most efficient way to validate us zip code in Flex - algorithm

I have a Flex application that needs to be able to validate hundreds of zip codes fairly quickly. I also want to keep the memory space used by the app as small as possible.
Here are a few solutions my team has come up with. Any thoughts on them? Any other ideas?
Check each zip code via...
array of valid zip codes
array of invalid zip codes
soap call to a web service that validates zip codes
query a database table
a tree - 5 nodes high, nodes at the bottom would have boolean values of whether or not the zip is valid. The zip code of 12345 would go from the root to it's first child, to it's second... you get the point
validate first 3 numbers via array of valid USPS SCFs then the last two digits via array specific to that SCF.

Depends on what you are looking for. Do you want to validate the format of the zip code (ie. that it is 5 digits long) or do you want to ensure the zip code is a valid US zip code. I will venture a guess that it is the latter. Take a look at the USPS address API (https://www.usps.com/business/webtools-address-information.htm?). I am willing to bet that will be perfect and less overhead then managing a DB or updating an array and managing all the xxxxx+4 zip codes.

Hash in Laravel

there. I'm preparing a Laravel test, and there's a question that I think is not correct.
When you should use a hash?
The available answers are:
When you want to compress the contents of a file.
When you want to securely store credit card information so you can use it later.
When you want to secure sen a password over email.
When you want to identify the contents of a file without storing the entire file
Since hashing is for encrypting passwords (not to send'em over email) none of this answers seem to be correct. What do you think?
Option 4. Identifying contents of a file.
Hash is a function which is supposed to return a constant length output for every input. The other property of hash functions is that for any input a it always returns the same value b. It means that if you provide file a and store its hash b then whenever you supply file a again you're going to get hash b. The last property is that for different inputs c, d and hash function f, f(c) should be different from f(d) (or the chances of outputs being equal should be near 0)
In real case scenario, you can often find hashes when downloading software and want to verify if the file you've downloaded is correct. The developer puts a hash of the executable on their site. You are downloading the file and calculate checksum (hash) just to compare it with the one from the website. If it matches, then you know it's the same (as long as the hash algorithm is not known to have collisions...).
It is quite good approach to comparing file contents, bc hashes are taking much less space than actual files.

Snapshot testing PDFs [duplicate]

I am generating and storing PDFs in a database.
The pdf data is stored in a text field using Convert.ToBase64String(pdf.ByteArray)
If I generate the same exact PDF that already exists in the database, and compare the 2 base64strings, they are not the same. A big portion is the same, but it appears about 5-10% of the text is different each time.
What would make 2 pdfs different if both were generated using the same method?
This is a problem because I can't tell if the PDF was modified since it was last saved to the db.
Edit: The 2 pdfs visually appear exactly the same when viewing the actual pdf, but the base64string of the bytes are different
Two PDFs that look 100% the same visually can be completely different under the covers. PDF producing programs are free to write the word "hello" as a single word or as five individual letters written in any order. They are also free to draw the lines of a table first followed by the cell contents, or the cell contents first, or any combination of these such as one cell at a time.
If you are actually programmatically creating the PDFs and you create two PDFs using completely identical code you still won't get files that are 100% identical. There's a couple of reasons for this, the most obvious is that PDFs support creation and modification dates. These will obviously change depending on when they are created. You can override these (and confuse everyone else so I don't recommend this) using something like this:

However, PDFs also support a unique identifier in the trailer's /ID entry. To the best of my knowledge iText has no support for overriding this parameter. You could duplicate your PDF, change this manually and then calculate your differences and you might get closer to a comparison.
Then there's fonts. When subsetting fonts, producers create a unique internal name based on the original name and an arbitrary selection of six uppercase ASCII letters. So for the font Calibri the font's name could be JLXWHD+Calibri one time and SDGDJT+Calibri another time. iText doesn't support overriding of this because you'd probably do more harm than good. These internal names are used to avoid font subset collisions.
So the short answer is that unless you are comparing two files that are physical duplicates of each other you can't perform a direct comparison on their binary contents. The long answer is that you can tweak some of the PDF entries to remove unique parts for comparison only but you'd probably be doing more work than it would take to just re-store the file in the database.

What order of files is used for hashing pieces in torrent

Torrent specification says for "peices" field:
pieces: string consisting of the concatenation of all 20-byte SHA1 hash values, one per piece
But in case of directory there are multiple files. So to be broken to pieces files must be taken in some order. When I use bencode editor on existing torrents I see files come definitely not in alphabetical order, nor they comes in last modification order. But two different tools generate torrents with identical hashes. So there must be some defined order. But I still cannot find this in torrent specification.
When it comes to piece hashes, the metafile creation sees the content as one big blob, as if the files from info.files were concatenated. The order in info.files is a choice of the client, µTorrent defaults to "order by size" since quite a few versions, other clients sort by relative path names.
Info hashes can and will differ when different creators choose different file orders, just like with piece size choices.

