LINQ Join with Multiple Conditions in On Clause - linq

I'm trying to implement a query in LINQ that uses a left outer join with multiple conditions in the ON clause.
I'll use the example of the following two tables Project (ProjectID, ProjectName) and Task (TaskID, ProjectID, TaskName, Completed). I want to see the full list of all projects with their respective tasks, but only those tasks that are completed.
I cannot use a filter for Completed == true because that will filter out any projects that do not have completed tasks. Instead I want to add Completed == true to the ON clause of the join so that the full list of projects will be shown, but only completed tasks will be shown. Projects with no completed tasks will show a single row with a null value for Task.
Here's the foundation of the query.
from t1 in Projects
join t2 in Tasks
on new { t1.ProjectID} equals new { t2.ProjectID } into j1
from j2 in j1.DefaultIfEmpty()
select new { t1.ProjectName, t2.TaskName }
How do I add && t2.Completed == true to the on clause?
I can't seem to find any LINQ documentation on how to do this.

You just need to name the anonymous property the same on both sides
on new { t1.ProjectID, SecondProperty = true } equals
new { t2.ProjectID, SecondProperty = t2.Completed } into j1
Based on the comments of #svick, here is another implementation that might make more sense:
from t1 in Projects
from t2 in Tasks.Where(x => t1.ProjectID == x.ProjectID && x.Completed == true)
.DefaultIfEmpty()
select new { t1.ProjectName, t2.TaskName }

Here you go with:
from b in _dbContext.Burden
join bl in _dbContext.BurdenLookups on
new { Organization_Type = b.Organization_Type_ID, Cost_Type = b.Cost_Type_ID } equals
new { Organization_Type = bl.Organization_Type_ID, Cost_Type = bl.Cost_Type_ID }

You can't do it like that. The join clause (and the Join() extension method) supports only equijoins. That's also the reason, why it uses equals and not ==. And even if you could do something like that, it wouldn't work, because join is an inner join, not outer join.

Linq to SQL conversion...unable to add second COUNT

I'm trying to convert my SQL statement to a Linq statement and I'm not sure how to add the second COUNT to it. This is my SQL statement
SELECT l.Campus_Name, Labs = COUNT(*), LabsWithSubnets = COUNT(s.Lab_Space_Id)
FROM vw_Lab_Space l
LEFT JOIN vw_Subnet s on l.Lab_Space_Id = s.Lab_Space_Id
GROUP BY l.Campus_Name
ORDER BY 1
and this is my LINQ statement so far:
from l in Vw_Lab_Space
from s in Vw_Subnet
.Where(s => s.Lab_Space_Id == l.Lab_Space_Id)
.DefaultIfEmpty() // <=- triggers the LEFT JOIN
group l by new { l.Campus_Name } into g
orderby g.Key.Campus_Name
select new {
Campus_Name = g.Key.Campus_Name,
Labs = g.Count()
}
So I have everything but the LabsWithSubnets part in there. I'm just not sure how to add that in as I can't just do an s.Lab_Space_id.Count() in the select statement.
If you need table structure and sample data please see Need help creating an OUTER JOIN to count spaces.
Using your query as a basis, you need the groups to include s so you can count when non-null (I also removed the unnecessary anonymous object around the grouping key):
from l in Vw_Lab_Space
from s in Vw_Subnet
.Where(s => s.Lab_Space_Id == l.Lab_Space_Id)
.DefaultIfEmpty() // <=- triggers the LEFT JOIN
group new { l, s } by l.Campus_Name into g
orderby g.Key
select new {
Campus_Name = g.Key,
Labs = g.Count(),
LabsWithSubnets = g.Count(ls => ls.s != null)
}
However, rather than translate the SQL, I would probably take advantage of LINQ's group join to handle the query slightly differently:
var ans = from l in Vw_Lab_Space
join s in Vw_Subnet on l.Lab_Space_Id equals s.Lab_Space_Id into sj
group new { l, sj } by ls.Campus_Name into lsjg
select new {
Campus_Name = lsjg.Key,
NumLabs = lsjg.Count(),
LabsWithSubnets = lsjg.Sum(lsj => lsj.sj.Count())
};
PS Even in your query, I would use join...from...DefaultIfEmpty rather than from...from...where but depending on your database engine, may not matter.

