Came to work this morning, my PC (Win7 x64) had force rebooted by Windows Update. Now, SQL Server Management Studio (SQL Server 2008 r2) fails when connecting to a database and trying to expand the tree view, citing:
Unable to cast COM object of type 'System.__ComObject' to interface
type 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.OLE.Interop.IServiceProvider'. This
operation failed because the QueryInterface call on the COM component

So, quite a bit. The Event Viewer shows no errors (not regarding this, anyway) and all updates were successfully installed. I'm kind of stuck here right now, I've seen some articles recommending re-registering DLLs, but so far that hasn't worked.
Any help would be most welcome!
Finally found a fix!
Seems like Internet Explorer is the culprit, for some very strange reason.
Launch command line in administrative mode.
Go to C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer or c:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer if you have Win x64.
Execute regsvr32 /u ieproxy.dll (this might throw an error if it isn't loaded)
Execute regsvr32 ieproxy.dll
This did the trick for me (actually, I registered/unregistered one extra time, but that shouldn't have anything to say?)!
Hope this helps anyone!

I'm trying to get Visual Studio 2013 running as an administrator, but I'm constantly getting errors. I've searched and tried solutions for other versions of VS, but those fixes didn't apply, so hopefully someone here can help.
When I try to run VS2013 as an admin, I an error saying that the application cannot start.
I saw a few articles talking about copying and registering dte*.olb files, but they were for previous versions of VS. I copied one of the files over and registered it and I can now get past the original error, but I can't compile any application - including any default template workspaces. Before I went too crazy and potentially made things worse, I wanted to ask here.
If I don't get the "application cannot start" message, I get this message when I try to compile anything:
---------------------------
Microsoft Visual Studio
---------------------------
Error loading type library/DLL. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80029C4A (TYPE_E_CANTLOADLIBRARY))
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
The problem is that that error code doesn't tell me what library wont load.
The output window says:
Error occurred while restoring NuGet packages: Error loading type library/DLL. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80029C4A (TYPE_E_CANTLOADLIBRARY))
1>------ Build started: Project: WcfService1, Configuration: Debug Any CPU ------
1> WcfService1 -> C:\Users\David\Documents\Visual Studio 2013\Projects\WcfService1\WcfService1\bin\WcfService1.dll
========== Build: 1 succeeded, 0 failed, 0 up-to-date, 0 skipped ==========
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling NuGet with no change in the behavior.
And if I go to the project properties, I can't see the Web, Package/Publish Web, or Code Analysis Tabs.
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?
This is on Windows 8.1 Pro. My exact VS configuration is below.

And I'll go with the saddest answer of all time: Have you tried a full uninstall, reboot and re-install of Visual Studio?
This will also help if the issue is as a result of an add-in or similar.
I had a lot of issues with a clean install of VS2013 on win7 (projects not loading, crashes etc). A re-install sadly was the only thing that helped. This is poor advice I know but still sometimes one of the best fixes to some VS ills.
[EDIT]
I am no fan of fixing up failed installs unless it breaks the same every time.
Refer Connect Article (For VS2012 but same issue).
This Stack Overflow question may help with the crashes. The question is for VS2008 but it looks identical. Try and reset your fonts as suggested. (I think running Devenv /ResetSettings at a minimum is not a bad idea)
I do recommend to disable Resharper. From time to time I meet a VS solution which I can't open in VS2013 with enabled ReSharper.
Tools->Options->Resharper->Suspend Now
It will be difficult to help without some information such as
- Event log for the error
- Further details of the error message ("Application cannot start" is a bit vague)
Have you rebooted since installing ?
Have you updated via windows update yet ?
Did you install it to its usual path or somewhere else ?
Did you install it as admin or under a user account ?
If its work pc is it installed locally or under a roaming profile ?
No problems on my surface pro or desktop running it as admin or standard user
but it is installed locally and was installed under my developer account but works under all accounts (test ,dev, admin, user etc)
Based on the information provided, I believe there is an issue with Microsoft Office Developer Tools specifically Outlook related.
Fix 1:
Checking your Office directory for msoutl.olb. If it is there, try running 'regtlib msoutl.olb'. You should have regtlib on your machine is part of your Visual Studio install, I believe. Anyway, reregistering the typelib will rewrite all of the necessary keys to the registry. You will need administrative privileges for this operation.
