Grails create-app error - macos

Anyone know why I would get this error when trying to create a grails app using terminal.
mycomputer:test-apps mailboxe$ grails create-app demo
| Configuring classpath
| Error Error executing script CreateApp: /Users/bla/.grails/ivy-cache/resolved-org.grails.internal-grails-2.0.3.xml (Permission denied) (Use --stacktrace to see the full trace)

As #Phillip Tenn mentions, this is a permissions issue. Chances are something got installed into a cache with the sudo command so the root user owns the file and your normal user can't modify it.
The easiest thing to do is probably to just whack your ~/.grails directory, by default, there isn't anything but cached information in there. So unless you've put something in there manually (like a config file), it's safe to delete and let it regenerate with the next grails command. To do that, just:
cd ~
sudo rm -r .grails
It'll prompt you for your password to ensure you want to run this command as the root user.
Alternatively, you could try to find the offending file and chown it to your user and group (by default on OSX the group is staff). So for this example:
sudo chown bla:staff /Users/bla/.grails/ivy-cache/resolved-org.grails.internal-grails-2.0.3.xml

Grails needs to be able to write to a .grails folder under your user directory.
Without knowing the details of your development environment, the error message you are getting says (Permission denied) when you try to run grails create-app demo.
I would look into your directories:
/Users/bla/.grails/
/Users/bla/.grails/ivy-cache/
and ensure that you have proper write permissions.

No /var/log/jenkins directory after LTS installation

After installing Jenkins with https://www.jenkins.io/download/lts/macos/ and running it, when I go to http://localhost:8080/
Unlock Jenkins
To ensure Jenkins is securely set up by the administrator, a password has been written to the log (not sure where to find it?) and this file on the server:
So there it says:
Log files should be at /var/log/jenkins/jenkins.log, unless customized in org.jenkins-ci.plist.
But there is no /var/log/jenkins directory on my machine - where to find those logs? Why there is no /var/log/jenkins directory?
Typically this will be written into the JENKINS home directory. Which is located at /Users/<YOUR_USER>/.jenkins. The secret will be located here.
`/Users/<YOUR_USER>/.jenkins/secrets/initialAdminPassword`
and this file on the server:
It is best to rely on "this file" rather than the logs
The official documentation suggests:
sudo cat /var/lib/jenkins/secrets/initialAdminPassword
Or (as in here)
cat /Users/administrator/.jenkins/secrets/initialAdminPassword
In both instances, the file mentioned in the "Unlock Jenkins" should give you the password.
(assuming this is a Homebrew installation, not a Docker one)

Unable to modify permissions of folders on Mac (Mojave)

I am new to Macs and I am trying to run some interesting stats on my iMessages using the code runner extension on VSCode. I've been following this post: https://towardsdatascience.com/heres-how-you-can-access-your-entire-imessage-history-on-your-mac-f8878276c6e9
However, when I run the line conn = sqlite3.connect('/Users/<username>/Library/Messages/chat.db')
I get the error sqlite3.OperationalError: unable to open database file
Based off what I can tell my issue is that VScode doesn't have the right permissions to access the ~/Library/Messages folder and possibly the chat.db as well. First, I ran ls -l on Library and the result is drwx---rwx for Messages. So I tried to use both chmod a+rwx Messages and sudo chmod a+rwx Messages to open permissions to everything but got the error chmod: Unable to change file mode on Messages: Operation not permitted both times.
Am I doing something wrong and/or is there a better way to do this? Or is it just not possible to change the permissions of this folder?
After some more creative searching I discovered that it was an Issue with Mojave's System Integrity Protection (SIP) and can be solved by giving the desired apps full disk access in Settings>Security&Privacy>Privacy>FullDiskAccess.

Apache Drill: Local udf directory must be writable for application user error

I'm trying to get Drill up and running on my machine. However, whenever I enter drill-embedded mode (bin/drill-embedded on Bash), I get this error:
Error: Failure in starting embedded Drillbit: java.lang.IllegalStateException: Local udf directory [/tmp/drill/udf/udf/local] must be writable for application user (state=,code=0)
If I try to run a query at this point, it'll give back:
No current connection
Any idea how to fix this? I've tried starting with a clean shell with no luck. Is it a permissions issue?
You have to give the directory /tmp/drill/udf/udf/local write access. Since it is a directory in /tmp, you might need root access to give permissions, or you will have to use sudo. To give permission, use this:
chmod 777 -R /tmp/drill/udf/udf/local
Also make sure the user is having at least read permission on the parent directories, otherwise you will get a permission denied error again.

