list is provided by the OEM. You would need to find out how they are obtaining the icon.
Chances are they are not obtaining it from the cab, but are actually getting it from your top level app window. You should check you're specifying the right icon in your WNDCLASS structure when calling RegisterClass. It is pretty common in WM to forget this because normally this icon is not visible.
Windows Embedded Handheld (Windows Mobile) 6.5/6.5.3 Appications use the exe embedded ico files only if there is no icon via registry available. In those cases the icon also look very ugly in the start menu. So you will have to add a registry entry to an icon file.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Shell\StartInfo\Start\MyApp.lnk]
"Icon"="\Windows\myapp.png"

How do I define a Shoes applications icon?

I have created an application in shoes and the .dmg(.app) and .exe version work on there respective target systems, but how do I control the icon that is used for the executable files?
I just can't find any documentation on this. I plan on using many little helpful shoes applications and would like to have different icons to visually distinguish between them.
Not from Shoes, no. I'll let _why himself answer this one:
1 - changing the application icon! how to?
You'll need to use a tool like IcoFX.
http://icofx.ro/ Eventually, I'd
like to make this more automatic, but
it'll be challenging because you'll
still need to design several different
pixel sizes.
IF I prepare my images (uncompressed tiffs) for the different size of icons. For OS X 10.5:
512x512
256x256
128x128
32x32
16x16
I can then use /Developer/Applications/Utilities/Icon Composer.app (Included with the xCode) to create an .icns
IcoFX can then be used (on Windows) to convert the icns to a windows .icn.
So I now I have got my Mac Icon and my Windows Icon.
For the DMG on the Mac I take the .app out of the .dmg that shoes creates. I open the .app as folder by right-clicking 'Show Package Contents' then replace the Shoes.icns and /Resources/Shoes.icns
The app then need to be repacked in a dmg for distribution I could use iDMG and also add the icns as an icon for the dmg.
For the EXE on Windows I can use IcoFX Resource Editor to change the embedded icon (.icn)
My .dmg (& .app) and .exe all take on the appearance of the new icon.
Until execution then the standard shoes icon appears, on the mac dock, in the upper left of the windows frame and the windows task bar.
I am unsure if the icon stays the same as the shoes icon because it is actually shoes that is running the application or because the .app and the .exe are wrappers for an embedded .shy file which maintains the shoes logo.