Linq Left Outer Join Two Tables on Two Fields

How do I left outer join two tables on two fields in linq?
I have a sql:
select a.*, b.* from courselist as a
left outer join Summary as b
on a.subject = b.Subject and a.catalog =
b.Catalogno
where a.degree_id = 1
order by a.sequenceNo
Below is my linq query, but there is error underline "join", failed in the call to "Groupjoin". I don't know how to correct that.
var searchResults = (from a in db.courselist
join b in db.Summary on
new { a.subject,a.catalog } equals
new { b.Subject, b.Catalogno } into ab
where a.degree_id == 1
orderby a.degree_sequenceNo
from b in ab.DefaultIfEmpty()
select new
{
Courselist = a,
Summary = b
}
).ToList();
Thanks.
I've checked your code again,
I found it's fault
you just need to specify join parameters name like this:
new { suject = a.subject, catalog = a.catalog } equals
new { suject = b.subject, catalog = b.Catalogno } into ab
It seems you are missing the reference, the query doesn't have an error
try to use this:
using System.Linq;
The main issue when people start using LINQ is that they keep thinking in the SQL way, they design the SQL query first and then translate it to LINQ. You need to learn how to think in the LINQ way and your LINQ query will become neater and simpler. For instance, in your LINQ you don't need joins. You should use Associations/Navigation Properties instead. Check this post for more details.
There should be a relationship between courselist and Summary, in which case, you can access Summary through courselist like this:
var searchResults = (from a in db.courselist
where a.degree_id == 1
orderby a.degree_sequenceNo
select new {
Courselist = a,
Summary = a.Summary
}).ToList();
If there is no relationship between the two, then you should reconsider your design.

What tools are there that help build expression trees for dynamic LINQ queries?

My project needs to let users build their own dynamic queries. From what I've read, Expression Trees are the way to go. However the syntax is rather complicated.
I envision having a GUI where users would be able to check tables, select columns, specify parameters,etc and then build a string such as:
var myQuery =
from P in context.Projects
join UA in context.UserAttributes on P.ProjectID equals UA.ProjectID
join UBA in context.UserBooleanAttributes on UA.UserAttributeID equals UBA.UserAttributeID
join U in context.Users on UBA.UserID equals U.UserID
where P.ProjectID == 1
where UBA.Value == true
where (UA.UserAttributeID == 1 || UA.UserAttributeID == 2)
select new { uba = U };
And store that in a queries table. To process the query, I was hoping there is some library out there that will magically do something like:
var result = magic(str);
foreach(var user in result)
Foo(user.Email);
In this example I know that all my queries would return Users, but for other queries I would probably have to use reflection or in another column specify the expected type in results.
I found one project called LinqTextQueryBuilder which looks interesting, but I wanted to see if there are other alternatives.

multiple grouping, inner joning in Linq

I am trying to translate this into Linq and cannot figure it out:
SELECT
CustomerOrder.ShipState, MONTH(OrderFulfillment.OrderDate) AS Mnth,
YEAR(OrderFulfillment.OrderDate) AS Yer,
SUM(OrderFulfillment.Tax) AS TotalTax
FROM
OrderFulfillment INNER JOIN
CustomerOrder ONOrderFulfillment.OrderID =CustomerOrder.OrderID
WHERE
(OrderFulfillment.Tax > 0)
GROUP BY
CustomerOrder.ShipState, MONTH(OrderFulfillment.OrderDate),
YEAR(OrderFulfillment.OrderDate)
ORDER BY
YEAR(OrderFulfillment.OrderDate) DESC, CustomerOrder.ShipState,
MONTH(OrderFulfillment.OrderDate) DESC
I have Linqpad and have gone through a bunch of the examples but cannot figure this out.
I think you want to do something like this:
from c in CustomerOrder
join o in OrderFulfillment on c.OrderId equals o.OrderId
where
o.Tax > 0
group o by
new { c.ShipState, Mnth = of.OrderDate.Month, Yer = of.OrderDate.Year }
into g
orderby
g.Key.Yer descending, g.ShipState, g.Key.Mnth descending
select
new { g.Key.ShipState, g.Key.Mnth, g.Key.Yer,
TotalTax = g.Sum(i => i.Tax) };
I haven't tried to compile it, but I think this is something along the lines of what you want.
The idea is that first you perform your join to link the customers and orders. Then apply your filter condition.
At that point, you want to get all the orders that have a particular group, so the group operator is applied.
Finally, order the results, then select out all info from the keys for each group, and sum up the tax in each of the group.
First of all, it would be nice to know what exactly you can't figure out. If you're completely lost and don't know where to begin then you need to google around for linq joining and grouping.
Here's something I did recently that may (possibly) point you in the right direction:
// This groups items by category and lists all category ids and names
from ct in Categories
join cst in Category_Subtypes
on ct.Category_Id equals cst.Category_Id
join st in Subtypes
on cst.Subtype_Id equals st.Subtype_Id
where
st.Type_Id == new Guid(id)
group ct by new { ct.Category_Id, ct.Display_Text } into ctg
select new
{
Id = ctg.Key.Category_Id,
Name = ctg.Key.Display_Text
}

