When I moved my working CI webapp from my localhost to a webhosting, I encounter a "duplicating and appending URL" problem.
In my localhost, this works (shows the login page): http://mylocal/someapp/ --> which will redirect to http://mylocal/someapp/index.php/login
However, after migrating to webhosting, trying to access it like this: http://webhosting.com/someapp/, somehow it automatically appends to be
http://webhosting.com/someapp/%20//webhosting.com/someapp/index.php/login
My .htaccess contains nothing (works on localhost)
In config.php,
$config['base_url']= '';
The home controller which will redirect to the login controller (then the login view) looks like this:

Use http:// prefix before base url in $config['base_url'];
e.g.
$config['base_url']=http://localhost/islam;
$config['base_url']= '';
should contain the base url of your website. i think that's the problem.
should be:
$config['base_url']= 'http://yoursite.com/';
Found the answer my self. Turns out that some webhostings are not treating CI refresh properly.
header("Refresh:0;url=...");
instead, it only wants this:
header("Location: ...");
So, I changed url_helper.php (system/helpers/url_helper.php line:543), from
case 'refresh'
to
case 'xxxrefresh'
so that it always skips the header refresh and only use header location.
I don't know if this the proper solution, but it works on my website.
Test your webhosting characteristics before you migrate your CodeIgniter codes from your local machine.

I had the same "duplication problem" with a local insallation. Here is my solution: set your base URL in application/config/config.php, for example:
$config['base_url'] = 'http://localhost/ci/';
It is important to add the http:// or https:// prefix to fix the "duplication problem". Of course, the trailing slash is also necessary.

I'm implementing redirect to previous page after login and logout.
So in each methods of controller I've saved session like as follow.
$this->session->set_userdata('previous_page', current_url());
And after successful login and logout, I'm calling a library method as follows.

I would ensure the session was set. Like this;
if($this->_CI->session->userdata('previous_page')) {
show_error('The session is set');
}
If you don't see the error, the session isn't set. Then you know this isn't where the problem lies.
No need to store Previous URL in session.
In core php you can get previously visited URL in following server variable
$_SERVER['HTTP_REFERER'];
Same can be achieved in CodeIgniter as

i was create codeigniter controller like this :

Because of this line: parent::Controller(), I assume that you are using CodeIgniter 1. Since you are building pages like home and login, I assume that you are starting building a new website. If my assumptions are right, I suggest you using the latest CodeIgniter (v2.1.0 at the moment, required PHP 5.1.6 or newer). You can grab a copy at CodeIgniter Home Page.
First of all, I think you should check your error reporting level. It should be something like error_reporting(E_ALL); for debugging. If not yet, turn it on and run the code again. Maybe you will get your own answer after that :)
After that, you should try the code below for your constructor to check that your home controller process as you expected.
function Home()

parent::Controller();
echo 'Home Class Initialized';
}
It should at least show 404 page. If it doesn't print out anything then we need more information. Maybe you should turn on logging and analyze your log files: look for /application/config/config.php: $config['log_threshold'] = 2;
If it print out 'Home Class Initialized' follow by a 404 message: please check if your controller have something like:

{
echo 'Invoke default method';
}
If not yet, please add one. You may also want to take a look at using your own default method here
If it still a 404 then sorry, I have no idea. Maybe you should post more code.
If it print out 'Home Class Initialized' only: good. Now try this

Other: if you use this $this->load->model('Home_Model');, I think you will have to call home_model like this $this->Home_Model->foo(); or there will be error access to NULL
I need to use a subdomain as a class. ie, instead of:

but nothing relevant. I need it to be so that if another town is added to the db, it'll resolve that new town and its details.
I see many discussions about rewrites, redirects etc, but I specifically need to use the subdomain town name as the class variable. If possible, in an idea world, I could use both together, but I doubt that's possible?
I've had it going fine in plain old php for a couple of years now; now I want to upgrade to codeigniter without ruining my old structure if possible (plus there's a good reason for it).

You can do it. I'm doing it for one of my projects.
In the constructor of your controller, just explode the current url and get the subdomain and pass it in your method as a variable

I recently upgraded a site from CodeIgniter 1.7.x to 2.0.3. About the same time someone in my organization requested we add some pages to the site. Underneath a section. In the old version of the site I used some workarounds in the controller to break up a longer URL. But in version 2 I see that I should be able to use subdirectories in the controllers folder to do it in a more proper way. After looking all over the place I've tried all sorts of routing declarations and fiddled with all sorts of things. Hopefully I'm doing something simple, wrong, or perhaps someone has seen a similar issue stemming from the upgrade.
I'm trying to get the URL from something like:
/about/locations
Which used to work with a controller named about.php. To something more like:
/about/social_responsibility/commitment
Where about is now a aub-directory.
Funny thing is, currently it does sorta work. That second URL displays correctly. However my old pages, that first URL, now do not function... My new structure uses a base.php (default_controller) in the about directory. Thus if I write:
/about/base/locations
It does work. But I thought the whole routing thing (default controller) and using subdirectories is supposed to clean the URL up.
My info is as follows...
Current Routing (it's changed a bunch over the last few hours)

I just tested on my system, with CI 2.0.2 and it seems that the default controller setting works for subdirectories as well, without any other routes.
// so in your config file, whatever your default_controller is set to...

Important
This will only work when accessing /about -- anything in additional segments will be looking for additional controllers. So you'd have to think about how you'd like to access the base controller (whether or not you name it something else).
I'd assume that /about/locations is looking for an actual "locations" controller in your about folder, rather than being the method for your base controller. As far as CI knows, you're trying to execute one of two functions:
About controller's "locations" method
about/Locations controller's index method (obviously doesn't exist)
It follows that any 3-segment or greater URI will work with this scheme, but 2-segment URI's will confuse it. I don't think letting CI fallback to the default controller is going to work here. Try this:
$route['default_controller'] = "base";
$route['404_override'] = '';
$route['([^\/]*)'] = '$1/base';
$route['([^\/]*)/([^\/]*)'] = '$1/base/$2';

There is no built in authentication library within CodeIgniter, although there are many well developed third party ones. My preference is for Ion Auth - http://benedmunds.com/ion_auth/.
However if you are simply referring to preventing access to some "private" controller methods, you should add an underscore to the beginning of the method name - this will mean it is not accessible via a url, only via other controller methods:

I did it by creating a hook that checks if the user is logged in . If they are not it redirects them to the home login controller.

If you create a Auth_Controller that extends CI Controller then instead of extending CI Controller you can make all your apps extend your new Auth_Controller so they always redirect if the user is not logged in.
if (!$this->session->userdata('logged_in')) {

this will perfectly work..
just remember to load the session library as well.
