I have a VB.Net windows forms application that has been around for a very long time. I am working the project in Visual Studio 2010 Premium, on my Windows 7 x64 workstation. Everything has been going along fine till a couple days ago. No every time I build this project Visual Studio 2010 crashes.
The only thing i have to go on is this from another Visual Studio 2010 instance that attached the debugger to the dieing process.
...
The thread 'Win32 Thread' (0x177c) has exited with code -2147023895 (0x800703e9).
The thread 'Win32 Thread' (0xc44) has exited with code -2147023895 (0x800703e9).
The program '[4224] devenv.exe: Native' has exited with code -2147023895 (0x800703e9).
No one else on my team has this issue, and I don't have problems with any other projects.
This is .Net 4.0.
Any thoughts or suggestions are much appreciated,
Beezler
It might be wise to start VS with the /safemode parameter.
I also had this problem and I solved it by uninstalling the Achievements extension.
Do you have any modifications whatsoever to the solution/projects/code that are different from the team members not experiencing the crash? Have you tried getting a fresh-cut of the source to a different directory and trying to build that?
Another thing to look at would be to disable any add-ins/extensions you might have installed.
I had the same problem but with C++ projects. They ran fine for a while, then all of a sudden just started crashing on every build. This fixed it for me:
To fix: click start, type "cmd" into the search box, right click "cmd.exe" in the search results, select "run as admin", then run this command: regsvr32 "C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\ieproxy.dll"

If that doesn't work, the plugin AnkHSVN is known to cause the same problem. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/visualstudio/archive/2010/05/11/if-you-are-seeing-intermittent-crashes-with-vs-2010.aspx
This is weird and i've also faced a similar issue like that. First i add a watch to a class. and when i try to drill to details of class collection, process terminates and debugging stops.
I've figured out that, it is giving stackoverflow error code. Base of the exception was just because of infinite loop.
So i re-checked all collections twice to find the property that causes a loop. like
int a {get {return MethodThatAlsoReturnsA();}
hope it helps s.o.

Whenever i try to debug new dot net core application, dotnet.exe crashes immediately and not able to debug my application. I am getting following detail in output window:
The program '[4220] dotnet.exe' has exited with code -2147450750 (0x80008082).
The program '[3468] iisexpress.exe' has exited with code 0 (0x0).
Error code 0x80008082 is for CoreHostLibLoadFailure based on what i have searched on internet but not able to found something which provides detail about how to solve this problem. I need help to solve this problem.
Not sure whether solution will work for everyone but i am able to resolve issue by installing update KB2533623. I have windows 7 SP1 32 bit installed my PC.
When I debugging in VS2013 update3, msvsmon.exe crashed when hit at a breakpoint.
It shows "The debugger's worker process (msvsmon.exe) unexpectedly exited. Debugging will be aborted".
I'm not using remote debug.
Is it possible to shut down the msvsmon.exe to avoid calling it when debugging ?
Deleting all of the breakpoints solves the problem when I hit this error. Disabling the breakpoints was not enough - they had to be deleted.
I was able to attach to a process numerous times. Once I added a conditional breakpoint (with a few checks), I started getting this error when attempting to attach to that same process.
The error provided in the question is one problem. I also received an error stating that a debugger was already attached when I tried again. Either way, deleting breakpoints solved it.
Try turning on Options > Debugging > General > "Use Managed Compatibility Mode"
I got this error/crash too while debugging and trying to inspect a variable with 50 MB of text data in it. This option worked in both VS2013 and in VS2015 to allow me to debug and inspect the variable with large data.
A couple of things that worked for me:
Try Closing VStudio and relaunching.
If not, reboot helps.[I know thats generic, but its worth a shot]
Disable unnecessary break points.
I had this error also, and I too have Astrill installed. Completely uninstalling Astrill fixed the issue.
I reached out to Astrill support, and they answered (within 2 hours) saying the correct fix is to hold Ctrl and press the "Help" button on the Astrill application, and then choose "Uninstall LSP". This has fixed the issue without needing to un-install Astrill.
I don't know what LSP is, but I presume it's some sort of proxy.
In my case, it was caused by a VPN software. It changed my hosts file and my localhost was not 127.0.0.1 anymore.
So check your localhost in the hosts file (e. g. %WINDIR%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts) and make sure it is 127.0.0.1.
This error just occurred for me with visual studio 2015 RTM. Deleting all the breakpoints resolved the "The debugger's worker process (msvsmon.exe) unexpectedly exited. Debugging will be aborted" condition.
So If you clear all your breakpoints, in your version, you will not need to avoid using MSVSMON.exe.
