I would like to create a possible value for a specific picklist on CRM4.
I can see that the possible values are located in the stringmap table. My question is about how to properly add another record. The objecttypecode (10063) and attributename (assessmenttype) already exist - I simply need to add a new option to the picklist.
Of course, not wanting to void our support, I cannot just add the record to the table.
I have exported the xml configuration of this entity, and I can see the picklist values in this file under the "options" node of the picklist attribute node. I have imported this customization but it clearly is not all that needs to be done - my new values are neither in the stringmap table or visible on the form. what else needs to be done?
You need to use the metadata web service to make these updates. Check out http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd904037.aspx for a walkthrough of how to create picklists. You'll also want to look at the UpdateAttributeRequest class.

I'm basically trying to create a primary ID between CRM and QuickBooks. Figured I'd just use the existing PK in CRM for the lookup. I'd like the PK to visible to the user, but not editable in CRM.
This has presented several problems in that you can't do that out of the box. I thought I read somewhere you could either via business rule or calculated field, but I haven't had luck with that.
It sounds like it would require web resources if I were to go this route.
The other option would be to just generate unique values for every record in Accounts and Contacts.
Does this automatically populate existing records or just new records? How do I get it to populate existing records?
You can use Auto number manager for configuring an auto-number attribute in every entity. This seeds a number based on configured format for new records. Uniqueness assured by SQL sequence feature & no need of any extra plugin/workflow.
For existing records - you can design a workflow along with a temp entity to assign auto-number. Read more.
Otherwise you can use SSIS + Kingswaysoft package to generate auto-number & assign for existing records.
I am suggesting you to create a new text field on the entity and create a pre plugin that will get the record primary GUID id from context and will set this GUID into the newly added attribute. You can set this field as read-only of form as well.
OR you can generate new GUID as well into the plugin.
Let me describe my problem:
I have a table for all my IT-Services. I reference to this table more than once, for different purposes. Most of the time I need to reference to the name of the service. That's why I keep the name as displayed value.
One Column of that table is a service_id (custom field) which is for example "Service_004". Now in a catalog request Item the User has to fill in the service_id in a reference field.
But since I have the name as displayed value, and I need it in other forms, I am unable to reference to the service_id.
Using the variable attributes field I managed to let the service be found using the autocomplete function. But in the reference field I still get the servicename. I know that I can change the display value in the dictionary, but this breaks other functions. So what I need is to change the display value just for one reference field.
Also I tried to create a new table called IT-Services2 with reference to my table IT-Services. Then I switched the display to true in the new table for my service_id, but this will even change it in the parent table.
Perhaps an onChange client script utilizing g_form.setLabelOf() ?

Maybe I'm not fully understanding your question...
I ran into this issue before, what you can do is create select box variable and use an on load client script to populate the list with the service_id(s) from the table you are referencing.
I would write a script include to pull the data from the table and call it from the client script via GlideAjax.
In Dynamics CRM 2016 (on-prem), I've custom child entity Partiesthat have a look of type order. Currently it is working properly and it is showing order name but I want it to show Order ID.
I tried to resolve by creating my own view, adding order id field only and making it default view for the look up but it don't meet my requirements.
This is controlled by the lookup view for Orders. The first three fields in the lookup view are shown when selecting records from the lookup field.
You cannot change the position of (or remove) the Name field from the lookup view. That still leaves you with two additional fields to be shown, one of which could be the Order ID.
I know no supported ways around this (except creating a workflow to copy the Order ID to the Name field and adding a custom name field instead, if you really insist).
Changing what appears on the form after you make a selection in a lookup field is not possible, unfortunately. The primary attribute is always what gets displayed after a user specifies a lookup value (which, for the Order entity, is the Name attribute). As Henrik's answer mentions, people commonly get around this by copying the value they want to see into the primary attribute using a workflow or a plugin.
I am creating a new Joomla Component. I am able to create custom fields for the component backend forms - but I am not able to create Dynamic Custom Fields.
What I would like to do is have a field that is dynamical populated based on the value of a previous field. The easiest way to explain this is the simple country, state, city breakdown.
Field 1 = Country
Field 2 = State (Based on what the user selected as as Country in Field 1)
Field 3 = City (Based on what the user selected as State in Field 2)
The fields would of course need to be refreshed, reset as the user picks a different country etc.
The data to populate the fields would also all need to come from a database based on the previous fields value.
I am guessing this needs to be done via ajax or javascript or something? But wondering if there is an official way? Especially since there are database calls involved.
Please let me know if there is anything I can explain better..

I ended up just creating text fields but then validating the input to make sure the values added are correct.
Is there a way of updating the Option Set options for the Marketing List Member Type to reflect an entity display name change? i.e. if the account entity has been renamed to organisation, is there a supported way of reflecting this in the displayed options? I have been able to achieve this using javascript, but wondered if there was a better way of achieving this? At the moment I am unable to change the descriptions of the current options: Account, Contact or Lead.
Simple solution..
Create a Solution in your crm org. Add Marketing list to it.
Export the translations from the solution and when you open the translation excel file you will see all 3 picklist values.
from there you can change the values.
If you have to rename an existing entity, you should also rename its 'messages'.
You will find them in the customization area. Open the entity account. There you will find 'messages'. These are the strings which are used for the entity.
For a complete renaming, you have to replace the term 'account' in these messages.
It's just a normal Option Set on the Marketing List entity called "createdfromcode" which has three options (Account, Contact, Lead) and the underlying values match the entity type codes (1,2,4).
You can't edit this option set directly, but you could set up your own with appropriate values and the labels you want to use, add that option set to the form and use javascript to copy the selected value into the existing field (which you keep on the form but not visible).
