Redirect Output of Capistrano - ruby

I have a Capistrano deploy file (Capfile) that is rather large, contains a few namespaces and generally has a lot of information already in it. My ultimate goal is, using the Tinder gem, paste the output of the entire deployment into Campfire. I have Tinder setup properly already.
I looked into using the Capistrano capture method, but that only works for the first host. Additionally that would be a lot of work to go through and add something like:
output << capture 'foocommand'
Specifically, I am looking to capture the output of any deployment from that file into a variable (in addition to putting it to STDOUT so I can see it), then pass that output in the variable into a function called notify_campfire. Since the notify_campfire function is getting called at the end of a task (every task regardless of the namespace), it should have the task name available to it and the output (which is stored in that output variable). Any thoughts on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend not messing with the Capistrano logger, Instead use what unix gives you and use pipes:
cap deploy | my_logger.rb
Where your logger reads STDIN and STDOUT and both records, and pipes it back to the appropriate stream.
For an alternative, the Engineyard cap recipies have a logger – this might be a useful reference if you do need to edit the code, but I recommend not doing.

It's sort of a hackish means of solving your problem, but you could try running the deploy task in a Rake task and capturing the output using %x.
# ...in your Rakefile...
task :deploy_and_notify do
output = %x[ cap deploy ] # Run your deploy task here.
notify_campfire(output)
puts output # Echo the output.
end

Bamboo: Access script variable in subsequent maven task

I have seen many posts where people asking to access Bamboo variables in script but this is not about that.
I am defining a variable in Shell Script task, as below, and then I would like to access that variable in the subsequent maven task.
#!/bin/sh
currentBuildNumber=${bamboo.buildNumber}
toSubtract=1
newVersion=$(( currentBuildNumber - toSubtract ))
echo "Value of newVersion: ${newVersion}"
This one goes perfectly fine. However I have a subsequent maven 3 task where I try to access this variable by typing ${newVersion} I get below error

Basically, I would like to automate the version number of the built jar files just by using ${bamboo.buildNumber} and subtracting some number so that I won't have to enter the new version number every time I run a build.

Generally, the best solution I have found is to output the result to a file and use the Inject Variables task to read the variable into the build.
For example, in some builds I need a SUFFIX variable, so in a bash script I end up doing
SUFFIX=suffix=-beta-my-feature
echo $SUFFIX >> .suffix.cfg
Then I can use the Inject Variables Task to read that file

Make sure it is a Result variable and you should be able to get to it using ${bamboo.NAMESPACE.name} for the suffix one, it would be ${bamboo.VERSION.suffix}

Rake task selectivly ignoring new code

In a rake task I'm writing some puts statements show changes while others don't. For instance changing
puts model+" | "+id
into
puts model+" * "+id
doesn't change in the output of the script. However in some places changing
puts "Connecting to "+site
into
puts "Connecting to ----"+site
shows the changes that where made.
In the places where any changes to the line doesn't change the output, adding a new puts statement before or after don't show up when the task is run. Commenting out lines of code around the unchanging puts statements that do the actual work cause the script to not execute those lines, just as it should, but changing or adding puts statements there do not change the output of the script.
Removing all other tasks and emacs backup files from the lib/tasks folder doesn't help. I've been bitten before by having a backup copy of a task with the same namespace and task name running instead of the one I was working on.
This is being run with Ruby 2.4.3 on OpenBSD 6.3-stable on a fx-8350. I would post the whole script but the company I'm working for won't allow it.
How about
puts "#{model} +/*/whatever #{site}"
It shouldn't matter to what sounds like a filesystem update issue (reboot), but it's probably better form to put the variables in the string like that instead of + "" them.

Rake, how to create a task with multiple inputs and one output?