Failed to initialize central HHBC repository: Failed to initialize schema

The complete error is:
Failed to initialize central HHBC repository:
Failed to initialize schema in /home/shreeram/.hhvm.hhbc:
I am trying to configure hhvm ana apache2.
For that i am following this link how-to-setup-hhvm-on-ubuntu-14-04-server-with-apache-2-4-part-1/
In above link i am stuck in the step when i put this command in the terminal:
curl -sS https://getcomposer.org/installer | php
The result of that command is the error mentioned above.
The shreeram directory has both read and write permission.
Could anyone help me to understand what i am missing there?
Are you sure permissions are correct on /home/shreeram, and that /home/shreeram/.hhvm.hhbc is readable and writable by the user running php? This issue really does sound like a permissions problem.
As the same user that was running php, does touch /home/shreeram/.hhvm.hhbc work? What about echo > /home/shreeram/.hhvm.hhbc?
If that's all fine, try rm /home/shreeram/.hhvm.hhbc and then try to install Composer again. Although it's typically a permission error, there are cases when the repo can become corrupt (particularly if the enclosing directory is on NFS or some other network filesystem) and you can just remove it and start over.

IntelliJ needs to copy tomcat/conf directory to project directory

I have a freshly installed Tomcat 7 server, and I'm trying to make IntelliJ deploy a HelloWorld Spring MVC app to Tomcat.
My Tomcat home is /usr/share/tomcat7 and Tomcat base is /var/lib/tomcat7
However, when I try to run the project, IntelliJ throws an error saying:
Error running Tomcat : Error copying configuration files from /var/lib/tomcat7/conf to /home/adonis/.IntelliJIdea12/system/tomcat/Tomcat__SpringMVCApp/conf : /var/lib/tomcat7/conf/tomcat-users.xml (Permission denied)
Here is a screenshot - http://i.imgur.com/CQ3z0e1.png
Any permissions I need to set up?
Try chmod -R 777 /var/lib/tomcat7/conf/, it works to me.
Make sure that files under /var/lib/tomcat7/conf/ directory have read permission for the user IntelliJ IDEA is running from.
chmod -R 644 /var/lib/tomcat7/conf/
should help.
Also check that /home/adonis/.IntelliJIdea12/system/tomcat/ has correct permissions and owner. Could be that it was created from a different user and your current user doesn't have the rights to write into it.
If it doesn't help, download and unpack a new Tomcat installation from .tar.gz file, configure IDEA to use this installation instead.
Note that Tomcat installed using the package manager on some Linux systems has non-standard layout and permissions, and therefore will not work with IDEA.
I had the same problem and these steps helped me to Start my tomcat7 from Intellij :
I have Linux Mint 17,and Tomcat 7 which is installed using apt-get
CATALINA_HOME in /usr/share/tomcat7 and CATALINA_BASE in /var/lib/tomcat7
1- First I created a soft link which references /etc/tomcat7
cd /usr/share/tomcat7
ln -s /etc/tomcat7 conf
2- Then you have to change the access permissions of /etc/tomcat7
sudo chmod -R 655 /etc/tomcat7/
That's it.
For me, this worked for Tomcat 8 on Manjaro Linux:
sudo chmod -R 755 /usr/share/tomcat8/
I added my own user account to the tomcat7 group.
And chmod g+r /var/lib/tomcat7/conf/tomcat-users.xml
Had the same error with usr/share, dont just blindly run a command to act as magic-wand as many just tell you you run this and that on a mother-directory.
this is Linux, always some stupid thing with the permissions.
all you garra do is using chmod 666 or chmod 777 on files that are causing the error, but you need to look at those files first using ll and ls to make sure you are not decreasing some access, you may have a directory with 77x and when you do 666 you mess things up.
just gradually and one by one increase the chmod level and check whether problem goes away or not.
Sorry I didn't give you some code to fix all the problems.
This also happens to me, and I managed to solve it for Tomcat version 9, this problem is related to the configuration of Tomcat and you just need to give it permissions to be deployed.
