Sorting with BlackBerry - sorting

I have a file consisting of entries like Paula 100, Steve 150, Julian 200. I want to sort this.
Can I use the Collections framework in BlackBerry to sort file entries consisting of numbers and names? I can't find any sorting program for blackberry. So I am wondering if I can use Collections.sort()?

Unfortunately, BlackBerry uses J2ME which doesn't include the Collections framework. However, you can still do sorting of Arrays using the Arrays class.

There are sortable collections in the BlackBerry API that you can use. Search the JavaDocs for things like SimpleSortingVector and BigVector.

Yes, you can use it. It's not specifically a Blackberry thing; it's just generic Java.
You may wish to use the version that takes a Comparator, and implement that interface so that it orders your list items in the way you wish to sort them.

Whats the best way to include static information in my app?

I am currently working on my first small desktop menubar app (macOS, Swift 3). It needs to access
a) A list of words (Think word dictionary, 1k-5k words, per supported language)
b) A list of structured data (Think simple structs, ~500)
I am currently pondering, whether to build these in code - maybe a factory class per language. Or include them in my app as json and parse at runtime. Or maybe build an SQLite file and read that during runtime, although that approach would be harder to diff in source control ...
As I am new to the platform I was wondering whether there might be a better way that I am not aware of, or maybe performance considerations that render one of the mentioned approaches useless.

Your listed solutions can be used for this task. However I think for such kind of tasks the best solution is to use CoreData, where you can store a list of words as well as structured data, also make relations between them if you need it

How can I query kendo trees and MVVM models?

According to the docs I should be able to do this ...

Great if i want to expand everything, but what if i only want to expand nodes where the property "expanded" in my model items is set to true?
Is there a way i can query the tree based on something in the model then perform an action on all results?
The real answer here is quite long, the short version being as with everything kendo, spend hours with support to be given half the solution and told to write the rest yourself.
I got round this problem by using another library (jslinq) to query the model data.
This is yet another frustrating issue with kendo that really should at the very least be offered as a core part of the heirarchy data source at some basic level (essentially an incomplete implementation).

a simple filtering language that can be embedded in ruby?

I have a ruby project where part of the operation is to select entities given user-specified constraints. So far, I've been hacking my own filter language, using regular expressions and specifying inclusion/exclusion based on the fields in the entities.
If you are interested in my current approach, here's an example: For instance, given this list of entities:
[{"type":"dog", "name":"joe"}, {"type":"dog", "name":"fuzz"}, {"type":"cat", "name":"meow"}]
A user could specify a filter like so:

Would match all dogs but exclude fuzz.
This is sort of working now. However, I am starting to require more sophisticated selection parameters. I am thinking that rather than continuing to hack on my own filter language, there might be a more general-purpose filter language I can just embed in my application? For instance, is there a parser that can in-app filter using a SQL where clause? Or are there some other general, simple filter languages that I'm not aware of? I would especially like to move away from regexps since I want to do range querying on numbers (like is entity["size"] < 50 ?)
It is a little bit of an extrapolation, but I think you may be looking for a search engine, or at least enough of one that you may as well use one just for the query language.
If so you might want to look at elasticsearch which does have Ruby client bindings, and could be a good fit for what you are trying to do. Especially if you want or need to express the data you want to search as JSON for use by client code, as that format is natively supported by the search engine.
The query language is quite expressive, and there are a variety of built-in and plugin tools available to explore and use it.
in the end, i ended up implementing a ruby dsl. it's easy, fun, and powerful.

Can Groups be used to emulate the "class" or "struct" data structures from other languages

Is there a data structure within LiveCode that can be used as a "holder" for associated data, letting me handle it collectively? I come from a Java / Javascript / C background so I am looking for a Class or Struct sort of data structure.
I've found examples of Groups, which seem to have some of this functionality, but it feels a bit like I'm bending the language to meet my needs.
As a specific example, suppose I had an image field on my screen that would randomly display an image and, when pressed, play an associated sound clip. I'd expect to create a list of "structures" that contained the path to the image and the path to the associated sound clip, and use that data to populate the image field and to decide what sound clip to play.
Would a Group be the correct structure to use in this case? Or am I approaching this in a way that isn't really fitting with the way LiveCode works?
It takes a little getting used to, but the xTalk world is much simpler and more open than any ordinary procedural language. So much of what you once had to manage is no longer required.
So when splash21 said that you could store all your image and sound references in a custom property, he was really saying that the LiveCode environment contains intrinsic, high level functionality that makes these sorts of things instantly accessible, and the only thing required of you is to call for them, and they simply work.
The only way to appreciate this is to make a few simple programs, to really see what is possible. Make your application. Everything you mentioned can be accomplished with perhaps a dozen lines of code in a single handler. I recommend that you join the LiveCode use list and forums. The community is vibrant and eager to help, frequently with full blown solutions to specific problems, but more importantly, as guides and mentors to new users

Arrays in LiveCode are actually associative arrays (like hash maps). A key is associated with a value. The value might be as well an array.
Chapter 5.5.7 of the User's Guide says
Array elements may contain nested or sub-elements, making them multi-dimensional.
This type of array is ideal for processing hierarchical data structures such as trees or
XML. To access a sub-element, simply declare it using an additional set of square
brackets.

Dave- I'm hoping to get a struct-like container implemented in the near future. Meanwhile you can, as splash21 mentioned, use custom properties (or better yet, custom property sets) to do what you want. This will give you a pseudo-struct for each object and you can implement the file and sound specifications into the properties. And if you use that in conjunction with a behavior object you'll end up very close to a real inheritable class formation.

Custom Data Detectors in NSTextView (similar to the recognition of dates)

Is there a way to implement custom data detectors in NSTextView (like the one that recognizes dates or telephone numbers)?
I think there is an API Reference, but the whole process is not documented. Is there anything that can help me understand what's the right thing to implement?
The LSM is well suited for training/evaluation/categorization of text (think spam filtering). The LSMSmartCategorizer sample code shows how to train and use a LSM map against news feeds.
You can also try to use the NSRegularExpression/NSDataDetector classes (available starting with Lion). They are designed to match on a text input. Once the matches are available, iterate (with a custom block) over the result and perform some highlighting or style modification.