Fix 2:
Try running a program that came with Outlook - C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033\Scanpst.exe
For more information please see this site - Click Here
Fix 3:
Try uninstalling Office Developer Tools and see if the problem persists.
Fix 4:
The other possibility is that msoutl.olb itself is corrupt, in which case reinstalling Outlook should fix the problem.
This could be windows 8 acting up. Saying that, insure that your OS is updated, new patches to fix broken stuff should be regular, i suspect a lot of broken things.
Insure that you have the correct .net framework installed and re-install it if necessary. I am not too familiar with Windows 8, i had 3 months of an unpleasant experience with it, but try to see if you can change the compatibility mode by right clicking on the .exe file.
i doubt my response would be any better than others but i felt like contributing and since no one mentioned either checking the .net framework or the compatability..
best of luck!
also i did a small bit of research into TYPE_E_cantloadlibrary and found this link, maybe you should check it out

Try this:
right click devenv.exe
troubleshoot compatibility
Troubleshoot program
This program requires addition permission
Next
Test the program
Next
Yes, save these settings for this program.
This will make VS run as administrator from now on.
I ran into the exact same problem. My issue was that the 'Start Page' was fowled up.
I've edited the following:
> Tools > Options > Startup
Choose 'Show empty environment' in the 'At startup' pulldown
This fixed all my problems and can run as Administrator again.
I am currently working on a long-term project for which I need Visual Studio 2005, 2008, 2012 (2010 not necessary). Right now I have Windows 7, but I would really like to upgrade. Is it possible to install all of those versions of Visual Studio on Windows 8?
2012 can obviously installed (and takes away the need for 2010). I already found reports that 2008 is also possible if the 3.5 framework is enabled through Windows Features, but I'm unsure about Visual Studio 2005.
Is it possible and does anybody have any experience with this?
PS: Do not come with solutions as "Why still use 2005, 2008, ...", I really need it.
After installing it on VMWare (Virtualbox gives errors) I've enabled framework 3.5 (which indeed contains 2.0 and 2.5). After that I've installed Visual Studio C# Express Edition. During installation and startup of VS it gives a lot of "This program has been known for comptability problems" warnings and they offer to search help online or to run it as usual. I've always opted to let it run as usual. It installed fine and I could compile and run a Visual C# Windows application.
Visual Studio 2005 Standard installed mostly fine for me. I installed it on Windows 8 on an x64 CPU. It complained a bunch about "known compatibility issues," but if I told it to carry on everything seemed to go fine. The only catch was that "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition x64" failed to install. Also, I had to run Visual Studio as administrator the first time so it could finish its setup, but after that I've just run it with my normal account.
Download Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation and install to VMWare or Virtual Box. It's a 3 month trial and would allow you to test VS2005 plus the others. Once downloaded, it's a fast install. You can download from here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/jj554510.aspx
For an install of Visual Studio 2005 on Windows 7 as well as Windows 8 I install three things: (1) Visual Studio 2005, (2) Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1, and (3) Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 Update for Windows Vista.
The Visual Studio 2005 service packs can be a bit difficult to locate on Microsoft's web site since everything is really about Visual Studio 2012 and later.
When installing Visual Studio 2005, there will be a number of Incompatible warnings displayed. I just click through them to get to the end.
Also I do a custom install and do not install some components: (1) Crystal Reports and (2) SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite Service Pack 1 which seems to be for all editions of Visual Studio 2005 including Professional Edition which I use.
Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 Update for Windows Vista is required to update Service Pack 1 to work with Windows Vista and later.
Visual Studio 2005 / 2008 won't install by default on Windows versions later than 7.
In Windows 8.1, go to:
Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off
Check the box labeled ".NET 3.5 (Includes 1.0 and 2.0)" and press OK / Apply.
My system has issues with trying to download the files for such programs, and thus there is a way to bypass this error by running a script which installs the files from a Windows installation disc.
Here is the script (for error 0x800F0906, at least):
Dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFx3 /All /Source:D:\sources\sxs /LimitAccess
You can replace /Source:D: with whatever drive letter you may be using for your optical / virtual drive, if needed.
