Google Code Jam 2008: Round 1A Question 3 - algorithm

At Google Code Jam 2008 round 1A, there is problem:
Calculate last three digits before the
decimal point for the number
(3+sqrt(5))^n
n can be big number up to 1000000.
For example: if n = 2 then (3+sqrt(5))^2 = 27.4164079... answer is 027.
For n = 3: (3+sqrt(5))^3 = 3935.73982... answer is 935.
One of the solution is to create matrix M 2x2 : [[0, 1], [-4, 6]] than calculate matrix P = M^n, Where calculation preformed by modulo 1000.
and the result is (6*P[0,0] + 28*P[0,1] - 1) mod 1000.
Who can explain me this solution?

I'll present a method to solve this problem without even understanding the solution.
Assuming that you are familiar with the fibonacci numbers:

And are also familiar with its closed form expression:
ghci> let calcFib i = round (((1 + sqrt 5) / 2) ^ i / sqrt 5)

And you notice the similarity of ((1 + sqrt 5) / 2)n and (3 + sqrt 5)n.
From here one can guess that there is probably a series similar to fibonacci to calculate this.
But what series? So you calculate the first few items:

Guessing that the formula is of the form:
thingn = a*thingn-1 + b*thingn-2
We have:
27 = a*5 + b*1
143 = a*27 + b*5
We solve the linear equations set and get:
thingn = 4*thingn-1 + 7*thingn-2 (a = 4, b = 7)
We check:

Then we find out that sadly this does not compute our function. But then we get cheered by the fact that it gets the right-most digit right. Not understanding why, but encouraged by this fact, we try to something similar. To find the parameters for a modified formula:
thingn = a*thingn-1 + b*thingn-2 + c
We then arrive at:
thingn = 6*thingn-1 - 4*thingn-2 + 1
We check it:

Just to give an answer to a very old question:
Thanks to yairchu i've got the idea to reread the prove of Binet's formula on the wikipedia page. It's there not really that clear, but we can work with it.
We see on the wikipedia page there is a closed form with 'computation by rounding': Fn = ⌊φ/√5⌋n.
If we could replace the φ/√5 with 3 + √5 (call the latter x). We could compute the floor of xn fairly easily, especially mod 1000, by finding the nth term in our freshly constructed sequence (this is the analogon of F (later we will call this analogon U)).
What sequence are we looking for? Well, we'll try following the prove for the Binet's formula. We need a quadratic equation with x as a root. Let's say x2 = 6 x-4 this one has roots x and y := 3 - √5. The handy part is now:
Define Un (for every a and b) such:
Un = a xn + b yn
by definition of x and y you can see that
Un = 6 Un-1 - 4 Un-2
Now we can choose a and b freely. We need Un to be integers so I propose choosing a=b=1. Now is U0 = 2, U1 = 6, U2 = 28...
We still need to get our 'computation by rounding'. You can see that yn < 1 for every n (because y ≅ 0.76 < 1) so Un = xn + yn = ⌈xn⌉.
If we can compute Un we can find ⌊xn⌋, just subtract 1.
We could compute Un by it's recursive formula but that would require O(n) computation time. We can do better!
For computing such a recursive formula we can use matrices:
⌈ 0 1⌉ ⌈ U(n-1) ⌉ ⌈ U(n) ⌉
⌊-4 6⌋ ⌊ U(n) ⌋ = ⌊U(n+1)⌋
Call this matrix M. Now does M*(U(1), U(2)) compute (U(2), U(3)).
Now we can compute P = Mn-1 (notice that I use one less than n, you can see that this is right if you test the small cases: n=0, n=1, n=2) P*(6,28) gives us now the nth and (n+1)th term of our sequence so:
(P*(6,28))0 - 1 = ⌊xn⌋
Now we can take everything mod 1000 (this is simplifying the calculations (a lot)) and we get the desired result in computation time O(log(n)) (or even better with the computational wonders of powers of matrices (over a cyclic finite field)). This explains the very weird looking solution, I guess.

I don't know how to explain that, but the auther of the problem have compose this analysis.

