I just installed new copy of visual studio 2010 and when i tried to open old project i got error message.
So i just tried to create new project, and received the same message.
No valid exports were found that match the contraint '((exportDefinition.ContractName == "Microsoft.VisualStudio.Text.ITextBufferFactoryService") AndAlso (exportDefinition.Metadata.ContainsKey("ExportTypeIdentiy") AndAlso "Microsoft.VisualStudio.Text.ITextBufferFactoryService".Equals(exportDefinition.Metadata.get_Item("ExportTypeIdentity"))))', invalid exports may have been rejected.
I already tried to remove and re-install it. After that did not work i tried to use repair option.
I'm running Windows 7 64bit OS.
I had a similar error with Visual Studio 2012 that seemed to have been caused when I enabled ClearType text on a different monitor. I found a solution in another MSDN thread:
Remove the file: Microsoft.VisualStudio.Default.cache
in the folder: in C:\Users...\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\11.0\ComponentModelCache
After starting VS2012 re-generates the file and everything works.
I was able to resolve the issue. After a suggestion from a coworker I installed VS2010 SP1. After SP1 was installed issue has not come back.

I'm getting the following error when opening VS 2017 on Windows 7 64-bit:
Package management initialization failed: Access Denied.
You can get more information by examining the file:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\VisualStudio\15.<version>\ActivityLog.xml
It all started after I added my solution to SVN. I had no problems until I tried to add a file and got the following error:
Value does not fall within the expected range
I followed the steps mentioned in this answer and did a 'devenv /setup', after that I started getting the Package management initialization failed: Access Denied. error when opening VS. Now Visual Studio doesn't even start.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and resolved it?
Edit:
I tried starting as an administrator and it worked. But otherwise it doesn't.
It turns out that this is a bug, that hasn't yet been resolved. This error also occurs when starting Visual Studio after an update.
But there is a workaround from this thread that worked for me,
Delete the privateregistry.bin file from the following folder:
C:\users\%username%\Appdata\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\15.0_<version id>\
This is however a temporary fix and resets the user's preferences. That's why it worked when I started it as an administrator, since the problem is user specific.
Update
This bug is supposedly fixed in the latest versions of Visual Studio. But for the bug fix to work, the old privateregistry.bin file still needs to be deleted.
#Xpleria, the answer works fine. To open the AppData folder, you can type:
%AppData%
directly in the Address bar.

I had this issue after installing SSDT for VS 2017 in a new vs instance.
So it's like I have two visual studio in my machine.
To fix that, I uninstalled the SSDT package, restart my machine and reinstall it on the initial installed visual studio instance.
I had the same problem and when I looked at
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio
I noticed that I had miltiple versions of visual studio meaning the current update might not have been successfull, as I was not able to delete the file that #Neil Patro says, I simply deleted the entire updates and all was ok.
I guess adding this as an answer might help.
Happened to me with an existing VS instance running, where I disabled an extension (VsChromium). Closing all VS instances solved the error and VS starts normally.
Env: VS 2019 Pro, Win 10 x64, running as current user.
I am getting an "Unknown Error" (shown below) alert when I try to launch Visual Studio 2017 Community after successful installation.
UPDATE: After Force uninstall & reinstallation
remove this folder (or similar):
%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\15.0_db2a872f
folder name 15.0_db2a872f could be different in your machine eg. 15.0_XXXXXXX
found in the vs startup log that processing of Progression_NativePackage_Component_x86.pkgdef bailed out, indicating an inconsistent extension installation
I only had to rename(if you wan't to back it up)/delete the following file:
privateregistry.bin
or
privateregistry.user.bin
depending on Visual Studio version.
%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\15.0_********\privateregistry.bin
%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\15.0_********\privateregistry.user.bin
After restarting Visual Studio 2017 you may need to activate Tools or Extensions again.
Please check if the machine has Symantec Workspace Virtualization Agent installed. Removing the product from add\remove programs fixed the unknown error while launching VS 2017.
Here is the detail of the product.

Package code: {32DB9767-3EF7-465A-ADF2-7ECFD25ABC12}
Install date: 2015.05.21
Version: 6.4.1266