Does VSTO 3.0 (using Visual Studio 2008) support both Office 2003 and Office 2007 installed side-by-side on a single development computer so that both Office 2003 and Office 2007 can be targeted (in separate solutions)?
I have seen conflicting information about this.
NO: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb398242.aspx
Visual Studio Tools for Office does not support installing Microsoft Office 2003 and the 2007 Microsoft Office system (or different versions of the same application, such as Word 2003 and Word 2007) side-by-side on the development computer. To develop solutions for different versions of Microsoft Office, use a different development computer for each version of Microsoft Office.
YES: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/15s06t57.aspx
When you install Visual Studio Tools for Office, the primary interop assemblies are automatically installed to a location in the file system, outside of the global assembly cache. When you create a new project, Visual Studio Tools for Office automatically adds references to these copies of the primary interop assemblies to your project. Visual Studio Tools for Office uses these copies of the primary interop assemblies, instead of the assemblies in the global assembly cache, to resolve type references when you develop and build your project.
These copies of the primary interop assemblies help Visual Studio Tools for Office avoid several development issues that can occur when both the 2003 and the 2007 versions of the Office primary interop assemblies are registered in the global assembly cache.”
Has anyone done this and were there any problems?
You can target both 2003 and 2007 with the same computer - but you need two different programs for that in Visual Studio (e.g. MyCoolThingfor2003.sln and MyCoolThingfor2007.sln) as they have different interops. But you should not have both Office programs installed on that same computer.
You can't install Office 2003 and 2007 side by side. The two links you posted talk about different things. The first link says no to installing the actual Office 200x application, whereas the second link refers to the PIA (which is just a wrapper). You can install any version of the PIAs on a computer side by side, but it doesn't mean it'll launch different versions of office.
If your goal is to develop a VSTO addin that supports both Office 2003 and Office 2007, then you'll need to develop on a system with VS2008 + Office 2003.
I am trying to connect to my TFS 2010 RC server. When I try to connect I get a error message.
Here is a screen shot:
alt text http://xs.to/image-2537_4B8BEAA0.jpg
This is the path I am using to connect: http://tfs2010test:8080/tfs/DefaultCollection
I have Team Explorer 2008 SP 1 installed.
I have read this question: Visual Studio 2008: Can't connect to known good TFS 2010. That is how I got my path that I tried.
I can connect just fine using Visual Studio 2010.
What am I missing?
Have you installed the forward compatibility update from here? Further details can be found here.
Here was my solution to get Visual Studio 2008 Team System to connect to TFS2010: (Beware convoluted).
Install Visual Studio 2008 Team Explorer
Uninstall Office 2007 (because of an incompatibility between Visual Studio 2008 SP1 installer and Office 2007)
Run the Microsoft Install Clean Up utility to remove all references to Office 2007 that did not get removed when uninstalling)
Re-Install Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1
Install Visual Studio Team System 2008 Service Pack 1 Forward Compatibility Update for Team Foundation Server 2010
Reinstall Office 2007 or go to OpenOffice
Access TFS2010 repository...
When I have added TFS servers before, I could not add the port in the URL. Have you tried this without the port, and allow discovery?
A few things to try:
Have you tried connecting with Team Explorer 2010?
Have you tried creating a new project collection?
On your server, open the TFS admin tool and confirm that you have permissions to use that collection.
Be aware, some options are just not available in Team Explorer 2008.
Let me know if you need help with the security/groups on the server. It was very confusing to me when I first tried to work with it.
I wanted to get some feedback about the problems we might face if we deploy Sharepoint 2007 on Windows 2008 instead on windows 2003
Windows SharePoint Services 3 is supported just fine on Windows 2008. You'll need to make sure that you're using SP1.
See answers on ServerFault:
Installing Office SharePoint 2007 on Windows Server 2008 R2?
Installing Sharepoint 2007 on Windows Server 2008 R2
To save you time two main points of the solution are:
Create your own slip-streamed installation of SharePoint with the latest Service Pack included (SP3 at the moment) and then install this directly onto Windows Server 2008 R2.
Activate .NET Framework 3.5.1 feature in Windows Server to get rid of the Windows Workflow Foundation error