Haskell Performance Optimization

I am writing code to find nth Ramanujan-Hardy number. Ramanujan-Hardy number is defined as
n = a^3 + b^3 = c^3 + d^3
means n can be expressed as sum of two cubes.
I wrote the following code in haskell:

In my opinion, time complexity to check if a number is Ramanujan number is O(n^(4/3)).
On running this code in ghci, it is taking time even to find 2nd Ramanujan number.
What are possible ways to optimize this code?
First a small clarification of what we're looking for. A Ramanujan-Hardy number is one which may be written two different ways as a sum of two cubes, i.e. a^3+b^3 = c^3 + d^3 where a < b and a < c < d.
An obvious idea is to generate all of the cube-sums in sorted order and then look for adjacent sums which are the same.
Here's a start - a function which generates all of the cube sums with a given first cube:
cubes a = [ (a^3+b^3, a, b) | b <- [a+1..] ]
All of the possible cube sums in order is just:
allcubes = sort $ concat [ cubes 1, cubes 2, cubes 3, ... ]
but of course this won't work since concat and sort don't work
on infinite lists.
However, since cubes a is an increasing sequence we can sort all of
the sequences together by merging them:
allcubes = cubes 1 `merge` cubes 2 `merge` cubes 3 `merge` ...
Here we are taking advantage of Haskell's lazy evaluation. The definition
of merge is just:
merge [] bs = bs
merge as [] = as
merge as#(a:at) bs#(b:bt)
= case compare a b of
LT -> a : merge at bs
EQ -> a : b : merge at bt
GT -> b : merge as bt
We still have a problem since we don't know where to stop. We can solve that
by having cubes a initiate cubes (a+1) at the appropriate time, i.e.
cubes a = ...an initial part... ++ (...the rest... `merge` cubes (a+1) )
The definition is accomplished using span:
cubes a = first ++ (rest `merge` cubes (a+1))
where
s = (a+1)^3 + (a+2)^3
(first, rest) = span (\(x,_,_) -> x < s) [ (a^3+b^3,a,b) | b <- [a+1..]]
So now cubes 1 is the infinite series of all the possible sums a^3 + b^3 where a < b in sorted order.
To find the Ramanujan-Hardy numbers, we just group adjacent elements of the list together which have the same first component:

The groups we are interested in are those whose length is > 1:

Your is_ram function checks for a Ramanujan number by trying all values for a,b,c,d up to the cuberoot, and then looping over all n.
An alternative approach would be to simply loop over values for a and b up to some limit and increment an array at index a^3+b^3 by 1 for each choice.
The Ramanujan numbers can then be found by iterating over non-zero values in this array and returning places where the array content is >=2 (meaning that at least 2 ways have been found of computing that result).
I believe this would be O(n^(2/3)) compared to your method that is O(n.n^(4/3)).

Number of ways to reach N from 0 using only 2 or 3?

I am solving this problem where we need to reach from X=0 to X=N.We can only take a step of 2 or 3 at a time.
For each step of 2 we have a probability of 0.2 and for each step of 3 we have a probability of 0.8.How can we find the total probability to reach N.
e.g. for reaching 5,
2+3 with probability =0.2 * 0.8=0.16
3+2 with probability =0.8 * 0.2=0.16 total = 0.32.
My initial thoughts:
Number of ways can be found out by simple Fibonacci sequence.
f(n)=f(n-3)+f(n-2);
But how do we remember the numbers so that we can multiply them to find the probability?
This can be solved using Dynamic programming.
Lets call the function F(N) = probability to reach 0 using only 2 and 3 when the starting number is N
F(N) = 0.2*F(N-2) + 0.3*F(N-3)
Base case:
F(0) = 1 and F(k)= 0 where k< 0
So the DP code would be somthing like that:

Some clarifications about this solution: I assume the only allowed operation for generating the number from 2s and 3s is addition (your definition would allow substraction aswell) and the input-numbers are always valid (2 <= input). Definition: a unique row of numbers means: no other row with the same number of 3s and 2s in another order is in scope.
We can reduce the problem into multiple smaller problems:
Problem A: finding all sequences of numbers that can sum up to the given number. (Unique rows of numbers only)
Start by finding the minimum-number of 3s required to build the given number, which is simply input % 2. The maximum-number of 3s that can be used to build the input can be calculated this way:

Now all sequences of numbers that sum up to input must hold between input % 2 and max_3 3s. The 2s can be easily calculated from a given number of 3s.
Problem B: calculating the probability for a given list and it's permutations to be the result
For each unique row of numbers, we can easily derive all permutations. Since these consist of the same number, they have the same likeliness to appear and produce the same sum. The likeliness can be calculated easily from the row: 0.8 ^ number_of_3s * 0.2 ^ number_of_2s. Next step would be to calculate the number of different permuatations. Calculating all distinct sets with a specific number of 2s and 3s can be done this way: Calculate all possible distributions of 2s in the set: (number_of_2s + number_of_3s)! / (number_of_3s! * numer_of_2s!). Basically just the number of possible distinct permutations.
Now from theory to praxis
Since the math is given, the rest is pretty straight forward:

