Debugging across projects in VS2008? - visual-studio

We have a DLL which provides the data layer for several of our projects. Typically when debugging or adding a new feature to this library, I could run one of the projects and Step Into the function call and continue debugging code in the DLL project. For some reason, that is no longer working since we switched to Visual Studio 2008... It just treats the code from the other project as a DLL it has no visibility into, and reports an exception from whatever line it crashes on.
I can work around that by just testing in the DLL's project itself, but I'd really like to be able to step in and see how things are working with the "real" code like I used to be able to do.
Any thoughts on what might have happened?

Is the pdb file for the dll in the same directory as the dll? This should all work -- I do just this on a regular basis. Look in the Modules window which will show you whether it's managed to load symbols for the dll. If it hasn't then you won't be able to step into functions in that dll.

It sounds like you have "Just My Code" enabled and VS is considering the other projects to not be your code. Try the following
Tools -> Options -> Debugger
Uncheck "Just my Code"
Try again

I've gotten around this issue by opening a class that will be called in the project you need, placing a breakpoint, keep the file open, and run the debugger. The debugger will hit the breakpoint and the relative path that VS uses will be updated so that future classes will be opened automagically.

How can I make ReSharper go into my own external sources while debugging?

Ever since I started using ReSharper it's never been clear to me how I can step into my own external sources. Sometimes it's working, but most of the times it is not.
As my frustrations are at its peak I would like to figure out how this works once and for all.
I have two C# solution files (one for my Framework and one for my Platform). I am using code from my Framework in my Platform solution through Nugets.
Both solutions are located on my disk (C:\<project>\framework and C:\<project>\platform). The Framework solution contains several projects (e.g. Framework.Core and Framework.Logging).
When I am debugging my Platform solution I cannot navigate into a method (F11) that is called on one of my Framework components.
As said, this has been working fine for me in the past but now it's not working anymore and I cannot find the solution.

ReSharper doesn't control anything about stepping into external source while debugging. The options in your screenshot control navigating into external source from standard ReSharper navigation commands (go to type, find usages, etc).
In order to debug external sources, you'll need to make sure you have access to the .pdb files for your external code. This must either be side-by-side with the assembly, or available in the symbol cache, or downloaded from a symbol server.

Error loading some.dll: Unable to load the test container 'e:\some.dll' or one of its dependencies

I have a VS2010 C# project, that references a large set of native .dll's (a commercial java runtime). These file are referenced as 'Content' files in the project, since the need to be copied with the project.
The code in these libraries is called using PInvoke, there is no assembly reference.
Every time I compile the solution, the Visual Studio testing framework tries to load all the referenced dll files, expecting to find .net assemblies which may contain unit tests. Since the are no .net assemblies, the following exception is thrown:
Error loading some.dll: Unable to load the test container 'e:\some.dll' or one of its dependencies. If you build your test project assembly as a 64 bit assembly, it cannot be loaded. When you build your test project assembly, select "Any CPU" for the platform. To run your tests in 64 bit mode on a 64 bit processor, you must change your test settings in the Hosts tab to run your tests in a 32 bit process. Error details: Could not load file or assembly 'file:///e:\some.dll' or one of its dependencies. The module was expected to contain an assembly manifest.
This takes a whole lot of time, and I would like to tell Visual Studio to not try to load these files.
How can I tell Visual Studio to stop trying to load these files?
Correct me if I got this wrong:
You are including the P/Invoke target binaries in to the VS solution because you want the binaries to be copied over to the target directory when the solution is built. You want this because the project will execute from the target directory as soon as the VS solution is built. Correct?
Often times VS packages (both default and 3rd party) try to get smart about the solution content and will follow certain triggers (which are difficult to contain and control by ourselves) and load the solution and project content in their own ways. Fighting the battle in this area has poor ROI than employing a simpler work around (below).
While I can't provide you with an authoritative answer on how to tell VS's test package to not load all binaries, I suggest removing such binaries from the project as 'content' and leave them in your source control where they are today. Add a post-build task that will copy the said binaries over to the target. This will still give you the same result as it is working today but, takes those binaries out of reach for the test probes.
You must check out configuration settings by just right clicking on your solution name and click on "Configuration Manager"
It will open a pop up window for Configuration Manager.
Check not for the platform your projects are using it is better to choose any CPU.

