Reopen last closed tab in Visual Studio - visual-studio

Is there any way to reopen the last closed tab in Visual Studio? Similar to Ctrl+Shift+t in FireFox and Chrome?


This is not exactly an equivalent, but it can be helpful, so I would mention it.
There is a much simpler way actually, which is to navigate backward (Ctrl+-). Even if the file is closed, VS opens up the file in a new tab. Of course this is useful only in opening the closed tab immediately after you have closed the tab (ie, if you haven't navigated anywhere else much).
Update:

Also consider Alt+F, Alt+F.
(push Alt and hold it, now while holding, press F and then press F again).
This will open the Recent Files menu.
There, you can use arrow keys to select a file and open it by hitting Enter, or just use your mouse.


You can with the Visual studio Power Commands using Ctrl + Shift + Z


If you're using VS 2008, PowerCommands offers a "Undo Close" pane, featuring your recently closed documents, or like David said, check the File menu. PowerCommands doesn't limit the number of files it shows, though.


I don't know of way to open the last closed tab, but you can open your most recent file through your File Menu and the top one should be your most recently closed tab.

You can actually do this (at least in Visual Studio 2019) by pressing Ctrl+T,R which opens a little window which shows the last opened windows.

As NotAPro pointed out, the combination I mentioned seems to have changed to Ctrl+1,Ctrl+R


In Visual Studio Code 2020 you can use Shift+Ctrl+T, which is associated with Reopen Closed Editor. This should do what you're expecting.


Once you use VS 2022 V.17.3 it is pretty simple:
CTRL+K, CTRL+Z

I just can't get the search box to show up on my VS studio 2010?

I mean what the hell...I've been using this for 7-8 years and now for the first time I accidentally dragged the search box "to hell" (obviously...) so when I click on "find files" or just Ctrl + F it doesn't show me the search box? Yes, restart of VS didn't fix it.
I tried from the top menu too...it tries to show up obviously seeing how the main window loses focus but i just can't see it?

Had the same problem after a clean install of (yes, its 2020 AD) VS Studio 2015.
"Window->Window Layout Reset" did it for me.

Visual studio reopen editor after debugging

I started debugging (some C# MVC application) and a lot of windows pop-up. So I closed all of them. But I probably change something.
Now when I have open some files in editor and press Debugging - it close them. After Stop debugging they are still closed. When I try to double-click on file in Solution explorer - nothing happen. Right click and Open - nothing. Only when right-click - Open with... and select another editor, it will open. Sometimes it ask that file is already open and if I want to close him. So it is probably open somewhere.
Any ideas how to fix it? I tried reset all setting, imported old environment, restarted Visual Studio and also computer and nothing helped.

You can try to Reset Window Layout from the main Window menu in normal and debug modes.

so finally I installed new VS 2015 and everything works as normal

Visual Studio: Shortcut to close window not working

I changed the shortcut to close a window to Ctrl+W and to close all windows to Ctrl+Shift+W. Close all windows works fine, but Ctrl+W selects the word currently under the cursor but does not close the window.
When I right-click a tab it say Ctrl+W is the shortcut to close it (And also Ctrl+S to save and Ctrl+Shift+W to close all). Why is only the close window shortcut not working?

In Visual Studio (VS 2015 in my case but it's similar down to VS 2010 at least) keyboard shortcuts may have a different meaning depending on the context in which they are executed.
Click Tools / Options / Environment / Keyboard to look up or define shortcuts (you already did that probably). What I called "context" is selected in the combobox labelled "Use new shortcut in:". Most likely you defined the shortcut in "Global" but you want it to work in "Text Editor". In the latter Ctrl+W selects the current word.
Redefine Ctrl+W for "Text Editor" and you should be fine.

I am using Visual Studio 2017 & Visual Studio 2019 and tried the answer from #TobiMcNamobi but it didn't work for me. After few such tries I got it work with below steps.
You should add it as Global shourtcut otherwise it will not work for Designer views.
Add CTRL+W as a Global shortcut for Window.CloseDocumentWindow
Remove the CTRL+W shortcut for Edit.SelectCurrentWord

In Visual Studio 2019 it is Ctrl-F4 by default to CloseDocumentWindow. The action is Window.CloseDocumentWindow. I know this is old but the accepted answer has you change the short-cut key instead. I would rather use the default option.

If you're ever unsure go to the path above and you will see the image above then you can click inside the box "Press shortcut key" at the bottom of the form and type the short cut key you're interested in and it will tell you if it is used and what it is currently used for.

In my case, I had to existing assignments that I had to remove. Thereafter, I could use the hotkey.

In my case, the tabs were not closing because I am using Vim extension. I had to add the following lines to Vim settings:
"vim.handleKeys": {
"<C-w>": false
}
Just press Ctrl + , or Command + , for Mac users, search for Vim and go into Edit in settings.json as the following picture shows:

For Visual Studio 2022, make sure you also remove Ctrl+W from selectCurrentWord command.

In my VS Pro 2019, on Tools / Options / Environment / Keyboard, the first line offers using a premade keyboard mapping scheme, with a drop-down option for VSCode keyborad mapping theme.
I picked it and it seems to have adopted the keyboard shortcuts I was used to from working on VSCode, Ctrl+W included.

For those using linux with VSCode v1.56.2,
File --> Preferences --> Keyboard Shortcuts.
Search for View:Close Editor and as mentioned above, remove any keybinding that has the keybinding you want.

