Okay, I'll bite.
I've got really pleasant code/window colors set up in Xcode. Ordinarily, my selection color is very visible.
When I am doing a project search and iterating through the results, however, the results list stays in focus and the found text remains out of focus, using a different background color. This color is extremely hard to detect, especially when the text is embedded in a larger code block and the view is shifting around as it scrolls to the results.
Here's an example:
Left side is in focus (just normal selection), right side is out of focus (during project find)
Often it takes a few seconds to find where the heck the selected text is.
Unless I'm just missing it, Xcode seems to offer no way to change this particular selection color. Interestingly, it also doesn't seem to follow the selection color from the Appearance panel.
Does anyone know a way to change this color or force it to be more visible, short of changing my entire color scheme around?

You can manually edit the theme file, which might allow a different selection color. If I recall (not on my dev machine), personal themes are in ~/Library/Application Support/Xcode/(should be intuitive from here/can't remember)
You can edit them in Property List Editor, if I remember right. The Xcode preferences don't expose all of the options available in the theme file.

Using Oracle Form Builder 10.1.2.3.0, I have a List Item of type Combo Box with a Prompt and next to it in the same Block is a CheckBox.
When I disable these two items with
SET_ITEM_PROPERTY('block.item', ENABLED, PROPERTY_FALSE);
the CheckBox and its prompt go gray but the prompt portion of the List Item does not change. This makes the form and its developer look ridiculous.
Is this a bug?
To accomplish what I want I have to execute these when the List Item's enablement changes:
set_item_property('block.item', foreground_color, 'r150g150b150')
set_item_property('block.item', foreground_color, 'r70g70b70')
And these are just guesses because the color meter app is not perfect.
Half of the problem would "go away" if I could use a visual attribute but the form builder app complains about the "gray" color not being named.
Surely there is a better solution. Maybe playing with the LAF? But I have yet to figure out LAF customization.
I would not expect the prompt to change, but the edit area where text is entered will change. There is one exception. If running with colorScheme SWAN or BLAF the text edit are will always remain white unless you explicitly change the color. This is expected behavior.
If you are using SWAN or BLAF, which EBS does, by setting readOnlyBackground=true you can cause the edit area to go from white to a non-white color (the exact color will depend on the colorscheme in use). Because this parameter is not in the config by default it would need to be added manually and also added to the html template file.
I'm using the Visual Studio Color Theme Editor extension to help darken up VS2010, found a nice theme that I like however I've got one big problem with it.
On the Property sheet, at the bottom where it says the name of the property and a sort description this theme I'm using is impossible to read; Black on a dark grey background. Unfortunately, I don't know what this specific segment of the Property window is called to change it.
You can not change the text color with the extension.
To figure that out, copy FFFFFF, select all line in the theme editor configuration pane (with Shift), press Ctrl+V (yes, you can do that, pretty neat !) and hit apply : everything that can be themed will then appear white. The text however, will stay black.
You can hopefully change the background color : It's called ToolWindowBackground. It will affect all tool windows of course. There's no specific item for this window in particular.
When I do a multiple selection from, say, the find dialog (Alt-Enter), I sometimes find that many of the selected bits are off screen, but I'd like to check the context of all of them before I start doing a multiple edit.
Is there a way to, say, cycle through them in the view (without disrupting the selections)?
Probably the easiest way is to not do a "Find All", but instead highlight (or do a single Find) what you're looking for, then use ⌘D on OS X/CtrlD on Win/Lin to sequentially add the next matches. If you come to a match you don't want to select, just use ⌘K,⌘D (or CtrlK,CtrlD) to skip the current instance and go on to the next one. ⌘U (CtrlU) is "soft undo", it moves back to the previous selection in case you made a mistake.
Alternatively, I use a color scheme with a very bright selection color (it's bright blue surrounded by bright green) so that selected regions are very easy to identify. This way I can just glance at the minimap and see where selections are, and scroll through my file quickly to ensure everything looks good. If you find a selection you don't want, you can deselect it with Alt+middle mouse button on Win/Lin, or by ⌘Shift+click on OS X. You may need to set "drag_text": false in your Preferences for it to work, though (I'm not on my Mac at the moment to test).
I've found a working solution, but it's not ideal and only works if you're ok with losing the selections (eg: with multiple selections, hit Right Arrow - you've still got multiple cursors, but the selections are gone).
It goes like this:
Make sure there is no code folding - it appears to interfere with this sort of manipulation of multiple selections.
Use altEnter in the search dialogue to select all occurrences of your regex.
Scroll through the selections until you find one you don't want (MattDMo's Neon plugin is helpful here).
Use a cursor movement to lose the selections (multiple cursors remain).
Use Alt+Left Click on the undesired cursor.
Repeat 5. as required. Making another (multiple) selection can be helpful here to locate the other cursors (eg: Control/CommandShiftLeft Arrow)
If you remove a cursor by mistake, or need to add one, use Control/Command+Left Click
Is it possible to change the width of the text editor in VS2012 - I've got a fairly wide screen and use fairly small text so I end up with a lot wasted real-estate in the middle of my screen.
I don't want to turn off word wrap - I just want the wrap to start further right on the line. If that makes sense!?
You can set this with HTML in Visual Studio 2012 but there is no global setting and it's missing in quite a few languages.
You can just put another "dummy" window next to the one you are writing in, so the actual editor window will be smaller. You can put it on the left if you want to pan the text to the right, and to the right if you want to shorten the lines.
I actually found the answer elsewhere; VS doesn't appear to provide this functionality but Resharper does. Resharper -> Options -> Code Editing -> C# -> Formatting Style -> Line Breaks and Wrapping -> Right margin (columns)
I put mine to 200 which fixed the issue
I know that this is not what you are looking for, but I believe it solves the same problem. I too have a fairly large screen and try to make use of it as optimally as possible.
I hate tabbing between code or design tabs and try to avoid that as much as possible.
VS has a feature that permits the user to create Horizontal or Vertical Tab groups and ever since I have started using it, I have found it very helpful. These options are present in the context menu by right clicking the tab or in the VS Window Menu (Menus are seen only if the tab groups feature is not active).
I have created a screenshot with Vertical Tab Groups created as shown below. In this example, I have a overview of both the designer and the code view at the same time.
We can use tab groups whenever there is a dependency such as comparing code, redesigning a module, etc. I know it takes a little time to get used to this feature but try it out and see :)
I mean, it appears to offer control over this -- but (at least as per my personal, fairly exhaustive investigation) it's Potemkin UX:
... the "Invisibles" color field doesn't actually affect the invisibles (which is that a joke? Like it controls the color of something else which is actually invisible??); the color field that does will not do so without simultaneously lending the tint you ascribe to it to the entirety of the rest of the documents' unhighlighted text.
I'm patient and flexible enough to either deal a text editors' quirks and I am nerdy enough to hack through said quirks when my patience and flexibility are depleted -- I have a haunted museum of 1990s-era elisp snippets and X configuration dotfiles that speak to this -- but I find these dysfunctionally Klein-bottlesque options flummoxing. Can you help me?
It's working now. You can set a lighter color for Invisibles color for light theme.
In my Xcode 11, I can set Invisibles color from Preferences -> Fonts & Colors -> Source Editor. There are some configurable items.
The code looks perfect now.