You can solve this in closed form by finding the exponential solutions to the linear recurrent relation.
c^3 = 0.2 c + 0.8
c = 1, (-5 +- sqrt(55)i)/10
Although this was cubic, c=1 will always be a solution in this type of problem since there is a constant nonzero solution.
Because the roots are distinct, all solutions are of the form a1(1)^n + a2((-5+sqrt(55)i) / 10)^n + a3((-5-sqrt(55)i)/10)^n. You can solve for a1, a2, and a3 using the initial conditions:

a2=(99-sqrt(55)i)/308
a3=(99+sqrt(55)i)/308
This gives you a nonrecursive formula for p(n):

One nice property of the non-recursive formula is that you can read off the asymptotic value of 5/14, but that's also clear because the average value of a jump is 2(1/5)+ 3(4/5) = 14/5, and you almost surely hit a set with density 1/(14/5) of the integers. You can use the magnitudes of the other roots, 2/sqrt(5)~0.894, to see how rapidly the probabilities approach the asymptotics.

Instead of using the (terribly inefficient) recursive algorithm, start from the start and calculate in how many ways you can reach subsequent steps, i.e. using 'dynamic programming'. This way, you can easily calculate the probabilities and also have a complexity of only O(n) to calculate everything up to step n.
For each step, memorize the possible ways of reaching that step, if any (no matter how), and the probability of reaching that step. For the zeroth step (the start) this is (1, 1.0).

Now, for each consecutive step n, get the previously computed possible ways poss and probability prob to reach steps n-2 and n-3 (or (0, 0.0) in case of n < 2 or n < 3 respectively), add those to the combined possibilities and probability to reach that new step, and add them to the list.

Note that this will get you both the number of possible ways of reaching a certain step (e.g. "first 2, then 3" or "first 3, then 2" for 5), and the probability to reach that step in one go. Of course, if you need only the probability, you can just use single numbers instead of tuples.

Determining Floating Point Square Root

How do I determine the square root of a floating point number? Is the Newton-Raphson method a good way? I have no hardware square root either. I also have no hardware divide (but I have implemented floating point divide).
If possible, I would prefer to reduce the number of divides as much as possible since they are so expensive.
Also, what should be the initial guess to reduce the total number of iterations???

When you use Newton-Raphson to compute a square-root, you actually want to use the iteration to find the reciprocal square root (after which you can simply multiply by the input--with some care for rounding--to produce the square root).
More precisely: we use the function f(x) = x^-2 - n. Clearly, if f(x) = 0, then x = 1/sqrt(n). This gives rise to the newton iteration:
x_(i+1) = x_i - f(x_i)/f'(x_i)
= x_i - (x_i^-2 - n)/(-2x_i^-3)
= x_i + (x_i - nx_i^3)/2
= x_i*(3/2 - 1/2 nx_i^2)
Note that (unlike the iteration for the square root), this iteration for the reciprocal square root involves no divisions, so it is generally much more efficient.
I mentioned in your question on divide that you should look at existing soft-float libraries, rather than re-inventing the wheel. That advice applies here as well. This function has already been implemented in existing soft-float libraries.
Edit: the questioner seems to still be confused, so let's work an example: sqrt(612). 612 is 1.1953125 x 2^9 (or b1.0011001 x 2^9, if you prefer binary). Pull out the even portion of the exponent (9) to write the input as f * 2^(2m), where m is an integer and f is in the range [1,4). Then we will have:
sqrt(n) = sqrt(f * 2^2m) = sqrt(f)*2^m
applying this reduction to our example gives f = 1.1953125 * 2 = 2.390625 (b10.011001) and m = 4. Now do a newton-raphson iteration to find x = 1/sqrt(f), using a starting guess of 0.5 (as I noted in a comment, this guess converges for all f, but you can do significantly better using a linear approximation as an initial guess):

= 0.6005859...
x_2 = x_1*(3/2 - 1/2 * 2.390625 * x_1^2)

