I used to be able to right click Folders in my project and click 'refresh' to refresh the files within them, I don't see the option to do this any more, how do I fix it? The same thing has happened at work and at home.. has it always been like this and have I gone insane?
I still have the option. You might be able to get it back by customizing the context menu. Refresh is under Commands > View in the Customize dialog.
The refresh icon is at the top of the solution explorer for me, does the job

Where is the Sync with active document button in Visual Studio?
I know that I can press Alt + Shift + L and I will get the Sync with active document.
I also know that I can enable in the Options the feature to work every time I focus on another file.
But I can not find a button in the VS interface to do that. Is it even present? I would expect such a button be somewhere in the top of the interface of the VS. Somewhere near the comment/uncomment buttons (that is just my feeling that it is there, I have no proofs or reasons to think so).
I know this might sound silly, but I spent about a day trying to figure out where the button went in the latest VS2019 (Version 16.10.2) update.
After one complete day of using the keyboard shortcut instead, I realised that the Icon has changed to a different Icon.
Note: The Track Active Item in Solution Explorer checkbox should be unchecked to see this Icon, as posted by #Sandro Stadler.
Pretty simple.
If you check this option, the document and solution explorer will be automatically synchronized and the icon will be hidden.
Deselect to show the icon in the solution manager.
In VS 2019 it is in the Solution Explorer window:
I'm not sure if this is right, but I can't view the "code behind" in VB6. Everytime I click the "view code" for an object (for example a button), the code does not display.
Can you help me with this or any workaround for this? I need to do a breakpoint on this.
I ran into the same issue. Could not view the code or the designer.
Seems that VB6 lost track of where things should be displayed, whether offscreen or not I could not tell. Kept clicking View Code and View Object, and neither worked.
Found the solution:
Attempt to open the code or designer that doesn't show up. (It will get opened, just won't show)
Select Window from the menu, then select Cascade.
You should then see the code/designer show up on the screen. No re-install or remove/add needed.
You may need to do this each time, even after saving the .vbp (project) file, upon re-opening VB6 the files once again are not showing for me, but Cascade makes them visible again. (Anyone have any ideas on how to make this more permanent?)
Enjoy!
You may remove the form which is not showing the code in the project explorer window and add it again by right clicking on the project explorer window then select Add -> Form -> (instead of selecting in "New" tab navigate on the "Existing" tab then choose the form you have just remove and try viewing its code again). It will work 100% :D
Double click your controls and the source code will be shown.

what's the purpose of the 'Refresh' command on the solution explorer window?
(When we select a project, the button is enabled)
Its really helpful when you have Show All Files is turned on in a Web application project (this might work for other project types). With the Refresh, you can see files added on the file system level and right-click them to include them in your project.
This may be an overly simple response, but I use the refresh button quite often to populate the Solution Explorer with files that have been created outside of VS.
For example, I use a separate IDE to do my Actionscript work where lots of files get added which VS is not aware of until I refresh the solution explorer window. After they appear, I can now commit them to SourceSafe.
If you have version control integration, the tree view is decorated with source control status annotations. Refresh updates these when they get out of sync.
I was messing around with my toolbars and menus in Visual Studio 08. I noticed that they were behaving strangely. When I closed the "Customize" dialog, my 'Tools' and 'Help' menu were gone (perhaps more, I can't remember what else was there). I don't want to reset everything, as I have been curtailing the VS environment to my exact liking for over a year now, and I have never saved those settings. I have lots of custom commands quirk fixes all around. I don't relish starting over. I guess the lesson is that I should be saving my settings regularly.
Does anyone know how to get the menus back? I didn't even know it was possible to remove the actual menus (not toolbar items)!
Thanks,
Ryan
You could try exporting settings from a clean install, find the section with the menus and only import those? I believe the settings file is registered to visual studio so double clicking it should start the import process.
Not to mention, this would become good practice for exporting and backing up your own settings...
Try to right click on a toolbar click on Customize. Then you can select Menu Bar and click on reset. Not sure if it will work, but it's worth a try.
You can reopen the toolbar by going to "Window > Reset window layout".
I've only tested it with VS 2019.
BUT, IDK if that's what you're asking about...
I have a solution with about 20 projects (that use Devexpress controls) in and when I do a normal solution build (ctrl-shift-B) it says everything is completed sucessfully when in actualy fact it has done nothing. To get it to build i have to right click on the solution and use the batch build option.
I've tried deleting the solution and regetting from TFS and i've even gone as far as reinstalling VS!
Anyone got any clues as to what is going wrong?
Sorry should have added that also tried to build from the main menus aswell.
I've had similar issues. It's a long shot, but right-click your solution and go to Properties -> Configuration Properties. Check to make sure all of your projects have the "Build" option checked.
Perhaps Ctrl+Shift+B has been assigned to one of the "check-to-see-if-it-is-needed-before-building" type of functions?
Check in the keyboard setting:
Right-click the toolbar
Select Customize in the popup menu
Click the Keyboard button in the lower right corner of the dialog
In the new dialog, in the "Press shortcut keys", a bit to the right and below the center, hit Ctrl+Shift+B
Verify that it is bound to Build.BuildSolution
at least that is what it is bound to for me. I notice there is an action named Build.RebuildSolution as well, you should experiment.
