I'm working with a C# solution in VS 2010. Right now, since I'm targeting AnyCPU, when I want to build my installer, I can just select Release mode and hit build and everything is done for me. However, pretty soon I'm going to have to add a C++ DLL project to the solution to accomplish some low-level stuff. To avoid having two different download links for x86 and x64, I'd like to include both builds in my installer. But, it will be very annoying if I have to have separate configurations for x86 and x64. I'll have to build one, then the other, then package it up. Is there some way I can get Visual Studio to compile both the x86 and x64 builds of the C++ project as part of Release mode?
Well, I found a solution. Just make two projects, one for x86 build and one for x64 build, referencing the same source files. It's ugly, but it works.
I think that you will have to manually edit the proj files to ensure that the msbuild instructions are correct. I suspect it's not a hard job.
Just add executing command to build such configuration in PostBuild event of C++ DLL project. Use macroses and help of "devenv /?".
AFAIR e.g.:
devenv $(SolutionName) /project $(ProjectName) /ProjectConfig "Release|x64"

I have a (mostly C#) solution that needs to build in x64 because I integrate with a C++ project, so I had to choose a platform.
I noticed that my code changes don't always show up at runtime and I found out that when Solution is Debug x64 it compiles the changed project but does not copy the dll to the bin of the startup project, so the debug session uses an older version of that dll.
I tried most variations of building, and the dll-copy never happens, except when I rebuild the startup project, or the solution, obviously...
When on AnyCpu, all works perfectly all the time. So, alternate solution: maybe I can use the C++ project and keep my C# projects on anycpu?
All projects are enabled in the solution config for both anycpu and x64.
Any suggestions I could look out for?
Because the problematic project was a dependency of a dependency of the startup assembly, I tried adding a direct reference to it from the startup project. The issue disappeared...
Of course, I prefer not having refs that aren't really necessary, so when I removed that new reference again, it kept working. So, now I cannot simulate the issue anymore.
Using git the only change I can see is that the ProjectReference is now a lowercase guid, and it was uppercase... This probably happened when I gave re-referenced the project a try earlier... odd stuff shrug
I'm trying to add a project that must build as a 32bit library (let's call it sdk32) in a source tree that is configured for Visual Studio 2010 64 bit. I.e. every project is a 64 bit library or application, but I need this sdk32 project as a 32bit wrapper for an SDK.
I'm aware that in Linux one can use the -m32 flag to the compiler (as explained here Using QMAKE to build a both 32 and 64 bits versions of project); but is it possible to have a similar solution, so that in a console configured for VS2010 64bit (with its vcvarsall.bat x64 called), after running qmake -r for my tree I get every project configured for x64 but sdk32 will be configured for Win32? It should also work for qmake -r -tp vc
So far the only solution I can think of is a dirty trick, invoking a script (as explained here: Qt: Run a script BEFORE make) that would "understand" the x64 tags in the vcxproj and Makefiles and replace them with Win32, but this solution seems fragile to me, and too dependent on how the project looks like right now, which would prevent changes to the configuration in a comfortable way in the future.
I am sure this has happened before, but I couldn't find a solution after googling this for almost a day. Any suggestions?
PS: the "sdk32" project doesn't need QT at all. The issue is that we use qmake as the Makefile and .vcxproj files creation step (because many other projects do use Qt).