So even with a (relatively bad) initial guess, we get rapid convergence to the true value of 1/sqrt(f) = 0.6467616600226026.
Now we simply assemble the final result:
sqrt(f) = x_n * f = 1.5461646...
sqrt(n) = sqrt(f) * 2^m = 24.738633...
And check: sqrt(612) = 24.738633...
Obviously, if you want correct rounding, careful analysis needed to ensure that you carry sufficient precision at each stage of the computation. This requires careful bookkeeping, but it isn't rocket science. You simply keep careful error bounds and propagate them through the algorithm.
If you want to correct rounding without explicitly checking a residual, you need to compute sqrt(f) to a precision of 2p + 2 bits (where p is precision of the source and destination type). However, you can also take the strategy of computing sqrt(f) to a little more than p bits, square that value, and adjust the trailing bit by one if necessary (which is often cheaper).
sqrt is nice in that it is a unary function, which makes exhaustive testing for single-precision feasible on commodity hardware.
You can find the OS X soft-float sqrtf function on opensource.apple.com, which uses the algorithm described above (I wrote it, as it happens). It is licensed under the APSL, which may or not be suitable for your needs.
Probably (still) the fastest implementation for finding the inverse square root and the 10 lines of code that I adore the most.
It's based on Newton Approximation, but with a few quirks. There's even a great story around this.
Easiest to implement (you can even implement this in a calculator):

This is exactly equal to newton raphson:

Shifting algorithms:
Let us assume you have two numbers a and b such that least significant digit (equal to 1) is larger than b and b has only one bit equal to (eg. a=1000 and b=10). Let s(b) = log_2(b) (which is just the location of bit valued 1 in b).
Assume we already know the value of a^2. Now (a+b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2. a^2 is already known, 2ab: shift a by s(b)+1, b^2: shift b by s(b).
Algorithm:
Initialize a such that a has only one bit equal to one and a^2<= n < (2*a)^2.

Normalise your floating point number so the mantissa is in the range [1,4), use the above algorithm on it, and then divide the exponent by 2. No floating point divisions anywhere.
With the same CPU time budget you can probably do much better, but that seems like a good starting point.

Pseudo number generation

Following is text from Data structure and algorithm analysis by Mark Allen Wessis.
Following x(i+1) should be read as x subscript of i+1, and x(i) should be
read as x subscript i.
x(i + 1) = (a*x(i))mod m.
It is also common to return a random real number in the open interval
(0, 1) (0 and 1 are not possible values); this can be done by
dividing by m. From this, a random number in any closed interval [a,
b] can be computed by normalizing.
The problem with this routine is that the multiplication could
overflow; although this is not an error, it affects the result and
thus the pseudo-randomness. Schrage gave a procedure in which all of
the calculations can be done on a 32-bit machine without overflow. We
compute the quotient and remainder of m/a and define these as q and
r, respectively.
In our case for M=2,147,483,647 A =48,271, q = 127,773, r = 2,836, and r < q.

Normalizing means if you have X ∈ [0,1] and you need to get Y ∈ [a, b] you can compute
Y = a + X * (b - a)

a = 3, x = 5, m = 9
Then we have

So we have 15 = [ax/m]*m + 6

If you have a random number in the range [0,1], you can get a number in the range [2,5] (for example) by multiplying by 3 and adding 2.

Dynamic programming idiom for combinations

Consider the problem in which you have a value of N and you need to calculate how many ways you can sum up to N dollars using [1,2,5,10,20,50,100] Dollar bills.
Consider the classic DP solution:

It does not take into effect the order of the summed parts. For example, comb(4) will yield 5 results: [1,1,1,1],[2,1,1],[1,2,1],[1,1,2],[2,2] whereas there are actually 3 results ([2,1,1],[1,2,1],[1,1,2] are all the same).
What is the DP idiom for calculating this problem? (non-elegant solutions such as generating all possible solutions and removing duplicates are not welcome)

What we need to find is the coefficient of x^N in
(1 + x + x^2 + ...)(1+x^5 + x^10 + ...)(1+x^10 + x^20 + ...)...(1+x^100 + x^200 + ...)
(number of times 1 appears*1 + number of times 5 appears * 5 + ... )
Which is same as the reciprocal of
(1-x)(1-x^5)(1-x^10)(1-x^20)(1-x^50)(1-x^100).
You can now factorize each in terms of products of roots of unity, split the reciprocal in terms of Partial Fractions (which is a one time step) and find the coefficient of x^N in each (which will be of the form Polynomial/(x-w)) and add them up.
You could do some DP in calculating the roots of unity.
You should not go from begining each time, but at max from were you came from at each depth.
That mean that you have to pass two parameters, start and remaining total.

Terminology: What you are looking for is the "integer partitions"
into prescibed parts (you should replace "combinations" in the title).
