All the links on the Microsoft site now redirect to the 2008 edition. The problem is the new version won't link with C libraries built with the 2005 edition.
this post says something about it

If you have an MSDN Licence they are all available:

I have a software application called appTranslator that I have used for many years to manage language translations. It comes with a appTranslatorTESetup (Translator Edition) that i give our translators.
Today I supplied the download link to a user and he was not able to install it. The software was compiled in 2007 so I am assuming it was using the Visual C++ Redistributable 2005.
I looked at the official Microsoft page here. I can see:
Visual Studio 2015, 2017 and 2019
Visual Studio 2013
Visual Studio 2012
Visual Studio 2010
Visual Studio 2008 SP1
Concerning version 2008 it states:
Visual Studio 2008 reached end of support on April 10, 2018. To aid the discovery of the latest downloads, the links are retained currently, but may be removed in the future.
After another search I came up with:
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update
Is this considered the latest official available edition?
I can confirm that the link I provided is the latest 2005 redist download.
And when my user installed it they were able to run appTranslatorTE.
It may be worth keeping a copy of these redist downloads for legacy app support.
As of 16-04-2022 the link is valid:
I do have some VS2005 Redist downloads on my DropBox folder in some languages:
Not sure of the est way to make these available for all as an alternative download.
I have a Resharper 9x license and it is only compatible up to MS VS Community 2015 edition. I tried to download the 2015 version from Microsoft but their website stubbornly wants me to have 2017, only. Can someone please provide me a url to the 2015 edition? Or, explain how to navigate Microsoft's site to obtain the 2015 edition?
Update on solution
1) vs_community.exe is the download filename for any version, 2015, 2017, etc. You will not know which version it is until you click the .exe. You will then see the version in the title of the installer.
2) There is a url trick to get the version that you want.
https://www.visualstudio.com/thank-you-downloading-visual-studio/?sku=Community&rel=15
...change the rel=15 to rel=17 etc
Or use the links provided in the answer below
You can use these links to download Visual Studio 2015
Community Edition:

And for anyone in the future who might be looking for the other editions here are the links for them as well:

The "official" way to get the vs2015 is to go to https://my.visualstudio.com/ ; join the " Visual Studio Dev Essentials" and then search the relevant file to download https://my.visualstudio.com/Downloads?q=Visual%20Studio%202015%20with%20Update%203
Free trial or open source version for the following softwares?
Visual Studio 2010
Sharepoint 2010
SQL Server 2008
VS & SQL Server have express editions.
Visual Studio 2010 has many "Express" versions, for different languages - Visual C# Express 2010, Visual Basic Express 2010, and others.
SharePoint 2010 - I don't believe there is a free version of this, but if you have MSDN or TechNet subscription, you get a development-time-only version.
SQL Server has an express edition as well. I'd recommend SQL Server 2008 R2, however - may as well use the latest unless you have a reason not to.
you can get visual studio 2010 akong with key from:
http://daffainfos.blogspot.in/2011/11/free-download-microsoft-visual-studio.html
Try to download free trial of Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 in this site: http://download.cnet.com/Microsoft-Visual-Studio-2010-Professional/3000-2212_4-10618634.html.
May be not serious question/stupid question but I tried searching in internet for Visual Studio 2005 software (I mean free download :) ) but couldn't find a place where I can get it.
Do you guys know any site from where I can download the software. If yes, can you please share the link with me.
You can get all Microsoft Express tools from here
http://www.microsoft.com/express/Downloads/
2005 is no longer on the main page (if available at all), but seriously consider 2010 or 2008 editions.
The free versions of visual studio can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/express/
if you're looking for Visual studio Web Developer Express 2005, as opposed to C#, Cnet's got it here:

Now only if they had an edition that works with Windows 7...
I'm looking to upgrade from Visual Studio 2008 Pro to Visual Studio 2010 Pro without MSDN. On the MSDN US site there's pricing for Upgrade from Standard for $299.
On the UK MSDN site however, the only options are to buy with MSDN for £484.99. Obviously a big difference in price there!
I can't find any info as to what qualifies for the Upgrade from Standard - anyone know about this? Or whether it's available in the UK?
thanks
Richard
Not really a programming question... (but somehow it is.. it's VS after all :P)
But: Have you considered calling the microsoft support or sending them an email? I bet they can give you the sophisticated info on that matter.
The Upgrade from Standard is for
*Special upgrade for Visual Studio 2005/2008 Standard Edition customers. Does not include MSDN.
If you want more info go to
http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/en-us/buy
and just above the BUY NOW button on the left there will be a link to Chat with a Representative. They should be able to tell you if you can upgrade from 2008 Pro to 2010 Pro.
I'm also not a MSDN member. As the owner of Visual Studio 2008 Standard Edition, I was able to purchase a Visual Studio 2010 Professional license for $299.
I'm assuming your confusion is coming from the fact that you own VS 2008 Pro and not VS 2008 Standard. I would think that you could take advantage of the same $299 offer, but as someone else said, I'd check with Microsoft sales first.
I believe the upgrade is from VS 2010 Standard to VS 2010 Pro - not from earlier editions.
