I struggle to have gems correctly loading in a Snow Leopard environment. I installed ruby and rubygems in '/usr/local' (from http://hivelogic.com/articles/compiling-ruby-rubygems-and-rails-on-snow-leopard/ instructions), I installed some gems with 'gem install gem-name'.
I correctly see the gem list:
$ gem list
*** LOCAL GEMS ***
chrisjpowers-iterm_window (0.3.2)
gemcutter (0.3.0)
I can see the gems correctly installed:
$ ls /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/
chrisjpowers-iterm_window-0.3.2
gemcutter-0.3.0
And the gem path correctly defined:
$ gem env path
/usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8
And I defined various paths in my bash profile:
$ cat ~/.bash_profile
export PATH="/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/mysql/bin:$PATH"
export GEM_HOME="/usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8"
export GEM_PATH="/usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8"
export RUBY_LIB="/usr/local/lib/ruby:/usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby"
However when I run the following script
#!/usr/local/bin/ruby
require 'rubygems'
require 'chrisjpowers-iterm_window'
I get the following error
/usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `gem_original_require': no such file to load -- chrisjpowers-iterm_window (LoadError)

I have no idea how to fix it, any help would be greatly appreciated :)
You're requiring the wrong lib name. The gem is named chrisjpowers-iterm_window because of GitHub namespacing, but the library is named iterm_window:
require 'rubygems'
require 'iterm_window'
The lib path differs from the gem path. The gem path is where the gems are installed, but the lib path contains the lib directory of every installed gem after rubygems is loaded. You should see an iterm_window.rb inside the lib directory of that gem.

I am trying to include the ruby-mysql gem in my ruby script. I have installed the gem using bundler but when I run bundle exec ./mysql_connector, I receive the error ./mysql_connector:4:in ``require': cannot load such file -- ruby-mysql (LoadError). What I did
Installed rails in my home directory.
I do not have root access to the server so I have installed rails in my local directory by following the instructions here:

Created a directory for my application.
My application resides in my home directory in a folder called connector. It has a Gemfile that looks like this:

Call bundle install.
Using ruby-mysql 2.9.14
Using bundler 1.11.2
Bundle complete! 1 Gemfile dependency, 2 gems now installed.
Bundled gems are installed into ./vendor/bundle.
Add dependencies to my script. My script is in connector/mysql_connector and it reads:
#!/home/dcox/bin/ruby
require 'rubygems'
require 'bundler/setup'
require 'ruby-mysql'
Make script executable. I saw that you need to run bundle exec using an executable file, so I followed the instructions here to make my script executable: http://commandercoriander.net/blog/2013/02/16/making-a-ruby-script-executable/
Run the script. I execute using bundle exec mysql_connector and see:
/home/dcox/bin/mysql_connector:4:in `require': cannot load such file -- ruby-mysql (LoadError)

Is it the $LOAD_PATH? After searching around for answers, I discovered a lot of SO answers as well as a blog post (https://codedecoder.wordpress.com/2013/09/23/require-and-load-in-ruby-loaderror-cannot-load-such-file/) that seem to suggest the problem is that the gem is not installed in a directory on the $LOAD_PATH. Here is what I see when I run $LOAD_PATH from IRB:
irb(main):002:0> $LOAD_PATH
=> ["/home/dcox/lib/ruby/site_ruby/2.1.0",
"/home/dcox/lib/ruby/site_ruby/2.1.0/x86_64-linux",

Next I checked to see the location of ruby-mysql:

/data/home/dcox/connector/vendor/bundle/ruby/2.1.0/gems/ruby-mysql-2.9.14
Obviously my connector/vendor/bundle path is not on the $LOAD_PATH. I could add it, but I have a feeling I am missing something simple here because bundler is supposed to work as long as you follow the instructions, right?