I am creating a very large project (a few thousand lines) and so would rather not use Notepad++. An IDE would make it so much easier. I have experience with Microsoft Visual Studio and love it. Is there some easy way to use Cygwin's GCC from within Microsoft Visual Studio?
Alternately, are there any other good Windows IDEs for GCC besides NetBeans and Eclipse? (I hate both of them with a passion.)
There are several ways to go here:
Option 1: Create a Custom Build Tool
Visual Studio 2005 and newer will let you register custom build tools. They tell the IDE how to transform files of one form (e.g. a .cpp file) into another form (e.g. an .obj file).
So far as I know, no one has done this yet for GCC. And, doing it yourself requires writing COM code, which is probably too deep a pool to dive into just for a single project. You'd have to have a compelling reason to take this project on.
You then have to manually adjust each project to tell it to use the custom build tool instead of the default, since you're using a file name extension (.cpp, probably) that Visual C++ already knows about. You'll run into trouble if you try to mix the VC++ and g++ compilers for a single executable built from multiple modules.
On the plus side, if you were looking to start an open source project, this sounds like a good one to me. I expect you'd quickly gather a big user base.
Option 2: Makefile Project
Start Visual Studio and say File > New Project.
In the Visual C++ section, select Makefile Project
Fill out the Makefile Project Wizard:
Build command line: make
Clean commands: make clean
Rebuild command line: make clean all
You can leave the Output (for debugging) field alone if you've named your executable after the project name and it lands where Visual Studio expects to find it.
Leave the rest of the fields alone unless you know what they are and why you want to change them. As an example, you might choose to pass a -D flag on the Preprocessor definitions line to get separate debug and release outputs. If you know you want this, you know how to set it up, so I'm not going to make this long answer even longer in order to explain it.
You'll be asked the same set of questions for the Release build. If you want to bother with separate debug and release builds, you'd make any changes here.
Having done all this, you still have to create the Makefile, and add a make.exe to your PATH. As with the debug vs. release question, going into that level of detail would push this answer off topic.
As ugly as this looks, it's still easier than creating custom build tools. Plus, you say you need to port to Unix eventually, so you're going to need that Makefile anyway.
Option 3: Cross-Platform Development
You say you want to port this program to Unix at some point, but that doesn't mean you must use GCC on Windows now. It is quite possible to write your program so that it builds under Visual C++ on Windows and GCC/Makefiles on *ix systems.
There are several tools that make this easier. One very popular option is CMake, which is available as an installation time option in newer versions of Visual Studio. There are many alternatives such as SCons and Bakefile.
Clang
You can use the Clang compiler with Visual Studio to target Android, iOS, and Windows.
If you are targeting Android, you can use the Clang/LLVM compiler that ships with the Android NDK and toolchain to build your project. Likewise, Visual Studio can use Clang running on a Mac to build projects targeting iOS. Support for Android and iOS is included in the “Mobile Development with C++” workload. If you are targeting Windows, you have a few options:
Use Clang/LLVM; “Clang for Windows” includes instructions to install Clang/LLVM as a platform toolset in Visual Studio.
Use Clang to target Windows with Clang/C2 (Clang frontend with Microsoft Code Generation).
GCC
If your project targets Linux or Android, you can consider using GCC. Visual Studio’s C++ Android development natively supports building your projects with the GCC that ships with the Android NDK, just like it does for Clang. You can also target Linux – either remotely or locally with the Windows Subsystem for Linux – with GCC.