I tried to repro this issue and found that the root cause is that you have set your test project to be compiled as !AnyCpu. Is there any particular reason why you would want this for managed test code?
So unless you change this you will continue to see this message.
If you want to continue using this configuration for your test project you would need to update your .testsettings file as suggested in the message.
Sorry if this seems remedial. I am including it for the sake of completeness.
General library behavior
A library can be referenced either in the project file (and so the compiler injects to code to load the references) or dynamically at runtime with LoadLibrary() or PInvoke calls. When a referenced library is loaded, a function at the entry point is run can in turn load any libraries it depends on. When loading the library, there is a well-known set of paths that Windows will search, including %WINDIR%\Assembly and the current directory. There's a lot of good conceptual information on Wikipedia about this. I recommend reading it.
Possible Root Causes
I can't tell from your question if you are having trouble building the application, building the tests, or executing either. Generally I would not expect PInvoke to cause compile errors.
Error during app build: VS generally will show you that you have a reference to a DLL it can't find. However, you may be missing a DLL that is needed to satisfy all the dependencies. To resolve, just add the reference to the missing DLL. (This is the simplest issue, so I'm guessing this isn't what you're seeing.)
Error during test build: Since your test will reference your application/library, it also needs to have the same reference. Usually the easiest way to ensure you are getting everything is to remove all references and add a reference to the project you are testing. It's possible you some additional libraries are necessary for some tests, but not your app/lib itself. These need to be added separately.
Error during app execution: This can happen when starting the application, or later when an call to the external library is made if late binding is used.
Error during test execution: This can happen the same as with app execution. However, tests can also be "partially built" to only execute a small number of tests. In these cases, some files may not be copied. Using the [DeploymentItem()] attribute, you can specify that a test requires the presence of certain files in the test or app/lib project to function. MSDN describes how this can be done.
Resolution
For #1 & #2 the solution lies in adjusting the references in the project.
For #3 & #4, it may get trickier. There is a similar question to yours regarding Windows Mobile here which you may find useful, especially referring to using dumpbin to list out library dependencies. You can also use procmon from SysInternals to monitor file access during compile or load to see which files are not found. Then you can either include the missing file, or remove the library referencing it.

Visual Studio breakpoints break in the wrong source file (or multiple files simultaneously) if multiple files have the same name