I was using the OzCode debugger extension. Unfortunately they don't have a way to completely disable the extension - you can only disable certain features - so I had to completely uninstall it to confirm it was what was contributing to the crashes.
I got the same error. No effect after deleting all breakpoints and repairing Visual Studio (I have 2013 Community Edition). The problem was the Bitdefender software. I have Bitdefender Internet Security 2016 and had set Active Thread Control (Modules->Antivirus) to Normal level. But after setting this settings to Permissive the error doesn't show up anymore.
This error occured to me, when I tried to debug with Visual Studio / Service Pack 3, when Service Pack 4 was already released. After updating to the Service Pack 4 I was able to debug.
So, try installing the newest version of Visual Studio
Regards
This (or something that manifests in exactly the same way) is still an issue in VS2017. In my case it was caused by a dependency being too large to debug. The dependency in question was a generated client for a large REST API. I was able to debug again after slimming down that dependency.
Here's yet another answer: I changed my project from "Platform Target: Any CPU" to "Platform Target: x86". Went from needing about 5 attempts to debug to working every single time.
I had previously tried every suggestion in this thread: I reinstalled, I killed all breakpoints, and looked for fishy software interactions.
I started getting this exact error today in my VS2019 project. Attempting to expand/inspect simple data structs in VS debugger would make it freeze for a minute and then I'd get that "The debugger's worker process (msvsmon.exe) unexpectedly exited. Debugging will be aborted" message:
If I add msvsmon.exe process to windows defender exclusions list, then the problem disappears.
I hit this in Visual Studio 2019 (16.4.3) (C++) with a cause that I have not seen mentioned: I had accidentally added a Watch with incorrect syntax that was attempting to instantiate a singleton rather than returning the existing instance.
Repeatedly choosing right click > Clear All in the Watches view while debugging fixed the issue.
Fixed by changing Options->Projects and Solutions->Web Projects -> Use 64bit version of IIS......... to False.
In my case i am using the wcf Service on the wpf application and inputting parameters from here.The Wpf Application Execution on Facing this error "The debugger's worker process (msvsmon.exe) unexpectedly exited. Debugging will be aborted".
That case i am hosing the Wcf service and run the wpf application exe
In this type of Execution on I didn't Facing any Error like -- "The debugger's worker process (msvsmon.exe) unexpectedly exited. Debugging will be aborted"
please,try this proceed error solved because some execution process didn't supporting the debugging..... we are removing the Debuggers on also we face same error.
that case on helped this process.......
I just experience this with VC2017 Community Edition 15.7.2. Turning off the Microsoft Symbol Server lookup while debugging fixed it for me.
I've just had the problem in VS 2015. I hadn't noticed that one of my breakpoints was bogus - I had inadvertently pressed F9 to set a breakpoint when the disassembly window was showing in the previous debugging session. The solution was simply to delete that one bogus breakpoint - I got to keep all my others.
I tried almost every answer in here, but for my case, nothing worked.
Switching to 32-bit just made Visual Studio 2019 crash instead of msvsmon.exe crashing.
What did work for me is to set a very early breakpoint and use that opportunity to close the "Parallel Stacks" window. I didn't need that anyway, but it was open by default in my layout.
In my case, I had this error when I had the "Locals" tab opened during debugging and hitting a breakpoint. For some reason VS might've been unable to display one of the local variables. The error disappeared when switched to a different tab before hitting the breakpoint where the error was occurring.
My problems started after moving a project to a new folder. I wasn't having any luck with any of these answers using VS2019. I even deleted the entire .vs folder thinking maybe something got corrupted. No luck.
But on a whim I tried starting the project with CTRL-F5 instead of just F5 and that actually worked. It's consistent. CTRL-F5 runs fine. F5 gives me the msvsmon.exe error.
I have no idea what's going on, but at least I can get the project to run again.
This problem is at least 1 1/2 years old maybe more. Today is 6-11-22 and I have the problem in Ms Studio Pro 2022 with a fresh install of windows 11 not much of anything else in the computer. Then I uninstalled it and install Ms Studio Community 2022 put in 1 breakpoint at the beginning and I got the error.
Today 6-12-22 I reinstall Ms Studio Community 2022. For some reason I switch from x86 to x64 went through a about 1000 changes of errors and a crashed form1.resx file thank goodness for a backup I had or I'd be done again. anyways so far have several break points with no problems.
I deleted all my watch variables. That fixed the problem for me.
I know it doesn't directly address the error, but as a workaround, I'm using the Rider IDE from JetBrains, and am not encountering the error (code, system, etc. the same).
Visual Studio version: Professional 2017, 15.5.4
Rider version: 2017.3
None of the other answers worked for me, when I encountered this error. If you are not actually remotely debugging, you can use another editor until you figure out the problem or it resolves itself (the latter was the case for me).