I'm from the future.
I keep (poking at) a C/C++ toolchain using Visual Code on Win/Lin/Mac and MinGW installed from Choclatey.
(This was done for my sanity - install GDB and GCC however you want)
I've run it with GCC and GDB with IntelliSense using MS's own weird JSON makefiles.
Someday, someone (you?) will write a Gradle or Python script to generate these; for now the examples online in the docs seem to work.
It seems to require three types of JSON thing;
a single IntelliSense configuration for the whole workspace
a Debugging Configuration entry for each binary you want to debug
these can invoke the build tasks
a Build Task per-artifact

I have VS2005, VS2008, and VS2010 installed on my Win7 development machine. I have one particular project that uses a 3rd party DLL that gets an exception during the LoadLibrary() call when the EXE project is built by VS2010 (when targeting either the v100 or v90 toolset.) It works perfectly when built by directly VS2005 or VS2008.

I should be able to open the VS2010 project and change the Platform Toolset from v100 to v90 and then VS2010 will actually use the VS2008 compiler, headers and libraries to build the program. If it is, then it isn't doing it "right" because the DLL will not load when the project is built this way. I tried looking at the build log to verify which compiler is used, but there are no paths or version numbers in my logs, so that was a bust.
This is a plain C (not C++, not MFC, not .NET) project written directly to the Win32Apis. Is there any way for this to work, or am I just stuck using a different compiler for a single project (out of over 100 that comprise the whole system)?

After installing Daffodil, you'll be able to use VS 2010 to build projects using older versions of the libraries.
I think I've solved it. It seems that, while VS2010 will happily run the VS2008 compiler, linker, etc. VS2010 will NOT leave the project alone. When the project is imported to VS2010 there are some new default settings added to the command line and, apparently, at least one of them is different enough from VS2008 to make the DLL I'm using fail to load.
When I changed the Advanced Linker setting for Data Execution Prevention (DEP) from Yes (the default) to NO, my program started working again! In fact, I no longer even need to compile using the v90 toolset -- the ENTIRE problem was caused by the new default for the /NXCOMPAT linker command line switch. The /NXCOMPAT switch isn't even referenced in the project settings in the VS2005 IDE (where the project was created), but running "link /?" in the VC8 bin folder shows that the switch was known and the default was NO.
Too bad the Visual Studio IDE doesn't include a list of default settings that were in use by a project that have CHANGED in the new version. If that is too difficult, the importer should specify the changed settings using the old default values, otherwise the project was imported incorrectly, wasn't it?
I have a Visual Studio 2008 solution with two projects in it. A C++ DLL and a Csharp application.
The Csharp application uses [DllImport] to access the functions in the DLL, and has a dependency set on the DLL.
For some reason, setting the dependency isn't sufficient to cause VS to copy the DLL to the build path of the app. So the app project has a post-build event which causes the DLL to get copied. (If anyone knows of a cleaner way of doing this, please let me know!)
The problem I have is that when I make a change to the DLL code, then attempt to run the Csharp application in the debugger, VS2008 fails to realise that the DLL must be rebuilt (and re-copied).
I have to force a re-build of the Csharp application (ie by explicitly choosing build, or by "touching" a .CS file).
Does anyone know how to tell Visual Studio to do the right thing?

I am using project dependencies. They aren't working correctly.
I am using a post-build event to copy the DLL across.
The issue is that, if you simply choose to debug the application, Visual Studio fails to recompile the changed C++ project, despite the fact that there is a dependency in place.
I know the dependency is working, because if I choose "Build" (as opposed to "Debug") the C++ DLL is built.
"Build" and "Debug" do different things. In Tools - Options - Projects and Solutions - Build and Run, there is a checkbox "Only build startup projects and dependencies on Run". This is checked by default. So, if VS isn't recognising the DLL as a dependency, it won't build it when you choose "Debug".
I don't have VS to hand (only Express), but you could try adding the C++ DLL as a reference rather than a dependency.
Hmm... so I haven't done this exact thing before but I just threw together a C++ lib project and a C# winform project in the same solution. I right-clicked the solution, chose Properties and then under Common Properties->Project Dependencies, I made the C# one depend on the C++ one.
When I make a mod to the C++ one, it will ask me if I want to rebuild the C++ one. There's a "Don't ask me" checkbox too.
Maybe my test is different than your situation, but it seemed to work when I did that.

Assuming the DLL project isn't used in another solution, why not put the post-build event on the DLL app project, so it is always copied?
I've not tried, but can't you do this with the build order?
I have experienced this same issue with applications that have DLL project dependencies. It seems to me that the problem is that Visual Studio only launches the post-build event if it has to recompile something in the Application's project. So, if you modify the DLL source without modifying any of the headers that the Application includes, then the Application is not recompiled because from it's perspective the DLL is the same. Since the application is not recompiled, the post-build event is not triggered. So, the Application is left with out of date DLLs. I have yet to come up with a good solution to this problem.
