I am searching using Elasticsearch and would like to understand how I can add sorting on several fields in Java as described here:
http://www.elasticsearch.org/guide/reference/api/search/sort.html
I have only succeeded in adding a single sort builder when preparing a search.
Thanks,
Stine
This is how I added sorting on a single field:
client.prepareSearch(indexName).setTypes(typeName)
.setQuery(query)
.addSort(fieldSort("activity").order(DESC).missing("_last"))
.setSize(limit)
.execute().actionGet();
The .missing("_last") cannot be applied to boolean fields.

I am new to Elastic Search. I would like to know if the following steps are how typically people use ES to build a search engine.
Use Elastic Search to get a list of qualified documents/results based on a user's input.
Build and use a search ranking model to sort this list.
Use this sorted list as the output of the search engine to the user.
I would probably add a few steps
Think about your information model.
What kinds of documents are you indexing?
What are the important fields and what field types are they?
What fields should be shown in the search result?
All this becomes part of your mapping
Index documents
Are the underlying data changing or can you index it just once?
How are you detecting new docuemtns/deletes/updates?
This will be included in your connetors, that can be set up in multiple ways, for example using the Documents API
A bit of trial and error to sort out your ranking model
Depending on your use case, the default ranking may be enough.
have a look at the Search API to try out different ranking.
Use the search result list to present the results to the end user
I have a status field in my elastic search index which can take values Open,Closed,Clear,Intermediate,Ready for Approval. Right now, I have created a visualization and sorted this field descending based on the Term. What I want to achieve is - I want this to be sorted in this particular order Open,Clear,Intermediate,Ready for Approval,Closed.
How do I achieve this? One option I am thinking is creating a scripted field and prefixing with integer column, but I am not sure if I will be able to filter the visualization later?
If this list of possible values is a static list of known values, there is another way to define your visualization with a little more manual configuration. Just replace your terms aggregation with a filters aggregation and add custom filters for the possible values like so:
Kibana will respect the order of your filters in the visualization. From a performance perspective, this should also be better than using a scripted field...
I am currently trying to sort a SOLR search based on a numeric value in a child document field.
I have recently learned that SOLR 6.6 has added support for this via a function query called childfield().
Can anyone please provide me an example of how to use this function properly? The documentation seems to be lacking and I keep getting an error that a sort order cannot be determined.
Preferably an explanation/example of the $bjq parameter usage would help also.
I'm integrating elasticsearch into an asset tracking application. When I setup the mapping initially, I envisioned the 'brand' field being a single-term field like 'Hitachi', or 'Ford'. Instead, I'm finding that the brand field in the actual data contains multiple terms like: "MB 7 A/B", "B-7" or even "Brush Bull BB72X".
I have an autocomplete component setup now that I configured to do autocomplete against an edgeNGram field, and perform the actual search against an nGram field. It's completely useless the way I set it up because users expect the search results to be restricted to what the autocomplete matches.
Any suggestions on the best way to setup my mapping to support autocomplete and subsequent searches against a multiple term field like this? I'm considering a terms query against a keyword field, or possibly a match query with 'and' as the operator? I also have to deal with hyphens like "B-7".
you can use phrase suggest, the guide is here:

I have googled a lot and also searched in stackoverflow.com about how to sort search results based on a Field Value in Lucene 3.0.2, but not found any useful data. I'm getting the search results from the index, based on the user query but not able to sort the results based on field like id or date.
I have pasted my code here for searching lucene index- http://pastie.org/1033974.
Please help me to solve this problem. If you provide me some example code or links where i can find that will be better.
Thanks
The IndexSearcher class has a couple of search methods that takes a Sort Object that you have to use. A Sort object is basically a wrapper around one or more SortField objects which hold details on what field to sort on and how.
Note that a field must be indexed to be used for sorting.