Stuck on a subquery that is grouping, in Linq`

I have some Linq code and it's working fine. It's a query that has a subquery in the Where clause. This subquery is doing a groupby. Works great.
The problem is that I don't know how to grab one of the results from the subquery out of the subquery into the parent.
Frst, here's the code. After that, I'll expplain what piece of data i'm wanting to extract.
var results = (from a in db.tblProducts
where (from r in db.tblReviews
where r.IdUserModified == 1
group r by
new
{
r.tblAddress.IdProductCode_Alpha,
r.tblAddress.IdProductCode_Beta,
r.tblAddress.IdProductCode_Gamma
}
into productGroup
orderby productGroup.Count() descending
select
new
{
productGroup.Key.IdProductCode_Alpha,
productGroup.Key.IdProductCode_Beta,
productGroup.Key.IdProductCode_Gamma,
ReviewCount = productGroup.Count()
}).Take(3)
.Any(
r =>
r.IdProductCode_Alpha== a.IdProductCode_Alpha&&
r.IdProductCode_Beta== a.IdProductCode_Beta&&
r.IdProductCode_Gamma== a.IdProductCode_Gamma)
where a.ProductFirstName == ""
select new {a.IdProduct, a.FullName}).ToList();
Ok. I've changed some field and tables names to protect the innocent. :)
See this last line :-
select new {a.IdProduct, a.FullName}).ToList();
I wish to include in that the ReviewCount (from the subquery). I'm jus not sure how.
To help understand the problem, this is what the data looks like.
Sub Query
IdProductCode_Alpha = 1, IdProductCode_Beta = 2, IdProductCode_Gamma = 3, ReviewCount = 10
... row 2 ...
... row 3 ...
Parent Query
IdProduct = 69, FullName = 'Jon Skeet's Wonder Balm'
So the subquery grabs the actual data i need. The parent query determines the correct product, based on the subquery filters.
EDIT 1: Schema
tblProducts
IdProductCode
FullName
ProductFirstName
tblReviews (each product has zero to many reviews)
IdProduct
IdProductCode_Alpha (can be null)
IdProductCode_Beta (can be null)
IdProductCode_Gamma (can be null)
IdPerson
So i'm trying to find the top 3 products a person has done reviews on.
The linq works perfectly... except i just don't know how to include the COUNT in the parent query (ie. pull that result from the subquery).
Cheers :)
Got it myself. Take note of the double from at the start of the query, then the Any() being replaced by a Where() clause.
var results = (from a in db.tblProducts
from g in (
from r in db.tblReviews
where r.IdUserModified == 1
group r by
new
{
r.tblAddress.IdProductCode_Alpha,
r.tblAddress.IdProductCode_Beta,
r.tblAddress.IdProductCode_Gamma
}
into productGroup
orderby productGroup.Count() descending
select
new
{
productGroup.Key.IdProductCode_Alpha,
productGroup.Key.IdProductCode_Beta,
productGroup.Key.IdProductCode_Gamma,
ReviewCount = productGroup.Count()
})
.Take(3)
Where(g.IdProductCode_Alpha== a.IdProductCode_Alpha&&
g.IdProductCode_Beta== a.IdProductCode_Beta&&
g.IdProductCode_Gamma== a.IdProductCode_Gamma)
where a.ProductFirstName == ""
select new {a.IdProduct, a.FullName, g.ReviewCount}).ToList();
While I don't understand LINQ completely, but wouldn't the JOIN work?
I know my answer doesn't help but it looks like you need a JOIN with the inner table(?).
I agree with shahkalpesh, both about the schema and the join.
You should be able to refactor...
r => r.IdProductCode_Alpha == a.IdProductCode_Alpha &&
r.IdProductCode_Beta == a.IdProductCode_Beta &&
r.IdProductCode_Gamma == a.IdProductCode_Gamma
into an inner join with tblProducts.
