i'm going to install sql server 2008 on my computer, during preparing the installation there was an error like this:
a previous release of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 is installed on this computer. Upgrade Microsoft visual studio 2008 to sp1 before installing SQL Server 2008.
So i should upgrade my visual studio to sp1, but i don't know how to do it.
Please help, and Thanks.
Download the installer for SP1 and run it.
It is on this page.
Easier Method
There is a registry trick to overcome this error
Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DevDiv\VS\Servicing\9.0
rename 9.0 to 9.0old
then click “re run” ,it will solve the problem, but better to install
visual studio 2008 SP1

I just installed Visual Studio Community 2015 on my computer and tried to install ODTwithODAC121021 (32bit). Well, the Oracle universal installer tells me it cannot proceed because I have to install Visual Studio first. Can someone tell me how I can persuade the installer that I do indeed have Visual Studio? I'm running everything on Windows Server 2008 R2 in case that helps and I did not install an Oracle client, since I assume that it is included with the ODAC tools. Thank you very much in advance.
The current version of ODT doesn't support Visual Studio 2015.
They will support it after 1 month of VS 2015 RTM
It's now supported, as of 05 October :)

I have been trying to install Visual Studio 2010 Professional on my Windows 8.1 laptop and I am having problems. It seems to install and when I look at the applications list I see everything has installed except the Visual Studio 2010 (devenv.exe) application itself. Has anyone had this problem and found a solution for it? I have checked that .NET 2.0, 3.x and 4.x are all installed on the machine and active. The installer shows that it is installing the application but when it's completed the application is no where to be found.
I had the same thing happen to me, because I had SQL Server Data Tools installed, causing the shortcut to be named "sql server Data Tools". Try looking up the executable in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe and manually creating the shortcut on the start screen:
Be sure to install the updates as well:
Visual Studio 2010 SP1
Visual Studio 2010 GDR for Team Foundation Server
Visual Studio 2010 Compatibility Update for Windows 8 and Visual Studio 2012

I have to install SP1 Redistributable when using MSVC2008 pro?
I just would like to know because the project Im trying to compile requires it and I'm not sure if I should install it. I couldn't find answer on this question anywhere.
Visual Studio can come with slipstreamed Service Packs, however you need to find this out, if your installation media says it's Visual Studio 2008 with SP1 then you have good luck, otherwise, once installed, go to Help->About Microsoft Visual Studio and there you will see if you already have the SP1 already installed.
The problem:
In Visual Studio 2010 Professional I choose Server Explorer and right-click on Data Connections to choose "Add Connection". Then I get this error:
An unexpected error occurred in the
.NET Framework Data Provider for
Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5.
Please contact the provider vendor to
resolve this problem.
My enviroment:
Windows 7 SP1
Visual Studio 2010 Professional (trial version)
SQL Server 2008 R2 Express
I've tried
Installing Visual Web Developer Express (gives the same problem)
Reinstall of VS 2010 Professional
Reinstall of Sql Server 2008 R2 Express
Tools => Import and Export Setting => Reset all Settings
Run: Devenv.exe /ResetSkipPkgs

Maybe the registry is messed up in some way.
One post:
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/vstsstart/thread/b6f7fc36-5a34-4166-9e75-7ac39993182b
says that I should modify the registry at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\DataProviders
But I don't even have a folder named DataProviders in the 9.0 (or 10.0) folder. So maybe that's a problem.
Thanks for any help!
I started "add and remove programs" and removed everything that was named something about "Visual Studio". Then I reinstalled Visual Studio 2010 Professional. And now it works!
I had to do the same and use the VS 2010 uninstall utility to remove everything, then reinstall it all. This was caused by ODP for .Net which didn't install properly and I could not connect to data sources and basically meant I could not edit the dataset file!
I'm now working on RC Windows 7 and installed Visual Studio 2008 Professional edition. But I need to work with Java programs, and so I needed to work with Visual Studio 2005. I installed Visual Studio 2005 SP1 (VS80sp1-KB926747), but I have the following problem:
"The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch."
I previously had the same problem when I installed the Visual Studio SDK, February2007.
I had a similar problem when I was installing Visual Studio 2005 Professional on a Windows 7 machine.
But here is what I did to fix the problem:
Install Visual Studio 2005 Professional
During the install, a window popped up saying that VS2005 might not be compatible with Windows 7. Ignore this warning and continue.
Install Microsoft® Visual Studio® 2005 Team Suite Service Pack 1
VS80sp1-KB926601-X86-ENU.exe
Link: Microsoft® Visual Studio® 2005 Team Suite Service Pack 1
Install Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 Update for Windows Vista
VS80sp1-KB932232-X86-ENU.exe
Link: Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 Update for Windows Vista
Note:
If you try and install #3 before #2, you will end up with a message that says :
"The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch."
Hope it helps.
BBlake is right look at: https://superuser.com/questions/34190/visual-studio-2005-sp1-refuses-to-install-in-windows-7
It looks like you're trying to install SP1 (the patch) without having first installed Visual Studio 2005 (the application). The SP1 install is only for patching an existing installation.