Backspace doesn't work in Visual Studio

I keep getting a very annoying problem in Visual Studio. When I try to delete some text by pressing backspace it doesn't work. Why is this? What is going on? Sometimes I have to close and open Visual Studio to make this problem go away but I just tried that right now and it didn't work. Backspace works in Notepad in case you are wondering.

In Visual Studio go to:
Tools
Options
Environment
Keyboard
Find "Edit.DeleteBackwards" command.
In "Use new shortcut in:" dropdown select "Text Editor".
In "Press shortcut keys:" click backspace so it would show "Bkspce"
Click "OK".
Backspace should start working for you again.

This seems to happen to me when I open a solution and there are files already open. I used to close the files, then close and re-open the solution to fix it, but now I just hit Alt + Enter.

I solved this issue resetting keyboard mapping scheme.
Tools -> Options -> Environment -> Keyboard -> Reset.

A quick fix for me is to simply open any menu from the menu bar. Once the menu is closed the non-character keys start to work again.

Except for the above methods.
You should also check the shortcut key settings:
File -> Preferences -> Keyboard Shortcuts -> 'Then check the item: deleteLeft'.

I get this from time to time in VS2010 as well and simply just using the mouse to change tabs/files seems to always fix it now. Nothing more.

This method is working at 100%.
Go to "File-> Preferences -> Keyboard Shortcuts" and search for deleteLeft and add keybinding "Backspace".

Odd that this is still an issue even in VS 2019. Both the backspace and delete keys didn't work. Quick fix, I just ran the project and it seemed to give it the kick it needed.

All I did was exit visual studio and restart it.None of the above options worked for me.

In my case the problem was the "When" Condition in "File-> Preferences -> Keyboard Shortcuts".
I removed "textInputFocus && !editorReadonly" and it works now as expected.
I'm looking forward to the side effects ;).

Try resetting your Visual Studio Settings
Go to :
All Program > Visual Studio 20xx > Visual Studio Tools
Run Developer Command Prompt for VS20xx as Administrator and this command:
devenv.exe /resetsettings

A quick work-around for me is locking the pc (Windows+L) and logging in again.

You can reset keyboard mapping scheme like this
Options => Environment => Keyboard then select (Default) in the comboBox and click Reset button and then Ok button to confirm

This problem happened for me when I used a different version of resharper at home and then took that project to my employment. Backspace works for me now after I deleted the bin and obj and resharper directories.

I have this problem after I install Vim, uninstall Vim Backspace works fine.

When this issue has happened to me, I've found that hitting delete or backspace is unresponsive only within a portion of my code. This portion happened to be some code that I've pasted in from the internet somewhere.
To fix this issue, I cut out the recently pasted problematic code and then pasted it into a text editor like Notepad++. Then copying and pasting that same code out of the text editor and back into Visual Studio fixed the problem.

Using Visual Studio Community 2019 (16.4.3)
I just searched this issue because I could click in my document, type, et cetera, but I could not use backspace, delete, ctrl+z, or the arrow keys.
Opening the "File" menu, I noticed the Save option referred to a different file. I checked that file and found that all of the keys that seemed not to work were actually editing that other file.
Switching between the file in half-focus and the file I intended to edit worked and, luckily, undo was able to fix the file I unknowingly butchered.
If you wound up here, check your "File" menu to make sure the correct file is referenced, since the fix is quick and easy to try.

Just had this exact issue (along with 'Enter', 'Ctrl+X', 'Ctrl+C', 'Ctrl+V', 'Ctrl+Z' keyboard mappings seemingly doing nothing) in the latest VS preview version below:

The fix for me was to move to another tab (I had multiple open) use the backspace key which worked fine, then move back to the original tab with which it wasn't working, save the file (as it had outstanding changes) and then I found backspace and all other shortcuts then worked!
I can only think that VS got in a locked (to keyboard mappings) state for that particular tab.
A few notes on this:
I knew it wasn't a keyboard issue as I was able to use those
keys/mappings fine in other apps.
I found closing and reopening VS didn't work.
Also resetting the keyboard mappings (through Options menu as others have described) didn't work.
I had multiple tabs open.
Resharper was disabled.

I just had this happen in one instance of Visual Studio 2022, caused by the debug settings editor window being open in another instance of Visual Studio 2022 in the background where I couldn't see it.
Closing that window resolved it.

I've had this issue for a long time. I'm not sure what causes it, but Alt + Enter works.
The extensions that I'm running include AnkhSVN, MySQL Tools, and Productivity Power Tools.

Visual Studio shortcut for "quick fix"

Does Visual Studio 2010 have a shortcut for quick fix?
I'm tired of grabbing the mouse, hovering over this red line, waiting for the little clipboard icon to appear, clicking on the first menu item. It would be so much fast to just open that dialog with some keys and confirming the first (i.e. selected) item.

The feature is called the "Smart Tag".

They can usually be invoked via the keyboard using either:
Ctrl+. (on a standard QWERTY keyboard)
Alt+Shift+F10 (if you've not got Function Lock enabled)

If your cursor is on the item that is underlined, you can use Ctrl + . to pop up the intellisence/suggestion context menu.

Alt + Shift + F10 does the trick.

If you want to edit the shortcut of quick fix you can do the following:
Open Tools->Options->Keyboard and in the Show commands containing field enter EditorContextMenus.CodeWindow.QuickActionsForPosition and replace the old shortcut with the new one.
