I have an extension installed in VS 2010 but there is no option to uninstall it from extension manager or add/remove programs (if it was in an msi, can't remember). Add-in manager gives me the option to disable the extension, but it still comes up when I restart VS2010 (always running in Administrator mode btw). I also looked in my Local folder under VisualStudio/Extensions.
I've checked the registry for entries for this extension, but can't find anything, either. What can I do (except reinstall VS2010)?
Thanks
It has uninstall option in installer. Download it again (using your link) and click uninstall.

After failing to update and launch VS installer, I decided to reinstall Microsoft Visual Studio.
Neither setup.exe nor InstallCleanup.exe worked for me, so I decided to delete all files in the Microsoft Visual Studio folder, leaving nothing but the empty "Installer" folder which cannot be deleted, because apparently it's being used by a program I cannot spot in the task manager. How do I gain access to delete or modify Microsoft Visual Studio\Installer so that I can reinstall VS?
I managed to do it using an app named "lock hunter".
It's a free software found on https://lockhunter.com. after installation it adds an option named "what is locking this file?" when right-clicking any file or folder in a file explorer. It will open a window where all processes using that file are listed, and you can terminate them from there.
Turns out Installcleanup.exe was still trying to clean MSIs, even though it would never finish and was just holding an empty folder hostage. By ending that process I was able to delete "Microsoft Visual Studio\Installer" and reinstall the program, which thankfully worked perfectly this time around.
When I download an extension within Visual Studio 2019 IDE, it downloads successfully and gives a message "changes will be scheduled and that the installs will begin when I close all windows". If I close all the open windows in IDE, nothing happens. Also after a restart, I do not see the extension installed.
changes will be scheduled and that the installs will begin when I
close all windows
To close all windows, try going File menu => Exit to close VS instead of clicking the X button.
Here're some other workarounds I found:
1.Download the extension from VS Marketplace and double-click the xx.vsix file to start installing manually.
2.If the popup doesn't show, find the xx.vsix in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp folder, run it there to install. See this.
Of course these are workarounds, however I can't reproduce same issue in my machine. So I guess maybe something is broken in VS or one unknown process interrupts the installation. I suggest we can make sure we're in Admin permission, run a VS repair(or Update VS to latest 16.3.6), and check if one process like cmd(found one similar issue whose cause is about cmd.exe) by task manager...
Hope all above helps if someone meets similar issue :)
I'm trying to install the latest version of Visual Studio Community 2017, however I'm having a few issues. I downloaded the Visual Studio installer and run it. After trying to go through it, it just shows and empty dialog box with the only option being to close. There's no error or anything, but if I'm not wrong, it should open the window showing which parts of Visual Studio I want to install. Screenshots showing the process:
Anyone have any experience with this? Or am I doing something wrong?
Please follow the steps as below to completely remove the VS 2017:
Go to Control Panel—Programs and Features, right click the ‘Microsoft Visual Studio 2017’ and choose ‘Uninstall’
Try to delete the following installed folders: %ProgramData%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\Packages and %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Community
After that, make sure windows update is up-to-date, clean up the %temp% folder, temporarily disable any antivirus, download the latest installer from Visual Studio Downloads and run it as administrator to install.
If this issue persists, please use http://aka.ms/vscollect to gather the installation logs and find vslogs.zip under the %temp% folder, then upload the file to Onedrive and share the link here.
This is a known issue, we have fix this in the next major Visual Studio update release. (15.4)
The WMI service on your machine was not working (due to pending OS update). The Bootstrapper depends on WMI service and since WMI service is not working correctly, ManagementException is thrown. In 15.4, we have removed the Bootstrapper's dependency on WMI.
If you see this error again, you can try the followings to workaround this issue.
Workaround:
1. Download latest Bootstrapper from https://www.visualstudio.com/downloads/ and run vs_enterprise.exe --passive --update in an admin command console window. (this will force update your VS Installer)
OR
Reboot your machine and follow this instruction to repair WMI:

OR
Make sure your OS is up to date.
thanks for reporting this issue.
toby.