In a team project I'm working on, setting a breakpoint in a file (say IdeasController.cs) will lead to erratic debugger behaviour if there's another file with the same name in the solution. I've reproduced the problem on several developers' workstations.
Example
I set a breakpoint in IdeasController.cs in our Web API:
Another file called IdeasController.cs exists in our separate MVC 4 web project. In the screenshot below, the debugger shows the Api->IdeasController source code, but the line highlight matches the code structure of Web->IdeasController. The breakpoint is duplicated, with one of them in the middle of a comment block.
The Breakpoint window shows the breakpoint in both files simultaneously:
On some workstations the debugger steps through the correct lines (regardless of the line highlight); on others it cheerfully steps through irrelevant lines (including comments and whitespace). I'm guessing this depends on which source file it chooses to display.
What I've tried
I've trawled the Internet. This kind of problem seems to occur when there's a mismatch between the debug file (*.pdb), the source file, and the compiled code. There are a lot of possible causes: duplicate file names (which can confuse the debugger[5]), outdated project build files, invalid solution cache, or incorrect build configuration.
These are the solutions I've found and tried:
Checked my build configuration.
Made sure the project isn't built in release mode.
Made sure we don't have code optimization enabled.
Made sure the project's debug module was loaded correctly. (Started debugging the project and checked Debug > Windows > Modules. Both assemblies are listed, not optimized, and have a symbol status of "Symbols loaded".)
Reset the debugging metadata & Visual Studio cache.
Closed Visual Studio and deleted the solution cache file (*.suo).[1]
Deleted each project's build output (the bin and obj folders). (For future reference: open the solution folder in Windows Explorer and type this in the search box: "type:folder AND (name:=bin OR name:=obj)".
Deleted the assembly cache folder (C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\dl3).[2][3]
None of these had any effect. I can rename one of the files (without renaming the class) to temporarily work around the problem, but that's far from ideal.
Where I am now
Page 14 of my latest Google search. Suggestions would be much appreciated. :)
If no better alternatives exist, you could put the breakpoint in code:
System.Diagnostics.Debugger.Break();
Just don't forget to remove it afterwards...
I'm so glad I found this post, thought I was the only one and was going insane! I'm having the same problem in VS2012 with VB.Net and have tried everything the OP mentioned.
Unique naming of the files seems to be the only 100% fix that I've found. Disabling all breakpoints until the application has loaded and then re-enabling the breakpoints you need works most of the time. Breakpoints in Lambda functions can still give you issues.
I just had the exact same problem. What solved it for me was deleting the .suo files belonging to the solution that contained the affected project/source file.
I also deleted my local symbolcache but I don't think that had anything to do with it.
(My solution contains multiple projects, one file (DataAdapter.cs) in one project was affected by this (VisualStudio put my breakpoints in the pdb belonging to System.Data.DataAdapter). I opened the .csproj file directly and was able to correctly set the breakpoint.)
I had the same problem today. I was able to trace it back to the fact that I had forgotten to set the platform target to x86 while debugging. Unfortunately the others (x64 / Any CPU) can be problematic while debugging. At least VS 2008 doesn't like them. I guess this is yet another reason to stay away.
Some speculation... I think the debugger (while running a 64 bit app) somehow "steals" breakpoints away from a file in certain cases. For me it was because another assembly was loaded first which had the same file name. I was able to avoid the issue, even in 64 bit mode, if I first manually loaded the assembly with my breakpoints: Assembly.Load("MyAssemblyWithBreakpoints");

Although renaming one of the files will work, I found that the simplest solution is to temporarily disable automatic loading of symbols for the "other" assembly.
Start the debugger and continue until you hit the erroneous breakpoint.
Find where the debugger actually set the breakpoint using the Call Stack window:
Right-click on the row with the yellow arrow and enable Show Module Names. (The row should also have the red breakpoint symbol on it.)
The assembly name is now visible on that row.
Find that assembly in the Modules window (Debug > Windows > Modules).
Right-click on the assembly and disable Always Load Automatically.
Stop the debugger.
Start debugging again.
By doing this, you're preventing the Visual Studio debugger from mapping the breakpoint to the wrong assembly. It will then load the symbols from the other [presumably] correct assembly first, therefore mapping the breakpoint to the correct assembly.
Why does this happen?
This seems to occur when two different symbol files (PDB files) — for two different assemblies — both reference a source file with the same name. Although the source files are completely different, the Visual Studio debuggger seems to get confused.
For example, imagine there are two different files both with the name IdeasController.cs. The first one compiles into assembly Api.dll, and the second one compiles into assembly Web.dll.
When the debugger loads symbols, it will either load Api.pdb or Web.pdb first. Let's say it loads Api.pdb first. Then even if you set a breakpoint in Web\IdeasController.cs, it will find a match for IdeasController.cs in Api.pdb. It then maps code from Web\IdeasController.cs to Api.dll. This won't map correctly, of course, and so you see all sorts of odd issues while debugging.
I just had this issue on Visual Studio 2017 (Version 15.9.7), were break points were skipped and the debugger just "jumped" over return statements etc.
After a while I noticed, that I've recently added a .runsettings file to the project - and it turned out, that in my case configuring the CodeCoverage data collector is causing this problem.
As soon as I removed this section:

from the .runsettings file, it worked like a charm again.
I just backed up and deleted the file and then added back to the project, that solved the problem. I just whish i did it before going through the beforementioned list :)
You may also try to Clean and Rebuild (not Build) all projects.
I was hitting this issue in Visual Studio 2015.
I had a sub-folder with a DLL I wanted to save as Version1. It seems even after removing the reference to that DLL, and then adding a reference to another project studio pulled in the existing reference and went to the wrong source file. I removed that DLL in the sub-folder then Studio got the correct source.
I found a helpful link on [MSDN that shows how to clear prior associated source files in studio at this link][1].
Summary:
In the Solution Explorer, right click on the solution name (ex: Solution ‘TestApplication’) and select Properties This will bring up the Solution Property Pages dialog
Under Common Properties, select Debug Source Files
In the Search these paths for source code files (Visual Studio .NET 2003) / Directories containing source code (Visual Studio 2005) box, add, remove and/or reorder the directories as desired
Click the OK button
I was having the same issue. In my case both the projects had same port numbers. I was able to resolve it by changing the port number of the project whose file's breakpoints were not hitting.
My guess is that IIS Express was caching the pdb file from the second project since both files had the same name, and the projects had the same port number.
What worked for me (VS2017) was disabling this option in Tools --> Options... --> Debugging --> General: "Require sources files to exactly match the original version", which is enabled by default but I had it turned on.
That was not enough though, I also had to manually remove obj and bin folders for all projects in solution.
Delete all the .pdb files of the project where the break point is hitting wrongly. This will solve the issue.
It happened to me (in VS 2008) to have two child breakpoint with the same memory address and the same associated file.
Those breakpoints were spawned at a certain time during the running of the process.
I noticed that I had duplicated .dll files in my project folders, and resolved removing the duplicated .dll, while keeping only one .dll per name in the debugging folder structure. (As example in my case I had /bin/Example.dll and /bin/Plug-in/Example.dll both present under my debug folder structure).
I had a very similar problem. In my case the problem was a different target .net framework in one of the projects causing VS2017 to wrongly load a source file (with the same name) of another project, not the one being activated with
ObjectHandle handle = Activator.CreateInstance
Changing the project's target framework to be the same in all projects fixed it.
I had a similar issue with the breakpoint being set in another file with the same filename in a different project.
It was caused by the fact that the debugging was started for that other project, while it was not started for the project where I tried to set the breakpoint. The breakpoint creation worked correctly after doing the Debug > Start New Instance for the intended project.

How do I debug into an ILMerged assembly?

Summary
I want to alter the build process of a 2-assembly solution, such that a call to ILMerge is invoked, and the build results in a single assembly. Further I would like to be able to debug into the resultant assembly.
Preparation - A simple example
New Solution - ClassLibrary1
Create a static function 'GetMessage' in Class1 which returns the string "Hello world"
Create new console app which references the ClassLibrary.
Output GetMessage from main() via the console.
You now have a 2 assembly app which outputs "Hello World" to the console.
So what next..?
I would like to alter the Console app build process, to include a post build step which uses ILMerge, to merge the ClassLibrary assembly into the Console assembly
After this step I should be able to:
Run the Console app directly with no ClassLibrary1.dll present
Run the Console app via F5 (or F11) in VS and be able to debug into each of the 2 projects.
Limited Success
I read this blogpost and managed to achieve the merge I was after with a post-build command of...
"$(ProjectDir)ILMerge.bat" "$(TargetDir)" $(ProjectName)
...and an ILMerge.bat file which read...
CD %1
Copy %2.exe temp.exe
ILMerge.exe /out:%2.exe temp.exe ClassLibrary1.dll
Del temp.exe
Del ClassLibrary1.*
This works fairly well, and does in fact produce an exe which runs outside the VS environment as required. However it does not appear to produce symbols (.pdb file) which VS is able to use in order to debug into the code.
I think this is the last piece of the puzzle.
Does anyone know how I can make this work?
FWIW I am running VS2010 on an x64 Win7 x64 machine.

