I am trying to populate a JQGrid with LinQ but am having problems in getting a value from a foreign table.
Scenario: I have a Users table and a Country table. I am returning a List from the data layer and binding it to the grid. The values from the users table populate with no problem. My problem is when trying to link a JQGrid column to a column in the Country table, such as Country Name. If I debug the data returned from the data logic, the Country Name is filled in, but I can't find a way to link a JQGrid column to the Name column in the Country table. I tried, with no luck, the following:
<trirand:JQGridColumn DataField="Country.Name"/>
<trirand:JQGridColumn DataField="Country_Name"/>
Thanks for your time...
Have you tried using a ViewModel so it is not trying to bind to a navigation property?
something like:
public class UserViewModel
{
public int UserID { get; set; }
public string Username { get; set; }
public string CountryName { get; set; }
}

I'm using Kendo grid with ForeignKey column with sorting. By default this column is sorted by value but we need it to be sorted by text. Could anyone provide please an example of doing it using ASP.NET Wrappers?
I found the trick was to implement IComparable on the foreign key object, which then sorts by the text name instead of the id in the Kendo grid:
public class MyForeignKeyModel : IComparable<MyForeignKeyModel>
{
public int ID { get; set;}
public string Name { get; set;}
public int CompareTo(MyForeignKeyModel compareTo)
{
return String.Compare(Name, compareTo.Name, StringComparison.InvariantCulture);
}
}
All the other solutions mentioned by users and Telerik look much more complicated!
Reponse by Atanas Korchev (Admin, Kendo UI) We can’t support this in all cases because the data source won’t have all data (it usually has just the foreign key which is the value)
You can use Grouping if that helps to some extend.
I have a ‘Create’ page in my MVC3 application that has 4 input fields that are all required. I also have an ‘Edit’ page in which 3 of these 4 fields can be edited. I do not want to display the 4th field and want to maintain it at its initial value (the field is the date that the entry was created ).
I mark the 4th field as [Required] in the model then this causes the model to be declared as invalid in post action method of the Edit field. If I omit the [Required] annotation then someone can create a user with a null value for this 4th field.
How can I get around this problem?
Model Code:
[Required]
[DisplayName("User Name")]
public string UserName { get; set; }
[Required]
public string Role { get; set; }
[Required]
[DataType(DataType.Date)]
[DisplayName("Insert Date")]
public DateTime? InsertDate { get; set; }
[Required]
[DisplayName("Active")]
public bool ActiveInd { get; set; }
Controller Code:
public ActionResult Edit(int id, ZUserRoleModel mod)
{
if (ModelState.IsValid)
{
// code removed
return RedirectToAction("Index");
}
return View(mod);
}
You can make that field as hidden in edit mode.
#Html.HiddenFor(x => x.EntryDate)
Not sure if you still need an answer for this, but what you need to do in order for the
#Html.HiddenFor(x => x.EntryDate )
to work, is pass an existing model into view. So let's assume that your action for getting the user data looks like this. ( You did not supply it, so I am not sure if this is right )
Public ActionResult GetUser(int UserID)
{
ZUserRoleModel model = new ZUserRoleModel(UserID);
// Maybe this could go to your database and gather user
// It would populate the correct data into a model object
return View("Edit", model);
}
With combination of the hidden field, your view will be populated with the existing user information, and the hidden field will be populated with data, and it will be passed to your edit action.
NOTE: I wrote this without any kind of testing, but it should still work, or at the very least, I hope it points you in the right direction if you still need assistance.
You can use fluentvalidation: http://fluentvalidation.codeplex.com/
Have a rule that's something like
RuleFor(user => user.field4).NotEmpty().When(ViewContext.Controller.ValueProvider.GetValue("action").RawValue <> "edit")
How would I display data from the following database entity in a format that looks like a table:
public class Attendance
{
public int AttendanceID { get; set; }
public int CourseID { get; set; }
public int StudentID { get; set; }
public int AttendanceDay { get; set; }
public bool Present { get; set; }
public virtual Course Course { get; set; }
public virtual Student Student { get; set; }
}
I would want to find all rows in the Attendance db entry that had CourseID == x; So I would use something like:
AttendanceData = Attendance.Where(s => s.CourseID == x); // I think
Then I would need to be able to sort this information in my view to display it in a way that makes sense. I would want to have a data on screen with all of the present/not present values sorted in a table with StudentIDs listed on the left and AttendanceDays listed accross the top.
