"An unhandled non-continuable exception was thrown during process load" - windows

This error message appears on a colleague's machine when he tries to launch a Windows application he's working on:
An unhandled non-continuable exception was thrown during process load
What does this mean, and how does one go about investigating what is causing it?
I have Googled it, but haven't found a clear answer. It seems to have something to do with problems loading DLLs.

Right I'm looking over this issue in my own code at the moment - for anyone who is having this issue, here's some pointers:
There is a fairly involved thread discussing it here: http://bytes.com/topic/net/answers/555706-unhandled-non-continuable-exception-thrown-during-process-load
Are you linking to Winmm.lib? It's got problems, can you avoid using it?
Are you using C++/CLI? If so, consider delay loading the C++/CLI module.
Any other hints, please post - this crops up from time to time and can be problematic!
More details are on: http://www.dwmkerr.com/post/2012/02/08/Debugger-An-unhandled-non-continuable-exception-was-thrown-during-process-load.aspx

Is there more information in the error message, maybe in the debug console? If there's a stack trace available, it might point you to the problem application, or better yet, the DLL that's causing the problem. The next step would be to see if there's an update available for that DLL.

I found that enabling the "Read&Execute" permission on a dll that was checked in to version control solved this problem.
The first thing I tried was to copy my whole Debug/ directory somewhere and the app ran fine there, then I checked the properties of each of the original dlls and enabled execute.

I had the same issue and it turned out that a DLL compiled for x64 in a x86 project was the culprit. Replacing the DLL with the x86 version resolved the issue.

Dependency Walker: missing dlls

I have been trying to resolve .dll dependencies for the executable file with Dependency Walker. Currently, I am getting missing .dlls in the following form:
API-MS-WIN-XXX
EXT-MS-WIN-XXX
For example:
API-MS-WIN-APPMODEL-IDENTITY-L1-2-0.DLL
API-MS-WIN-APPMODEL-RUNTIME-INTERNAL-L1-1-0.DLL
API-MS-WIN-BASE-UTIL-L1-1-0.DLL
API-MS-WIN-CORE-APIQUERY-L1-1-0.DLL
EXT-MS-WIN-RTCORE-NTUSER-SYSCOLORS-L1-1-0.DLL
Does anybody have any ideas on how to resolve these?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Additional info: I compiled the executable using Visual Studio 2013. The most interesting thing is that I did not receive any errors during compilation. However, I cannot run it due to missing dependencies. I also attached a screenshot of dependency walker:
Update 1: As an attempt to solve the problem I tried to add the path for the libraries that VS used during compilation to the $PATH environment variable without any luck (Dependency Walker still shows unresolved dependencies).
These are API-sets - essentially, an extra level of call indirection introduced gradually since windows 7. Dependency walker development seemingly halted long before that, and it can't handle API sets properly.
So these are all false alarms and nothing to worry about. You're not missing anything.
Also see On API-MS-WIN-XXXXX.DLL, and Other Dependency Walker Glitches.
Edit: Only in Oct 2017 did someone finally try to fill this gap. Meet Dependencies by lucasg. I've only briefly fiddled with it until now, but it handles API sets well and is at least very worthy of attention.
In addition to what #Ofek Shilon said, I usually ignore following dlls that dependency_walker identified as missing when I try to find missing dlls for my program. You will see that your program runs fine when dependency_walker says these dlls are missing.
API-MS-WIN-*.dll
EXT-MS-WIN-*.dll
IESHIMS.dll
EMCLIENT.dll
DEVICELOCKHELPERS.dll
You can search for dlls other than the ones above to resolve your problem.
Dependencies program helped me find a missing DLL in no time. It is open source and available here: https://github.com/lucasg/Dependencies
I also ignore:
EFSCORE.DLL
WPAXHOLDER.DLL

ros::init(...) throws an error - Windows roscpp

I'm trying to use ros in cpp with Visual Studio 2012. I wrote the publisher and subscriber tutorial (http://wiki.ros.org/ROS/Tutorials/WritingPublisherSubscriber%28c%2B%2B%29) and first, I configure the project as says in the guide (http://wiki.ros.org/win_ros/hydro/Msvc%20SDK%20Projects).
Then i compiled an linked the publisher, but when I tried to run it, ros::init(argc,argv,"talker") throws an exception... The console says that I ROS_MASTER_URI is not defined but I've got it defined
There are 2 images here:

Can anyone helps me?
Thanks in advance
So, I had the same issue, although I didn't set the ROS_MASTER_URI globally.
I managed to get around this specific issue by adding
ROS_MASTER_URI=http://localhost:11311
to the debugging environment variables (Project->Properties->Configuration Properties->Debugging->Environment).
However, after implementing the above I got an uncaught exception (Unhandled exception at 0x768bc41f in ros_demo.exe: Microsoft C++ exception: std::bad_alloc at memory location 0x0028f0e4..).
That went away when I built, compiled and ran the project in release mode (which matched my ROS SDK build).
I got the idea for the release/debug build from here:
xstring isn't an OSG specific object, so the error is elsewhere in the
3rd party dependency chain. As I know nothing about your OS and
software setup I can't speculate what this might be.
In general though this type of error could well be a linking issue -
for instance Visual Studio is hopeless at handling different libs
being built debug and release and will crash randomly.
That was fun to discover..