SHA-1 hash for storing Files

After reading this, it sounds like a great idea to store files using the SHA-1 for the directory.
I have no idea what this means however, all I know is that SHA-1 and MD5 are hashing algorithms. If I calculate the SHA-1 hash using this ruby script, and I change the file's content (which changes the hash), how do I know where the file is stored then?
My question is then, what are the basics of implementing a SHA-1/file-storage system?
If all of the files are changing content all the time, is there a better solution for storing them, or do you just have to keep updating the hash?
I'm just thinking about how to create a generic file storing system like GoogleDocs, Flickr, Youtube, DropBox, etc., something that you could reuse in different environments (such as storing PubMed journal articles or Cramster homework assignments and tests, or just images like on Flickr). I'd probably store them on Amazon EC2. Just some system so I can say "this is how I'll 99% of the time do file storing from now on", so I can stop thinking about building a solid/consistent way to store files and get onto some real problems.
First of all, if the contents of the files are changing, filename from SHA-digest approach is not very suitable, because the name and location of the file in filesystem must change when the contents of the file changes.
Basically you first compute a SHA-1 or MD5 digest (= hash value) from the contents of the file.
When you have a digest, for example, 00e4f56c0de1c61fdb926e79e8a0a65bd12930c9, you generate a file location and filename from the digest. For example, you split the first few characters from the digest to directory structure and rest of the characters to file name. For example:
00e4f56c0de1c61fdb926e79e8a0a65bd12930c9 => some/path/00/e4/f5/6c0de1c61fdb926e79e8a0a65bd12930c9.txt
This way you only need to store the SHA-1 digest of the file to database. You can then always find out the right location and the name of the file.
Directories usually also have maximum number of files they can contain, for example maximum of 32000 subdirectories and files per directory. A directory structure based on this kind of hashing makes it unlikely that you store too many files to same directory. Also using hashing like this make sure that every directory has about the same number of files, you won't get into situation where all your files are in same directory.
The idea is not to change the file content, but rather its name (and path), by using a hash value.
Changing the content with a hash would be disastrous since a hash is normally not reversible.
I'm not sure of the motivivation for using a hash rather than the file name (or even rather than a long random number), but here are a few advantages of the hash appraoch:
the file names on the disk is uniform
the upper or lower parts of the hash value can be used to name the directories and hence distribute the files relatively uniformely
the name becomes a code, making it difficult for someone to
a) guess a file name
b) categorize pictures (would someone steal the hard drive content)
be able to retrieve the filename and location from the file contents itself (assuming the hash comes from such content. (not quite sure which use case would involve this... a bit contrieved...)
The general interest of using a hash is that unlike a file name, a hash is meaningless, and therefore one would require the database to relate images and "bibliographic" type data (name of uploader, date of upload, tags, ...)
In thinking about it, re-reading the referenced SO response, I don't really see much of an advantage of a hash, as compared to, say, a random number...
Furthermore... some hashes produce a numeric value, typically expressed in hexadecimal (as seen in the refernced SO question) and this could be seen as wasteful, by making the file names longer than they need to be, and hence putting more stress on the file system (bigger directories...)
One advantage I see with storing files using their hash is that the file data only needs to be stored once and then can be referenced multiple times within your database. This will save you space if you have a different users uploading the exact same file.
However the downside to this is when a user deletes what they think is there file from your app, you can't just physically delete the file from disk because other users that uploaded the same exact file may still be using it.
The idea is that you need to come up with a name for the photo, and you probably want to scatter the files among a number of directories. One easy way to come up with a unique name is to use the hash.
So the beginning of the hash was peeled off for a multi-level directory structure and the rest of the hash was used for a filename for the jpg.
This has the additional benefit of detecting duplicate uploads.

How do you manage the String Translation Process?

I am working on a Software Project that needs to be translated into 30 languages. This means that changing any string incurs into a relatively high cost. Additionally, translation does not happen overnight, because the translation package needs to be worked by different translators, so this might take a while.
Adding new features is cumbersome somehow. We can think up all the Strings that will be needed before we actually code the UI, but sometimes still we need to add new strings because of bug fixes or because of an oversight.
So the question is, how do you manage all this process? Any tips in how to ease the impact of translation in the software project? How to rule the strings, instead of having the strings rule you?
EDIT: We are using Java and all Strings are internationalized using Resource Bundles, so the problem is not the internationalization per-se, but the management of the strings.

That said - managing the translations themselves is hard. The problem is that you'll be using the same piece of text across multiple pages. Your framework may not, however, support only having that piece of text in one file (resource files in asp.net, for instance, encourage you to have one resource file per language).
The way that we found to work with things was to have a central database repository of translations. We created a small .net application to import translations from resource files into that database and to export translations from that database to resource files. There is, thus, an additional step in the build process to build the resource files.
The other issue you're going to have is passing translations to your translation vendor and back. There are a couple ways for this - see if your translation vendor is willing to accept XML files and return properly formatted XML files. This is, really, one of the best ways, since it allows you to automate your import and export of translation files. Another alternative, if your vendor allows it, is to create a website to allow them to edit the translations.
In the end, your answer for translations will be the same for any other process that requires repetition and manual work. Automate, automate, automate. Automate every single thing that you can. Copy and paste is not your friend in this scenario.