Whenever I try to debug a Visual Studio 2010 web project, VS hangs, and ultimately crashes. This happens if I try to start the project using F5, or through Attach to Process, before the process list even appears.
Hitting F5 in, for example, a Windows Form project works fine, but attach to process fails here too.
Any ideas on what can be causing this? Obviously attaching to the devenv.exe process won't work as I can't get the Attach to Process dialog to appear...
Oh, running W7 (x64), VS2010 SP1 (had same problems without SP1)
In Solution Explorer there is a Show All Files icon (highlighted in the photo below):
Make sure it's turned off,
When It's turned on, Visual Studio tries to index all the files in the solution and if you have a giant Solution it could take forever!
I hope this has helped someone :)
Have you recently installed Mono and/or Mono Tools for VS2010?
I found that to be the problem it my case. Not sure why, but it somehow got in the way.
Matthew
In my case hangs when executable type was not correctly set, ex. Managed v4.0 and trying to attach to Native.
I've been running Visual Studio 2010 (the official release) for some time now. Lately, VS will crash 10+ times during my 8 hour work day. In VS2008, crashes were common when working with large Xaml files, and while I experience some of that with VS2010, crashes occur when debugging, starting the debugger, stopping the debugger, and other random times when editing code.
I've looked through the problem reports, and the one I've found that occurs most frequently is:
Description
Faulting Application Path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe
Problem signature
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: devenv.exe
Application Version: 10.0.30319.1
Application Timestamp: 4ba1fab3
Fault Module Name: ntdll.dll
Fault Module Version: 6.1.7600.16385
Fault Module Timestamp: 4a5bdb3b
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 0002e23e
I'm running Windows 7 (x64). Hoepfully someone has come across this problem and has found a solution. I plan on reinstalling VS2010. Hopefully that takes care of the problem.
Do you think you have installed any extra Extensions which might lead to frequent crashes?
You can try
Devenv.exe /SafeMode
to start in Safe mode. You can also try
Devenv.exe /Log
Which will log all activity. Have not tried this so don't know What activities are logged.
Visual Studio 2010 Command Line Switches
I was having a similar problem and this helped me
http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/618802/visual-studio-random-frequent-crash
Running this from the command prompt seemed to fix it. It hasn't crashed for the whole day today.
regsvr32 c:\Windows\System32\ole32.dll
I had similar issues with Visual Studio. The problem was the service pack which for some reason was not installed properly.
I had to reapply the SP1 using the Repair / reapply option. This kind of fixed my issue.
Also make sure to reboot the system.
Just to help people who search it: It was webex instant messenger related part, but not Cisco itself. The cause was a component in Studio Power Tools relevant to integration with messenger. Reinstall power tools but without messaging integration.
In other occasion it is almost always a corporate antivirus authentication helper thing. It required to manually remove registry entries which cause background TFS logins break the studio at random moments.
I had the "Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 has stopped working" error, imediately when Visual Studio 2010 was starting. Fault module was clr.dll in my case. Only rebooting helped sometimes.
I solved it by removing .NET completely and reinstalling it.
Be aware that if you updated to .NET 4.5 this includes .NET 4, so you have to remove and reinstall .NET 4.5
I know why it could be crashing. Code it self. Have you tried to debug the failed instance of VS2010 with Vs2010? If the xaml designer crashed anywhere in your code you should be able to see the stack trace. Also, try to load the same xaml into Blend 4 and then run the vs2010 on Blend when that crashes. I've had some good results debugging Vs2010 crashes like that.
There are so many things that can cause studio to crash.
I'd look at everything from video card drivers to whether the RAM is stable.
Note, there is a microsoft connect but on this exact issue at: http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/634162/devenv-exe-frequent-intermittent-crashes-fault-module-name-ntdll-dll
You might vote on it or add your own information to the report but the very first thing I'd do is update my video drivers. One place I was at had a lot of issues with 2005; it would randomly crash just displaying the design surface or when opening a few too many code files; but once we got decent video cards and the appropriate drivers installed it worked flawlessly.
I disabled “Options"-"Evnironment"-"Add-in/Micros Security"->"Allow macros to run", and fixed the problem.
I think I just solved a similar issue on my computer, but probably not the same cause. It was related to TortoiseSVN (I think visual loads the tortoise DLL because it is integrated with the explorer, even if I don't have a specific visual studio plug-in). I upgraded TortoiseSVN (from 1.7.8 to 1.7.11) and it didn't crash for a few hours (I also had a 100% repro case when closing visual studio which does not happen anymore). Maybe there is some way to check what DLLs are loaded by visual studio to troubleshoot what are the candidates for upgrading/uninstalling, but I didn't go this far.
