Rename all files to lowercase, replace spaces - windows

In a Windows command prompt, how can I rename all the files to lower case and remove all spaces?

Make a batch file
#echo off
setlocal enabledelayedexpansion
for /f "delims=" %%i in ( ' dir /b /a-d *.* ') do (
set name="%%i"
set newname=!name: =!
rename "%%i" !newname!
)
NOTE: Run under a test directory and see if you have the expected result. I have not tested it.
EDIT: Forgot to say this will only remove the spaces.

I used this batch file to rename all folders and subfolders to lowercase names:
#ECHO OFF
CALL:GETDIRS
:GETDIRS
FOR /F "delims=" %%s IN ('DIR /B /L /AD') DO (
RENAME "%%s" "%%s"
CD "%%s"
CALL:GETDIRS
CD ..
)
GOTO:EOF

To make the trick of "lowercase" and "remove spaces" ...
In the given solution, in the 'dir' statement, use also "/l"
The /L statement in dir forces to lowercase the filenames in the
result.
As "Windows-RENAME" command, if you use the "same" filename, it will note convert from uppercase to lowercase.
ren XPTO.TXT xpto.txt
The result will always be : XPTO.TXT
To 'bypass' this, we use the ephemeral technique:
move old to temp, then -> move temp to new
Then the solution would be:
#echo off
if exist temporaryfilenametorename del temporaryfilenametorename /f/q
setlocal enabledelayedexpansion
for /f "delims=" %%i in ('dir *.csv /l /b /a-d') do (
set name="%%i"
set newname=!name: =!
rename "%%i" temporaryfilenametorename
rename temporaryfilenametorename !newname!
)

How to batch rename files in windows removing everything from them but set of listed strings?

I have went through a lot of guides for it, but havent found a way to do something similar to lets say turn all files in folder, like these files:
djhwu4s_cat_ruhg29.png
397y_dog_j0929_ej93.png
8yhh_owl.png
into these:
_cat.png
_dog.png
_owl.png
So basically removing everything from file names but a list of predefined strings i am searching for. In example above i would define list as "_cat", "_dog", "_owl". I know that each file will have only one of these variables, and there will be only one file with each of them in folder.
Will appreciate any tips on how to achieve that. Thanks in advance!
edit:
Here is what i came up with (with stuff i can understund) and what seems to be working fine now.
#echo off
setlocal enabledelayedexpansion
set v1=_cat-cat
set v2=_cat-owl
set v3=_cat
set v4=_dog
set v5=_owl
set v6=_horse
FOR /L %%a IN (1,1,6) DO (
rem echo %%a
rem echo !v%%a!
FOR /f %%f in ('dir /b /a:-D *!v%%a!.*') DO (
REN %%f !v%%a!.*
)
FOR /f %%f in ('dir /b /a:-D *!v%%a!_*.*') DO (
REN %%f !v%%a!.*
)
)
rem using two passes of this simpler code i can grasp and understund with dot and with underscore
rem after constructed variables value i make sure cat-cat is not recognised as and renamed to cat
rem no matter if im getting file with that variable as the last string before extension or another underscore
rem Gonna test it in combat now
For some reason this stuff doesnt work with files containing spaces and characters like:
"ab’c efg_dog.png"
FOR /L %%a IN (1,1,36) DO (
FOR /f %%f in ('dir /b /l /a:-D *!v%%a!.*') DO (
REN "%%f" "!v%%a!.*"
)
FOR /f %%f in ('dir /b /l /a:-D *!v%%a!_*.*') DO (
REN "%%f" "!v%%a!.*"
)
)
After further testing i have realised the problem starts with the %%f, and not the REN function as i thought. echo %%f before ren gives just the first part of the name to the first space, hence the REN function cant find the file. In case of "ab’c efg_dog.png" after finding the file with dir, the %%f becomes just "ab’c".
edit: After more tests and experiments and adding those "delims" to the code, the echo now shows proper, full names to be renamed, but it replaces that weird ’ character with ' for the REN command and thats why it still cant find the file to rename.
FOR /L %%a IN (1,1,36) DO (
FOR /f "delims=" %%f in ('dir /b /l /a:-D *!v%%a!.*') DO (
echo %%f
echo REN "%%f" "!v%%a!.*"
)
FOR /f "delims=" %%f in ('dir /b /l /a:-D *!v%%a!_*.*') DO (
echo %%f
echo REN "%%f" "!v%%a!.*"
)
)
#ECHO OFF
SETLOCAL
rem The following setting for the directory is a name
rem that I use for testing and deliberately includes spaces to make sure
rem that the process works using such names. These will need to be changed to suit your situation.
SET "sourcedir=u:\your files"
PUSHD "%sourcedir%"
FOR /f "delims=" %%e IN ('dir /b /a-d "*_*" 2^nul ^|findstr /v /b "_"') DO (
FOR /f "tokens=2delims=_." %%y IN ("%%e") DO ECHO REN "%%e" "_%%y%%~xe"
)
POPD
GOTO :EOF
For lack of examples, here's a start.
Always verify against a test directory before applying to real data.
Process the list of filenames that match *_*; find those names that do not start _, pick the second string between the delimiters _ and . and rename using that string (in %%y), prefixed by _ and appended with the original extension.
The ren command is simply echoed to the screen for verification. When happy, remove the echo before the ren to actually execute the rename.

