Does Opera support NPN_PluginThreadAsyncCall on Mac? - macos

I'm trying my plugin with Opera 12.00 (MacOSX) and it seems like function NPN_PluginThreadAsyncCall() does not work.
Is there any trick I'm missing, or the function is not supported?
The plugin works properly in Windows and in other browsers on Mac (with some workaround for Safari)

NPN_PluginThreadAsyncCall has never worked for me with Opera; for that matter, it doesn't work on Safari 5.1 either.
FireBreath uses NSTimer to do a workaround.

Font rendering fine on Mac, messed up on Windows

I ran into a problem with font rendering on Windows.
I'm used to a little difference in rendering between Mac and Windows, but this just made my mouth fall open. I tested the site thoroughly on Mac and I'm positive it looks just fine in Chrome, Firefox and Safari.
It looks like this on Mac browsers:
On Windows, it looks completely messed up in any browser (I tested Chrome, Firefox and IE):
I know Mac has Iowan Old Style installed by default, so I tried forcing the Mac browsers to use the webfont I generated using FontSquirrel, but that doesn't reproduce the problem on Mac.
Both browsers seem to load the same font (namely the woff version) correctly. Does anybody have any idea what this could be?
I can't post the link to the website because I don't have enough reputation, please look at the screenshots for the URL..
Thanks guys!
After some more research I found out the original (ttf) font worked perfectly fine on Windows, so it had to be FontSquirrel that caused the problems. I tried out 8 different types of settings on FontSquirrel and kept having the same issues.
After a while I decided to try a different generator and I came across Fontie: https://fontie.flowyapps.com/home
This actually solved the problem for me!

mediaelement.js in Safari in Windows XP SP3

I'm testing mediaelement.js with various OS (Win XP and 7 so far) and browser combinations (Chrome, FF, IE8, Opera) before using it on my own website. Those combinations seem great but after hours of effort I can't get Safari to work well enough under Windows XP SP3 to do a true test of whether mediaelement.js works in Safari under Windows XP (Safari normally doesn't respond when visiting web pages with or without mediaelement).
Forum posters say that one shouldn't bother to try to make Safari and XP work together but my users worldwide use many combinations of OS and browser so I need to know whether to warn them off from trying to use my mediaelement-based pages with Safari and XP.
Can someone please confirm or deny that Safari on a Windows XP PC can play the video on http://mediaelementjs.com ? I would be most grateful.
I also tried this running an XP VM with all the latest updates. It worked with Safari 5.1.5 and I also upgraded it to 5.1.7 and both played the video without a hitch.
I found an old Win XP PC in the attic, installed Safari 5.1.7 and it handled the video on http://mediaelementjs.com fine.
I've been having this issue too. It's only on Safari on Windows. So far, I've had issues with Safari telling me that certain MediaElement functions don't exist:
TypeError: 'undefined' is not a function (evaluating 'this.pluginApi.loadMedia()')
It's obviously an issue with the Flash fallback and it occurs after calling .load(). It seems like a bug in MediaElementJS because that is an internal function.
I started setting the source like this:
var player = $('#wp_mep_1')[0].player.media;
player.src = 'video_url.mp4';
and then for Safari, or the Flash fallback, I had to manually change the flashvars after clicking to get the video to update:
$j('#me_flash_0').attr('flashvars','id=me_flash_0&isvideo=true&autoplay=false&
preload=none&width=480&startvolume=0.8&timerrate=250&flashstreamer=&height=270&
file='+video_urls[slider_position]+'.mp4');

Browser mode for Google Chrome to test compatibility of webapp

I'm developing a web app and want to make sure that it runs as intended on all major browsers. I've downloaded Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari and IE to test the app, but I want to make sure it works fine on previous versions of these browsers too.
I know I can download previous versions of Opera from here, and in IE I can select 'Browser Mode' from Developer Tools section.
Is there any way I can test my app on previous version of Chrome, FF and Safari?
I've never really had a problem with something not working in an older version of these browsers. The only compatibility checks I do are with older versions of IE. The reason is that a new version of IE changes a lot but the others come out with new versions so frequently and have automatic updating (you don't even notice it in Chrome) that not only is there (probably) not a significant change to the rendering engine from one version to the next, (pretty much) everyone using it is on the latest version anyway.
That being said, there are some websites that show you screenshots of how a page looks in various browsers.
Browser Shots comes to mind.

css target chrome on windows

Is there anyway to target chrome on windows? I'm looking to do this because of the difference in border-radius rendering. Chrome on osx seems to work fine, only problematic in Chrome on Windows. Thanks.
If you really, really have to do this, I recommend this CSS Browser Selector script:

Of course, you'll have to update your site when the browser issue gets fixed. :p

Firefox 3.6 plugins fail on Mac?

I just upgraded my mac to Firefox 3.6, and now neither of my TIFF Viewing plugins work.
in 3.5, If I had Quicktime on, then I'd get the tiff, viewed through quicktime. If I had Quicktime disabled, but my own plugin, AcellViewTIFF enabled, then I would get ViewTIFF viewing the TIFF. Since I'm the author of ViewTIFF, That's how I had it most of the time.
After I upgraded to 3.6, if ViewTIFF is enabled, I just get a blank space. if ViewTIFF is disabled, no matter whether or not Quicktime is enabled, it goes straight to preview.
Has anyone seen this?
(This is programming related because I'm writing AccelViewTIFF, and if the framework for plugins changed, I need to fix it...)
Edit to add:
This is an NPAPI plugin, I've removed or commented out the main, so I don't think that this is a CFM plugin problem.
I looked at Mozilla's "basicplugin" (located in mozilla-1-9-1-f15a2686e9a6/modules/plugin/sdk/samples/basic/mac under the standard mozilla source) and it works. I compared all of my functions to the functions in BasicPlugin, and the only function that it has that I don't is the drawPlugin function, which appears to do the actual work. All equivalent functions have the same interface.
When I remove or disable AccelViewTIFF, Firefox downloads the image and gives it to preview. When I enabled it it does nothing. This tells me that Firefox IS seeing that I have a plugin, but it's not running it for some reason.
There are no errors either in Firefox's error console or in any of the console logs I can see...
any ideas?
For the record, the problem was that this is an OLD plugin that still uses Quickdraw routines. evidently, they didn't make it into 64b, and so they don't work in FF 3.6.
Lets hear it for progress.
Are you using Leopard or Snow Leopard?
TIFF files open fine with the QuickTime 7.6.3.0 plugin with Firefox 3.6.
Go to Firefox -> Preferences -> Applications. Search for "tif" and then you can choose how Firefox handles files with the image/tiff MIME type. Set it to the plugin of your choosing. QuickTime should work (is for me on Snow Leopard).
