I'm new to maven world. My organization has maven release process all the artifacts are kept in our maven remote repo, so I want to deliver some specific artifact version to some of our customer. How can I download specific module version?
In case you don't have a web interface like Nexus for your internal repo, you can create a standalone pom.xml, enter the desired version into the dependencies and call mvn package.

EDIT : I forgot you might expect the artifact to turn up in the same folder as the pom is in. The default maven setting is to download it to a subfolder of /yourHomeFolder/.m2/repository/The name of the subfolder is the group Id of the artifact.
EDIT2: here is a sample setup for downloading the jars into the folder of your choice. If you delete the <outpuDirectory> setting, the artifact jar will be downloaded into the subfolder /dependendies. The execution is bound to the validate phase, so just call mvn validate

I have a project which deploys to Maven Central via OSSRH using the Maven release and nexus-staging-maven plugins using the directions from http://central.sonatype.org/pages/ossrh-guide.html and http://central.sonatype.org/pages/apache-maven.html .
This works fine, but it often takes several hours for the artifact to be visible on Maven Central. Often we would like to make use of the deployed artifact immediately, so we end up deploying it from our local repositories to our internal Nexus server using deploy:deploy-file . This works but it is inelegant and easy to forget to do. Is there any way to make Maven deploy to an internal Nexus as well as Maven Central as part of the release process?

Add an additional execution to the maven-deploy-plugin:

The yourNexusRepo value will look something like this:
releases::default::https://nexus.host.org/nexus/content/repositories/releases
You should be able to get the exact URL from Nexus. The part before the first :: is the repository ID.
We solved this problem by no longer using nexus-staging-maven-plugin as an extension. This is described at https://help.sonatype.com/repomanager2/staging-releases/configuring-your-project-for-deployment :
If more control is desired over when the plugins deploy goal is
activated or if Maven 2 is used, you have to explicitly deactivate the
Maven Deploy plugin and replace the Maven Deploy plugin invocation
with the Nexus Staging Maven plugin...
In our case, we disabled the default-deploy execution by setting <phase>none</phase>. Our full solution is available at https://github.com/newmediaworks/nmw-oss-parent/commit/a7377a158feded473cb2f1618449e34173c22252 which includes an additional execution of maven-deploy-plugin in the jenkins-deploy profile.
The key takeaway follows, which so far seems to behave as if extension were enabled, but does not interfere with additional maven-deploy-plugin executions:

Is there a way to exclude files only when calling mvn deploy but have the files included when I call mvn install?

When I run the jar locally I want the logback.xml in src/main/resources but when I deploy it so it's a library the logback.xml should not be included.
It is not the "Maven Way" to have an artifact with different content depending on where it's stored. Maven expects artifact-1.0.jar to be exactly the same in the remote repository and any local repositories.
You could have the project create a classified jar alongside the real jar. The classified jar would include the logback.xml.

This will create two artifacts, artifact-1.0.jar and artifact-1.0-logging.jar. Both artifacts will end up in both repositories. If you don't want the logging version to be attached (Maven terminology for published to repos), investigate using the maven-assembly-plugin which can create packages in various formats without attaching them.
You could also move the logback.xml into a separate project, package it separately, and add it to the classpath only when you run the jar from the local script.
I have an EAR file from some build. I want to extract the contents of this EAR file into another folder. I am confused how to do this. I have looked and tried

You can do it using dependency:unpack-dependencies. I just modify my answer because according to your comments, your ear is generated by some other build. If you do not have an Enterprise repository that you can deploy your ear artifact, you have to use "system" scope, but please note that it is usually discouraged.

The Maven Dependency Plugin and its unpack goal can do this.

This takes the 'myear.ear' artifact and extracts it to the 'target/earoutput' directory. This also works with JARs, WARs and any other zip-like file. The phase this executes under is 'package' - this may be too late if you need to use these resources in other parts of the build. Change the phase to something earlier such as 'generate-resources' if needed.
You mentioned that you already tried using the dependency plugin. Is the EAR file from another Maven project, and has it been installed in the local Maven repository? If it still doesn't work post the plugin configuration you tried to use.

For this to work, your EAR file needs to be put into your local Maven repository (this is just a directory on your disk). But if other people need to build your project as well, you have a few options:
import the EAR into your local repository, and also deploy to a remote repository so everyone can get it (recommended, but requires you to set up a corporate Maven repository)
give the EAR to everyone and have them put it into their local repository using a couple of Maven commands (might be OK for a few developers, less overhead than setting up a whole repository server)
check the dependent EAR into source control under your project and unpack it (not the recommended way of doing things) in a goal in your project
Importing into your local repository is easy. It's very similar to these instructions.
Use the following command:
mvn install:install-file -Dfile=<path-to-EAR-file-on-local-filesystem> -DgroupId=myear
-DartifactId=myear -Dversion=1.0 -Dpackaging=ear
(modify path, groupId, artifactId and version as needed)
Group ID and artifact ID are there simply to uniquely identify artifacts.
Once you install this in the local repository, the dependency plugin should work and find the artifact.
I have a maven multi module project why is it when I put this configuration:

in the root pom and mvn install the project no rebel.xml file is generated.
I can generate it using mvn org.zeroturnaround:jrebel-maven-plugin:1.1.3:generate but that only creates the rebel.xml under target/classes and does not include it in the jar\war package.
But when I put the above configuration in the individual maven module it does generate it during install and includes it in the package as per process-resources
But I don't want to duplicate the plugin in all modules, but only put it in the root pom and during install is should generate the rebel.xml file and include in the package.
Am I missing how maven works?
Turns out it was my bad I had put the plugin by error in the pluginManagement section when I thought I had put it in the build>plugins section where it should be, now it's working fine. Many Thanks
I am trying to come out with a plugin to detect and process Java EE application clients.
I created a new packaging type called 'car' through META-INF/plexus/components.xml (http://maven-car-plugin.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/maven-car-plugin/src/main/resources/META-INF/plexus/components.xml) and a corresponding mojo for Java EE app clients. I have pretty much followed the same steps as the maven-ejb-plugin.
The behaviour i want is the same as the maven-ejb-plugin: Defines an ejb packaging type but the artifact gets installed in the repo as a .jar and gets bundled in the ear as .jar too.
I believe must be configurable some how because ejb packaging type gets installed as .jar but war packaging type produces a .war.
The problem in my case is that a .car file gets installed in the repo and a .car file gets bundled in the ear.
Does anyone know how to make sure it gets installed in the repo as a .jar file?
I ran into the same issue you have, except, I'm building a .war file and wanted a .jar file installed into my local repo. What I did was use the maven-jar-plugin to create a jar file in addition to a war file, it's generated in my /target directory. I also used the maven-install-plugin to install the outputted jar to my local repo.

Perhaps you could try using the packaging parameter in maven install plugin to see if that helps in your case?
I would assume you would have to specify
<packaging>jar</packaging>
as well in the component descriptor. Otherwise it looks correct to me..