The assemblies of my solution will need to coexist in the same folder as those of other solutions (some of which I will likely develop)
Some of these solutions will share dependencies on different versions of some assemblies.
So Solution1 might be made up of Console1 and ClassLibrary1.dll(v1) and Solution2 might be made up of Console2 and Classlibrary1.dll(v2).
Rather than register everything in the GAC, I thought I could ILMerge the correct version of a dependency into the primary assembly of the solution to avoid a collision.
However this currently renders it impossible to debug the solution, which I need to do in place in conjunction with the other solutions which will be present.
Does this sound complicated? That's because it is.. :D
I'm sorry you're having problems. I didn't follow your exact steps, but I created a console application, A.exe, that called a method in a dll, B.dll. I built both assemblies in Debug mode (so that they had PDB files). I then merged them like this:
ilmerge /out:foo.exe A.exe B.dll
(Actually A and B were in another directory so my command line was a little more complicated, but that shouldn't make a difference.) After ILMerge completed, there were two files in the current directory: foo.exe and foo.pdb. I then typed:
devenv foo.exe
This opened up Visual Studio and then I hit "F10" to start the debugger. I was able to step into the Main method in the executable and then used "F11" to step into the method in that had originally been in B.dll. The debugging experience was just the same as it had been in the original Visual Studio solution with the two assemblies.
If you are still having problems, please feel free to put your entire solution into a zip file and send it to me (mbarnett at microsoft dot com) and I can try it out.
I would suggest that you only ILMerge release builds of your assemblies. I can't imagine any benefit you'd get from merging debug assemblies.
I tried to do something like this and found that you should not rename anything, neither before not after the merge. Moving stuff to to separate directory is fine. If you do not rename anything, it works.
If you are still using ILMerge, like I am, there is also an another solution to debugging issues. At least for me the dubugging started working after NOT using the portable PDB format. My project is .NET Standard 2.0 and I was running it under .NET Framework.
I don't think ILMerge can do it. OTOH smartassembly from red-gate (not free) can do it, at least so it says at features
And yes, I do agree with Mike to only use ILMerge for release versions.

Visual Studio 2008 Unnecessary Project Building

I have a C# project which includes one exe and 11 library files. The exe references all the libraries, and lib1 may reference lib2, lib3, lib4, etc.
If I make a change to a class in lib1 and built the solution, I assumed that only lib1 and the exe would need to be changed. However, all dll's and the exe are being built if I want to run the solution.
Is there a way that I can stop the dependencies from being built if they have not been changed?

Visual Studio will always try to build everything when you run a single project, even if that project doesn't depend on everything. This choice can be changed, however. Go to Tools|Options|Projects and Solutions|Build and Run and check the box "Only build startup projects and dependencies on Run". Then when you hit F5, VS will only build your startup project and the DLLs it depends on.
I just "fixed" the same problem with my VS project. Visual Studio did always a rebuild, even if didn't change anything. My Solution: One cs-File had a future timestamp (Year 2015, this was my fault). I opened the file, saved it and my problem was solved!!!
I am not sure if there is a way to avoid dependencies from being built. You can find some info here like setting copylocal to false and putting the dlls in a common directory.
Optimizing Visual Studio solution build - where to put DLL files?
We had a similar problem at work. In post-build events we were manually embedding manifests into the outputs in the bin directory. Visual Studio was copying project references from the obj dir (which weren't modified). The timestamp difference triggered unnecessary rebuilds.
If your post-build events modify project outputs then either modify the outputs in the bin and obj dir OR copy the modified outputs in the bin dir on top of those in the obj dir.
You can uncheck the build option for specified projects in your Solution configuration:

We actually had this problem on my current project, in our scenario even running unit tests (without any code changes) was causing a recompile. Check your build configuration's "Platform".
If you are using "Any CPU" then for some reason it rebuilds all projects regardless of changes. Try using processor specific builds, i.e. x86 or x64 (use the platform which is specific to the machine architecture of your machine). Worked for us for x86 builds.

