Whenever I write mouse handling code, the onmousedown/onmouseup/onmousemove model always seemed to force me to produce unnecessarily complex code that would still end up causing all sorts of UI bugs.
The main problem which I see even in major pieces of software these days is the "ghost mouse" event where you drag to outside the window and then let go. Once you return back into the window, the application still thinks you have the mouse down even though the button is up. This is especially annoying when you're trying to highlight something that goes to the border of the screen.
Is there a RIGHT way to write mouse code or is the entire model just flawed?
Ordinarily one captures the mouse events on mouse down so the mouse move and mouse up go through your code regardless of the caret moving out of you application window.
More recently this is a problem when running a VM or remote session, its difficult for apps in these to track the mouse outside of the machine screen area represented by a window on a host.
I'm not sure what environment you're attempting to track mouse buttons in, but the best way to handle this is to have a mouse listener that tracks onmouseup 100% of the time after you've detected onmousedown.
That way, it doesn't matter what screen region the user releases the mouse button in. It will reset no matter where it happens.

I was trying to write a mouse controller app for mac os x which is reading inputs from keyboard and moves the mouse accordingly. By garbage input i will describe the input was intented for a mouse event but it creates text on screen.
Before anyone points to the fact that there is a built in one, It was laggy even in shortest lag setting and cannot registers more than two buttons at the same time (you have to press diagonals to go to the diagonal.) If you accidentally press another button when release of the accident button your motion stops. My first and last reaction was "rubbish!". Adding customization and extra features is my goal.
I want to create a key combination that will block the garbage input to be passed to other programs while it was held. But global monitoring and seems like it always passes the event. And unfortunately I see qqqqqqqwwwwwww like text in unwanted places.
I want to see that when i press q w and up, it will make the mouse go up. But i create qqqqqqqwwwwww mess on the way. My first idea was creating a view on popover and handle events there, but whenever I want to use my mouse from keyboard seeing a popover is anoying and I couldn't find a way to show the popover without leaving any garbage keyboard input.
What should i do in this situation?
You will want to use Quartz Event Taps. Note that for an application to tap keyboard events, it has to be trusted for accessibility (as in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Accessibility). Your app can ask to be made trusted using AXIsProcessTrustedWithOptions().
When I double-click on an animator controller to launch it, the animator tab appears, but when I run the editor, I don't get the usual flow, operations, etc... I only get a static view of the states and transition arrows between them. My parameters do not show the changes they go through either.
I have multiple animations and can switch between them when certain game conditions occur, but nothing really shows when I do so, to see the flow of control, what happens, what goes wrong, the switching, the progress bar, etc...
I have the latest Unity 5.2.0f3 so I wondered if it is just me or others are having a similar problem...
What we need to do is this: Once we hit the play in the editor mode (and have the animator window docked on one side, of course) we just go and click the object in the hierarchy for which we want to analyse the animation flow. And the animator window will start showing the states and the progress bar.
Also, after upgrading to Unity 5.2, it is worth checking the values that were previously set for transition states, for example if vSpeed is greater than 0.1 then start walking. All my set values were messed up; i.e. changed.
I'm trying to understand how to pause and resume interaction in paper.js.
I have the metaball example on a page with an input element on top, and because paper.js steals focus for driving the metaball generation onMouseMove... bad things happen. Like not able to select what you typed.
I understood I could use item.locked = true;, but I don't know what to apply it to because nothing works.
What is the parent Item for paper.js and can I lock it so that everything stops responding to the mouse?
I also couldn't reattach the mousemove event from the Tool, which is why I came to look into item.locked. What's the correct way to remove and reattach mouse events?
We're making a user-space device driver for OS X that moves the cursor using Quartz Events, and we ran into a problem when games — especially ones that run in a windowed mode — can't properly capture the mouse pointer (= contain/keep it within the boundaries of their windows). For example, it would go outside the game window and click on the desktop or nearby inactive applications.
We could fix this if only we could detect when an active application calls CGAssociateMouseAndMouseCursorPosition.
How would you do this? Any ideas are appreciated.

There is an option called Focus Follows Mouse
Focus Follows Mouse - The Mouse pointer will grab automatically change focus to a new window inisde this one app if you mouse over it, instead of having to click a window to get focus, then clicking to do something.

I have written a few different mouse logical layers (for bridging different input devices, etc.). I have found that hooking into the OS level WM_INPUT event is a sure way of getting very real-time mouse position information. There is also a less rigorous solution of just polling the mouse data you need from one of Windows' very primitive DLLs. They are lightning fast. You could poll on a 10ms timer and never see performance loss on a modern machine.
Did anyone notice that in Windows applications the mouse pointer doesn't change from Hourglass back to normal until you move the mouse?
So even if your application has finished a task and the mouse pointer has been set to go back to default, it will stay as an hourglass until you move the mouse. What is the reason for this, and can be it resolved?
I'm not sure if other people have noticed this but it is quite strange and it might be some kind of event-driven way to conserve OS resources.
The dialog box should maintain the logic of the hourglass. The worker thread should send a message to the dialog itself, telling it to start maintaining an hourglass thread. (You could test this by adding a temporary button to the dialog which starts and stops the hourglass.)
Another thing to be aware of is that having a second process set the hourglass of the first is an odd thing to do. An hourglass should only happen due to user action. While an hourglass is up, typically the only action that should be available to the user is "Cancel [whatever operation is keeping the hourglass up]."
Can it be resolved? Call ShowCursor(FALSE) before you call SetCursor(), and ShowCursor(TRUE) afterwards. Should do the job.