We have a rails app, and we use webpack which takes multiple javascript files and outputs one single javascript file. It takes a long time to run, and I'd like to create a rake task for this. But being new to rake I need some help.
I'd like to use rake's build system so that I can get automatic checking of the time stamps between the input and output .js files. So that if any of the input files are newer than the output file it will execute webpack. Otherwise if the none of the input files are newer than the output file, than the task does nothing.
In MSBuild, this is a cakewalk and lightning fast. But in Ruby I'm kind of lost.
I'm guessing it might consist of writing file tasks, and looping through and making the one output file depend on the inputs. Or should I use a rule, like this?

inputfiles = Dir["~/**/*.js"]
rule outputfile => inputfiles do
bin/webpack bla bla bla

You can use Rake::FileList to achieve this. Something like this:
file "foo.js" => Rake::FileList["**/*.js"] do
...
end
And, I'm not sure whether rake allows to use ~ in paths, I believe a full path is required. Or just use a "#{Dir.home}/foo.js" rule.
Then call it using:
rake ~/foo.js
And when you have multiple outputs:
task :build => Rake::FileList["config1.xml", "config2.xml"] do
# all that stuff is run only when the FileList above is changed
touch 'foo1.js'
touch 'foo2.js'
sh "compile foo3.js"
sh "do-anything-else foo4.js"
end

rake build

Run arbitrary ruby code in a chef cookbook

I have a simple chef cookbook and all it does is it sets the MOTD on a CentOS machine. It takes the content of the /tmp/mymotd.txt and turns it into the MOTD.
I also have a simple ruby script (a full-fledged ruby script) that simply reads the text from the web-server and puts in into the /tmp/mymotd.txt.
My questions are:
how do I run this ruby script from within the cookbook?
how do I pass some parameters to the script (e.g. the address of the web-server)

Ad 1.
You can use libraries directory in scripts to place there your ruby script and declare it in a module. Example:
# includes
module MODULE_NAME
# here some code using your script
# Example function
def example_function (text)
# some code
end
end
You can use then
include MODULE_NAME
in your recipe to import those functions and just use it like
example_function(something)
What's good - you can use there also Chef functions and resources.
IMPORTANT INFO: Just remember that Chef has 2 compilation phases. First will be all of Ruby code, second all of Chef resources. This means, that you have to remember priority of code. I won't write here more info about it, since you haven't asked for this, but if you want, you can find it here.
Ad 2.
You can do this in several ways, but it seems to me, that the best option for you would be to use environments. You can find more info in here. Basically, you can set up environment for script before it will run - this way you can define some variables you would use later.

How to prevent capistrano replacing newlines?

I want to run some shell scripts remotely as part of my capistrano setup. To test that functionality, I use this code:

cat <<TEST
something
TEST
SHELL
However, that is actually running /usr/bin/env cat <<TEST; something; TEST which is obviously not going to work. How do I tell capistrano to execute the heredoc as I have written it, without converting the newlines into semicolons?
I have Capistrano Version: 3.2.1 (Rake Version: 10.3.2) and do not know ruby particularly well, so there might be something obvious I missed.
I think it might work to just specify the arguments to cat as a second, er, argument to execute:
cat_args = <<SHELL
<<TEST
something
TEST
SHELL
execute "cat", cat_args
From the code #DavidGrayson posted, it looks like only the command (the first argument to execute) is sanitized.
I agree with David, though, that the simpler way might be to put the data in a file, which is what the SSHKit documentation suggests:
Upload a file from a stream
on hosts do |host|

The IO streaming is useful for uploading something rather than "cat"ing it, for example
on hosts do |host|
contents = StringIO.new('ALL ALL = (ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL')
upload! contents, '/etc/sudoers.d/yolo'
end
This spares one from having to figure out the correct escaping sequences for something like "echo(:cat, '...?...', '> /etc/sudoers.d/yolo')".
This seems like it would work perfectly for your use case.
The code responsible for this sanitization can be found in SSHKit::Command#sanitize_command!, which is called by that class's initialize method. You can see the source code here:

You might consider monkeypatching it to do nothing by adding something like this to the top of your Rakefile:

end
end
This is risky and could introduce problems in other places; for example there might be parts of Capistrano that assume that the command has no newlines.
You are probably better off making a shell script that contains the heredoc or putting the heredoc in a file somewhere.
Ok, so this is the solution I figured out myself, in case it's useful for someone else:

execute "echo #{str} | base64 -d | cat -"
As you can see, I'm base64 encoding my command, sending it through, then decoding it on the server side where it can be evaluated intact. This works, but it's a real ugly hack - I hope someone can come up with a better solution.