Write a script to recursively list directories and files within it in Batch script

I am trying to write a batch script that recursively lists all directories and their files with *.js type in the below format:
For example, if I start with the C:\project directory
c:\project
project.js
project_time.js
c:\project\core
core.js
core_render.js
core_application.js
I tried to implement the above logic in code as follows:
#echo off
for /r %%f in (*.js) do (
echo %%f >> names.txt
)
pause
I was not able to print the directory under which the files are listed.
#echo off
setlocal disabledelayedexpansion
set "lastdir="
( for /r %%A in (*.js) do (
set "nextdir=%%~dpA"
setlocal enabledelayedexpansion
if /i not "!lastdir!" == "!nextdir!" (
rem Empty line and directory path.
if defined lastdir #echo(
#echo !nextdir!
)
endlocal
rem Filename.
#echo %%~nxA
set "lastdir=%%~dpA"
)
) > "names.txt"
The lastdir variable is to record the last directory path so it is echoed only once.
If lastdir is different to %%~dpA:
If lastdir is defined, then an empty line will be echoed.
Directory path of found file is echoed.
Filename is always echoed.
for modifiers dp is the drive and path. nx is the name and extension.
setlocal enabledelayedexpansion is used only where needed so paths with ! are not vulnerable.
I am not going to suggest a command line solution as it would be very long. Instead suggest use of tree command if the output format is suitable.
Here's an untested example, (I'm not expecting it to be quick if your base directory is large):
#Echo Off
(
For /F "Delims=" %%G In ('Dir /B /S /A:D "C:\Project" 2^> NUL') Do (
%__AppDir__%where.exe /Q "%%G":*.js 1> NUL 2> NUL
If Not ErrorLevel 1 (
Echo/
Echo %%G
For /F "EOL=| Delims=" %%H In ('%__AppDir__%where.exe "%%G":*.js')Do (
Echo %%~nxH
)
)
)
) 1> "names.txt"
Pause
If you prefer to run something from the Command Prompt, then try this version:
(For /F "Delims=" %G In ('Dir /B/S/AD "C:\Project" 2^>NUL')Do #(%__AppDir__%where.exe /Q "%G":*.js >NUL 2>&1&&(Echo/&Echo %G&For /F "EOL=|Delims=" %H In ('%__AppDir__%where.exe "%G":*.js')Do #Echo %~nxH)))>"names.txt"
Two simple ways to do this:
dir /S *.js
You get the answers, just as you requested.
FORFILES /S /M *.js /C "cmd /c echo #path"
You get complete path for every file.

rename files in batch script

I have folder with files named:
-backup- powerpoint1.ppt
-backup- powerpoint2.ppt
-backup- powerpoint3.ppt
I need to rename those files in the same folder to:
powerpoint1.ppt
powerpoint2.ppt
powerpoint3.ppt
I need a batch script to accomplish that.
I have searched online and came up with this so far but the values are resolving properly:
#echo off
setlocal EnableDelayedExpansion
set a=1
for /f "delims=" %%i in ('dir /b *.pptx') do (
set "dt=%%i"
echo.!dt!
set sh=!dt!
echo.!sh!
set "str=%sh:~12,4%"
echo "%%i" "%str%"
set /a a+=1
)
You code does not work as expected, because you missed applying delayed expansion for the interim variables sh and str. Also the extracted string portion !sh:~12,4! is not correct, it should read !sh:~9! in order to remove the -backup- prefix. This is the corrected code:
#echo off
setlocal EnableDelayedExpansion
set a=1
for /f "delims=" %%i in ('dir /b *.pptx') do (
set "dt=%%i"
echo/!dt!
set sh=!dt!
echo/!sh!
set "str=!sh:~9!"
ECHO ren "%%i" "!str!"
set /a a+=1
)
Actually I would not extract certain character positions, but I would remove the constant prefix -backup- by sub-string replacement. And you do not need the interim variables sh and str, neither do you need the counter a. So I would do it like this:
#echo off
setlocal EnableDelayedExpansion
for /f "delims=" %%i in ('dir /b *.pptx') do (
set "dt=%%i"
set "dt=!dt:*-backup- =!"
ECHO ren "%%i" "!dt!"
)
endlocal
After having verified the correct output, remove the upper-case ECHO command from the code to actually rename files.
If the unwanted parts in your file names are space separated a simple:
#Echo off
For /F "delims=" %%A in ('Dir /B/A-D "-backup- powerpoint*"'
) Do For /f "tokens=2" %%B in ("%%A") Do Echo Ren "%%A" "%%B"
Should do (independent of the extension).
Ren "-backup- powerpoint1.ppt" "powerpoint1.ppt"
Ren "-backup- powerpoint2.ppt" "powerpoint2.ppt"
Ren "-backup- powerpoint3.ppt" "powerpoint3.ppt"

