I use Ubuntu and am trying to write a script that makes the following:
-test if an audio stream works
-if not, send an email.
I have tried the following code (running as a cron job every 10 minutes), which 'works' if I supply the wrong pw e.g.(it sends an email then), but does nothing if the actual server is down (tested by killing the server). any ideas on how to fix the script?

Your problem is in this line:
$mailfile="downmail.txt"
remove the dollar sign and that should do it.
You should be getting error messages in your cron log or emails to the crontab owner complaining about a command not found or no such file.
Edit:
Does your script work if run from the command line (with the stream down) rather than cron?
Try using set -x (or #!/bin/bash -x) in the script to turn on tracing or use echo "PID: $$, value of \$test: $test" > /tmp/script.out after the assignment to see if you're getting the zero you're expecting.
Also, try an ssmtp command outside the if to make sure it's working (but I think you already said it is under some circumstances).
Try your script without ever starting mplayer.

expect: launching scp after sftp

I could really use some help. I'm still pretty new with expect. I need to launch a scp command directly after I run sftp.
I got the first portion of this script working, my main concern is the bottom portion. I really need to launch a command after this command completes. I'd rather be able to spawn another command than, hack something up like piping this with a sleep command and running it after 10 s or something weird.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

So i figured out I can actually get this to launch the subprocess if I use "exec" instead of spawn.. in other words:
exec scp somefile user2#host2:/home/user2/
the only problem? It prompts me for a password! This shouldn't happen, I already have the ssh-keys installed on both systems. (In other words, if I run the scp command from the host I'm running this expect script on, it will run without prompting me for a password). The system I'm trying to scp to, must be recognizing this newly spawned process as a new host, because its not picking up my ssh-key. Any ideas?
BTW, I apologize I haven't actually posted a "working" script, I can't really do that without comprimising the security of this server. I hope that doesn't detract from anyones ability to assist me.
I think the problem lies with me not terminating the initially spawned process. I don't understand expect enough to do it properly. If I try "close" or "eof", it simply kills the entire script, which I don't want to do just yet (because I still need to scp the file to the second host).
Ensure that your SSH private key is loaded into an agent, and that the environment variables pointing to that agent are active in the session where you're calling scp.

As an aside, I'd strongly suggest replacing the code given in the question with something like the following:
lftp -u user,123 -e 'get /mydir/somefile -o localfile' sftp://host </dev/null
lftp scp://user2#host2 -e 'put localfile -o /home/user2/somefile' </dev/null
Each connection handled in one line, and no silliness messing around with expect.

Can Cron Jobs Use Gnome-Open?

I am running Ubuntu 11.10 (Unity interface) and I created a Bash script that uses 'gnome-open' to open a series of web pages I use every morning. When I manually execute the script in the Terminal, the bash script works just fine. Here's a sample of the script (it's all the same so I've shortened it):

Since it seemed to be working well, I added a job to my crontab (mine, not root's) to execute every weekday at a specific time.
Here's the crontab entry:
30 10 * * 1,2,3,4,5 ~/bin/webcheck.sh
The problem is this error gets returned for every single 'gnome-open' command in the bash script:
GConf-WARNING **: Client failed to connect to the D-BUS daemon:
Unable to autolaunch a dbus-daemon without a $DISPLAY for X11
GConf Error: No D-BUS daemon running
Error: no display specified
I did some searching to try and figure this out. The first thing I tried was relaunching the daemon using SIGHUP:
killall -s SIGHUP gconfd-2
That didn't work so I tried launching the dbus-daemon using this code from the manpage for dbus-launch:

Any ideas on how I can get this up and running?
Here is how the problem was solved. It turns out the issue was primarily caused by Bash not having access to an X window session (or at least that's how I understood it). So my problem was solved by editing my crontab like so:
30 10 * * 1,2,3,4,5 export DISPLAY=:0 && ~/bin/webcheck.sh
The "export DISPLAY=:0" statement told cron which display to use. I found the answer on this archived Ubuntu forum after searching for "no display specified" or something like that:

So now, whenever I'm logged in, exactly at 10:30 my system will automatically launch a series of webpages that I need to look at every day. Saves me having to go through the arduous process of typing in my three-letter alias every time :)

It depends on when it is run.
If the Gnome GDM Greeter is live, you can use the DBUS session from the logon dialog, if you will. You can, e.g., use this to send notifications to the logon screen, if no-one is logged in:

Shell script that continuously checks a text file for log data and then runs a program

I have a java program that stops often due to errors which is logged in a .log file. What can be a simple shell script to detect a particular text in the last/latest line say
[INFO] Stream closed
and then run the following command
java -jar xyz.jar
This should keep on happening forever(possibly after every two minutes or so) because xyz.jar writes the log file.
The text stream closed can arrive a lot of times in the log file. I just want it to take an action when it comes in the last line.
How about

There may be condition where the tailed last log "Stream Closed" is not the real last log and the process is still logging the messages. We can avoid this condition by checking if the process is alive or not. If the process exited and the last log is "Stream Closed" then we need to restart the application.

I would prefer checking whether the corresponding process is still running and restart the program on that event. There might be other errors that cause the process to stop. You can use a cronjob to periodically (like every minute) perform such a check.
Also, you might want to improve your java code so that it does not crash that often (if you have access to the code).
i solved this using a watchdog script that checks directly (grep) if program(s) is(are) running. by calling watchdog every minute (from cron under ubuntu), i basically guarantee (programs and environment are VERY stable) that no program will stay offline for more than 59 seconds.
this script will check a list of programs using the name in an array and see if each one is running, and, in case not, start it.

i do not use the log verification, though you could easily incorporate that into your own version (just change grep for log check, for example).
if you run it from command line (or putty, if you are remotely connected), you will see what was working and what wasnt. have been using it for months now without a hiccup. just call it whenever you want to see what's working (regardless of it running under cron).
you could also place all your critical programs in one folder, do a directory list and check if every file in that folder has a program running under the same name. or read a txt file line by line, with every line correspoding to a program that is supposed to be running. etcetcetc
A good way is to use the awk command:
tail -f somelog.log | awk '/.*[INFO] Stream Closed.*/ { system("java -jar xyz.jar") }'
This continually monitors the log stream and when the regular expression matches its fires off whatever system command you have set, which is anything you would type into a shell.
If you really wanna be good you can put that line into a .sh file and run that .sh file from a process monitoring daemon like upstart to ensure that it never dies.

starting remote script via ssh containing nohup

I want to start a script remotely via ssh like this:
ssh user#remote.org -t 'cd my/dir && ./myscript data my#email.com'
The script does various things which work fine until it comes to a line with nohup:
nohup time ./myprog $1 >my.log && mutt -a ${1%.*}/`basename $1` -a ${1%.*}/`basename ${1%.*}`.plt $2 < my.log 2>&1 &
it is supposed to do start the program myprog, pipe its output to mylog and send an email with some datafiles created by myprog as attachment and the log as body. Though when the script reaches this line, ssh outputs:
Connection to remote.org closed.
What is the problem here?

Your command runs a pipeline of processes in the background, so the calling script will exit straight away (or very soon afterwards). This will cause ssh to close the connection. That in turn will cause a SIGHUP to be sent to any process attached to the terminal that the -t option caused to be created.
Your time ./myprog process is protected by a nohup, so it should carry on running. But your mutt isn't, and that is likely to be the issue here. I suggest you change your command line to:
nohup sh -c "time ./myprog $1 >my.log && mutt -a ${1%.*}/`basename $1` -a ${1%.*}/`basename ${1%.*}`.plt $2 < my.log 2>&1 " &
so the entire pipeline gets protected. (If that doesn't fix it it may be necessary to do something with file descriptors - for instance mutt may have other issues with the terminal not being around - or the quoting may need tweaking depending on the parameters - but give that a try for now...)
This answer may be helpful. In summary, to achieve the desired effect, you have to do the following things:
Redirect all I/O on the remote nohup'ed command
Tell your local SSH command to exit as soon as it's done starting the remote process(es).
Quoting the answer I already mentioned, in turn quoting wikipedia:
Nohuping backgrounded jobs is for example useful when logged in via SSH, since backgrounded jobs can cause the shell to hang on logout due to a race condition [2]. This problem can also be overcome by redirecting all three I/O streams:

