How to pass query parameters through force_ssl - ruby-on-rails-3.1

In Rails 3.1 I am using force_ssl when authenticating. This seems to cause a problem when I have a redirect uri appended as a query string because it is stripped in the http -> https protocol switch. If I start on https protocol the query string stays intact and the redirect happens just fine.
Any ideas on how to preserve query strings through the force_ssl protocol switch?

The latest version of rails has it fixed https://github.com/rmm5t/rails/commit/391e6a47dbd46fdce0a472819e8d27792cc91984
If you have to use Rails 3.1 you will have to create your own force ssl before filter
before_filter :check_ssl
def check_ssl
redirect_to({:protocol => 'https'}.merge(params), :flash => flash) unless request.ssl?
end

Add support for rendering views to a rails api only application

I built an api only rails app, but since i'm using a 3rd party email service, I need to be able to render the email template into a string to pass it to the mailing service wrapper gem. So far any attempt to render templates into a string returns an empty string, and i suspect it is because the application is configured to be API only. Ho do I add support to rendering templates into a string?
If this is not the case, please let me know. I'm using postmark mail service. postmark-rails gem, which integrates into standard rails mailers didn't work at all, and plain postmark gem (which uses postmark API instead of postmark SMTP server) works fine, but now my problem is producing the proper html for the email.
this is what I'm trying:
html = render_to_string(
partial: "transfer_mailer/transfer.html.erb",
locals: {
:#body => #body,
:#campaign => #campaign,
:#chat => #chat
}
)
but it returns empty string.
My setup involves Rails 5.0.1, ruby 2.3.1p112 (2016-04-26 revision 54768) [x86_64-linux], Sidekiq 4.2.7, and in production im using nginx/1.10.2 and Phusion Passenger 5.1.1. Production environment is deployed in an azure virtual machine, and I added both inbound and outbound rules for allowing traffic through ports 25, 465, 2525, and 587.
Any help would be really appreciated.
Looking at the docs for render_to_string, it looks like the path doesn't need to include .html.erb, so maybe removing that will fix it.
You can see here for some example code:
In your case, it would be:
render_to_string(
partial: '/transfer_mailer/transfer',
locals: {
:#body => #body,
:#campaign => #campaign,
:#chat => #chat
},
layout: false
)
Also make sure the partial filename starts with an underscore, even though you don't include it with render_to_string or render calls.
There is the other way to use render_to_string for resolving your issue. Please see the code below.
#body = XXX
#campaign = YYY
#chat = ZZZ
html = render_to_string(
file: 'transfer_mailer/transfer.html.erb'
)
Hope it helps.

Typo3 behind Proxy

I'm trying to get a Typo3 (6.2) instance running behind a (forwarding) proxy (squid). I have set
'HTTP' => array(
'adapter' => 'curl',
'proxy_host' => 'my.local.proxy.ip',
'proxy_port' => '8080',
)
as well as
'SYS' => array(
'curlProxyServer' => 'http://my.local.proxy.ip:8080',
'curlUse' => '1'
)
The proxy doesn't ask for credentials.
When I try to update the extension list, I get the error message
Update Extension List
Could not access remote resource http://repositories.typo3.org/mirrors.xml.gz.
If I try Get preconfigured distribution, it says
1342635425
Could not access remote resource http://repositories.typo3.org/mirrors.xml.gz.
According to the proxy log, the server doesn't even try to connect to the proxy.
I can easily download the file using wget on the command line.
Ok, I've investigated he issue a bit more and from what I can tell, the Typo3 doesn't even try to connect anywhere.
I used tcpdump and wireshark to analyze the network traffic. The site claims to have tried sending a http-Request to repositories.typo3.org so I'd expect to find either a proxy connection attempt or a DNS query followed by an attempt to connect to that IP. (Of course, the latter is known not to work.) However, none of this happens.
I've tried some slight changes in the variable curlProxyServer. The documentation clearly states
String: Proxyserver as http://proxy:port/. Deprecated since 4.6 - will be removed in TYPO3 CMS 7. See below for http options.
So I tried adding the trailing "/" and removing the "http://" - no change. I'm confident there's no problem whatsoever regarding the proxy as the proxy isn't even contacted and has been working perfectly fine for everything else for years.
The error message comes from \TYPO3\CMS\Extensionmanager\Utility\Repository\Helper::fetchFile(). This one uses \TYPO3\CMS\Core\Utility\GeneralUtility::getUrl() to get the actual file content.
According to your setting, it should use the first part of the function, because curlUse is set and the URL starts with http or https.
So what you would need to do now is to throw some debug lines in the code and check at what point the request goes wrong.
Look at the source code, three possibilities come to mind:
The curl proxy parameters does not support a scheme, thus it should be 'curlProxyServer' => 'my.local.proxy.ip:8080',.
Some redirect does not work.
Your proxy has problems with https, because the TYPO3 TER should be queried over https.