I ran it as Admin and it somehow booted up just fine after that. I was getting the same error even after making sure that all packages and SDKs were installed until I ran it as admin.
Basically, just go to the shortcut in Start or to the .exe in the files, then right click it and run as Admin or change it in the properties. Tbh, it seems like a temporary fix and I'd actually like to know the real source of the problem, but for now, I don't have to reinstall and repair over and over.
Same version: Visual Studio Community 2017 installed using the launcher
I have a same problem after update VS 2017 Enterprise to the build 26228.9.
Repair installation doesn't fix anything. Still I got "Unknown error" message immediately after start VS2017.
Fixing is possible by removing this folder:
"C:\Users\USER_NAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\15.0_xxxxxxx"
where xxxxxxxx is some hexadecimal number.
BUT AFTER THAT YOU LOSE ALL SETTINGS that you done on your installation of VS 2017 (except product license key appliance).
Sorry that I must say this, but:
Maybe will be better stuck on the VS2015 for now. Because MS still not has really fully functional build of VS for now.
VS 2017 is still ready for first experimenting only and not for real work.
It is same story like a was when VS2015 has been published. (after several days stop working).
I fixed it the same way as niclar by deleting folder 15_.*. It does however appear that renaming privateregistry.bin has same effect with less trouble.
As mentioned by Torbjorn, ReSharper and other Extensions can mess up, however no reinstall required.
Merely go to Tools > Extensions and Updates... > Scroll through list of Installed Extensions > Enable those that should be enabled.
I have a side by side installation with VS2015. After opening and closing VS2015 once, VS2017 ist starting again normally. Strange but helped in my case.
I only needed to delete or rename ApplicationPrivateSettings.lock within C:\users{your username}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\15.0_c31ecfb9 folder.
I was experiencing this issue with Visual Studio Professional
when not running as administrator. (It worked Ok as administrator)
I used Niclar's solution of deleting the folders.
I found same issue after installing the extension and removing the folder "C:\Users\USER_NAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\15.0_xxxxxxx" solved my problem.
you can rename the Solution Name and reopen the Project it solved for me after repairing the VS Installation
I recently installed Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate version on my machine. I'm just trying to create a sample windows form project and trying to open the designer / form by double clicking on Form1.cs and I'm getting this weird error message:
"the service microsoft.visualstudio.shell.interop.iselectioncontainer already exists in the service container"
My system is already having Visual Studio 2010 which is working smoothly from a long time. I then installed Visual Studio 2012 which was giving the same problem as above. So I went ahead with installing VS 2013 hoping that I might be able to get rid of this issue, but no use.
Once I click OK on the error windows, I can see the following "message" in the bottom Error List window:
"The file 'C:\Users\ABCD\Documents\Visual Studio 2013\Projects\WebSite1\WindowsFormsApplication1\Form1.cs' does not support code parsing or generation because it is not contained within a project that supports code."
I have spent 2-3 days searching various blogs like these, all of which talk about previous version of Visual Studio like VS 2005 / VS 2008:
https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/311949/the-service-microsoft-visualstudio-shell-interop-iselectioncontainer-already-exists-in-the-service-container
Form inheritance in Visual Studio 2008 doesn't work
I have even tried uninstalling and reinstalling VS 2013, again no use.
It would be really great if someone can help me out in fixing this.
I've just had the exact same error message.
After compiling the solution(F6 or Build->Build Solution) it worked fine for me.
To deal with your issue, please first make sure that you installed latest updates on your Windows 8 machine, and then repair VS2013.
During your repairing process, please temporally turn off your anti-virus/antispyware software and repair VS2013 with the Administrator privilege.

The problem got resolved finally, after so many days and various frustrating tries to resolve the issue. I should thank Tim Atkins from Microsoft for helping me with resolving this issue.
Fix: When we tried 'gacutil /l system.design', we found that there were 3 variants of system.design; One from .Net 2.0 targetting MSIL, second from .Net 4.0 targetting x86 and last one also from .Net 4.0, but targetting MSIL.
On a working machine, there were only 2 entries, the .Net 4.0 one targetting x86 wasn't there. Hence we uninstalled this version using gacutil which did the magic. I was so relieved seeing the win forms popping up without any errors anymore :)
I changed the target framework from 4.5 to 4.6.1 and it fixed it for me. My assumption is sometimes when you change target framework back and forth and the process does not go through all the way (cancelling in the middle of changing it) - something happens that leads to this error. Hope that helps
I solved this be closing VS, deleting contents of the .vs folder where my solution is, restarting VS and recompiling.
Seems like one of those file/settings/caching problems that pop up now and then, might be after switching source branch.
VS2019, .net fw 4.6.2.
If your C drive (Where you are installing Visual Studio) does not have enough space, try moving some files from the C drive to another drives.
I used to use vs 2012 for some month without any problem, today when I want to open my c# project , I got this error message:
This program has known compatibility issues
Visual Studio 2012 Express for Windows Desktop is incompatible with this version of Windows.
when I click Run program I got this error:
'Microsoft.VisualStudio.Editor.Implementation.EditorPackage' package did not load correctly
When I continue with this error message, another error message shows: Visual Studio has stopped working. I need to get it work as soon as posible, any idea?
I had a similar problem, installing this patch solved it: KB2781514
I just got this error in VS2013 after installing a VS extension. I fixed it by closing all instances of Visual Studio, then removing %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\12.0\ComponentModelCache
Happened to me today on VS 2012. The Update mentioned by Jarek didn't install (it complained I already have more stuff installed). Deleting the folder mentioned by squeaky didn't work.
Finally fixed after I installed VS 2012 Update 4 : http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=39305
When I start visual studio express 2012 for web I get this error in the package manager console.
Cannot load Windows PowerShell snap-in Microsoft.PowerShell.Core because of the following
error: Unable to load one or more of the requested types. Retrieve the LoaderExceptions
property for more information.
Loader Exceptions:
Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown.
I don't remember adding anything new to visual studio. I searched other related problems but they don't work for me.
I tried repairing visual studio. I also tried re-installing visual studio which temporarily removed the problem but it is back again.
Anyone has a solution?
I finally made it work. I suspected it is something from windows update that messed up with my VS since I didn't really add anything to VS. I am not sure which updates to remove so I just uninstalled all the windows update that starts in a certain date. Here are the actual steps that I did:
What I did is uninstalled visual studio 2012 express for web following this tutorial.
And then uninstalled windows updates starting from the date I believe the error started appearing.
After I used CCleaner to clean my registry. Had to run it 2 times to just to make sure it is clean. I'm not sure if this actually helps. I just heard from my friend that uninstalling applications sometime leaves registry keys behind.
Finally, I installed visual studio again. Package manager is back to normal.
Restarted my laptop and it is still working. So I guess it is solved.
I think System Restore would do solve this instead of doing all this steps. But system restore was not an option for .
