Accessing a raw disk partition in Windows Vista requires kernel mode control, as opposed to for instance WinXP where you can access it from user mode.
However, I've heard that when it comes to USB flash memory, a partition can still be accessed from user mode even on Windows Vista.
Is this true?

/Robert

You can do this on Vista, you may need admin rights, but no special kernel mode driver is needed.
This question shows how to do it How do I read a disk directly with .Net? I was reading the data off the USB stick directly as the file system on the stick was corrupted.

My mom forgot her password, and she can’t log in to her laptop now. Is there a way for us to get our family pictures? That’s the only thing we really want to recover. I’m not a Windows user, so I’m clueless; any suggestions are more than welcome.
If the windows account is connected to a Microsoft account, the password can be reset through Microsoft directly (i.e outlook.com).
However, I am not aware of a simple way to reset the password of a local user on windows.
An alternative that may work would be to boot from a Linux live USB (DO NOT INSTALL from the USB) and access the files on the disks from there.

Hey Any one please help me !! An unknown extra drive is shown in My Computer and when i tried to open it ... it says Access Denied .... I don't know from where it come from and when i checked it in Disk Management its not their. Please help me to remove that drive.
Below is the screen short of that Drive & Disk Management.
When I restarted my Windows system it's gone.
Remember: You should do a restart, not a shut down.
I think it's related to Windows updates.
I wonder if this could be that 100MB Windows Reserved EFI system partition that you somehow started displaying instead of it being hidden by default.

I recently need to run a program Metro:
http://vcg.isti.cnr.it/downloads/downloads.htm
It is used to measure the difference between two 3d models.
However, this program has to be run in irix 6.2/6.3. But I only have a win8.1 laptop. Is there any way to run it in a shell like cygwin? Or is there any available virtual machine resource of irix platform?
Thanks!
The software you're trying to run is old enough to drive in most countries (compiled in 1998), and was compiled for an operating system that doesn't exist anymore (Irix) that ran on a CPU architecture that's no longer even used for desktop computers (MIPS-II) and was released by a company that doesn't exist anymore either (SGI).
Your chances of getting it to run are practically nil without some major retrocomputing work. Sorry.

What exactly does heart bleed do and how can I protect my Windows XP from heart bleed? I heard that it takes your personal info by using memory. Can I lock my memory so that it can't use it? And if so, some insight on the subject would be nice. :)
I'm going to assume you didn't intentionally install openssl on your XP machine and that you aren't using your XP machine as a server. It's likely that the only thing you really need to worry about is websites you communicate with where the possibility that your information could be stolen could result in a significantly negative outcome for you... you need to make sure those companies have patched their servers if they were affected by the issue.

I have laptop with an external e-sata/USB combo port. I have an internal Seagate SATA drive removed from another laptop. I want to recover the data in this disc. Is it possible to connec t this hardisk through the e-SATA port? If so, what cable would I need to connect in?
You need a SATA-to-eSATA cable for the data. It's pretty standard. It's getting power to the drive that can sometimes be a challenge.
Alternatively, get an external enclosure, or a SATA-compatible dock. I use this one, and have had no troubles with it.
