I have be driven mad. Sometimes I press F5 to debug, and I often press shift+F5 to exit debug, but it restart debug(shortcut of restart debug is ctrl+shift+F5). If I click some var it will navigate its definition. I just find I must press ctrl again lonely will disable it.
Anyone know why? Thx.
It's a known issue.
There are indeed multiple Connect tickets (1, 2, 3, 4) on this problem. The latest one states:
Thanks for reaching out to us. The original bug is indeed fixed in our current internal builds but that fix was not included in VS 2010 SP1. Keep an eye out for announcements of pre-release builds of the next version of Visual Studio as they will have the fix in them.
Thanks!

This basically sounds like "it won't get fix, but VS11 shouldn't have the problem anymore."
A good workaround is to disable the Ctrl+Shift+F5 shortcut for restarting debugging under Tools -> Customize -> Keyboard....

I have the problem that Visual Studio (or maybe Resharper?) removes line breaks when I try to start my application. This happens in a way that when I press F5 or click on the run button with the mouse that a line break at the line where the cursor was the last time will be removed which is extremely annoying.
I have not tried so many things yet because I really don't know where to start. I never experienced this problem before and was always working with the same setup:
Visual Studio 2010
Resharper 6.1.1
Other plugins I use but which were installed after the problem (so I think they should not be related to the problem):
AnkhSvn
TeamCity
Example:
Before:
public void test(){
int x = 5;
}
After running the solution:
public void test(){
int x = 5;}
Edit: This issue seems to be related to Resharper - so hopefully they will be able to fix this issue as I never had this with any previous versions. (http://devnet.jetbrains.net/message/5456038#5456038).
This is a problem with Dexexpress Dim#ster patch. If you delete licenses.licx and compile in the source code. Not happend. The problem is when you open a form and licenses.licx is created again. Is you uninstall the patch this dissapear. But I dont understand why deactivating Resharper the problem gone too. But without patch and resharper + devexpress trial working fine.
The problem is the patch.
I'd do this before reinstalling:
Uninstall All plugins
Type devenv.exe /resetsettings
Now try and use your code as described without plugins. Slowly add back your plugins if its ok and check after each is installed if the problem manifests itself. if not it was some setting in one and its now gone, if it comes back after one is installed you have a good thing to look at.
Just blatting the environment means you'll never find out whats causing it, which would annoy me :)
Have a look at ReSharper's Braces-settings: http://www.jetbrains.com/resharper/features/code_formatting.html#Code_Style_Configuration_and_Sharing (1st screenshot). Try changing those settings according to your needs.
If you're a member of a team, maybe someone else enabled sharing of "code style settings". See the previous link for that, 2nd screenshot.
Does it also occur when you just build the project?
In the build options try doing clean project, then open close the program. After this do a rebuild project. Also make sure the project is in debug mode for testing =)!
Delete the settings resharper in solution. Helped me.
I know that this question is a little bit old. But this may help anyone who encountered the same error with resharper and devexpress controls. I've tried all the above instructions, but the nothing works. BTW I'm using visual studio 2017 with resharper 2017.2.2 and devexpress 17.2.3
This what works for me.
Open build&run window in resharper. Click Resharper>Windows>Build&Run to open the the window then select "Enable 'Resharper Build'. Open any file in text editor and move the cursor at the end of any line of codes or on any empty line and try to build the project to see if it works.
Hope this will help.
At this point I would suggest uninstalling and reinstalling VS. Then add ReSharper and any of your extensions one at a time.
I had the same problem. I use this prebuilt-event script
break>$(ProjectDir)\Properties\licenses.licx
I have ReSharper 10.0.2, VS2013, DevExpress Components and VisualSVN.
I have been a fan of the new "Navigate To" feature that was released with Visual Studio 2010 since I saw Scott Hanselman using it in one of his presentation.
For some unknown reason, it randomly stops working.
I hit "Ctrl + ,", type what I am looking for and then nothing happens.
It seems to wait for something and the window shows no progression in the research.
The only way I found to fix this is to restart Visual Studio and wait for the problem to happen again.
Does anyone have any idea why Visual Studio is behaving like this and how I can fix this?
I got this working by simply selecting an item from the Search Items dropdown. Once you do that, the search starts working again as expected.
I got this working again by uninstalling ReShaper. It fixed some other things like the solution wide search aswell. I'm not so happy about the solution though...
Any chance you're using resharper, powercommands, or productivity power tools?
I suspect the issue is related to one of those (I have the same issue), but since it's difficult to reproduce, it's hard to test that.
In Visual Studio 2010 Professional Edition (Version 10.0.30319.1), I noticed tonight that for some reason I kept getting a wider window for quick find. I verified by exiting, restarting and retesting the bug conditions.
Steps to Reproduce
Open existing project (I don't think it matters which one)
Press ctrlf and give it something to search for (>?) in "current document"
Press enter
Press ctrlf
Press enter
Go to Step 4.
Can you reproduce a slowly expanding quick find window? Do I have some sort of wacky bugged out system?
A bug has been opened on Connect Tracker.
This has been fixed:
One of our top reported Microsoft Connect issues since RTM has been that the Find and Replace dialog grows 16px on each use. On repeated use, this can quickly take up your entire screen real estate. We now have a patch available for this issue.
I followed the steps above using Visual Studio Version 10.0.30319.1 RTMRel and could not reproduce your bug.
EDIT #3 : Microsoft has released a 'fix' to this problem which is available here. I haven't had the time to test it, but I those who want to are welcome to leave their feedback here !
Sometimes when I run an application from Visual Studio and it crashes or I stop it using the stop button in the debug menu (Debug->Stop Debugging (Shift-F5)), the console of said application stays open... and never closes. I cannot close it by clicking the 'x' button in the top right corner. I cannot kill the process as it is not even listed in taskmgr.
I have seen this problem documented in different places on the web, but no solution so far.
I am running on windows XP SP3, using visual studio 2008 w/ SP1.
1- What could be causing this ?
2- Is there a fix ?
thanks alot.
JC
EDIT: There is no MyApp.vshost.exe process to close, and closing visual studio does not close the console either. Worse even, if I try to restart my computer windows will hang and never close, I need to do a forced shut down.
EDIT #2 : (from Brad Sullivan, Program Manager - Visual Studio Debugger on March 2nd)
[...] this issue is likely not in Visual Studio since it also occurs in scenarios where Visual Studio is not present. We are in the process of handing over our investigation to the Windows Servicing team.
But for now, removing the KB978037 update and it's related files seems to work.
This is a bug introduced in security update KB978037. Back out this update and you'll be back to normal.

