Some time ago on XP I was considering switching to Dvorak and I found this little program on line, "click here" and from than on the left Ctrl + Shift switches me to Dvorak. Well now it is just a hindrance and it followed me from XP to Windows 7. I've been the 'normal' route going through the control panel but it shows there it has never been changed. I'm not a programmer, I probably know just enough to get in trouble. I suspect something in the registry got changed, but that is just a guess. Can you at least tell me where to look. I could probably delete a line or change some small thing in registry if I knew where to look but that is about the limit of what I know. Thanks

Since the last windows 10 update you can disable that functionality by opening windows settings and following these simple steps:

I think this question is better suited to SuperUser, but I'll try to answer it for you.
There are literally thousands of registry entries related to language input and keyboard layout, so tackling that would be troublesome. Your best bet would be to try disabling this properly through the GUI.
For Windows 10 (source):
Click "Clock, Language, and Region" from the control panel
Click "Language"
Click "Advanced settings" in the right column
If you'd like to remove Dvorak as an option entirely, click "options" here and remove it under "Input method"
Under "Switching input methods", click "Change language bar hot keys"
Select "Between input languages" and click "Change Key Sequence"
Disable/change the keyboard shortcut as you'd like
For older versions of Windows, the process is similar:
Open the "Region and Language" panel from the control panel.
Click the "Keyboards and Languages" tab.
Click the "Change keyboards..." button.
Click the "Advanced Key Settings" tab.
For each item listed under "Action", click the "Change Key Sequence..." button and either clear the "Enable Key Sequence" checkbox, or select the "Not Assigned" radio buttons.
If you no longer want to have Dvorak has an option, back in the "Change keyboards..." panel, go to the "General" tab, select "United States-Dvorak" and click the "Remove" button.
Don't forget to apply the changes!

For Windows 10 Pro, version 1809, the settings seems to be at yet another place as mentioned above:
Open Settings App
Click Devices
Click Typing in the left column
Click Advanced keyboard settings at the bottom
Click Language bar options
Choose Advanced Key Settings tab in the popup
Select Between input languages and click Change Key Sequence...
Set both Switch Input Language and Switch Keyboard Layout to Not Assigned
Click OK

In Windows 10:
Type in the search bar of the start menu Control Panel -> Click Language -> Click Advanced settings -> Click Change language bar hot keys -> Click Change Key Sequence

Edit: Windows 10 has moved things around since this post. It may be easiest to search Settings for "Advanced Keyboard Settings."
Start > Settings > Region And Language
Advanced Keyboard Settings on the right hand side
Language Bar Options
Advanced key settings
Between Input languages
Change Key Sequence... Not Assigned
Ok (then Apply For Windows 10 )

How to edit greyed key bindings set in Xcode 11

I want to change the key binding set in Xcode 11 some are editable bur some are greyed which I cannot edit, how to unlock it.
Because they are similar to other editable shortcuts thus are treated as something like dependent variables.
In the File Menu section for example, the Close Tab (CMD+W) shortcut is editable. Meanwhile, the similar shortcuts (Close Other Tabs (Option+CMD+W), Close Window (Shift+CMD+W), Close Other Windows (Control+Option+CMD+W), Close All Windows (Option+Shift+CMD+W)) are not editable (greyed).
But when I change Close Tab from (CMD+W) to (CMD+M), the W in the keys of all those similar shortcuts will be changed accordingly to M.
You can verify this on your computer.
To be clear, you cannot edit key bindings that are grayed out. They are generated based on the preceding setting. For example, if the preceding settings is ⌘2 then the grayed out setting below may add ⌥ to become ⌘⌥2.
If you're astonished at how poor this design is, then rest assured that your understanding is correct.
As a workaround, I use BetterTouchTool to remap my shortcuts. For example to "close other tabs" I remap ⌘⇧W (my preferred shortcut) to ⌥⌘W (Xcode's default) and have it only apply to the Xcode app.

I want to switch between two different windows opened in the same desktop on Mac (El Capitan). I can't do it with cmd+tab. Does anyone knows how to do it?
None of the following shortcuts work as well:
cmd+`, cmd+shift+`, cmd+number
The shortcut is defined in System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts
⌘` is the default, Check the shortcut and if it's enabled at all
Using CMD + Shift + Backtick allows you to cycle through windows.
To select a specific tab in a window you can use CMD + a number.
You may have this disabled in your settings. System Preference > Keyboard > Shortcuts
Using cmd+number you will switch the windows, starting in number 1 to the number of open windows
This is a common issue in all [currently released] versions of 10.12 [Sierra]. Although there isn't a solid fix for it the quickest workaround is to go to the Apple menu > System Preferences > Keyboard > Text and in the lower left corner first click the '+' button then click the '-' button, close System Preferences and you should be good to go. You may need to do this after restarting each time but it only takes a second.
Had this problem too (MaxOS Mojave)
I knew about this fix:
System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Keyboard > Move focus to next window
- but could not make it work
The thing is. First just click on the right side of the "Move focus to the next window" you then see the area becomes editable with a line around the symbol to the right. Then you click the combination you want and voila! I noticed when done and then clicked "restore defaults" it went back to not working again. Followed the steps again and all good.

The solution by Johnny H works in my Mojave 10.14.2. You obviously cannot assign a key combination already in use in other shortcuts.