Change phoenix endpoint url host at runtime

Does anyone know of a way of changing the :host of the Phoenix application endpoint dynamically on every request?
Specifically to support multiple domains on a single phoenix app, i want to change the host in the endpoint based on the host in the connection object.
Am trying something on the lines of
conn = Map.get_and_update(conn.private.phoenix_endpoint[:url], :host, fn (_) -> "ll.com" end)
or
Keyword.put(conn.private.phoenix_endpoint.config(:url), :host, conn.host)
But am not quite correct.
Wouldn't it just be a value you assign the :to keyword in the redirect?
def index(conn, params) do
redirect conn, to: params[:location] # or whatever
end
The master_proxy package offers some useful tools to support multiple sites.

Simplest method of enforcing HTTPS for Heroku Ruby Sinatra app

I have an app I created on Heroku which is written in Ruby (not rails) and Sinatra.
It is hosted on the default herokuapp domain so I can address the app with both HTTP and HTTPS.
The app requests user credentials which I forward on to an HTTPS call so the forwarding part is secure.
I want to ensure my users always connect securely to my app so the credentials aren't passed in clear text.
Despite lots of research, I've not found a solution to this simple requirement.
Is there a simple solution without changing my app to Ruby rails or otherwise?
Thanks,
Alan
I use a helper that looks like this:
def https_required!
if settings.production? && request.scheme == 'http'
headers['Location'] = request.url.sub('http', 'https')
halt 301, "https required\n"
end
end
I can then add it to any single route I want to force to https, or use it in the before filter to force on a set of urls:
before "/admin/*" do
https_required!
end
Redirect in a Before Filter
This is untested, but it should work. If not, or if it needs additional refinement, it should at least give you a reasonable starting point.
before do
redirect request.url.sub('http', 'https') unless request.secure?
end

Testing Sinatra's redirect back in rspec

I am running a sinatra app and have a testing suite setup using rspec 2.7.0 and webrat 0.7.3 (both the most recent versions). I have an extensive set of tests for all of my request actions and it seems to be working fine. Today I discovered Sinatra's redirect back request-level helper and implemented it in a couple of areas of my application that were rendering forms with get requests which were taking parameters.
The nice thing about the redirect back helper is that if I have an action say:
get '/login' do
#used_var = params[:var]
haml :login
end
Which renders a form, I can have validation on the post request receiving the form:
post '/login' do
# pretend User.authenticate pulls back a user entry from the database if there
# is a valid username/password combination
unless User.authenticate(params[:username], params[:password]).nil?
redirect '/content'
else
flash[:notice] = "Invalid username/password combo"
redirect back # will redirect back to the get '/login' request
end
end
And if the form doesn't validate properly, it will redirect back to the page with the from and retain any parameters that were passed in without me having to worry about storing it to a session variable. The only problem is that rspec doesn't seem to want to play nicely with the redirect back helper. i.e. if I have a spec action that does this:
it 'should redirect to login when invalid username/password combo is received.' do
get '/login', :var => 'value'
fill_in 'username', :with => 'invalid_username'
fill_in 'password', :with => 'invalid_password'
click_button 'Submit'
last_response.should be_redirect; follow_redirect!
last_request.url.should include("/login")
end
The spec fails to pass because for some reason it seems that rspec or webrat isn't picking up on the redirect back helper and is instead redirecting the request back to the root url for my application ('/').
What I want to know is whether there is a way to get rspec to redirect to the proper location in these instances? The actual application functions as expected when I test it with my browser (it redirects me to the first page with parameters), but the rspec tests don't pass properly.
try to pass :referer => '/login' to your requests, so redirect_back can know where the actually 'back' is
Apparently this was a bug in rack, and it appears to have been fixed with the release of rack 1.3.0. I tested this spec with rack 1.2.5 (most recent version prior to 1.3.0 release), and it failed, but upon upgrading to 1.3, it started passing.
After some digging around, pretty sure that this pull request (here is the commit) was the change that fixed it.
So it is no longer an issue in rack ~> 1.3.