Hope it can help someone else.
While developing C++ code, Visual Studio 2010 started crashing frequently and at random times after I enabled the Task List.
As an alternative to using the Task List, I am now simply using the Find in Files tool (Ctrl+Shift+F) and searching for the string TODO as an alternative.
i was having a similar problem. visual studio 2010 was crashing. when i attached, it said it had a read access violation in ntdll.dll
closed all my open instances (there were 5) and it stopped happening.
Today I had this error, in my case it was because Microsoft released the update (KB2858725) the FrameWork 4.5.1, which the download and installed,
However this is definitely addressed by performing the following steps:
FrameWork 4.5.1 download (KB2858728) => NDP451-KB2858728-x86-x64-ENU.exe-Allos
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40779
Install the downloaded software (KB2858728)
Try Vs, but give the same error.
Uninstall the downloaded software (KB2858728)
(this task fully cleaned upgrade giving problems (KB2858725)
Install the downloaded software (KB2858728) again
Try Vs, this time if it will work
NOTE: NEVER! install update (KB2858725)
Logging helps indeed. I have the same problem with crashes. Since there could be numerous reasons and lots of log data, I wrote this .bat (Win7 x64, VS2010 Express) to keep logs organized and easy to analyze:
#echo off
rem date and time in format YYYYMonDD_hhmmss
set year=%DATE:~-4%
set month=%DATE:~3,2%
set day=%DATE:~0,2%
IF %month%==01 set monthstr=Jan
IF %month%==02 set monthstr=Feb
IF %month%==03 set monthstr=Mar
IF %month%==04 set monthstr=Apr

IF %month%==08 set monthstr=Aug
IF %month%==09 set monthstr=Sep
IF %month%==10 set monthstr=Oct
IF %month%==11 set monthstr=Nov
IF %month%==12 set monthstr=Dec
set now=%TIME:~0,-3%
set now=%now::=%
set now=%now: =0%
set now=%year%%monthstr%%day%_%now%
start "VS2010 express" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\VCExpress.exe" /Log "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\VSlogs\VS_log_%now%.txt"
I had the same problem. I cleared my settings. Configured environment to use C# development settings. Then i disabled all extensions against which disable button was present. I enabled them one by one while opening, running and closing solutions. I found the offending extension to be .Net reflector v 8.5.0.179 by red gate. I had VS2010, VS2012 and VS2013 all installed on my windows 8.1 enterprise 64bit. All of them had the same issue. Whenever i closed the solution VS would crash. Hope it helps.
Occasionally during debugging the debugger skips forward randomly. Sometimes I Step into a function inside of another function and instead of going to the next line it skips through to a seemly random place in the future. sometimes to a line partway through another function.
It always seems to respect breakpoints though, i.e. if a breakpoint is set in the future it never will skip past it.
I'm running 64 bit Win 7 and visual studio 2010 ultimate. I'm not using threads. This never happened for me in visual studio 2008. How can I fix this?
Do you have optimizations turned on? If the program is highly optimized, the order of execution can be thrown off, and things can be expanded or rearranged in ways that are not always clear.
I'm running into similar problems debugging a C# program with Visual Studio 2010 on an XP machine. The debugger just randomly skips to some other line or the next break point.
It seems that Microsoft has released a Fix for this in the SP1.
Are you sure that the assembly your code calls has debug symbols? You maybe referencing a dll that was compiled in release mode.
This can happen when the debugger is running against pdb files that don't match the source code you are looking at. Make sure the bin (or where you are running from) is up to date and was built from the same source code you are running in the debugger.
Are you using threads or background workers? When debugging I believe that all threads are paused so it could be switching between them. Otherwise you may have out of date debugging information, Delete your bin and obj directories and do a clean build.
This can also happen when your Debug solution configuration is up to date, but you try to debug the program in Release configuration (if that is not also up-to-date)... or vice versa.
You can switch back and forth between running in Debug or Release configuration using the drop-down next to the green 'play' arrow at the top of the screen.
I had a similar problem in Visual C++ 2008 on Windows 7 32-bit recently. Several minutes before the problem first appeared, a system dialog window “VC.exe encountered a problem and needs to quit” was displayed but the Visual C++ window seemed to survive.
After the problem first appeared, I tried several ways to getting it back to work like rebuilding the solution or restarting Visual Studio. However, it continued to behave strange: It failed to link with an object file I hadn’t touched for weeks, displayed “The breakpoint will not currently be hit. The source code is different from the original version.” etc.
Nothing helped until I rebooted the computer and finally rebuilt the solution (twice, actually).
Click Rebuild Solution.