Now, after I say this, some propeller-head is going to come along and contradict me, but there is no way to do what you want to do from Visual Studio. There is a way of doing it outside of VS, but first, I have a question:
Why on earth would you want to do this? Maybe you're trying to save CPU cycles, or save compile time, but if you do what you're suggesting you will suddenly find yourself in a marvelous position to shoot yourself in the foot. If you have a library 1 that depends upon library 2, and only library 2 changes, you may think you're OK to only build the changed library, but one of these days you are going to make a change to library 2 that will break library 1, and without a build of library 2 you will not catch it in the compilation. So in my humble opinion, DON'T DO IT.
The reason this won't work in VS2005 and 2008 is because VS uses MSBuild. MSBuild runs against project files, and it will examine the project's references and build all referenced projects first, if their source has changed, before building the target project. You can test this yourself by running MSBuild from the command line against one project that has not changed but with a referenced project that has changed. Example:
msbuild ClassLibrary4.csproj
where ClassLibrary4 has not changed, but it references ClassLibrary5, which has changed. MSBuild will build lib 5 first, before it builds 4, even though you didn't mention 5.
The only way to get around all these failsafes is to use the compiler directly instead of going through MSBuild. Ugly, ugly, but that's it. You will basically be reduced to re-implementing MSBuild in some form in order to do what you want to do.
It isn't worth it.

I had this problem too, and noticed these warning messages when building on Windows 7 x64, VS2008 SP1:
cl : Command line warning D9038 : /ZI is not supported on this platform; enabling /Zi instead
cl : Command line warning D9007 : '/Gm' requires '/Zi'; option ignored
I changed my project properties to:
C/C++ -> General -> Debug Information Format = /Zi
C/C++ -> Code Generation -> Enable Minimal Build = No
After rebuilding I switched them both back and dependencies work fine again. But prior to that no amount of cleaning, rebuilding, or completely deleting the output directory would fix it.

Yes, exclude the non-changing bits from the solution. I say this with a caveat, as you can compile in a way where a change in build number for the changed lib can cause the non built pieces to break. This should not be the case, as long as you do not break interface, but it is quite common because most devs do not understand interface in the .NET world. It comes from not having to write IDL. :-)
As for X projcts in a solution, NO, you can't stop them from building, as the system sees a dependency has changed.
BTW, you should look at your project and figure out why your UI project (assume it is UI) references the same library as everything else. A good Dependency Model will show the class(es) that should be broken out as data objects or domain objects (I have made an assumption that the common dependency is some sort of data object or domain object, of course, but that is quite common). If the common dependency is not a domain/data object, then I would rethink my architecture in most cases. In general, you should be able to create a path from UI to data without common dependencies other than non-behavioral objects.
Not sure of an awesome way to handle this, but in the past if I had a project or two that kept getting rebuilt, and assuming I wouldn't be working in them, I would turn the build process off for them.
Right click on the sln, select configuration manager and uncheck the check boxes. Not perfect, but works when Visual Studio isn't behaving.
If you continue to experience this problem, it may be due to a missing or out of date calculated dependency (like a header) that is listed in your project, but does not exist.
This happens to me especially common after migrating to a new version (for example: from 2012 to 2013) because VS may have recalculated dependencies in the conversion, or you are migrating to a new location.
A quick check is to double-click every file in offending project from solution explorer. If you discover a file does not exist, that is your problem.
Failing a simple missing file: You may have a more complicated build date relationship between source and target. You can use a utility to find out what front-end test is triggering the build. To get that information you can enable verbose CPS logging. See: Andrew Arnott - Enable C++ and Javascript project system tracing (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/vsproject/archive/2009/07/21/enable-c-project-system-logging.aspx). I use the DebugView option. Invaluable tool when you need it.