If you just want to require this specific gem, require 'mysql' should work (e.g., https://github.com/tmtm/ruby-mysql/blob/master/test/test_mysql.rb#L10).
Your file should call Bundler.setup http://bundler.io/bundler_setup.html
Better yet, if you instead call Bundler.require(:default) it will setup and require all the gems in your Gemfile for you.
I need to reference a local gem from a plain ruby script, without installing the gem. On the trail of How to refer a local gem in ruby?, i tried creating a Gemfile with the following setup:

custom_gem
another_custom_gem

gem dependency, :path => File.expand_path("../../#{dependency}", __FILE__)
end
and the script looks like this:
require 'custom_gem'
CustomGem::Do.something
When I execute this with:
bundle exec ruby script.rb
I get:
script.rb:1:in `require': cannot load such file -- custom_gem (LoadError) from script.rb:1:in `<main>'
If I leave out the require 'custom_gem' , I get:
script.rb:3:in `<main>': uninitialized constant CustomGem (NameError)
I even tried without bundler, and just writing gem ... :path =>̣ ... in the script itself, but without results. Is there any other way of referencing custom gems from ruby scripts, without installing the gems locally?
Make sure that your gem name as same as in Gemfile (e.g. custom_gem)
# Gemfile
source "https://rubygems.org"
gem "custom_gem", path: "/home/username/path/to/custom_gem"
Don't forget to actually install this gem using bundler
bundle install
After that, the script should be ready to use by bundle exec ruby script.rb
# script.rb
require 'custom_gem'
CustomGem::Do.something
Without using a Gemfile, you can install a local version of a gem by running bundle exec rake install in the gem's root directory and then you can reference it just like any other installed gem.
I'm sure this question is an easy one for Ruby users. However for me this is a issue I can't figure out by myself.
My goal is to use a script included in the Puppet archive (ext/nagios/check_puppet.rb) on a Ubuntu-10.4 system.
I try to launch the script:
$ sudo ./check_puppet.rb

Ok so there's something missing. I fount out I need some library called sys-proctable available at http://raa.ruby-lang.org/project/sys-proctable/

The gem is installed - but in Ruby 1.8 you need to have the line:
require 'rubygems'
To use rubygems. This changes the 'require' function so it will pull in rubygems when you ask it to.
So in the script:

Just add the require near the top and try again.

I'm trying to run the ruby gem "mongo3" (http://mongo3.com/)
I'm new to gem, but I would think that running "gem mongo3" should execute it, but I get this error:

So I did "gem which mongo3" and it said it is located at "/var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/mongo3-0.1.3/lib/mongo3.rb". I then ran "ruby /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/mongo3-0.1.3/lib/mongo3.rb" with the following result:

You don't need to do a gem mongo3 or ruby /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/mongo3-0.1.3/lib/mongo3.rb. Instead, just simply run mongo3.
Make sure to follow the usage instructions here to configure it or you'll get runtime errors.
Edit: If you don't install the gem using sudo, then you won't have proper write access to /usr/bin, meaning the mongo3 executable will not be in your path. You'll probably see a warning like this when installing:
WARNING: Installing to ~/.gem since /var/lib/gems/1.8 and
/usr/bin aren't both writable.
WARNING: You don't have /home/chris/.gem/ruby/1.8/bin in your PATH,
gem executables will not run.
You have two options: install the gem using sudo gem install mongo3 so it properly links to /usr/bin, or add /home/chris/.gem/ruby/1.8/bin to your path.
I've recently made the plunge to use RVM on Ubuntu.
Everything seems to have gone swimmingly...except for one thing. I'm in the process of developing a gem of mine that has a script placed within its own bin/ directory, all of the gemspec and things were generated by Jeweler.
The bin/mygem file contains the following code: -
#!/usr/bin/env ruby
begin
require 'mygem'
rescue LoadError
require 'rubygems'
require 'mygem'
end
app = MyGem::Application.new
app.run
That was working fine on the system version of Ruby.
Now...recently I've moved to RVM to manage my ruby versions a bit better, except now my gem doesn't appear to be working.
Firstly I do this: -
rvm 1.9.2
Then I do this: -
rvm 1.9.2 gem install mygem
Which installs fine, except...when I try to run the command for mygem
mygem
I just get the following exception: -

Using:
rvm 1.9.2 gem install mygem
is different than how I do my installs of gems inside RVM.
Try:
rvm 1.9.2
gem install mygem
You might also want to try doing gem pristine mygem which will tell Gems to remove the executable and recompile it for the current Ruby.
Another thought: Were you previously using Ruby 1.8+, and just changed to Ruby 1.9+? In Ruby 1.9 the require acts differently when loading modules that are relative to the calling code, say, in a child directory, because '.' was removed from the search path. require_relative was added to give us that capability.
Does doing export RUBYOPT=rubygems help?
