I'm current attempting to update VS 2008 to allow me to access my company's new TFS 2012 instance after a recent migration.
Unfortunately, I receive the following message despite meeting all prerequisites:
None of the products that are addressed by this software update are installed
on this computer. Click Cancel to exit setup."
I have all of the prerequisites (VS 2008 SP 1, VS 2008 Team Explorer, and .NET 2.0 SP 2) installed.

I had the same problem.
Reinstallation of VS2008 SP1 was the solution for me. No need to remove, just re-run the SP1 installer and then KB2673642 VS2008 Compatibility Pack will go through.

If I remember correctly, profiling tools (of which the performance explorer is part of) are shipped with Premium and Ultimate versions only.
edit: I really should have mentioned that I was talking about the 2010 editions of VS. My mistake.
I've seen How can I check what version/edition of Visual Studio is installed programmatically?, but the question remains, what will I find if the version installed is the 2010 Ultimate or Premium?
The answer selected as correct says "go to the registry and find":

Ok so I went to the registry on a machine with 2010 Ultimate and on
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0\Setup\VS\
I've only found VSTS so, Ultimate is covered.
VSTS is the name of Ultimate in the registry
(But premium is still a question).
(And that's why this isnt an accepted answer yet).

I've recently installed Visual Studio 2010 Professional (for a university project). We have to design a dummy interface for a system modelling scrum management (i.e. to allow users to create and plan agile projects). We don't need to do any real coding, just design the interface - however, if we choose, we can add in a little C# (we've only programmed in Java and we are at an elementary level, which is why there is so little coding).

I've heard that I can't get rid of the SQL Server Compact as it is needed for Visual Studio to run. I'm also aware that the Visual Studio 2010 Professional - ENU IS the actual program. However, after these, bearing in mind my needs for the program, what can I uninstall?
I'll answer my own question. Someone actually left a comment on what to do, but they seem to have deleted it. I don't remember who it was - apologies to them.
I was using Visual Studio 2010 Professional as we got it free through our university's connection to the Microsoft Developer Network.
However, a free version of this software without a lot of what was unnecessary for me exists - Visual Studio Express. It can be found at:

I think the registry would be your best bet. I've found the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\InstalledProducts
Under this there's a key for each product installed:
Crystal Reports
...
Microsoft Silverlight Projects
...
Team Explorer
Team System - Database Edition
...
I don't know whether there's enough there to go on to uniquely identify each version, but it might get you most of the way there.