Managed to solve this for a use case where I need to start backgrounded scripts remotely via ssh using a technique similar to other answers here, but in a way I feel is more simple and clean (at least, it makes my code shorter and -- I believe -- better-looking), by explicitly closing all three streams using the stream-close redirection syntax (as discussed at the following locations:

Rather than the more widely used but (IMHO) hackier "redirect to/from /dev/null", resulting in the deceptively simple:
nohup script.sh >&- 2>&- <&-&
2>&1 works just as well as 2>&-, but I feel the latter is ever-so-slightly more clear. ;) Most people might have a space preceding the final "background job" ampersand, but since it is not required (as the ampersand itself functions like a semicolon in normal usage), I prefer to omit it. :)

Can a bash script tell if it's being run via cron?

Not having much luck Googling this question and I thought about posting it on SF, but it actually seems like a development question. If not, please feel free to migrate.
So, I have a script that runs via cron every morning at about 3 am. I also run the same scripts manually sometimes. The problem is that every time I run my script manually and it fails, it sends me an e-mail; even though I can look at the output and view the error in the console.
Is there a way for the bash script to tell that it's being run through cron (perhaps by using whoami) and only send the e-mail if so? I'd love to stop receiving emails when I'm doing my testing...
you can try "tty" to see if it's run by a terminal or not. that won't tell you that it's specifically run by cron, but you can tell if its "not a user as a prompt".
you can also get your parent-pid and follow it up the tree to look for cron, though that's a little heavy-handed.
I had a similar issue. I solved it with checking if stdout was a TTY. This is a check to see if you script runs in interactive mode:

The -t test return true if file descriptor is open and refers to a terminal. '1' is stdout.
Here's two different options for you:
Take the emailing out of your script/program and let cron handle it. If you set the MAILTO variable in your crontab, cron will send anything printed out to that email address. eg:

Set an environment variable in your crontab that is used to determine if running under cron. eg:

Why not have a command line argument that is -t for testing or -c for cron.

I know the question is old, but I just came across the same problem. This was my solution:

Note: This solution only works specifically for cron, unlike some of the other solutions, which work anytime the script is being run non-interactively.
What works for me is to check $TERM. Under cron it's "dumb" but under a shell it's something else. Use the set command in your terminal, then in a cron-script and check it out

I'd like to suggest a new answer to this highly-voted question. This works only on systemd systems with loginctl (e.g. Ubuntu 14.10+, RHEL/CentOS 7+) but is able to give a much more authoritative answer than previously presented solutions.

To summarize: when used with systemd, crond (like sshd and others) creates a new session when it starts a job for a user. This session has an ID that is unique for the entire uptime of the machine. Each session has some properties, one of which is the name of the service that started it. loginctl can tell us the value of this property, which will be "crond" if and only if the session was actually started by crond.
Advantages over using environment variables:
No need to modify cron entries to add special invocations or environment variables
No possibility of an intermediate process modifying environment variables to create a false positive or false negative
Advantages over testing for tty:
No false positives in pipelines, startup scripts, etc
Advantages over checking the process tree:
No false positives from processes that also have crond in their name
No false negatives if the script is disowned
Many of the commands used in prior posts are not available on every system (pstree, loginctl, tty). This was the only thing that worked for me on a ten years old BusyBox/OpenWrt router that I'm currently using as a blacklist DNS server. It runs a script with an auto-update feature. Running from crontab, it sends an email out.

In an interactive shell the $TERM-variable returns the value vt102 for me. I included the check for "dumb" since #edoceo mentioned it worked for him. I didn't use '==' since it's not completely portable.
I also liked the idea from Tal, but also see the risk of having undefined returns. I ended up with a slightly modified version, which seems to work very smooth in my opinion:

So you can check for $CRON being 1 or 0 at any time.