I didn't not install Visual Studio 2015 to the C: (it's my ssd drive and its pretty small). I choose to install VS2015 to G: and G drive has died and most of the files do not exist, such as:
G:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0*
I would like to reinstall, but at this point, when I run the uninstaller, I am unable to repair, modify or uninstall VS2015, it fails with error:
"Cannot continue because some of the required components failed."
I am unable to install VS again, because of the same errors. I looked at a force uninstall, but the files do not exists to force the uninstall.
I really don't want to reinstall windows10. Any other ideas?
In my scenario, I had just performed a user migration from one PC to an AWS instance and was not able to use VS 2015 Enterprise edition upon migration. I attempted to run a repair from "programs and features", run setup.exe from the ISO mounted to a drive on windows and even tried to run it from a disk and I couldn't get anything to run. What I had found was a reg key that led me to an idea of how to repair VS from an internal installer. The reg key that I found was:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall{4983E758-4064-3D74-BB77-75C3F86C34B3}
which provided me with an install source for the currently installed version of visual studio. Within this registry key I found the "InstallSource" portion and followed it's location to other installers and uninstallers for Visual studio and other programs found at this location:
C:\ProgramData\Package Cache{14D1CABE-2B5A-3AED-B3A7-42315D062965}v14.0.23107\packages\enterprisecore
From here I went through each of the folders with a listing for v14.0...etc and was able to find the location for the vs_enterprisecore windows installer. From here I right-clicked the installer and ran a repair(you can choose to install, uninstall, or repair).
vs_enterprisecore functions
This allowed me to repair visual studio and inevitably re-update my licensing information on visual studio. Prior to doing this I was receiving a dialog to sign in and that my license was invalid no matter how many attempts I made at logging in with my enterprise issued MSDN account. As you can see below my VS2015 is operational again with Enterprise 2015 setup and is able to check for an updated key once again! This took alot of work, spent at least 8-12 hours working on this to avoid a complete re-image! I hope this helps someone later on down the road!
Visual Studio (Repaired)
I ended up just reinstalling windows, bummer.
You may have to remove any trace of what is left of it yourself. Even though the files of the installation are gone, the registry entries will still be lingering. You could try CCleaner to clean the registry. Typically when there isn't anything left and you try to uninstall from 'Programs and Features', Windows will ask you if you want to remove it from that list.
You can also use Revo, it has a 30 day trial period. CCleaner used to be free and you can still get the free version or a trial I believe.
Edit:
There are also some free ones that attempt to scan for leftovers:
IoBit Uninstaller, also at: Portable Apps
GeekUninstaller - Portable
Wise Program Uninstaller and Wise Registery Cleaner, - Portable Versions: Downloads Page
I had met with the same problem, while I found the solution after 1 day of research.
If you are seeing the fatal error for Built Tools x86. that's where I stuck with.
First of all, remember your previous version of Visual Studio Installed in your PC. And search for online to download the build tools for the specific version of Visual Studio.
Secondly, install the same and try to uninstall VS2015 with force command in an Admin privileged Cmd prompt.
vs_enterprise.exe /uninstall /force
You could find the above file in my case 'vs_enterprise.exe' from the package cache under ProgramData/PackageCache and respective package version number which you need to explore online. If you couldn't find the above simply uninstall vs2015 from Program and features under Control Panel.
I was using the trial version of VisualSVN until recently. When it expired, my employer purchased a license key which I entered by clicking on Registration on the VisualSVN menu.
However, even after doing this, all of the VisualSVN options are still greyed out, both in the toolbar and the context menu.
I have tried repairing Visual SVN, uninstalling and reinstalling it and repairing Visual Studio 2010, still no joy.
Have I missed a step in setting this up?
I also had trouble with the registration of VisualSVN.
I have tried this method and resolved my problems. Follow these steps.
Uninstall the previous installation of VisualSvn
Search in the registry the path HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VisualSVN and remove it
Search in the registry the path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VisualSVN and remove it
For x64 remove the path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\VisualSVN
Reinstall VisualSvn and register your license
Pay attention. If you have installed VisualSVN Server on the same development machine then, in the paths above, you will find also the info used by VisualSVN Server.
These should not be removed....
As always, when you mess with the registry editor, make a backup copy of everything you touch and be very very careful on what keys press to.
Of course I can't be sure that this resolve your problem, I'd like to know.
