mod_rewrite to parent directory - mod-rewrite

I would like to create a .htaccess file that would do this logic:
If the requested file is not found try to find it in the directory
above.
I don't want to redirect the browser I would just like to internally rewrite the request.
I tried and searched for this a lot but always got stuck because (as I gather from the log) the where I could do the rewrite the path was always already without its per directory prefix. In the example below the .htaccess file is in the lang folder. If the lang specific file is not found it should just take the file from the parent folder. I understand that it is possible to do it by hardcoding the parent directory or by placing the .htaccess higher, but now that I suffered for so long in trying I would be very interested to learn if it was possible at all this way.
strip per-dir prefix: X:/localhost/htdocs/peopletest/public/img/root_cli/lang/en/loginhead.gif -> en/loginhead.gif
applying pattern 'somePattern' to uri 'en/loginhead.gif'
Thanks for the help.

Like this?
RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/%{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/%{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/%{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !-l
RewriteRule /[^/+]/([^/]+)$ $1

Laravel pretty URL

I'm going crazy here! I'm trying to learn Laravel and pretty URLs just don't work.
I have enabled mod_rewrite from my apache config file, I have set AllowOverride to All in my user config file and I have the following in my .htaccess file in public folder of Laravel installation:
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php/$1 [L]
I enter http://localhost/~user/lara/public/index.php/users it works, but with http://localhost/~user/lara/public/users I get 404 Not Found error
The requested URL /Users/user/Sites/lara/public/index.php/users was not found on this server.
You can see that the redirection works fine, as public/users have turned into public/index.php/users but it says not found, even though when I manually enter public/index.php/users it show me the output.
I have read all the related questions on SO, none of the worked for me!
This is most likely caused by the fact that you are changing the document root during a request. From the looks of your URL (with the ~user segment) you are using mod_userdir or something similar, and what these types of plugins do it allow you to map a given URL prefix to a document root that is not the normal one for the server.
As such, you sometimes run into issues like this where the right .htaccess file is found, but its rewritten URL is against the original document root rather than the modified one and so your index.php file cannot be found (maybe, to be honest I don't really know, this is all conjecture). This is also why going directly to index.php/users works - the problem isn't the setup per se, but the mixing of rewrite rules and the change of the document root.
As such, the fix is to use a RewriteBase line, ad the following to the .htccess file:
RewriteBase /~user/lara/public/

mod_rewrite from a subfolder with a querystring to a folder or file

I am trying to redirect from:
http://www.example.com/folder/product.aspx?prodid=146
to
http://www.example.com/folder2/folder3/
The folders referred to here don't really exist. There are other rewrite rules in place which redirect transparently to the actual content.
If I create a directory called 'folder', and put an .htaccess file in it, I can get the redirect working, BUT, other URLs which refer to that folder no longer work. So I have to try and do the redirect from the .htaccess file in the ROOT folder.
I tried this:
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} prodid=146
RewriteRule ^/folder/product.aspx$ /folder2/folder3/? [R]
...but it doesn't work (I get a 404 error). Using identical syntax but omitting the /folder/ from the 2nd line works if the .htaccess is in the folder directory (so I know the above can't be too far off) - but as I said, I cannot do that. I have tried lots of variations but nothing seems to work. Any assistance appreciated.
You need to remove the slash from the start your URL regexp. Like this:
RewriteRule ^folder/product.aspx$ /folder2/folder3/? [R]

mod_rewrite help

I want to hide my directory structure and have all requests served out of a single directory where my files are located. The actual path where my files are stored is: http://mydomain.com/dir1/dir2 but I'd like to be able to just point my links to just http://mydomain.com/myscript.php.
I have multiple script in this directory so I'm not sure how to go about this. Would I need a rule for each and every file I need access to or is there a wildcard that I can use for this?
You can do this:
RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/dir1/dir2%{REQUEST_URI} -f
RewriteRule !^/dir1/dir2/ /dir1/dir2%{REQUEST_URI} [L]
This will rewrite any request, that’s path does not begin with /dir1/dir2/, to the corresponding location with that prefix /dir1/dir2/ but only if there is a file at that destination (see RewriteCond directive).

Rewriting URLs and "faking" folders

I'm trying use mod_rewrite to rewrite URLs from the following:
http://www.site.com/one-two-file.php
to
http://www.site.com/one/two/file.php
The folders don't exist, but "virtually" exist for the rewriting purpose.
What rule do I used in this?
Untested:
RewriteRule ^([^/]+)/([^/]+)/([^/]+)\.php$ $1-$2-$3.php [L]
I can't really understand your explanations about virtuality and existence: one-two-file.php must exist or you'll have nowhere to redirect to.
Update
The previous version works fine when used from an .htaccess file. However, if used from main http.conf file you need to add leading slashes:
RewriteRule ^/([^/]+)/([^/]+)/([^/]+)\.php$ /$1-$2-$3.php [L]
I presume that's why it wasn't working for the OP (he was probably getting a 404 not found status code).

RewriteCond and Alias

I have defined alias that looks like this:
Alias /pictures/sm/ /var/www/my_site/data/_active_thumbnails/
Later in the VirtualHost section have:
DocumentRoot /var/www/my_site/sites/www.my_site.com/htdocs
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^/thumbnails/(.*)\.(jpg|JPG) /images/stg-list-img.png [PT,L]
What I'm trying to do is to display /images/stg-list-img.png placeholder image only if the original image does not exist on the drive.
Right now it's replacing all the images from /thumbnails/. It looks like the RewriteCond is not aware about the Alias. Is there the way to overcome it?
Thanks
REQUEST_FILENAME is only the full filesystem path wnen you use it with your rules in htaccess or -- in per-virtualhost config like you have it's still just the URI.
This is mainly because Apache hasn't yet had a chance to map it to any file at this stage.
You could just add the prefix to your -f test, or all of: put your rules in , adding a Rewritebase /pictures/sm/, and changing your rule's regex...
However, your regex doesn't currently make any sense. If the Alias matters and is /pictures/sm, the rewriterule could never match with ^/thumbnails.
