I'm in the edmx editor of visual studio, and I have a column that I want to map to a new property.
So I right click on my entity -> add -> new scalar property.
And the instead of adding the entity , the IDE goes to the Mapping details windows and select me the Column that isn't mapped.
Did you ever encounter this kind of bug ?
Save your model. Close Visual Studio. Start Visual Studio and open your edmx.
Now it should work (did it for me.)
Consider it a bug in Visual Studio.

I am having trouble finding the right-click context menu in Visual Studio 2015. I know that nothing is wrong with my project or the file I am working. I can find the right-click context refactor menu in Visual Studio 2013. However, in Visual Studio 2015 there isn't a refactor context menu in the right-click context menu.
Where did it go? How do I get it back?
Your suggestion cannot include menu Edit → Refactor.
I have tried to reset my Visual Studio settings back to default using menu Tools → Import and Export Settings and that didn't bring the menu back either.
Some of the refactoring tools have been relocated or are at least accessible in a different manner than they were previously.
Using the extract method refactor as an example, you can still use this function; it is just not done the same as before:
Right click
Quick actions
Click extract Method
I think they've changed it to feel more "ReSharper"ey. All of the functionality should still be there however.
Here's more information on refactoring in Visual Studio 2015 - hopefully this helps! Refactoring (C#)
You no longer need to access the refactoring using the mouse right click.
It is recommended that you use the keyboard shortcut keys within Visual Studio.
For all possible shortcut keys, see Default Keyboard Shortcuts in Visual Studio, Refactor.
You might need to build the project to get it to work.
See Code Editing ASP.NET Web Forms in Visual Studio 2013 | Microsoft Docs. (If it is missing then the point is that I am using an example provided by Microsoft.). In Refactoring and Renaming see To extract a method in a C# page. When I follow the instructions I cannot find the feature to extract the code to a method. When I tried the Edit menu it said I did not have valid code. Then I built the project and the feature to extract the code was available and worked.
If you change the name of the object you are refactoring, the light bulb then appears to the left which asks if you wish to change the name of the object (i.e. refactor) or generate a new constructor for the new named object.
Ctrl + . is the shortcut key for extracting a method in Visual Studio 2015 and onward.
Ctrl+M, R does not work anymore in new versions.
My toolbox is empty.
Obviously, I'm not the first. I read this question and this other question, but that didn't help.
I click here...
I get this window...
With instructions that say: "...Drag an item onto this text, to add it to the toolbox..."
Sounds good; from where do I get such items to drag?
The toolbox is empty because there is no project loaded.
The toolbox is populated with tools/controls according to the type of the current project. The controls are different for MFC than they are for ASP.NET, for example. If you haven't loaded any project, Visual Studio can't populate the toolbox.
Either open an existing project, or go to File -> New Project to create a new one.
Have you tried right-clicking on it and selecting the "Reset Toolbox" option? You can also try to manually add specific tools to it by using the "Choose Items..." option.
A common suggest is also to go into the Visual Studio 2010 Directory and delete all of the .tbd files within the following directory (Related) :
C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\VisualStudio\10.0"
Although if neither of these options work, you will really want to consider possibly reinstalling / repairing Visual Studio.
Is your project running? I noticed that my toolbox is empty when I am debugging the project. Try stopping debugging.
In Visual Studio 2010 I can generate class diagram from my project with 2 clicks. But now in Visual Studio 2013 I don't see the option "View Class Diagram" in project menu. Where did this item disappear? How can I generate class diagram from project now?
Right click on the project in solution explorer or class view window --> "View" --> "View Class Diagram"
For creating real UML class diagrams:
In Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate you can do this without any external tools.
In the menu, click on Architecture, New Diagram
Select UML Class Diagram
This will ask you to create a new Modeling Project if you don't have one already.
You will have a empty UMLClassDiagram.classdiagram.
Again, go to Architecture, Windows, Architecture Explorer.
A window will pop up with your namespaces, Choose Class View.
Then a list of sub-namespaces will appear, if any. Choose one, select the classes and drag them to the empty UMLClassDiagram1.classdiagram window.

For Visual Studio 2019 and Visual Studio 2017 Users
For People who are missing this old feature in VS2019 (or maybe VS2017) from the old versions of Visual Studio
This feature still available, but it is NOT available by default, you have to install it separately.
Open VS 2019 go to Tools -> Get Tools and Features
Select the Individual components tab and search for Class Designer
Select this Component and Install it, After finish installing this component (you may need to restart visual studio)
Right-click on the project and select Add -> Add New Item
Search for 'class' word and NOW you can see Class Diagram component

Update to create a class-diagram for the whole project
Here is how to generate a diagram for the whole project (after applying the previous steps)
Add class diagram to the project
if the option Preview Selected Items is enabled in the solution explorer, disabled it temporarily, you can re-enable it later
open the class diagram that you created in step 2 (by double-clicking on it)
drag-and-drop the project from the solution explorer to the class diagram
This takes relatively long time to save edmx.
Any help will be appreciated.
Btw, I do not know if this is behavior added to studio by some add-in!
There is a property, on ConceptualEntityModel's properties, called Transform Related Text Templates On Save.
(Right click on empty surface on designer and click on properties)
I just had to make it False!
I changed some parameters in a Visual Studio C++ project, and now I don't remember how to "go back". Is it possible to reset the build settings?
I don't mean the IDE settings (menu Tools -> Import and Export Settings).
Am I the only person that can read?!
The only way I know how to reset a "Parameter in a Project's Settings",,,
Is to open the Project file(csproj, vcxproj) with a text editor, and remove the block defining that parameter.
If you wanted to reset the Allow Isolation value, you would delete this text.
<AllowIsolation>true</AllowIsolation>
When project files are loaded by visual Studio, values which are not explicitly defined in the file, are assumed to be using the default. This will only work if the property has a default value(can't change some).
NOTE: This is NOT the same as Deleting the value from the Project Properties Dialog in VS. That method writes a blank value to your project file.
The command "devenv /resetsettings" will restore Visual Studio back to its original factory state.
You can find list of devenv switches here.
You may be able to get the previous/saved version of your Visual Studio project (*.vcproj) from your software version control system.
As many wrote here before, there is a need to reset your visual studio to default settings. Just follow this: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms247075(v=vs.90).aspx
Here is the awful method I used in Visual Studio 2022.
In "Property" pages, expand the individual configuration you want.
Click "All Options" and find the bold options you had changed.
To restore the defaults, click the options and select "<inherit from parent or project defaults>".
Click "Apply", then it will recover its original value.
Otherwise, you can compare the *.vcxproj with the project templates.
