embedded Linux suspend/resume reference power manager - linux-kernel

I'm currently implementing suspend/resume for embedded Linux on some non-android network device.
The requirement is to implement a sleep manager task in kernel which would trigger system suspend in case that no task is currently running and there's no traffic pending.
I guess there should be some similar implementation existing already but failed to find.
Can anyone refer me to some kind of similar project on this subject?

If you don't mind doing some porting, the wakelocks from the Android kernel is exactly what you seem to need. User space acquires a wakelock when it needs to remain active (e.g. a task is running or traffic is taking place) and releases it when it doesn't anymore. When the number of held wakelocks reaches zero, the kernel enters suspend mode.

osx - What's the best way to "pause" a 3rd-party macOS app during launch in Swift?

I've been playing around with NSRunningApplication in Swift 3, and I've come up with a few questions.
What's the best way to "pause" an application while it's launching. Don't quit it, but don't let it launch completely either. Just keep the icon bouncing in the dock (i.e. "freeze" the launch) for some arbitrary time. After that time, if I decide I want to quit the app after all, I can do NSRunningApplication(withBundleIdentifier: "xyz").terminate() or .forceTerminate(), and I can confirm with .isTerminated(). Otherwise, I can just "unfreeze" the app and let it finish launching.
What's the least power-hungry way of checking constantly for an app launch? I could just schedule a Timer to check every half-second or so, but I believe that hogs a fair amount of memory. Can I set a listener or notification to check for a 3rd-party app launch? (i.e. to run a function every time the Notes app changes isTerminated state).

You can't reliably target another process and control it from Swift (or any other User-mode program), as you really need to do that in the kernel, with a kernel extension (Kext).
Apple's official framework for this is the Kernel Authorization framework (KAuth). Using the File Operation Scope (described in the documentation), a kernel extension will be notified of various operations, including a program's execution and can allow or deny its access.
A working example of its usage can be seen in the open source code of Google Santa, which they use to manage their own employees' computers. As its documentation states:
It consists of a kernel extension that monitors for executions, a userland daemon that makes execution decisions based on the contents of a SQLite database, a GUI agent that notifies the user in case of a block decision and a command-line utility for managing the system and synchronizing the database with a server.

Windows Driver - How do I determine if Windows is in the process of booting, or has already booted?

I'm trying to develop a dual purpose driver that performs certain tasks at boot time, and other unrelated tasks after Windows has already started. It's developed as a boot start driver. I understand that the proper way to do this may be to develop 2 separate drivers, but I'd prefer to only go through the WinQual process once. There's also the added benefit of performing only one driver install in my app versus two. It needs to work on Vista through Win8 x86 & 64.
So what I'm really looking for is a safe way to determine in DriverInit if the system is in the process of booting, or if it's already up and running. The driver will initially be utilized when Windows has already started, then enabled at boot time after the next reboot. The DriverInit code needs to be different for both scenarios.
Is there a registry key that is or is not present?
Can I determine if a user is logged-in in DriverInit?
Is there a call I can make that will determine if Windows is booting?
I'm not an expert at driver writing, so thanks in advance for any advice.
Technically, glagolig's answer is probably the correct way to solve this.
The solution for my particular issue was a little different. There are 2 mutually exclusive use cases were the driver is either needed as a SERVICE_DEMAND_START driver after Windows is up and running, or as a SERVICE_BOOT_START driver with boot time functionality. The situation never arises were I need the functionality of both cases at the same time in the same Windows session.
The driver is initially installed as a SERVICE_DEMAND_START driver (this is the one that is going to WinQual). It is then changed to SERVICE_BOOT_START in the registry on the new drive that will be booted. All the driver entry points (DriverEntry, AddDevice, etc) that are different for each use case read the 'Start' value in the driver's service registry key to determine how it needs to operate.
It hasn't passed yet, but I'm fairly certain that I can change the start type of the driver in the registry without affecting Window's digital signature enforcement.
At the time boot-start drivers are loaded Windows has not created any user-mode processes yet. Try to acquire a handle to some process that is supposed to be created later on during Windows startup. For example, smss.exe, csrss.exe or wininit.exe . (Processes with these names existed for many years, it is very unlikely that Microdoft abandons them in the future while still allowing existing kernel mode modules to run.) Use ZwOpenProcess with POBJECT_ATTRIBUTES pointing to one of those process' names. If the call fails you are at boot time.
Also you may study Windows startup described in "Windows Internals" by Russinovich and Solomon. Most likely you will get a number of other ideas.
I've answered a similar question elsewhere on SO. The short version is that what you're asking is not normal driver behavior, so no API exists to support this. You can add in heuristics to tell you this, but they'll remain heuristics.
You can use IoGetBootDiskInformation to check if you are loaded post or, during boot. It will return STATUS_TOO_LATE if this API is called post reboot.

