I am using magento. I want to automatically update the cart on proceed to checkout button is clicked. so that my values are saved without the effort to click on update cart. Ajax based solution is also acceptable.
I was able to "fix" it by changing the behaviour of the Checkout button.
Instead of just going to the checkout page, it submits the cart form. In order to have it redirect to the checkout afterwards, it makes sure that redirect_url is set right before the submission.

This seems like a very poor idea. Customers have expectations about how a cart should function, especially with an update button being present. If you change that functionality so that a customer cannot see that their update was not made until they go through the entire checkout process, they may not order what they had intended, or they may not order at all. Surprising the user is almost always a bad idea.
Otherwise, short of AJAX, you'd want to make the "Checkout" button part of the same form that wraps the cart for updates.

I have a navbar on my users' panel. A part of the navbar indicates if the user has a new unread message. In this case a badge will appear next to an icon. I've simplified the codes here to make them easier to understand and read.

First of all, I know the way I've written this AJAX request is very rookie, but it works fine anyway, up to one point!
In case the user has a new message, and if they stay on a page, the code runs perfectly and shows the badge. But when the user refreshes the page or goes to another page, even-though they have a new message, that default state is shown again where there's no badge. And I know it's of course because I have specified a default state via HTML codes.
I need to know how I can keep the result of the AJAX request regardless of how many times the user refreshes the page or goes to another page.
UPDATE
I tried storing the query result in a SESSION in my ajax.php file. So instead of $data I wrote $_SESSION['data'].
Back on my HTML I made the following change:

I made this change because I considered the fact that SESSIONS, by definition, are created and accessed globally within the domain. So once it's set, it can be checked and used on all other pages.
So that only if that SESSION isn't set, the default state should be displayed. But that as well doesn't seem to have my desired result. Still the same thing happens.
Ok, answering my own question now. :)
My UPDATE seemed to be a good idea which I tried.
The problem there was that I had written session_start(); on my main PHP file which was included in all other PHP files of the project.
So I basically thought that when the ajax.php file is called, there's no need to write session_start(); again. Because ajax.php was called inside a PHP file that had session_start(); in it already. So, I was wrong!
Adding session_start(); to the beginning of my code in ajax.php simply fixed the issue.
I wonder if there is a way to add a Warning/Advisory or Terms & Conditions (preferably) to a category or a landing page to warn users about adult content. On the shop I'm working on there is an "Adult Section" Category for Erotic Toys, Lingerie, cosplay, etc. and I need to warn users about such content before they access the section in case they're less than 18.
I've searched the web and only found paid extensions which I cannot afford. Does anyone know how to do this?

Ok, so I've been trying to figure out how to do this and I just figured that the best way to do it would be to just create a Category Landing Page and adding a java script for T&C redirect to the page I want it to.

Now I was thinking that it would be best to just create a simple CMS page and point the category on the top menu to that page and once they have agreed and clicked on continue, they could be taken to the actual category by simply pointing the 'onclick' to the URL of the actual category.
Not sure if this is the best way but it's the only way I could come up. The other way I thought of would've required me to take the "agreements" during checkout that already comes with magento and make an extension that would allow me to place it on any page and call the "Agreement ID" from the Sales/Terms and Conditions tab but I don't know how to actually do that, it was just a thought.
If anyone has a better solution, I'd be happy to hear it.
I would add some sort of JavaScript that shows a div over the top of the whole page, that will create a session cookie when you accept to watch the category. Otherwise, make a back() in the history navigation. This way you don't need another page, just JS.
On another note, could you please post the extensions you found that do this?
One of our Vendors has a real time inventory system and we would like to implement it into our site. When a person clicks on the product, it should check the inventory and update as necessary. This works ok at best. The problem is when the product switches to in/out of stock. It updates properly in the backend, but I am unable to get the addtocart button to be added/removed. This is my code for updating the stock:

As you can see, I am force reloading the product when qty is changed. This seems to work for everything but the addtocart button. It shows the previous result (In stock or out of stock before the reload.)
I have 2 questions:
Is there a better way to reload a product other than reassigning it as I am doing above:

And why is it that everything is updating properly, but the addtocart which uses the same

Refreshing the page will update the product properly, but doing a meta refresh or anything of the sorts is out of the question. I appreciate any advice that could be given as I would like to get this resolved and on to the next task.
Unless I'm misunderstanding your question, it appears the thorn in your side is the stock status index.
Try this:

That's pretty much what I'm trying to do. All of my simple products are part of, at most, 1 configurable product, so there's no possibility for issues there.
This is necessary because I want my simple products (pillow in design X, color Y) to show in search, catalog but I need the user to know that the design exists in different colors once they click (presumably because they like design X but aren't necessarily sold on color Y). Further, my implementation of Color Swatches (extension) is causing my simple products (that are part of configurables) to behave funnily when accessed directly.

The overwriting of the More Images gallery bit is a project-specific customization, so keep that in mind.
I went and wrote a bunch of code to try to do this, and forgot that this is already a simple use case, and Magento has it written for you:
Mage::getResourceSingleton('catalog/product_type_configurable')
->getParentIdsByChild($childId);
That snippet should give you all parent products for the child. If there is one, redirect to it. Otherwise, render the page as requested.
you have two options here :
add rewrite rules form catalog > url rewrite management
program an extension that makes the necessary check against product database and makes the redirect
I created a confirmation page for deleting an item. This works perfectly.
Now I want to appear the confirmation page in fancybox, still passing all the variables and delete the data or close the dialog.
It's important that the process still works as it does now (delete->confirmationpage->redirect/deletion) so that users with javascript disabled can perform these actions without a problem.
Now have I been reading about zend framework,ajax, json and more, but the more I read, the less I understand.
So in a nutshell, my question:
I want to pass a variable to the fancybox and if 'yes' perform the delete action or on 'no' close the dialog. This within the zend framework and jquery.
Any advice or tips are greatly appreciated!
You need to use content switching in your ajax which will then render your action appropriately, for example:

This works like you would expect; when you click on delete the user goes to the delete confirmation page and redirects the user back to the index after the form is submitted. But I wanted the confirmation in a dialog (in my case I use fancybox). To achieve this, add the following jquery to your index:
