Let's say I have a folder on my desktop with the following files:
file_c.txt
file_c-1.txt
file_b.txt
file_b-1.txt
file_a.txt
file_a-1.txt
Then, I do a finder search, in the folder, looking at the filenames and not the content.
If I enter a search criteria of: -1.
I get NO results!
Also, I cannot seem to find ANY documentation on escaping, wildcarding, or anything on the search function inside a folder....
Does anyone know how to search for this type of filename? I have a client that I have to constantly filter out these types of files from the contents of a folder on my desktop, so it would be REALLY helpful to simply search for them and delete them en mass.
Anyone run into this before? And how did you resolve it?
You need to enclose the search string in quotes: "-1." which now should give the result you want.
I banged my head on a desk for a long time before I figured this one out by accident.
I also count'd find anything online... weird.

I have a flow that pulls a list of filenames from an Excel file and then looks for them in a folder. Sometimes the filenames have parentheses in them, which causes issues with the search query and it doesn't even look for the file. I'm not sure how to handle the parentheses, but I don't want to remove the parentheses from the filenames (and ergo the search query). I thought about trimming the parentheses from the search query, but I want to make sure the right file is found. Perhaps I just need a way to escape the parentheses? I'm not sure how to do that though.
Here's a picture of the flow section in question:
I tried to find another post on this but after searching for a while I couldn't find anything, so I'm sorry if this has been answered already!
Any help is appreciated!
Edit: I'm going to try replacing any parentheses found with %28/%29 per Expiscornovus' suggestion.
Can you use a different search mode in the settings of your Find Files in Folder action (OneDriveSearch instead of Pattern)?
Ignore my previous suggested encoding. Inputting the Search query with parentheses should work. Look at the example below.
How to enable searching in <syntaxhighlight> tag (SyntaxHighlight GeSHi extension)? I'm trying to search for com.android.chrome in it, but no result found :-(. String is IMHO long enough to be found.
<syntaxhighlight lang="java">
supproclist.add("com.whatsapp");
supproclist.add("com.android.chrome");
</syntaxhighlight>
You don't need to do anything special; everything within <syntaxhighlight> tags is already included in the normal site-wide search system (based on MySQL search).
Edit: You definitely should be getting a match on com.android.chrome. Is this on a public wiki? Can you provide a link?
You won't get a result when searching for com.android however, because the search system only finds whole words, and the dot is considered part of the word. This is quite separate from, and not changed by, the SyntaxHightlight extension.
I have a series of folders, each contains 3 folders. Inside each of these three folders is a copy of the same image with the same filename, but they're optimized differently like so.
|-Event1
|---optimized
|---originals
|---thumbnails
|-Event2
|---optimized
|---originals
|---thumbnails
|-Event3
|---optimized
|---originals
|---thumbnails
I'd like to find only those photos in the optimized directories which contain "486" in their filename and copy those off to a different folder.
I've tried searching in finder. I can easily narrow the search down by file type (Image) and filename contains "486", but can't seem to figure out how to limit it to only those images within the "optimized" folder. I thought "Document Container" might be the trick, but didn't work. Help appreciated!
#tripleee answer did the trick, though it doesn't answer how to do this in the finder (which is totally okay with me).
$ cp Event*/optimized/*486* destination/
I need to quickly write a simple GUI over a command line application. Two steps are required:
Specify an input file path,
Specify an output file path (non existing)
I found out a previous post, however trying to get the above (1) to work seems like an insane task.
Indeed BrowseForFolder seems to only work in some weird cases, you can use BIF_BROWSEINCLUDEFILES for only *.pdf and/or *.txt (trial and errors). I can get an error if I select a *.dll and/or a *.jpg (don't ask).
So instead, I gave up this approach and followed another one, in this case (objIE.Document.all.FileSelect), only the name of the selected file is returned the path seems to be always set to "c:/fakepath" for some reason. So again I am missing the full path to be able to pass that to the command line app.
Is there any sane way (<10 lines of codes) to get (1) and (2) working on Win7/64bits (VBS, HTA...)?
Don't know if people are still interested in the BrowseForFolder file selection issue, but here's what I've found.
I had the same issue selecting files with BrowseForFolder using &H4000 / BIF_BROWSEINCLUDEFILES. I could get a return with .docx but not .doc files and as you say .pdf files.
For me .txt wouldn't return anything, as didn't WMI Backup .rec files that I needed for a script I'm writing, resulting in this error information:-
Error: Unspecified error
Code: 80004005
Source: (null)
After looking at other solutions I came back to this one as my preferred choice, plus it was doing my head in that it didn't want to work. So at the bitter end it seems to be this easy.
To get my .rec files recognized I add this to the registry:-
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.rec]
#="WMI.Backup"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMI.Backup]
#="WMI Backup"
"BrowseInPlace"="1"
To get .txt files recognized I add this to the registry:-
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\txtfile]
"BrowseInPlace"="1"
So "BrowseInPlace"="1" seems to be the nugget.
Seems so unbelievably easy that I'm sure this solution is out there somewhere but I never came across it so thought I'd put it online.
I would be interested to find that it works for others as I fear that this issue may of sent me mad, still can't believe it seems to work.
Hope this helps.
Here are 3 different ways to do what you want:

When using "keyword search" in offline MSDN that came with VS2008, is there any way to exclude unnecessary classes / namespaces that I know beforehand is out of the scope of my search? The search "filter" seems way to broad for this purpose.
To be specific, when I search for a class, say "ListView", I DO NOT want System.Web.UI class to show up as the first suggestion just because it is the first one alphabetically, and instead would like to see System.Windows.Forms.ListView as the document that comes up. I guess I could live with going to search result and browse through to find the intended class, or maybe typing class names with full namespace... But it would make my life easier if I could either temporary or even permanently (I know I won't touch ASP.NET for a while) remove unnecessary classes from the search index.
TIA
After trying several options I found out that manually taking the .HXS files associated with the unneeded namespaces out of the MSDN directory (In my case, C:\Program Files\MSDN\MSDN9.0\1041) seems to do the trick. MSDN document explorer recreates help index on the next launch after the content of the directory was modified. So even in case you need the documentation again, you can restore the help by simply moving the files back into the original folder.
The files I moved to take out System.Web.UI documentations were:
fxref_system.web.ui.adapters.hxs
fxref_system.web.ui.desi_obilecontrols.converters.hxs
fxref_system.web.ui.design.hxs
fxref_system.web.ui.design.mobilecontrols.hxs
fxref_system.web.ui.design.webcontrols.hxs
fxref_system.web.ui.design.webcontrols.webparts.hxs
fxref_system.web.ui.htmlcontrols.hxs
fxref_system.web.ui.hxs
fxref_system.web.ui.mobi_s.adapters.xhtmladapters.hxs
fxref_system.web.ui.mobilecontrols.adapters.hxs
fxref_system.web.ui.mobilecontrols.hxs
fxref_system.web.ui.webcontrols.adapters.hxs
fxref_system.web.ui.webcontrols.hxs
fxref_system.web.ui.webcontrols.webparts.hxs
Was pretty surprised when I saw this kind of somewhat primitive and forcible method to be the most effective...
Type "listview NOT System.Web.UI.ListView" for example - without the quotes :)