How to hibernate application?

my question may seem too weird but i thought about the windows hibernation thing and i was wondering if there is a way to hibernate a specific process or application.
i.e : when windows start up from a normal shutdown/restart it will load all startup programs normally but in addition of that it will load a specific program with it`s previous status before shutting down the computer.
I have though about reserving the memory location and retrieve it back when computer start up , but is there any application that does that in windows environment ?
That cannot work. The state of a process is almost never contained in just the process itself. A gui app creates user32 and gdi objects that are stored in a heap associated with the desktop. It makes calls to Windows that affect the window manager state. It makes I/O calls that cause code inside drivers to run. Which in turn affects allocations inside the kernel pools. Multiply the trouble by every pipe or rpc channel it opens to talk to other processes. And shared resources like the clipboard.
Only making a snapshot of the entire operating system state works.
There are multiple solutions for this now, in Linux OS: CRIU, CryoPID2, BLCR.
I think docker can be used (both for windows & linux), but it requires pre-packaging your app in a docker, which bears some overhead(s).

Can a simple program be responsible for a BSOD?

I've got a customer who told me that my program (simple user-land program, not a driver) is crashing his system with a Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD). He says he has never encountered that with other program and that he can reproduce it easily with mine.
The BSOD is of type CRITICAL_OBJECT_TERMINATION (0x000000F4) with object type 0x3 (process): A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminate.
Can a simple program be responsible for a BSOD (even on Vista...) or should he check the hardware or OS installation?
Just because your program isn't a driver doesn't mean it won't use a driver.
In theory, your code shouldn't be able to BSOD the computer. It's up to the OS to make sure that doesn't happen. By definition, that means there's a problem somewhere either in hardware or in code other than your program. That doesn't preclude there being a bug in your code as well though.
The easiest way to cause a BSOD with a user-space program is (afaik) to kill the Windows subsystem process (csrss.exe). This doesn't need faulty hardware nor a bug in the kernel or a driver, it only needs administrator privileges1.
What is your code exactly doing? The error message ("A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminate.") sounds like one of the essential system processes terminated. Maybe you are killing a process and unintentionally got the wrong process?
If somehow possible you could try to get a memory dump from that customer. Using the Debugging Tools for Windows you can then further analyze that dump as described here.
1Windows doesn't prevent you from doing so because it "keeps administrators in control of their computer". So this is by design and not a bug. Read Raymond's articles and you will see why.
Short answer is yes. Long answer depends on what is you program is suppose to do and how it does it?
Normally, it shouldn't. If it does, there must be either
A bug in the Windows kernel (possible but very unlikely)
A bug in a device driver (not necessarily in a device your program uses, this could get quite complicated)
A fault in the hardware
I would bet on option number two (device driver) but it would be interesting if you could get us a more detailed dump.
Well, yes it can - but for many different reasons.
That's why we test on different machines, operating systems, hardware etc..
Have you set some requirements for your program and is your user following them?
If you can't duplicate it yourself, and your program doesn't need admin to run, I'd be a bit suspicous about
The stability of that system's hardware
The virus/malware status of that system.
If you can get physical access to the client box, it might be worth running a full virus scan with an up-to-date scanner, and running a full memtest on it.
I had a system once that seemed stable, except that a certian few programs wouldn't run on it (and would sometimes crash the box). Memtest showed my RAM had some bad bits, but they were in higer sims, so they only got accessed if a program tried to use a lot of RAM.
No, and that is pretty much by definition. The worst thing that you can say is that a user-land application may have "triggered" a Windows bug or a driver bug. But a modern desktop Operating System is fully responsible for its own integrity; a BSOD is a failure of that integrity. Therefore the OS is responsible, and only the OS.
(Example of a BSOD bug that your application alone could expose: a virus scanner implemented as a driver, that crashes when executing a file from sector 0xFFFFFFFF, a sector that on this one machine just happens to contain one DLL of your application)
I had problems when exit my app without stopping all the processes and BD connections when the program ends (I crashed the entire IDE). I place the "stopping and disconnecting" code in the "Terminate" of "Form_Closed" event of my main form and the problem wa solved, I don't know it this is your situation.
Another problem can be if the user is trying to access the same resources your app is using (databases, hardware, sockets, etc). Ask him/her about what apps he/she is using when the BSOD happens.

"Lock on the Kernel Object" on windows can make the entire system unresponsive?

There's this WIN32 process, which someone says:
The servide takes a lock on the kernel
object and does not release. After a

and has to restarted. Restanting only

According to my knowledge applications were not supposed to be able to crash the entire system in windows. Does anyone know if such an indecent behavior (taking a lock on the kernel object and not releasing it) can indeed crash the OS? If so why don't we see this more in malicious software?

This doesn't mean anything. There is no "kernel object" in NT, and any lock you could possibly take would be released if the service were restarted.
This depends on what type of application it is. Some applications install and use kernel drivers as part of their usage. A kernel driver has the most low level access possible in the system and is capable of crashing or hanging the system. If the process uses a kernel driver, and the description alludes to this, then yes it can crash / hang the system.
I believe Windows Vista started limiting the amount of damage a kernel driver can accidentally do (graphics drivers especially). But intentionally, you can still cause lots of problems.
Depending on which precise kernel object they mean, and which service, this may very well be true. See for instance Raymond Chen on Loader Lock, a kernel lock which applications can monopolize. Restarting the service will then become a problem because the very unload of that service will require the loader lock, too.