The Following Module was built either with optimizations enabled or without debug information after frame work is changed to 4.0 from 3.5

I am using VS2010.I was changed my project and its dependent projects .Net Framework to 4.0 from 3.5.Now I could not attach the process, due to this I am not able to debug the code.
I have cleaned all the bin folders and rebuild the projects ,but still I am having following error.
Please help me to resolve this..
I'm not sure what the question is here. The error message clearly tells you that you need to
Turn off (disable) optimizations
Turn on (enable) debug info
Rebuild your project so those changes take effect.
Apparently you only did step #3.
Also see vs2010 debugging module was built without debugging information?, which may provide more information.
I also received this error, and did all the right things as described above - those have been my settings all along anyway. I even went so far as deleting the assembly from the long C:\Users... path in the error message - it still didn't cause that message to go away.
Then I tried putting a breakpoint in the source, which should not be allowed if the module really WAS built without debug information. And then ran the program and it stopped at the break point and I could do all the usual debugging.
So right now I'm just ignoring the message. I could do as suggested and disable the 'Warn if no user code on launch' option as suggested in the message, but I'm not doing that until I can spend some time working out why the message comes up at all.
Uncheck this option in Visual Studio 2012.This would solve this issue

Access violation when compiling in debug

I'm trying to profile a C++ project in Embarcadero RAD Studio 2010. To do this I wanted to use AQTime, but I'm running into a bit of a problem.
I can compile and run the application in release mode. But when I compile in debug mode, using the settings mentioned at http://smartbear.com/support/viewarticle/18053/, I get an access violation.
... faulted with message: 'access
violation at 0x062324bd: read of
address 0x62324bd'. Process stopped.
Use Step or Run to continue.
It seems to come when I load a bunch of dll's at the startup. But since it goes well in release mode I can't seem to figure out what could be the cause.
When the access violation occurs I get thrown out into assembly and that isn't one of the languages I'm fluent in ;)
EDIT : When scanning the .exe with Dependency Walker I get a message saying that the following files can't be found
CC32100MT.DLL
INET140.BPL
RTL140.BPL
VCL140.BPL
IESHIMS.DLL
Could this be the problem somehow? Are these debugspecific or is Dependency Walker not giving me correct information? The same files are said to be missing when I try a release compiled version to.
I'm running on Windows 7 x64, if that could be part of the issue. I have had problems before with the symlink-look-alike (user/AppData/Local...) that MS used for some folders. Notably when I ran an apache server and the htdocs folder actually wasn't located where the server thought it was (and where it appeared to be) :)
Have you tried disabling dynamic rtl which can be found in the C++ builder linker options pane?

Error in Output Window - Managed' has exited with code -2147023895 (0x800703e9)

I am unable to run a windows application in Visual Studio 2008. Program has been working fine until I started getting an error in the Output Window - "
The program '[2260] MUS3.vshost.exe: Managed' has exited with code -2147023895 (0x800703e9). " This happens even before execution of the code begins.
Any help ? Thanks in Advance
I am placing the entire error here

Hell, this is not quite an answer, but at least it might help someone. I met with something like the above problem, but in Visual Studio 2005 Pro SP1. Everything had been working and then suddenly nothing worked.
I tried all sorts of different things and ideas... even tried simply creating a new windows application and trying to start it in debug mode (same thing happened, same message appeared - my heart broke seeing the following output again and again from the VS debug output window:
'WindowsApplication1.exe' (Managed): Loaded 'C:\WINDOWS\assembly\GAC_32\mscorlib\2.0.0.0__b77a5c561934e089\mscorlib.dll', Skipped loading symbols. Module is optimized and the debugger option 'Just My Code' is enabled.
Process is terminated due to StackOverflowException.
Ignoring managed exception from unknown thread. The program '[1856] WindowsApplication1.exe: Managed' has exited with code -2147023895 (0x800703e9).
Even thought that i maybe messed the .NET versions on my computer. Well, but at least in my case things finally were much simpler, and maybe this applies for my case only (silly me) - but somehow in Application Properties -> Debug tab, the radio button named "Enable unmanaged code debugging" was unchecked. After checking it, more "libraries" seem to be loaded, albeit with no symbols....
and...
magically the program is started normally and the debugger actually steps in on a breakpoint. i don't quite know or suspect why this think worked out like this - any suggestions are welcome!
This Error occurred mostly at that when you move your code from one version of visual studio to another latest version.
In older version if you are using latest framework like 4.5
At initial stage Warning is !(Your Application Not Target the Exact Framework)
Then First you should target the Framework(Click on Project rather than Solution go to properties ->Application set your framework)
Then clean and rebuild. If not working then You should use a Window Form which not manipulate any data from DataBase or create a new folder, in that folder create a new Form then this from Run through the main function. I hope this will work

if you're using .net 2013, then go to project, then at the property windows go to references and add the references for the Microsoft ADO Data Control ,it will work now