How would I sort and display this information?
UPDATE:
Using the following code (along with Mvc WebGrid) - I can get a grid of some sort to appear in my view.
Controller:
IEnumerable<Attendance> model = db.Attendance.Where(s => s.CourseID == 4);
return View(model);
View:
#model IEnumerable<MyProject.Models.Attendance>
<div>
#{
var grid = new WebGrid(Model, defaultSort: "Name");
}
#grid.GetHtml()
</div>
However, the grid is not organized in a manner that is useful for my needs.
I want the top of my displayed table to read:
Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | etc until the max value of "Attendance Day" (which is dictated at the creation of a Course that a student signs up for).
I want the left side of the displayed table to read:
Student ID 1
Student ID 5
Student ID 6
Student ID etc . . until all of the students within the data set have been displayed.
I think I need to use something along the lines of this in my controller:
var model = from s in db.Attendance
where s.CourseID == 4
group s.AttendanceDay by s.StudentID into t
select new
{
StudentID = t.Key,
Days = t.OrderBy(x => x)
};
return View(model);
But I need an IEnumerable<> returned to my view using Mvc WebGrid -- I am getting somewhere, just still a little lost along the way. Can I get a nudge in the right direction?
For a fairly typical set of requirements, it sounds like this would be a good candidate for the ASP.NET WebGrid. It's flexible, allows for paging, sorting, formatting, etc. I've used it for a few projects and works just like any of the other HTML helpers that you're probably used to in ASP.NET MVC.
Here's a good starting place.
I'm working on ASP.NET MVC 3 project using EF CodeFirst. I have a simple class with few attributes set on key column:
public class Tag
{
[Key]
[DatabaseGenerated(DatabaseGeneratedOption.None)]
[ScaffoldColumn(true)]
public short TagID { get; set; }
[Required]
[MaxLength(50)]
public string Name { get; set; }
}
As you can see there are DatabaseGenerated(DatabaseGeneratedOption.None) and ScaffoldColumn(true) attributes. That's because I want to be able to enter the TagID manually. Now when TagControler is added to the project I don't have the TagID column shown in neither of 5 generated views.
I know I can add it manually, but I wonder if this behavior is by design or I'm doing something wrong?
Primary keys aren't scaffolded as editable fields by default. Instead there is a hidden field for the key. If you wanted to change this behavior you could modify the templates but it is by design since generally it doesn't make sense to edit the primary key of an entity.
Here is some info on how to do this if you wanted to make this change any time you added a view or wanted to make some other custom change to the scaffolding:

I'm working with a Razor MVC3 project
I have a model
public class ProductFormatModel
{
public int ID {get; set;}
public string SerialID { get; set; }
public ProductTypes ProductType { get; set; }
public List<ProductComponent> Components { get; set; }
}
The ProductComponent class has two properties: int ID and string Description.
I would like the controller to work with a strongly typed view of ProductFormatModel type to create a new ProductFormatModel. The Create view should look like this:
A textfield to insert SerialID (done)
A dropdownlist to select the value of the enumerator ProductType (done)
A listbox with different rows showing the "Description" property of ProductComponent. Every row should present a record in the database. The user must be able to select one or more rows and in this way the property "Components" should have those objects in the list.
The database is a simple DbContext. MyDB.Components gives me the recordset of table "Components"
How do I pass the values of the recordset from the controller to the view?
Should I call a listboxfor with multiselectlist?
Should I add another property to the model like List ComponentsToBeSelected in which I can pass the list?
One possible design:
Use two listboxes in your view. Load the first with all possible ProductComponents that are not in model.Components, and use ListBoxFor to bind the second to the model.Components list.
Place two buttons, Add and Remove, between the lists. Wire these up with jQuery to move items between the two listboxes.
