Xcode 3 and iOS 6 - xcode

A newbie question. I have Xcode 3.2.6 and my ipad is iOS 6.0. It seems this version of Xcode doesn't support the iOS version. What version do I need to upgrade my Xcode to so that I can test apps on devices running iOS 6.
And, my second question do I have to download the .dmg to upgrade Xcode. Currently I am running snow leopard 10.6.8.

For iOS 6 you will need Xcode 4.5 and at least Lion (10.7)

You need OS X Lion 10.7.4 or later to install the latest version of Xcode from the AppStore. Then you will be able to build apps to your device with iOS 6.0.

Do I need to install Yosemite in order to build a Swift iOS app?

I would like to try building a swift app, but I am afraid to upgrade my Mac to Yosemite Developer Preview. I am not clear if this is a prerequisite.
Just to get the official source in here, the Xcode 6 Beta 1 Release Notes state:
Xcode 6 Beta requires a Mac running OS X version 10.9.3 (or later) or 10.10.
And Xcode 6 comes bundled with Swift.
It's not a prerequisite. You can install the XCode 6 beta which includes swift support as long as you have the newest version of Mavericks (10.9.3)
No. I am using Mavericks (10.9.3), and Xcode6 beta is working well, and built program is also working well.

How to run Xcode 4.3 or Xcode 3 in OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion)

Because iOS7 needs Xcode 5, and Xcode 5 must run under OS X 10.8, if I update the OS from 10.7 to 10.8, this makes the old Xcode 4.3.3 not work.
Because an old project needs support ARMv6 arch, I still need Xcode 4.3.3 to maintain the app.
How can I have both Xcode 4 and Xcode 5?
Can Xcode 4.6/Xcode 5 can support ARMv6 arch?
Looks like Xcode 4.3 is not supported on 10.8. However, 4.4.1 (includes iOS 5.1 SDK) and 4.6.3 (includes iOS 6.1 sdk) are. Go Apple's developer download site and search for which ever newer version of Xcode 4 that works for you.
According to Wikipedia Xcode 4.4.1 was the last to support armv6.

What was the last version of Xcode shipped with iPhone Simulator 3.0?

I installed iPhone Simulator 3.0 on Xcode 3.2.6 on Snow Leopard using a misterious package iPhoneSimulatorSDK3_0.pkg I found on a chinese web page, but the simulator keeps saying "iOS Simulator could not find the SDK. The SDK may need to be reistalled"
So, I need the to install the full version of the mentioned Xcode
Any help is apreciated
iPhone SDK 3.2 Final with Xcode 3.2.2 for Snow Leopard (10.6.0) has iOS Simulator 3.0 built-in

xcode 4.2 with ios5.1

I have Xcode version 4.2 with OS X 10.7.2, and I was trying to install our app on the new iPad, which is running iOS 5.1. The problem is Xcode doesn't recognize the iPad as a deployable device. I know this is a common issue, but please read it all.
I get this in the organizer: (after push the "use for development")
The version of iOS on “iPad” does not match any of the versions of iOS supported for development with this installation of the iOS SDK. Please restore the device to a version of the OS listed below, or update to the latest version of the iOS SDK; which is available here.
OS Installed on iPad
5.1 (9B176)
Xcode Supported iOS Versions
Latest
5.0 (9A334)
4.3
4.2
Now I know that in order to connect the iOS 5.1 device to Xcode I need the latest release of Xcode, but I can connect another iPhone with iOS 5.1 to the same Xcode and deploy an app to it.
Why is that?
The only different between them is that this iPhone was previously connected to Xcode, and the iPad was not. I did manage to install an app to iPhone with iOS 5.1!
What is happening here? I don't want to install the new Xcode for nothing if I can install to 5.1.
Thanks.
Xcode will not let you build to an iOS version higher than it supports, and in this case with Xcode 4.2, you will not be able to deploy to iOS 5.1. I recommend updating to OS X Lion 10.7.3 and downloading the 4.3.2 version of Xcode. Do this any you will be able to deploy to your 5.1 device without any problems. In addition to this, the second device should not be able to receive builds from Xcode. Please check and see if the device in question is in fact running iOS 5.0.1 and not 5.1 as 5.1 will not work on Xcode 4.2 and 5.0.1 will.

Is moving to Lion a prerequisite for moving to XCode 4.1 (from the app store)?

should you only download XCode 4.1 from the app store if you move to Lion?
i.e I am staying on Leopard for a few more weeks, so do I have to stay with XCode 4.0.2 until I move to Lion?
Yes. Xcode 4.1 Requires Lion. This has been well documented, but 4.2 is apparently available for Snow Leopard as well.
Xcode 4.2 is available for both Lion and Snow Leopard, if you download it from the iOS Developer Centre while logged in as a registered developer. The Mac App Store will only upgrade you to Xcode 4.2 if you upgrade to Lion, but you can manually install it on Snow Leopard by manually downloading it as described here, and it runs just fine on Snow Leopard.
Yes moving to Lion is a requirement. 4.1 brings all of the Lion features into the Xcode environment. I would say if you aren't ready to move to Lion yet, then just stick with 4.0.2 unless you need to develop for Lion.
UPDATE: As of Xcode 4.2, it is now for both Lion and Snow Leopard.
Yes, it seems:
This is a pre-release version of Xcode 4.1 for both Mac and iOS development. This release requires Mac OS X Lion and includes iOS SDK 4.2. Continue to use Xcode 3.2.5 on a Snow Leopard partition if you plan to submit Mac or iOS apps to the App Store

UPDATE: This question was asked in Jul 2011. As of now, Nov 2011, Xcode 4.2 is already released and made available on the Mac App store.