Batch remove parenthesis from file name

After successfully removing a bunch of Google Drive Folder duplicates, some files retain a "filename(2)"name.
Is there a way to batch rename every file so the parenthesis and the number inside the parenthesis is gone?
That includes folders and sub-folders.
Try like this :
Create a file test.bat with the code below in it and replace the path to test in the var $path
#echo off
set $path="C:\Users\CN Micros\Desktop\PROGRAMMATION\test"
for /f "tokens=1-3 delims=^(^)" %%a in ('dir /b/a-d %$path%') do (
if exist %$path%\"%%a(%%b)%%c" echo ren %$path%\"%%a(%%b)%%c" "%%a%%c"
)
pause
Then run it in the CMD or by double clicking.
If the output is ok for you remove the echo
The program create 3 tokens : %%a = what's before the (), %%b What's inside the () and %%c what's after the ().
Then we arrange this 3 tokens to rename the files without the ().
If you have some file who have the same final name ie : "file(1)name", "file(2)name" --> "filename"
It will work only with the first one. If you have this case you have to add a counter at the end of file to be sure that they will be renamed.
This will create renfiles.bat.txt for you to examine in Notepad and then rename to .bat and execute if you are happy with it.
#echo off
dir /b /a-d *(*).* |find /i /v "%~nx0" |find /i /v "repl.bat" |repl "(.*)\(.*\)(\..*)" "ren \q$&\q \q$1$2\q" xa >"renfiles.bat.txt"
This uses a helper batch file called repl.bat - download from: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qidqwztmetbvklt/repl.bat
Place repl.bat in the same folder as the batch file or in a folder that is on the path.
Edit: This version will recurse through subdirectories:
#echo off
dir /b /s /a-d *(*).* |find /i /v "%~nx0" |find /i /v "repl.bat" |repl ".*\\(.*)\(.*\)(\..*)" "ren \q$&\q \q$1$2\q" xa >"renfiles.bat.txt"
#ECHO OFF
SETLOCAL
SET "sourcedir=U:\sourcedir"
FOR /f "delims=" %%a IN (
'dir /b /s /a-d "%sourcedir%\*" '
) DO (
SET "name=%%~na"
SETLOCAL ENABLEDELAYEDEXPANSION
SET "newname=!name:)=!"
SET "newname=!newname:(=!"
IF "!name!" neq "!newname!" (
IF EXIST "%%~dpa!newname!%%~xa" (ECHO cannot RENAME %%a
) ELSE (ECHO(REN "%%a" "!newname!%%~xa")
)
endlocal
)
GOTO :EOF
You'd need to set your required directory into sourcedir. I used u:\sourcedir which suits my testing.
The required REN commands are merely ECHOed for testing purposes. After you've verified that the commands are correct, change ECHO(REN to REN to actually rename the files.

Need a renaming script that strips filenames and adds folder name with increments

I need a script that will allow me to strip filenames to files that are placed within folders, and apply the folder names to the files, and add an incremental number to the end of each filename.
So the filenames would look something like this in their original state:
gdgeregdja34gtj.jpg
And then look like this after the script is executed:
foldername>foldername001.jpg
foldername>foldername002.jpg
I have this script, which allows the folder name to prefix any filename of files within folders. But it doesn't strip the filenames.
#echo off
pushd "Folder"
for /d %%D in (*) do (
for %%F in ("%%~D\*") do (
for %%P in ("%%F\..") do (
ren "%%F" "%%~nxP_%%~nxF"
)
)
)
popd
This will echo the rename commands to the screen, so if it does what you want then remove the echo to make it work.
Filenames with ! characters will not be renamed.
#echo off
setlocal enabledelayedexpansion
for /d /r %%a in (*) do (
set n=0
pushd "%%a"
for /f "delims=" %%b in (' dir /b /a-d 2^>nul ') do (
set /a n=n+1
set num=0000!n!
echo ren "%%b" "%%~nxa!num:~-4!%%~xb"
)
popd
)
pause
