I've got a file named Vagrantfile and it's a ruby file but it cannot have the .rb at the end of the filename.
Is there a way to tell Netbeans that it's Ruby file?
Right-click the file in Files view (Ctrl-Shift-2 or ⌘-Shift-2) and look for "Open As...". When the context menu opens, select "text/x-ruby". Note that this works only when a file type is not detected automatically.
There is a caveat with this: Once a file w/o extension is opened as Ruby file, it treats all files w/o extension as Ruby files.
I was wondering this myself today, and came up with this:
# Vagrantfile.rb
Vagrant::Config.run do |config|
config.vm.box = "base"
# ...
end
and
# Vagrantfile
require "Vagrantfile.rb"
It's just Ruby after all!

You're almost there. Your code will show you all the conf files, but it will start checking in the folder where you're currently located, not the whole computer. To achieve that, try with:
Dir.glob("/**/*.conf") {|file| puts file}

I have create a Ruby class Worker, file name is Worker.rb:
class Worker
def initialize
...
end
def doTask(task_name)
...
end
end
Then, I created another Ruby script file, named run.rb (it requires Worker):
require 'Worker'
worker = Worker.new
worker.doTask("sort")
Both two ruby files are located directly under the project folder:
ProjectFolder/
-- Worker.rb
-- run.rb
I run the run.rb under project folder by command:
ruby run.rb
But get following error:
/Users/John/.rvm/rubies/ruby-2.3.0/lib/ruby/2.3.0/rubygems/core_ext/kernel_require.rb:55:in `require': cannot load such file -- Worker (LoadError)

I figured out after checking #Geo 's github project, I should use:
require_relative "worker"
require looks for the required file from the so called load path and not the current directory. Since the syntax for looking in the current directory was awkward Ruby 1.9 introduces require_relative, which looks in the current directory.
Change your code like this:
require_relative "Worker"
instead of
require "Worker"
The reason this does not work is because the current directory is not part of ruby's default load path.
If you run the following command, you will see what the current load path is and it will confirm that the current directory is not part of that path.
ruby -e 'puts $LOAD_PATH'
This should answer your primary question as to why the required file was not loaded.
As for a solution, require_relative will work and is probably the best solution in this case.
There are however still cases were inserting directories into the load path is helpful, if not required. For example say you have a script that can be run anywhere in the file system and you want the flexibility to require a particular version of your co-worker's foo class.

foo.rb

In a case like this either setting the RUBYSIM var (maybe in a wrapper) or setting the proper include path on the ruby command line can be a useful solution.
Again, your co-worker has not published this as a gem, he is just providing a shared directory.
There are several ways you can insert directories into the load path when it is appropriate, as demonstrated below:
You can use the -I command line flag
ruby -I some_path -e 'puts $LOAD_PATH'
You can set the RUBYLIB env var to include your current directory.
on unix/linix/osx
export RUBYLIB=some_path
on windows
set RUBYLIB=some_path
My test suite has a cucumber front end with a ruby backend, running the latest version of watir-webdriver and its dependencies atop the latest version of OSX. My cucumber environment is setup to execute in Firefox.
The export feature of our app creates a zip file but to test the import feature, I need the contents of the zip file.
My actual test needs to unpack that zip file and select the individual files in it for use in testing the import feature of our web application.
Can anyone point me to a reference that can help me figure out how to write that?
Based off my experience, you download this file the same way that a normal user might. So first off, you just click the download button or whatever and then can access the file wherever it is and check out its contents.
Assuming the downloads just go to your Downloads folder by default, there is some simple code you can use to select the most recently downloaded item:
fn = Dir.glob("~/Downloads/*.zip").max { |a,b| File.ctime(a) <=> File.ctime(b)}
Then just use the unzip shell command to unzip the file. No reason to add another gem into the mix when you can just use generic shell commands.
`unzip #{fn}`
Then, you'd use Dir.glob again to get the filenames of everything inside the unzipped files folder. Assuming the file was named "thing.zip", you do this:
files = Dir.glob("~/Downloads/thing/*")
If you want to files to be downloaded directly to your project folder, you can try this. This also prevents the popup from asking you if you really want to save the file which is handy. I think this still works but haven't used it in some time. The above stuff works for sure though.

the solution is on that link but i modified mine a little bit. I added the following to my common.rb file. see below:

I'm trying to write a Sinatra app that reads in a list from a file, and then spits back a random item from that list.
I'm having trouble figuring out the path to the file to read it, though. Sinatra says 'no such file or directory' when I try to load an item in my browser:
Errno::ENOENT at /wod
No such file or directory - http://localhost:4567/listing.txt
Here is the code:

I have the file in /public, which the Sinatra README says is the default location for hosting static files. Furthermore, if I put it in /public I can navigate to localhost:4567/listing.txt and read the file in the browser.
A couple things I noticed:
get /item
isn't correct, it should be:
get '/item' do
If you start your code inside the same directory the Ruby code is in, the current working-directory will be ".", which is where Ruby will look when trying to:
File.open('listing.txt', 'r').readlines
Ruby will actually use './listing.txt' as the path. That's OK if you manually launch the code from the root directory of the application, but that doesn't work well if you try to launch it from anywhere else.
It's better to be explicit about the location of the file when you're actually trying to load something for use with a web server. Instead of relying on chance, there are a couple things you can do to help make it more bullet-proof. Consider this:
def read_list
running_dir = File.dirname(__FILE__)
running_dir = Dir.pwd if (running_dir == '.')
File.open(running_dir + '/public/listing.txt', 'r').readlines
end
File.dirname gets the path information from __FILE__, which is the absolute path and name of the current file running. If the application was started from the same directory as the file, that will be ., which isn't what we want. In that case, we want the absolute path of the current working-directory, which Dir.pwd returns. Then we can append that to the path of the file you want, from the root of the application.
You'll need to do File.read('public/listing.txt', 'r') to get what you want here.
File.open isn't part of Sinatra and doesn't know to look in a specific place for static files, so it just looks in the current working directory.
Yesterday I discovered, that I can't reload my script rss.rb using load. It only do something unknown for me for several seconds, returns true and doesn't execute script. But It can be loaded (once) with no problems using require_relative. I had to rename script file, to use it as I wanted.
So why require_relative works, but load doesn't? And how to know, which filenames can't be loaded with load?
I'm using ruby 1.9.2p0 (2010-08-18) [i386-mingw32]

You're loading the rss.rb from the standard library. load goes through the $LOAD_PATH first and only if the file is not found there, looks for the file in the current directory.
You can make it look only in the current directory by doing load "./rss.rb".
The reason it works with require_relative is that require_relative never looks at the $LOAD_PATH.
When using load you should keep in mind that load, unlike require_relative will look for the file in the current directory, not in the directory where the script is. So whether or not it finds the file depends on which directory you're in when invoking the script. (Of course the same was true for loading local files using require in previous ruby versions).
