I'm a complete noob when it comes to WP7. From what I know of it, in WP7 you wouldn't be able to make an alarm clock app. As in, start app, set alarm for an hour from now, close app, app launches and rings alarm after an hour is up.
Is this not possible in WP7? Or is there some way of doing it that I'm not aware of? I have seen a workaround for a stopwatch using tombstoning, but that doesn't seem like it would work here.
With Windows Phone 7 [for 3rd party developers] it's not possible to write an application that runs in the background on the phone. (This was a deliberate decision with regards to maintaining performance and battery life - not a limitation of the OS which is fully multi-tasking.)
If you really want the user to be notified of something at a specific time, regardless of whether your application is running you'll need to have this monitored from a process on an external server and then send a [toast] notification to the user at the appropriate time.

I am new to windows phone app dev. I want to know if there is any way to have a notification alive till the user checks it. I found that "toast notification" expires in 10 seconds irrespective of user checks it or not. And there is no way of finding out if a tile notification arrived or not. Is there any workaround? I want to have notifications that are similar to Android notifications which stay till user checks them.
Persistent on-screen notifications on Windows Phone are not possible, by intentional design. It's interesting to see how many users on Android disliked persistent notifications when applications started to interrupt and then disrupt the current foreground application experience.
The design philosophy is that they distract from the user experience and could be easily abused by applications.
The general Microsoft recommendation for the platform would be to use a combination of a notification, Live Tile (reference), and in application UI update.
In Android 4.3, the behavior was changed to highlight applications that were constantly running (interesting reference)

I currently have a "dumbphone", but I'm trying to make an app that'll time and store the call duration of incoming calls for windows 7.1 ("7.5") phones, for the user scheduling purposes.
However, after extensive searching and googling, with topics like this one:

it seems that the Windows 7/7.1 SDK does not allow access to recognizing when a call is coming in. I've read about obscure and unobscure, but that this wouldn't be a good idea since it would start the timer anytime the UI hides the program, not just calls.
I've thought that maybe I could just pull the call duration or the start/end time from the call history, but windows 7 SDK doesn't support that either it seems.
So I decided to seek help. Is there a way to make this work? Is there some clever way to recognize when a call is incoming and stopped? Or some clever way to pull call times/durations? Or maybe a way to detect when the user presses that "accept incoming call" button? Or maybe a way to single out when a call is obscuring the UI?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Due to security reasons your application does not have any kind of accsess to call history ect. So you are in a sendbox and you don't know nothing about phone calls.
From the Windows Phone SDK, there is no way to achieve this!
The only thing I can think of is that when a call comes, the current app gets notified that is now Obscured because a new screen is now on top of it (the caller ID screen), and will get notified when it gets back to focus.
But the truth is that this happens even if a SMS message notification pops on the screen and the user taps to read it, or some app gets a notification pushed...
I have an application in WP7 silverlight that needs to be launched after a specific period of time, something like an alarm.
But I want to launch the application itself not WP7's alarm.
I use:
this.Visibility = Visibility.Collapsed;
for hiding the application, I know it is not the correct way for making it run in the background.

The platform specifically does not support running apps in the way you describe.
If your functionality can't run in a background agent then your only options are to use an alarm or toast message (sent as a push notification) to prompt the user to start the app.
One of the design decisions behind the platform is that the user should always know what is going on on the phone so having apps stop and start by themselves would be contrary to this.
You can run a background agent and display a toast notification to the user , and launch the application when the user clicks on the toast.
You can also push toast messages to the device, and rely on the user clicking the toast .
Is it possible to create an app the runs in the background? If so is there any samples out there for this?
In Windows Phone OS 7.1 you can actually use Background Agents now to perform tasks in the background.

Scheduled Tasks and background agents allow an application to execute
code in the background, even when the application is not running in
the foreground. The different types of Scheduled Tasks are designed
for different types of background processing scenarios and therefore
have different behaviors and constraints.
You can use a PeriodicTask or ResourceIntensiveTasks. Read more about it in the MSDN article above.

An application in the foreground can continue to run when the phone screen is locked(not background but...) by setting the PhoneApplicationService.ApplicationIdleDetectionMode property. By setting up your application to run when the phone screen is locked, a user is able to access the application quickly upon unlock. However, when your application runs under a locked screen, it could consume power outside of the user's control. For this reason, your application must minimize power usage when running under a locked screen
At the moment there is no way to create application that runs in background.
True multitasking for 3rd party Windows Phone 7 apps will come as an OS upgrade later this year. However, unless the app has to absolutely run in the background (like Pandora etc.), we as developers share some responsibility in making our apps feel at home with the rest of the OS.
Windows Phone OS offers app developers chances to save state of their applications to give the end users the feeling that it never stopped running; this is essentially the same as in other mobile platforms. As your app is being deactivated/closed, you have the option to "Tombstone" your state so that your users can come back to just where they left with BackStack navigation or future launches. Channel 9 had a nice set of demos & labs around tombstoning, found here.

Is it possible to track the accelerometer value while under the lock screen?
I managed to write a simple application which counts from 1 up to 100 using a timer which fires an event on which I increment a counter.
But when I use register a handler for the ReadingChanged event of the accelerometer it will not be fired anymore once the screen has been locked. Even if I unlock the screen again I will have to readd my handler.

I hope they will change the api soon, because of that it is not possible to write any good sleep tracking / sport tracking applications ... :(
I was helping a guy with this a couple of days ago. He had an app that tracks GPS and accelerometer data under lock screen.
Turned out the app accelerometer data stopped tracking when under manual or auto lock screen.
There may be an issue here to be looked into.
Under lock screen it is a good idea to minimise power usage... disable all uncessary code, like ui updates. My understanding of one the motivations for idle detection and running under lockscreen being opened up during CTP was in response to a lot of feedback from developers of map/tracking apps that basically need this for their app to be of any use.
I'm not sure of the usage case where you'd want to use the accelerometer under the lock screen.
Apps typically run under the lock screen when you need them to do something when you're not interacting with the device. e.g. playing music or downloading a large file.
If you wanted accelerometer data I'd assume that the device is being held and, therefore, presumably, looked at. Given this, why would you therefore want to run under the lock screen?
That being said, if you had a good reason to do so, you should still be aware that:
when your application runs under a locked screen, it ... must minimize
power usage
(from the Marketplace Certification Requirements.)
In my understanding, reading values from sensors is not minimizing power usage.
