I work in an enterprise designing, creating and maintening custom applications on the base of ESRI ArcGIS. Some customers use Direct Connect, to connect to databases stored on Oracle or MS SQLServer. I have a problem with a standalone application for several months now.
I have an application, written in Delphi. One of the first things I do, of course, is opening the workspace.
pWorkspaceFactory:= CoSdeWorkspaceFactory.Create as IWorkspaceFactory;
pWorkspaceFactory.OpenFromFile('D:\directconnect.sde', WndHandle, pWorkspace);
This works fine for all "normal" connects, in some cases of direct connect it works fine too. But it may happen that I get on a different database a stackoverflow when calling OpenFromFile. Raising the MaxStackSize in the project options of the delphi project made it work on some Direct Connect databases. But it doesn't work for all.
Does anybody know the correct way to handle Direct Connects in standalone applications, without ArcMap? Accessing the databases in ArcMap has never been a problem, I think ArcMap has a special handling for Direct Connects.

Thank you for your comment. I can't post more details about the exception at the moment, because I can't reproduce it on my testdatabases. It's only out in the wild the exception occurs. But I can say that it happens in a (for me) closed ESRI-Dll, i cannot see the call stack of the dlls methods (OpenFromFile is an ESRI-Method in an ESRI-Dll). I would like to post such things, but I can't.
Could it have something to do with the DC library you are using? There are separate libraries for each version of ArcGIS and each flavor of database.

I am exploring how best to access a PostgreSQL/PostGIS DB from NodeJS. All I need is simple SQL SELECT queries. Nothing more complex than:

FROM portal.catalog AS cat
WHERE ST_Intersects(st_geogfromtext('SRID=4326;POLYGON((20 50 ,19 50,19 49,20 50 ))'), cat.gpoly)
LIMIT 5000;
This will be on a windows7 or windows2008 server, running PostgreSQL 9.2/PostGIS 2.0, The traffic will be pretty light (only a few requests per minute).

I've used node-postgres in the past, but recently opted for any-db, which has support for PostgreSQL.
Both have worked well, although I prefer any-db, particularly with respect to pooling and transactions. I believe any-db deserves more recognition.
Any-db is layered on top of BrianC's node-postgres.
But I just got the https://github.com/brianc/node-postgres-pure working, and it is a pleasure.
EntitySpaces is the way to go, not defunct at all.

Hi i am developing a metro style application where i will be connecting to web services and get the data from the web service and i will be binding it to the UI.
But my requirement is in my application i need to create tables and also provide relation between the tables and dump the data in to that local database and use that data in calling the other methods present in my service application (calling one more method in services by passing something as an input to that).
Can you please explain me the following :-
What is Database which is supported for metro style apps?
How can i create a database and create tables and dump the the data which i got as the response from my service application?
I am new to Metro style application development please help me out .

First of all WinRT has very poor db support. Most of this kind of things are done by web services, OData etc
BUT I`m almost 100% sure that you can use SQLite. On codeplex there are connectors from Win8 Metro app to SQLite DB so check this topic. I also saw somewhere on MS page that SQLite is support in some way. Check it
What Fixus said is correct. Personally , since my app doesnt have a large amount of data to store locally (it goes against the Metro guidelines to store large amounts of data) I serialize the objects instead to local storage. When needed, and if internet is available, the services will be called and the local data updated.
If you choose to use SQLlite make sure you use the real deal and not a third party db, as the DB library must be approved by Microsoft if you want to get the app accepted to the windows store. I'm not even sure that SQLite is yet approved, but by the looks of it they will be.

We recommend using SQLite database with LinqConnect - Devart's LINQ to SQL compatible solution which supports SQLite engine (provided by http://code.google.com/p/csharp-sqlite/). You can employ LINQ and ADO.NET interfaces with our product. If you're building some application that has to keep working without any network connection, and needs to synchronize at some point in time, it is necessary to keep a local database.

I'm writing a C# Applications Solution v11.2 using eXpressApp Framework from DevExpress and the first thing I would like to do is make the 2 apps (web & win) connect to an Oracle Database without using the Oracle Client.
In my other projects I have used DevArt's dotConnect tool, which is great by the way (works without needing any Oracle Client installed).
I wonder if someone has tried this, 'cuz I just can't get it work. From what I read from the forums, I think that eXpress Framework doesn't recognize dotConnect's OracleConnection, or that I have to write my own XPO provider.. ?!

One of the approaches to accomplishing this task is to create a custom XPO connection provider. This class will be a descendant of one of the standard connection providers listed in the Database Systems Supported by XPO help topic. I believe the following KB article should helps.
I'm using delphi at the moment and have a program that connects to another program (a server) which has the mysql database on it and sends the data back to the client. I have a web server that has the server program and the database but my question is can I just go straight from the client program I have made (windows and future mac) to the mysql database on the web server? Or do I really need the server program? If so, what do I need to do to connect my client program to the MySQL database over the internet?
You should be able to access the mysql database directly as long as you've created a user/pw combo for the database that allows remote access (Security discussion aside). You'll then want to search for a compatible mysql library that would ease the communication between your program and mysql. At the far technical end you might have to read/write directly to the mysql socket but that's possible as well.
Depends on whether your client programs will continue to be native applications or whether you plan to migrate to browser based clients.
If they're native applications you can obtain library components for the languages they're written in which will be able to communicate directly with the MySQL database. There are plenty of options for Delphi; I'm not familiar with what options might be available for native Mac development (but, of course, Embarcadero is in the process of rolling out a Delphi that can generate Mac applications).
If, however, you're planning on making your clients browser-based, ajax solutions want to talk to a web server rather than a database server. In that case, you will need to maintain your middleware. For a discussion of whether it's possible or desirable to have a browser based application communicate directly with a database server see this question.
I would use SOAP/XML for this, and leave the SQL out of the client entirely.
This is a typical use case where REST (for example using JSON encoded database records) can be helpful. It is easy to implement a Delphi client using lkJSON or SuperObject, to put the database records from the HTTP response into a TClientDataSet.

So I've started using MvcMiniProfiler on our websites and quite like it. We have a Windows Application component/framework that is leveraged by the website and I was wondering if it was possible to use the profiler on that. I'm assuming not, but maybe there is a subcomponent of the code that could be used? I see that there is a way to configure where the results are stored (i.e. Sql Server) so maybe it is close to possible?
We have the following flow:
Website submits job to 'broker' then returns a 'come back later' page.
Broker runs and eventually data in the websites database gets updated by the broker.
Website displays the results.
I'd be great if there was a way I could get the entire workflow profiled. If there is no way/no intentions from the developers to make MvcMiniProfiler available to Windows applications, any recommendations for similar styled profilers?
You could get this working by using SqlServerStorage, there is very little in the code base that heavily depends on ASP.NET, in fact the SQL interceptor is generalized and so it the stack used to capture the traces.
I imagine that a few changes internally need to be made, eg: use Thread.SetData as opposed to HttpContext but they are pretty superficial.
The way you would get this going is by passing the "profiling identity" into the App and then continuing tracking there. Eventually when the user hits the site after it happens, it would show up as little "chiclets" on the left side.
A patch is totally welcome here but it is not something it does in its current version.
