Linux Device Driver - what's wrong with my device_read()? - linux-kernel

I've been writing a device dev/my_inc that's meant to take a positive integer N represented as an ASCII string, and store it internally. Any read from the device should produce the ASCII string representation of the integer (N+1).
However, when I cat /dev/my_inc, I only seem to be getting the first half of the myinc_value message buffer back in user space.
If myinc_value is 48, cat /dev/my_inc yields 4.
If myinc_value is 489324, cat /dev/my_inc yields 489.
However, bytes_read indicates the entire message was copied into user space. Here is the output from dmesg:

It may be that put_user() is defined as a macro so that the post increment operator in
if(put_user(c, buffer++))
is screwing up - though I don't see how it explains what you are seeing.
Anyway it would be more convenient and more efficient to use copy_to_user() to copy the whole msg.

The reason it only shows 1 byte is because you are incrementing the msg_ptr before setting it equal to c. It needs to be c = *msg_ptr++; or c = *msg_ptr; msg_ptr++; so that the increment happens after the assignment

Reading binary data

I am trying to read data from a binary file. One block of data is 76 bytes long (this varies with the number of the 2-byte "main data items" in the middle of the block). The first datum is 4 bytes, second is 4 bytes, and then there are a bunch of 2 byte main data items, and at the end are 2 more 2-byte pieces of data.
Based on this Delphi sample I've learned how to read the file with the code below:

But, what i would like to do is use a 76-byte wide buffer to read the entire block, and then pick the various datum out of that buffer. I put together the following code based on this question and i can read a whole block of data into the buffer.

But i can't figure out how to piece together subsets out of the bytes in the buffer. Is there a way to concatenate bytes? So i could read a block of data into a 76 byte buffer and then do something like this below?

How to replace read function for procfs entry that returned EOF and byte count read both?

I am working on updating our kernel drivers to work with linux kernel 4.4.0 on Ubuntu 16.0.4. The drivers last worked with linux kernel 3.9.2.
In one of the modules, we have a procfs entries created to read/write the on-board fan monitoring values. Fan monitoring is used to read/write the CPU or GPU temperature/modulation,etc. values.
The module is using the following api to create procfs entries:

This read function definitely assumes that the user has provided enough buffer space to store the temperature value. This is correctly handled in userspace program. Also, for every call to this function the read value is in totality and therefore there is no support/need for subsequent reads for same temperature value.
Plus, if I use "cat" program on this procfs entry from shell, the 'cat' program correctly displays the value. This is supported, I think, by the setting of EOF to true and returning read bytes count.
New linux kernels do not support this API anymore.
My question is:
How can I change this API to new procfs API structure keeping the functionality same as: every read should return the value, program 'cat' should also work fine and not go into infinite loop ?
The primary user interface for read files on Linux is read(2). Its pair in kernel space is .read function in struct file_operations.
Every other mechanism for read file in kernel space (read_proc, seq_file, etc.) is actually an (parametrized) implementation of .read function.
The only way for kernel to return EOF indicator to user space is returning 0 as number of bytes read.
Even read_proc implementation you have for 3.9 kernel actually implements eof flag as returning 0 on next invocation. And cat actually perfoms the second invocation of read for find that file is end.
(Moreover, cat performs more than 2 invocations of read: first with 1 as count, second with count equal to page size minus 1, and the last with remaining count.)
The simplest way for "one-shot" read implementation is using seq_file in single_open() mode.

Extract trailing int from string containing other characters

I have a problem in regards of extracting signed int from string in c++.
Assuming that i have a string of images1234, how can i extract the 1234 from the string without knowing the position of the last non numeric character in C++.
FYI, i have try stringstream as well as lexical_cast as suggested by others through the post but stringstream returns 0 while lexical_cast stopped working.

You can't. But the position is not hard to find:

Another possibility would be to put the string into a stringstream, then read the number from the stream (after imbuing the stream with a locale that classifies everything except digits as white space).

This technique is useful primarily when the stream contains a substantial amount of data, and you want all the data in that stream to be interpreted in the same way (e.g., only read numbers, regardless of what else it might contain).

Same .txt files, different sizes?

I have a program that reads from a .txt file
I use the cmd prompt to execute the program with the name of the text file to read from.
ex: program.exe myfile.txt
The problem is that sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
The original file is 130KB and doesn't work.
If I copy/paste the contents, the file is 65KB and works.
If I copy/paste the file and rename it, it's 130KB and doesn't work.
Any ideas?
After more testing it shows that this is what makes it not work:

Whether it works or not, the code inside the while loop gets executed.
When it works tmp actually has a value.
When it doesn't work tmp has no value.

Thanks to sneftel, we know what the problem is,
For me to use fgetws() instead of fgets(), I need tmp to be a wchar_t* instead of a char*.
Type casting seems to not work.
I tried changing the declaration of tmp to
wchar_t tmp[1024] = { 0x0 };
but I realized that tmp is a parameter in strtok() used elsewhere in my code.
I here is what I tried in that function:

I found this which looks like it can be useful but in the example it uses input from the user as UTF-16, how can that input be taken from the file instead?

It sounds an awful lot like the original file is UTF-16 encoded. When you copy/paste it in your text editor, you then save the result out as a new (default encoding) (ASCII or UTF-8) text file. Since a single character takes 2 bytes in a UTF-16-encode file but only 1 byte in a UTF-8-encoded file, that results in the file size being roughly halved when you save it out.
UTF-16 is fine, but you'll need to use Unicode-aware functions (that is, not fgets) to work with it. If you don't want to deal with all that Unicode jazz right now, and you don't actually have any non-ASCII characters to deal with in the file, just do the manual conversion (either with your copy/paste or with a command-line utility) before running your program.

what's the problem?
"scanf()" reads the input you've typed in and, because of your "%i" (integer) format string, is expecting to take that input and drop it into a number.
If you used "%s" as your format string, then you would take the input as a C-style character array (and have to convert those characters if you wanted to get the integer value out of that).
For example, you can replace this line:
scanf("%i", &guess);
with something like this:
char stringToConvert[256]; // if you type more than 256 characters, you'll crash

guess = atoi(stringToConvert); // this function converts the string into an integer
If you type in the character "a", scanf converts that to 97 in the ascii table.