For me the following works (on my relatively new Macbook Pro 2020):
CMD + > or CMD + <
A listing in System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Keyboard as shown in comment https://stackoverflow.com/a/44624720/845117, currently best rated in this thread, is not existing on my system.
I do have another older Macbook Air where it is a different shortcut, but I cannot remember if I ever manually changed it; but it was never anything with ` for me.

Change language being spell-checked in Textmate

In OS X applications such as Mail and Firefox you can right click in a text field and change the language being spell-checked. I can't figure out how to do the same in Textmate. Can it be done easily, and if, how?
Press ⌘: (it's a shortcut to Edit, Spelling, Show Spelling and Grammar) and change the language in the dropdown.
To update the error highlights on the active file, press ⌥⌘; twice to turn Check Spelling as You Type off and on again.
Edit / Spelling /check spelling as you type (click on it to uncheck).
Since there is no option in the TextMate preferences, there is no easy option. The only way to accomplish this is to change your preferred system language, i.e. going to "System Preferences" > "Language & Text" > "Language" and dragging the language you want to spell-check to the top. You have to log out and log in again to make this change work.
Hopefully there will be an easier solution in TextMate2.
Very old thread but in TextMate 2:
Edit -> Spelling -> various options to spell check are shown at the top of that menu. Below, choose System (Automatic by Language) ideally and it'll follow System Preferences, else choose from one of the other languages listed.
If using the "automatic" setting, you should not need to log in/out or restart Textmate 2 (at least, in OS X Sierra) to detect a change made in System Preferences, though you might need to toggle on and off the "system automatic" TextMate language selection if it doesn't seem to "see" the change straight away.
The ⌘: shortcut mentioned by #dipnlik works in TextMate 2, showing a popup menu hovering under the first "underlined in red" word and is useful for its "learn spelling" and "ignore spelling" options.

2 basic Textmate shortcuts 'don't save' and 'replace all'

Ok, maybe they're system shortcuts. I've googled (just a bit) and couldn't find an answer. Maybe there isn't any :) Still..
I love keyboard and I use quite a few in TextMate but just realise I still use the mouse for 2 of the most common actions:
How do I press search and replace after the S/R dialog box is up? - if you press enter it just takes you to the next occurrence of the search string
when I close a file that I don't want to save, how can I choose don't save without touching the mouse?
To select Don't Save from the keyboard, you can use the keyboard shortcut ⌘+D. (This works in most OS X apps, not just TextMate.)
The search and replace (actually it's called "Replace & Find") shortcut is alt-cmd-f and works both inside the Find dialog and without it. With using other shortcuts like cmd-f, shift-cmd-f, cmd-G you can perform most of the search/replace actions without even opening the dialog. For example, if you want to perform the substitution, you press alt-cmd-f, then another is highlighted and if you want to skip it, it's cmd-G, which finds yet another, and so on.
As for the second question, I think it's a general Mac OS X issue -- the message boxes buttons don't have keyboard shortcuts in other apps, too. When I first switched from Windows, this annoyed me but I got used to it by now.
I recently built a web site to store lists of shortcut keys and there is a great list of TextMate Shortcut Keys for Mac on there.
If you know any more you can add them yourself too!
Here's the link http://shortcutkeys.org/software-shortcuts/mac/textmate
If you want to choose the answer for any dialog with the keyboard, go to "System Preferences" > "Keyboard" > "Keyboard Shortcuts". On the bottom of that page there are two radio buttons. Activate "All controls". Now you can switch options of a dialog box with the tab key in every proper OS X application. Note that this is a secondary option, thus you can hit the enter key for the default behaviour or space to trigger your secondary option. Most often it's set to the opposite of the default behaviour, i.e. "Don't save" in a file save dialog and "no" or "cancel" in many many other applications.
I think thats a great feature. Due to the secondary option I always hit either enter or space, depending which option I wanted.

Open Dialog preserving settings

How does one preserve the settings in the Open Dialog box? For example, I would the Open Dialog to remember that I chose the Details view and sorted by date modified.
Microsoft didn't see fit to give us any documented way of doing this, but some people have figured out bits of the puzzle. This link shows how to set the view, but not how to get the current setting:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc164009.aspx
I'm not quite sure about this about isn't it an OS setting. If the user choose their Folder Preferences such as then Windows will remember or not. In this case from accessibility and usability point of view this is User's preferences.
You could inherit from the dialog's class and then see what can be overriden to do the persistence of its state.
Simple non-technical solution.
This worked for me (WinXP SP3) in some cases but not all. Since you don't have the option of changing things in a common Open dialog, you can try to do it in Windows Explorer.
Open Windows Eplorer. If you want to change the sort order, go to the details view and click on the column to sort, normally Name, but you may want to sort by Date. Now change
the view back to whatever you want. Now select "Tools" then "Folder Options". On the General tab, for "Tasks" select "Use Windows classic folders," for "Browse folders" select "Open each folder in same window." Now click the "View" tab. Scroll down and check the box for "Remember each folders view settings." If it's already checked, uncheck it then check it again. Click the "Apply" Button at the botton of the window. Click the "Apply to All Folders" button near the top. These settings may show up in your Open dialog. Having done this you can now change the settings in Windows Explorer or any other Folder window that allows you to change them and that Folder window should remember them. This fixed the Open dialog in my qraphics editor but not in my video editor.
