How to fetch DB results from TOAD for DB2 using Ruby/capybara
Are you asking about TOAD, the DB client app? If so, Capybara is not the tool you should use as it only works for web apps (browser or headless browser tests). If you want to check the contents of a DB2 database using ruby then you could connect to it with ActiveRecord and run queries using that. On the other hand if you want to automate TOAD's user interface using ruby/capybara then you're out of luck - that's not possible.

I've created a database via MS Access & I've created some tables within it. I want to know if it's possible to access it via Toad & how can I achieve it.
I managed to create the DB, but I'm seeing that Toad has three options for connection: TNS Names, LDAP or Direct (I don't really know the difference between the three). What would I need to do to connect it successfully?
I'm expecting to be able to login to my Database using Toad & do queries on it.
How do i start database testing with selenium and SQL SERVER, kinldy let me know which all jar's do i have to download and start .
Thanks,
PK
Selenium RC is meant to test html pages, using javascript, which is wrapped into client drivers for several languages. If you need anything from database it doesn't relate to selenium, just include your DB client libs and access it independently to Selenium.
Selenium is used mostly for web application testing.
You can use java features for database testing.
See the example given in the link below. You can use sql queries in java program to fetch results from database and validate them in the java program itself.

I am trying to submit XQuery queries to an Oracle 11g database through their XQJ API.
When I instantiate an oracle.xquery.xqj.OXQDataSource as explained in http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/oem/xquery-jdbc-325944.html, I can submit queries fine except that I haven't found how I can set up the server connection (server name, port, username, password, ...) info:
This datasource claims that it doesn't support setting any property.
It doesn't implement the data source constructor which takes a JDBC connection.
I don't see any non standard method to set such info.
When I try to access some random collection like collection("oradb:/foo") I just get an empty result set even when no server is running, suggesting that the driver doesn't even try to connect.
What have I missed and how can I set the server connection info?
Thanks,
Eric
Thanks to Charles Foster I can answer to my own question: the XQJ implementation from Oracle is an old standalone version from January 2010 that is pretty useless and doesn't interact with Oracle databases.
Despite all the Oracle statements about XQJ, I haven't been able to find any client/server XQJ implementation (except one from DataDirect of course) and the way to submit XQuery queries to Oracle databases appears to be through JDBC, embedded in PL-SQL statements.
It is possible in 12.

Does the SQL syntax differ in any way for SQL Plus and apex.oracle.com
From this article I can assume that it doesn't, but I want to be sure. Is SQL Plus only an environment that is able to connect to an Oracle server ?
I'm asking this because I just started learning Oracle's SQL syntax and I don't have access to my faculty's server from home. The only solution I found so far is Apex since I'm not planning to install a server on my laptop.

Yes, SQL*Plus is not very useful unless you can connect to an Oracle database server.

If you cannot connect to your faculty's database server from home, you have no choice but to install your own server somewhere. Apex only runs on an Oracle database server.
However, it's not too difficult nowadays, as long as you follow the installation instructions carefully.
Another option is to get a free account at apex.oracle.com. You'll be able to use Apex's SQL interface. I don't think you can connect to it using SQL Developer, though.
Alternatively, you can start up a simple pre-prepared Apex instance on Amazon's EC2. With this option, if you open the relevant port (1521) you'll be able to connect to it using SQL Developer.
The SQL commands are identical. They are all passed directly to the database engine for execution.
SQL*Plus has a bunch of extra commands (mostly for formatting output, but also stuff like dealing with variables and database startup/shutdown).
[Very old versions of SQL*Plus from the Oracle 7 era don't recognize the MERGE command as SQL and would refuse to do anything with it. But I'd hope those versions are all dead and buried by now.]
SQLPlus commands are to manage the SQLPLus environment and have really nothing to do with SQL. They are mostly for formatting output or taking in data that is used with SQL to send to the server.
SQLPlus is a proprietary Oracle product for connecting to Oracle server and issuiung commands. It is being replaced (officially) by SQL Developer.
I strongly suggest you download the free SQL Developer program from oracle:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/sql-developer/downloads/index.html
it's a great tool for working with sql, pretty easy to get started (install, create a new db connection and start typing sql_ plus does fill in for columns once it know the tablenames.
Also, it can run most sqlplus commands if you want to format output, etc.
A nice visual intro to the oracle schema and useful if you want to write plsql.
I have tried SQLite in Java, but the speed is slow due to the JDBC driver. Then I tried HSQLDB and thought the speed is good, but I cannot find a good management tool for HSQLDB such as phpMyAdmin for MySQL or SQLite Manager for SQLite.
I'd like to use the manager tool to prepare the test data for unit tests, or use the manager tool to navigate the data after doing some small experiments.
Is there any good tool?
Here are a couple other suggestions you might checkout:
Squirrel SQL http://squirrel-sql.sourceforge.net/
Execute Query http://executequery.org/
Razor SQL (paid) http://www.razorsql.com/
Razor has the best feature set, but is paid. The others are good at different things and worth checking into.
This would only have meaning if you are running in HSQLDB server mode. If you are running in memory or file mode, then you either can't access the DB from another process or doing so would lock it.
In Server mode you could use any universal client. JDBC driver is the hsqldb.jar itself.
Actually HSQL brings its own management tool (which is not super). See http://hsqldb.org/doc/guide/apf.html
I've used Squirrel SQL. It's a universal client for any JDBC database.