There are a number of major issues that need to be considered when internationalizing an application.
Not all strings are created equally. Depending upon the language, the length of a sentence can change significantly. In some languages, it can be half as long and in others it can be triple the length. Make sure to design your GUI widgets with enough space to handle strings that are larger than your English strings.
Translators are typically not programmers. Do not expect the translators to be able to read and maintain the correct file formats for resource files. You should setup a mechanism where you can transform the translated data round trip to your resource files from something like an spreadsheet. One possibility is to use XSL filters with Open Office, so that you can save to Resource files directly in a spreadsheet application. Also, translators or translation service companies may already have their own databases, so it is good to ask about what they use and write some tools to automate.
You will need to append data to strings - don't pretend that you will never have to or you will always be able to put the string at the end. Make sure that you have a string formatter setup for replacing placeholders in strings. Furthermore, make sure to document what are typical values that will be replaced for the translators. Remember, the order of the placeholders may change in different languages.
Name your i8n string variables something that reflects their meaning. Do you really want to be looking up numbers in a resource file to find out what is the contents of a given string. Developers depend on being able to read the string output in code for efficiency a lot more than they often realize.
Don't be afraid of code-generation. In my current project, I have written a small Java program that is called by ant that parses all of the keys of the default language (master) resource file and then maps the key to a constant defined in my localization class. See below. The lines in between the //---- comments is auto-generated. I run the generator every time I add a string.

The approach above offers a few benefits.
Since your string key is now defined as a field, your IDE should support code completion for it. This will save you a lot of type. It get's really frustrating looking up every key name and fixing typos every time you want to print a string.
Someone please correct me if I am wrong. By loading all of the strings into memory at static instantiation (as in the example) will result in a quicker load time at the cost of additional memory usage. I have found the additional amount of memory used is negligible and worth the trade off.
The localised projects I've worked on had 'string freeze' dates. After this time, the only way strings were allowed to be changed was with permission from a very senior member of the project management team.
It isn't exactly a perfect solution, but it did enable us to put defects regarding strings on hold until the next release with a valid reason. Once the string freeze has occured you also have a valid reason to deny adding brand new features to the project on 'spur of the moment' decisions. And having the permission come from high up meant that middle managers would have no power to change specs on your :)
If available, use a database for this. Each string gets an id, and there is either a table for each language, or one table for all with the language in a column (depending on how the site is accessed the performance dictates which is better). This allows updates from translators without trying to manage code files and version control details. Further, it's almost trivial to run reports on what isn't translated, and keep track of what was an autotranslation (engine) vs a real human translation.
If no database, then I stick each language in a separate file so version control issues are reduced. But the structure is basically the same - each string has an id.

Not only did we use a database instead of the vaunted resource files (I have never understood why people use something like that which is a pain to manage, when we have such good tools for dealing with databases), but we also avoided the need to tag things in the application (forgetting to tag controls with numbers in VB6 Forms was always a problem) by using reflection to identify the controls for translation. Then we use an XML file which translates the controls to the phrase IDs from the dictionary database.
Although the mapping file had to be managed, it could still be managed independent of the build process, and the translation of the application was actually possible by end-users who had rights in the database.
The solution we came up to so far is having a small application in Excel that reads all the property files, and then shows a matrix with all the translations (languages as headers, keys as rows). It is quite evident what is missing then. This is send to the translators. When it comes back, then the sheet can be processed to generate the same property bundles back again. So far it has eased the pain somewhat, but I wonder what else is around.

I put in a makefile target that finds all the .properties files and puts them in a zip file to send off to the translators. I offered to send them just diffs, but for some reason they want the whole bundle of files each time. I think they have their own system for tracking just differences, because they charge us based on how many strings have changed from one time to the next. When I get their delivery back, I manually diff all their files with the previous delivery to see if anything unexpected has changed - one time all the PT_BR (Brazillian Portuguese) strings changed, and it turns out they'd used a PT_PT (Portuguese Portuguese) translator for that batch in spite of the order for PT_BR.
In Java, internationalization is accomplished by moving the strings to resource bundles ... the translation process is still long and arduous, but at least it's separated from the process of producing the software, releasing service packs etc. One thing that helps is to have a CI system that repackages everything any time changes are made. We can have a new version tested and out in a matter of minutes whether it's a code change, new language pack or both.
For starters, I'd use default strings in case a translation is missing. For example, the English or Spanish value.
Secondly, you might want to consider a web app or something similar for your translators to use. This requires some resources upfront, but at least you won't need to send files around and it will be obvious for the translators which strings are new, etc.