There are a couple of things that could be happening here. Try closing down the following process and see which one, if any close down the Console application as well.
The Hosting Process: Typically named YourExecutable.vshost.exe
Visual Studio
If closing the hosting process fixes the issue then one quick work around is to disable the hosting process itself.
Right Click on Project -> Properties -> Debug -> Uncheck the hosting process
If closing down Visual Studio fixes the problem then it's potentially a bug in Visual Studio. Please file a bug on connect.

When I press F5, everything compiles fine, but when the app is to be started, VS crashes, showing the "Just in time debugger" dialog.
More than one (similar) solution has this problem. A new solution containing just a form, works. This problem started out of the blue, I have made no changes to the environment as far as I can understand.
I can start the app without debugging (ctrl+F5), and then attach the debugger.
I'm using VS 2008 sp 1.
Never seen this issue, have you tried turning off all your plug-ins like reSharper, CodeRush, etc.?
Update: When worst comes to worst I usually try this command line.
devenv.exe /ResetSettings
devenv.exe /ResetSkipPkgs
devenv.exe /Setup
try all these you can do them all at once or do them individually it is up to you. But be aware that you will be deleting all your settings that you have customized in to Visual Studio, so you may want to back them up.
The last thing you can try is this, to see if the problem is with something weird that is running.
devenv.exe /SafeMode
Starts Visual Studio in safe mode, and loads only the default environment and services, and shipped versions of third-party packages.
I've found the problem now. I had "Step framework source" enabled, which somehow broke the debugger (strange though, because it usually works). Turning that off, made me debug as usual again.
If you have undocked windows in debug layout search KB960075 on code.msdn.microsoft.com (can't add hrefs).
Do you have CLI.exe error issues? Check your event log. I've had the same issue and simply re-staged my machine out of panic since I was so near a deadline. I assumed that it was an issue with the registry and couldn't find an answer.
try repair or reinstall, don't waste time findin' the reason of the problem
I had the same problem, out of the blue the IDE would crash when I started to debug. Happened with any existing project that I opened, even the visual studio samples. I created a new project, just a blank dialog, ran it, and all was good. After that, the problem went away and I was able to debug again.
This happened to me just now, after my computer rebooted itself last night. When I was pressing F5 the app started but instantly shut down and the VS IDE crashed.
To fix it: Debug->Delete All Breakpoints. It worked for me.
